The value for money is excellent. We were very happy with the location, and the room itself was cheap and cheerful, which is fine with us. The check-in, however, was frustrating since there was no prior communication from the property regarding our room number or entry code, and no one answered the only number we had to contact them. Thankfully, I stumbled across Amin, a caretaker, who was able to help. FYI, reviews that mention breakfast are not current...the property no longer includes breakfast, only a shared fridge, coffee maker, coffee, tea, a water cooler, plates, and cuttlery.

Very disappainting, don't waste your money unless you are looking for something rather inexpensive but are okay with dumpy. My husband and I stayed for one night June 2024 and never again. I reached out several times once back home and did not hear back from the owner. Such disrespect for their guests! Very disappainting!!|My issues:|-not the room I thought I was getting|-no host to greet you and ensure a satisfactory stay or address concerns or answer questions about the local area|-room was dumpy and unkept|-dead bugs in overhead light |-ill-fitting mismatched, wrinkled bed linens, too small to cover 2 adults, only one wrinkled sheet and small wrinkled blanket, we were cold|-T.V. didn't work, small dumpy water closet, shower was okay|-dirty stairwell, meager breakfast offerings that were unappetizing, stale, over ripe fruit|-no one to talk to about my concerns|-furniture looked like yard sale discards, paint chips on tables, mismatched lamps, Very poorly appointed room|-5th floor room, so many, many steps|It is shocking to read other positive reviews. Not sure which rooms would get good reviews. Make sure you get the room and floor if staying! Do not expect any support from inn keeper.|The only positive thing is that the inn is near restaurants and a lovely neighborhood.

I would not stay there again. I had front bedroom over the street which was extremely noisy all times of the day. I was really cold the first night and there were no extra blankets or comforters in the room. Bed had one sheet and a very light quilt to cover me. There is no one on-site to help. Morning breakfast was meager. Cereal looked like it was 6 months old. I couldn't even make a pot of coffee after the people who had come down before me finished the pot they made. THERE were absolutely NO coffee filters. Search high and low and none to be found so I was forced to go without. Again no-one on-site to help.

A tiny room, tiny bathroom, but was quiet, clean and comfortable. Small Breakfast was awesome. Location excellent. The price was affordable. I liked. I will come back.

I stayed for one night and it was just what I needed. It's perfectly located downtown but not on a super busy street so it's nice and quiet. Check in was very quick and easy. My room was quiet and clean with a comfy bed and a decent view. I couldn't connect to the wi-fi when I was there but I never checked with the caretaker as I wasn't in my room long and didn't really need it. The bathroom had good water pressure and no issues with hot water. I never availed myself of the breakfast so can't speak to it.

Ideal location for exploring the attractions and shopping. Continental breakfast available, with easy walking distance to the Hungry Heart Cafe and Bagel Cafe, both of which serve excellent breakfasts. Very comfortable bed. I arrived in St John's on a 1:30 am flight from Toronto and check in was easy even in the middle of the night. Would definitely stay here again.

Complaint: messaged, phoned, online chat, and booking company could not reach the primary contact. Two email addresses, one phone number. 5 days before, 2 days before, day of. Once at property, our room provided a contact number for a service contact, and they replied quickly, promptly and were very helpful. Stayed in room 5. Bathroom installed as an afterthought. Less than 4x4 tiles in size. Great view of st. John's. Shower mat had bleach stains. Room Fridge didn't work. Approach property from the NE/SW street instead of the hilly SE/NW Street for maximum enjoyment

Did not enjoy my 4 night stay here and wish I had booked elsewhere. I reported on the second day that the bed was soft, lumpy with a black hole in the middle that sleepers fall into. On the 3rd day, caretaker fixed the box spring which did make the black hole not as bed but in reality, the mattress is just a bad purchase (apparently new this year). I don't know anyone who likes super soft mattresses never mind the black hole in the middle. This is totally unacceptable since sleep is the primary product being sold.||||Property says housekeeping included but not once did towels get refreshed or beds made/changed.||||TV Cable box was a problem (constant disconnecting) but was finally fixed on 3rd day.||||Experienced terrible street noise (drunken guys yelling, swearing at the top of their lungs) after 1 am which was disturbing. Fridge in the room had a slight hum non-stop. Soap provided is a joke. (teeny, tiny) ... bring your own. Carpet on the stairs needs replacing badly.||||Breakfast was OK although some stale hot cross buns/pastry was included in offerings. Otherwise, OJ sometimes, yoghurt, coffee/tea/hot choc., instant oatmeal, bread and muffins. 3 cereals available but they look suspicious at freshness. Not recommended at all!

Yelp
Our room was number 5 which is on the top floor (it was probably originally the attic). It's a long climb up there, especially with luggage. The bathroom is extra tiny but the shower - not in the bathroom - is extra large. The TV works but there were very few stations as they all said "subscription required". A list of functional stations would have been nice. I don't watch a lot of TV when traveling but winding down with some news would be nice. Continental breakfasts are usually pretty simple and this is no exception. The coffee was plentiful and good once you find the cups. There were muffins and toast with apples and oranges. There was also yogurt. The location is very handy. It's a quiet street but it's very close to everything. We walked to Signal Hill, to some great cafes and it's just a few blocks away from the pub and night life area. Tomorrow we plan to walk to a museum and some other attractions. Who needs a car when so much is so close? There are lots of USB connections and other plugins for recharging our phones. The room seemed clean and that was appreciated. The house is located on a very picturesque street. We really appreciated the automatic light that comes on once you enter past the storm door. It really helps with the push button lock. Small things like that make a real difference. Our host said he would slide a street parking permit under our door for our third day because we'll have a rental car on that day. That is a service that not every place would provide. That said there is room out back for two small vehicles. Would I stay here again? Yes, but probably not in room five.

Yelp
I had booked a stay here with Air Miles. My confirmation stated the I would receive an email with check-in details 24 hours prior to arrival. I did not receive any email and the phone number provided on the confirmation (same as the one on their website) was not in service. I emailed them a couple of times before departure (I was flying out in the evening and arriving in St. John's early in the morning), but I received no response until late the day after I got to St. John's. I complained to Air Miles (by email and voice mail, because they don't have humans answering phones) but they didn't respond until after I arrived in St. John's. I even went to the Gower Guest House location around noon (before check-in time) to confirm if they had my reservation and get details for getting into the property. Even after calling the number that they had next to a phone in the foyer and speaking to someone, I still wasn't sure that I had a place to stay - the individual I spoke with said that "if" I was booked, there would be an envelope with the check-in details in the foyer around 3:00 PM. Luckily Air Miles got back to me by phone, apologized and offered me alternative accommodations. I took them up on their offer of a guaranteed place to stay for that night (and the several other days that I was in St. John's). I also received an email from Expedia (apparently Air Miles books thru them) with a message saying "The property [Gower Guest House] has advised they can no longer honor the guest's booking because of Content Issue". I can't comment on the quality of the property because I didn't stay there, but I'll never consider them again if I have to travel to St. John's in the future.

Yelp
Booked a room here prior to pandemic and had to cancel due to travel restrictions. The hotel refused to give refund, only a credit voucher. However, the voucher expired end of 2021 with all restrictions including the 'Atlantic bubble' and our travel limitations we were not able to travel until May 2022 (5 months after the credit voucher expired). Contacted the hotel, they refused to issue a credit on another stay. We are now out $275. I understand that businesses had tough time during the pandemic but so did travellers that lost money.

Yelp
I had booked this bed and breakfast way back in November for a 4 day June stay following a cruise in Canadian waters. I took the non refundable booking, never expecting a worldwide pandemic to hit. Although NO tourists from outside the Atlantic provinces were allowed to stay in hotels, this establishment still billed me the full amount for 4 nights and refused to provide a refund based on the fact that they could not legally provide the service they were charging me for. VERY Dishonest. DO not book this establishment. They obviously are too inflexible to provide a good stay. Also found out the "breakfast" part of the B&B is continental style left in a common room. Not what I would expect from a true B&B
