Yelp
I chose this hotel specifically for the rooftop bar since Quirk, the hotel down the street, had no availability. Arrived at the hotel and were informed the rooftop bar was closed. When we asked for the rationale, we were not given one. No construction, not outside of normal hours, just not open. While we were disappointed, we were willing to overlook it since the hotel apparently had other amenities. Well, come to find out, the game room on the second floor was under construction, so we weren't able to use those facilities, the cafe downstairs was closed for the night, so couldn't buy water or snacks, and the fountain in the fitness room was broken, so we couldn't refill our reusable bottles and had to pop next door to the market to buy plastic water bottles. Why do we pay extra to stay at places like this? For all the extras a Courtyard Marriott don't usually provide. So when you don't provide those extras, I expect not to pay a premium for my stay.
On top of this, the AC in our room wouldn't get below 73 and blew constantly. I had to attend some work meetings over Zoom and the obnoxious AC had to be turned all the way down because of the background noise. Additionally, the first shower I took, the water would not get hot! I turned it all the way to the left and it was still frigid. Plus, to say the water "pressure" was lacking is an understatement. It's like showering under a sink faucet. I finished my cold shower and called the front desk to have someone come look at our shower. The woman that answered said "I'll call maintenance" and then hung up. No "goodbye" or estimate for when they'd arrive. Luckily the maintenance crew showed up super quick and managed to get the hot water flowing, but nothing could be done about the pressure. They also told us the AC would get better as the sun went down - not the case. After they left, we noticed they had tracked black stuff all over the bathroom floor and we had to mop this up ourselves. They really should wear shoe covers so they don't make an epic mess.
I also wanted to mention how ridiculous it is to pay $18 parking in a nearly 100% empty and filthy parking garage that gave me no confidence our car wouldn't be vandalized. How hard is it to pick up trash in your garage and make it at least somewhat presentable?
At least the bed was comfortable and the room was clean, so I was mostly willing to overlook a lot of these flaws, but the straw that broke the camel's back came in the morning when we called for a late check out. I'm working remotely this trip and was hoping for a 1 or 2 pm check out to accommodate my meetings - something I've easily secured at large chain hotels. You'd think after all of these issues we'd run into that they'd be willing to bend just a little, but no. A noon check out was all they could offer. I'll now be forced to work in a populated and noisy area because all of the other spaces I'd usually use when researching hotels like this are closed to the public without being notified on their website. I was told I could sit outside on the 2nd floor for more privacy, but it's going to be 100 degrees here today. Are you serious??
We used to live in Charlottesville, but business after business here has closed and moved away, leaving depressingly broken down and empty buildings in their wake. This is all to say that we had hoped to help this crumbling town by staying in a smaller chain near downtown, but we won't be back. I hope this is the last time I ever have to come to this town, but if I do, I won't be staying at this hotel and can't in good conscience recommend it to anyone.
