Graduates Hotels Enters Short-Term Home Rental Market With Graduate Homes - AFAR

"A hotel-branded short-term rental program offering two premium homes near the University of Michigan as part of an effort to increase accommodation during peak university events. The Ann Arbor inventory includes a four-bedroom/two-bath house and a five-bedroom/six-bath house; all listings must meet the program’s premium criteria (minimum three bedrooms, full kitchens, living rooms, and laundry areas). Guests have access to hotel-like amenities—a dedicated concierge who can prestock the fridge and plan tailgating, complimentary bike rentals, shuttle service, pool and fitness-center access, and discounts at nearby hotel bars/restaurants—as well as optional in-home experiences through a partner app (for example, yoga or chocolate tastings). Pricing varies by property (roughly $500–$3,000, taxes excluded) with no extra cleaning or administrative fees. The program also manages guest communication, post-stay cleaning, and provides essentials such as glassware and towels, setting it apart from peer-to-peer rental marketplaces." - Bailey Berg

Graduate Hotels and Scholly Partner to Pay Student Loans - AFAR

"A collection of boutique hotels in university towns that highlights each location’s heritage through locally inspired design has pledged to raise $150,000 in partnership with scholarship app Scholly via a “$150K Payoff” campaign. From September 1 through December 31, 2019, participating properties in college towns (including Berkeley, Ann Arbor, Providence, Madison, Seattle and Minneapolis) will host community fundraisers — such as live jazz & blues brunches, rooftop Halloween parties, and Pure Barre classes followed by bagel-and-mimosa brunches — with tickets sold through Eventbrite and open to guests, locals and students; guests can also donate at checkout. Proceeds will be awarded as three $50,000 grants to be applied toward tuition or existing student loan debt; eligible applicants (individuals over 18 with outstanding federal or private loans, current undergraduates or graduates, and high school students registered to attend college) may apply at myscholly.com/graduatehotels through October 31 at 11:59 p.m. PST. At the time of the announcement there were 16 operating properties with several more planned to open soon." - Sarah Buder

This was our second stay at the Graduate Ann Arbor. We love the hotel location and the great, spacious lobby. Staff members were universally friendly and welcoming during both visits. ||The room decor is a little stuffy and dusty feeling, but I think that's due at least in part to the style adopted by the Graduate hotels. My main issue is with the bathrooms. First, they're very small with minimal counter space. The lighting is poor, with a single fixture above the mirror and black ceilings that make it even darker. The bathroom has saloon-style double swinging doors that are hard to maneuver, and privacy is impossible because there's a gap between the doors when they're closed.||We did have an issue with housekeeping during our second two-night stay. We came back to the room after it was serviced to find many things not done: coffee tray not replenished, dirty cups and trash not removed, decorative pillows and blankets left on the floor/chairs instead of put back on the beds. The housekeeping staff came back promptly and finished the job when we called about this, but it shouldn't have happened in the first place.||As one of the "best" hotels in a busy college town with high demand, the Graduate is able to charge rates way beyond the value of its facilities. It would be nice if they made an investment to freshen the rooms, especially the bathrooms.

As others mentioned, the rooms have paper-thin walls and doors. Someone was sneezing next door and it felt like they were in the room. Same with water running. We could also hear a tapping sound like a woodpecker was in the walls. Difficult to sleep. And the shower was like standing in ankle deep water when you showered. And the air vent needed cleaning. Yuck. The room is dark, which I suppose is a cool vibe, but just makes the room feel small. Wedding & birthday event the same night and the valet wasn’t prepared. The front desk was fantastic and gave great restaurant recommendations. Good location.

The pros: the bedding was comfortable and the location is great The cons: the sounds, smells, cleaning and cost for what you get. Our first impression getting to our room was that it smelled. It was musty but a general lack of deep cleaning smell. We opened our fridge to discover the previous guests leftovers still there which was very concerning for the thoroughness of the cleaning. There was also a concerning amount of water under the sink in the bathroom, which the hotel address as soon as we mentioned it. They also fixed our fire alarm when it started to beep the next day. The hotel lobby was cute, but the rest felt overall very rundown, especially when asking prices north of 300/night. There is clear water damage on our ceiling, a huge amount of dust in the vent in the bathroom and the tops of the body products were covered in buildup/mold. We also got a towel that had clearly not been washed well and had something stuck to it. The worst part was the lack of any sound proofing in the hotel. We could hear every door slam, dog bark, and conversation at any end of the hallway at any hour. On a Saturday when the hotel was the housing a wedding group it was nearly impossible to sleep more than 30 minutes between 10pm and 4am. And I’m not a light sleeper. It became comical. The amenities were also severely lacking for a 4-store hotel, including only instant coffee, lack of a robe, and just overall budget hotel vibes..

Disclaimer: we have no ties to UM and stayed here for 5 nights for a sporting competition unrelated to UM. Everyone we knew who had been to Ann Arbor told us to stay here. In retrospect, they all have ties to UM and the hotel is meaningful/nostalgic to them. ||Cute hotel decorated in subtle UM decor. Front desk and valet attendants are all very pleasant. Location is right off State Street. Easy walk to all things UM. ||Gym is small but is a nicely stocked hotel gym with 2 peloton bikes, 2 treadmills, free weights, kettle bells, weighted balls, etc. ||There is a restaurant in the lobby that we didn’t try. There is a coffee bar in the lobby that seemed overpriced. Starbucks is a couple of short blocks away and easy to walk to.||The room was spacious but the bathroom was comically small. 2 people can NOT be in the bathroom at the same time unless one is in the shower. ||Lots of chipped paint in our room: door frames, closet, bathroom doors were the worst. A facelift and paint job are very necessary. ||Biggest complaint is that the valet requires you to go in person to request the car. They don’t have a phone number and there isn’t an automated system. Sometimes, it took a few minutes to receive the car and other times, it took 10-15 min.

This was an interesting looking hotel. I I liked how the lobby looked. However, the rooms left a lot to be desired. My room honestly wasn’t very clean. The bed headboard was dusty. It had about a fourth of an inch of dust on it, and the flooring was dirty. The bathroom was small and not clean. I felt like the ceiling was low in the bathroom as well. I luckily had to leave early from a business meeting so I didn’t have to really stay overnight. Our company started to choose other hotels, and I’m glad that they did because I was not a fan of this one. I do think that they had good food in the bar. The wings were amazing. I also liked the beverage menu they had there. The drinks were really tasty.

Pros:|- Closeness to Campus|- Kitschy Michigan/College-Themed Decors|- Social Lobby Area|-Eric at the Front Desk||Cons:|- Needed Attention to Detail on Dusting/Cleaning||This would have been 4/5 if it had not been for Eric at the hotel front desk. He is super personable and a joy! Eric turned my experience from great to excellent.||I stayed two nights (Friday through Sunday) while attending an alumni event. My room was on the top (14th) floor in the southeast corner of the hotel. The room had great views of the bell tower and campus. The bed and pillows were comfy enough, and I appreciated the two water bottles in the fridge.||The hotel was a short and convenient walk to Central Campus and downtown. I didn’t end up using my food and beverage credits at the hotel because of how walkable it was to great food and drinks in the area.||Only nitpick would be with a few very small issues I noticed about the cleanliness. The vent in the bathroom in my room was coated in dust and there were hairs stuck to the wool blanket that is put at the foot of the bed. The grout in between tiles in the bathroom also could use a good deep clean. But again, nothing major and an overall good experience.

The Graduate has a charming and creative concept that I enjoyed. It fully leans into the college town theme in a fun and thoughtful way. From the moment you check in, it feels like you’re stepping into a stylish grad school fantasy. Room key cards look like old-school student IDs, and the lobby is filled with chalkboards covered in equations, vintage study lounges, and cozy plaid furniture that captures the academic vibe perfectly. The room itself was clean, comfortable, and tastefully decorated with collegiate charm. Great bed, solid furnishings, and lots of character. However, the bathroom was a bit of a letdown—on the smaller side, rather dimly lit, and it felt older compared to the rest of the room. The lobby café and bar area is a great space to hang out or work, with big windows, comfy seating, and a creative menu. The location is also very convenient, you can walk to all the great restaurants nearby. Overall, The Graduate is a great place to stay.

Google
Meh, compared to other graduate properties this one is in need of a big overhaul, rooms flooring is falling apart, stained fitted sheet, not very clean, the food and restaurant were very sub par with a smell I suspect coming from the carpet, and a menu full of items "not available". Additionally the water in the property has a smell, and doesn't seem drinkable being that they do not provide any drinking glasses (maybe it isn't?). Overall your better off staying somewhere else and saving some money because this hotel isn't nicer than a Hampton inn or holiday inn.

Yelp
The rooms are so small and the valet takes forever, I texted them 15 minutes ago then when I came down they said it would be 10 more minutes because they parked 10 minutes away. And we were in a very big rush. They also went nice about if. I would give it a zero but I can't so I'm giving it a 1

Yelp
This is the 4th time I have stayed at a Graduate and it will be the last. Dumpy, way over priced hotels. Supposed to be kitchy and cool, but frankly they are just dated motel 6's near a college. Don't fall for it.

Yelp
I used to stay here regularly when it was an independent hotel. within the last month was taken over as a Hilton property unfortunately, they have some work to do to bring it up to their usual standards especially in the victors bar and restaurant. My wife and I had come off of a 10 Hour Dr. from the upper peninsula and we're looking forward to a bit of, relaxing the hotel. The bar was entirely out of all its draft beer. The tables in the bar area were completely sticky and scuffed. We moved to the dining room for our dinner. The weight staff seen unprepared for dinner service bringing out our appetizers without any Plates while we waited for while our appetizers cooled. My wife tried the saltshaker of the table, and then one after the next the salt was all hard in the shakers. Finally had to ask them to bring salt from the kitchen. Bathroom shower stall slippery and could use a good cleaning. Even the pencil in the room doesn't write (try a quality Ticonderoga no 2). On the positive side, the rooms are nicely appointed, and they've maintained some of their character with the original decor. Also the location is well placed.
