If your company, or the university, is going to put you up in an average to below average hotel already, then at least be close to the university. That's the one thing this hotel has is great location. It's 304 rooms in the heart of the University of Minnesota campus and close to athletic facilities. Close to TCF Bank Stadium, 3M Arena at Mariucci, and The Barn or Williams Arena. It's also close to the Metro Light Rail line which is literally across the street from the hotel.
Upon entering the hotel, it seems as if something is wrong. The entire lobby is overwhelmed with students, bums, and other guests as the lobby acts as an overflow room for the Starbucks located on the first floor. While it's nice having a Starbucks, the unnecessarily busy atmosphere it creates is suboptimal for hotel guests.
There's no central visual point of reference for the guest to find the check in desk. No sign. Nothing. I literally had to look at a map to find where check-in is located as the valet stand was abandoned.
At the front desk the agent was pleasant, welcoming and very friendly. Yet, she asked that killer question of "how were my travels in?"...guess she wasn't expecting to hear how miserable it was. How a series of mechanical failures led me to arrive at the hotel so late. It's one of those questions where A) they really don't care, B) it was out of their control C) there's little to no guest recovery. They couldn't even move me to a room with a king bed, so asking that question really does no good.
The guest room theming is cool for about two minutes, then you realize you're still in a 1985-built hotel with crappy air conditioning, dirty vents and plumbing that needs major improvement.
Things they can easily fix, like WiFi speed are ridiculously slow. Which makes you wonder how much of the drag is from the lobby being overwhelmed with Starbucks customers crashing on hotel furniture and bandwidth.
I found the shower head height to be annoyingly low. Like how in the world does a basketball team shower in this hotel?
Much love and appreciation goes to whomever chose Malin + Goetz products for their toiletries. Such a wonderful sense for apothecary is appreciated by the guest. That's all ruined when shampoo, conditioner and body wash are dispersed from a pump action dispenser mounted to the shower tile. The hotel claims they're locked, but it's fairly easy to bust the lock, or just unscrew the bottle. Shame of it is, I can't use the best products available to the guest because I can't get out of my mind that another guest could tamper with the bottles. So I bring my own low-rated, boring and Walmart cheap product instead.
I was very pleased that by hiding my decorative pillows and decorative blanket in the room's closet and by making my own bed that housekeeping didn't bother with putting those dirty pillows and linens back on the bed. I was also pleased that I was completely restocked with toiletries by housekeeping and I feel I got my money's worth by offering them a small tip.
Quite displeasing was the dirty bathroom vent, and the dirty vents on the wall mounted HVAC. Look, I get it if a hotel has central air and doesn't do duct cleaning that often, but wall mounted units that just went through a refurb should be replaced. Also disappointing was the filthy windows, and the wall paper that was peeling. I mean come on this place just went through a rebranding. The wall paper couldn't have been up for more than four months, really sloppy job.
At checkout the front desk asked me about my stay. Which turned out to be fairly disingenuous as I listed my problems and it was met with an "oh, well would you like to settle your incidentals to the same card on file?" Which brings up another gripe. Look, I get that they're on a college campus, but to charge $20, for surface lot self parking is pretty much robbing the guest without using a gun.
