Google asks about “Rooms”, “Service” and “Location”: I’m happy to give The Graduate Dallas “5 Stars” in each category, and to give my fellow Google Reviews users the reasoning behind my wholehearted endorsement.
We stayed in a King Suite, which was beautifully decorated in an SMU motif (the lovely campus is, after all, directly across Hillcrest Avenue). The suite was recently remodeled, and featured a great living room (large desk, plush sofa, sitting chair and new large screen Smart TV with excellent internet speed). The kitchen offered a full-size refrigerator/freezer (with the freezer on top). This unit is the largest I’ve seen in a hotel suite. The large kitchen sink had excellent water pressure. The microwave was new,, and there are enough cabinets to store supplies for a visiting football team.
The bathroom offered a vanity and mirror that is separated from the toilet by a solid privacy door. The modern glass shower always provided great pressure and hot water.
The bedroom had an exceptionally comfortable King, with lovely wallpaper and decor all around. A very large dresser covered the interior wall between the bedroom and the bathroom. A very large closet and three adjacent draws faced the bed on the other interior wall. The bedroom dresser wall also featured the same large screen Smart TV offered in the living room.
Housekeeping staff was wonderful. They could not do enough for us.
The same top notch service was found throughout the hotel. The Front Desk Manager, Gilberto, was simply a great and trusted resource for our two week stay. We also appreciated Ray’s help at the front desk. Valet parking was our first hint of what was to come, when we arrived: A very warm, Texas-sized greeting that strongly contrasted with recent experiences in the DFW area. Some may opine that valet prices seem high. They are, however, fully in line with other area hotels, and, based upon my experience, offer far better staffing. The hotel’s third strong point, its EXCELLENT location, is a major contributor to that parking discussion. The Graduate sits on a small lot, facing Hillcrest Avenue. Behind the hotel sits one of the loveliest, and most expensive (per SF) neighborhoods in the USA. They are simply not getting a garage in there!
The hotel sits across from the western edge of the SMU campus. One can walk north on the avenue to an amazing selection of shops and restaurants. Once the Dallas heat kicks in, you can drive up Hillcrest to Snider Plaza, a lovely, recently restored, shopping and dining area that has everything from breakfast to late supper, CVS, major supermarket (Tom Thumb), more banks than you’ll ever need, and some very interesting independent retailers. Just avoid the Shell on Lovers Lane, at the north end of Snider Plaza (unless you “love” paying far too much for your gas).
Although marketed as “Dallas”, the hotel is located in the City of University Park (known locally as “UP”).
UP and its much smaller neighbor, the Town of Highland Park(“HP”), offer exceptional public safety services (visible, proactive police patrols and incredibly quick police and Fire Rescue response) to residents, visitors, and SMU students.
The hotel takes the high road, and does not disparage the neighboring City of Dallas in its marketing. Your less-than-humble reporter will simply say: 1) I’ve been around crime (from rolling on the ground with
felons to sitting in meetings with municipal and state leaders).
2) You want to stay in UP, and eat often in UP (there are no hotels in HP).
3) A notable and safe exception is to head south on Hillcrest to Al Biernat’s Oak Lawn. It’s less than a ten minute drive. Impeccable service and steak.
4) Don’t be fooled by locations that utilize the term “Park Cities”. You will
likely be in the City of Dallas, where the incredibly dedicated police officers may not be available when you need them (as a result of longstanding staffing shortages, that are finally being addressed).
The location, service, and lovely room make this property stand out, just like the UP community where it is situated.
