The 42 Best Restaurants in Rome

"This is old school, genteel Italy at its finest. There’s a lot of dark, heavy wood, contrasted by floral wallpaper and big brass mirrors, making the already expansive space seem even bigger. Behind the bar, bow-tied baristas pour traditional Neapolitan coffee two ways: cappuccino and espresso. They’ll stretch to a macchiato if you ask nicely. Stop by any time before 10 in the morning and you’ll find waiters in white waistcoats ferry plates piled high with glistening pastries, fresh from the oven, to bourgeois Romans. Some are seated outside, ensconced with a newspaper and piazza views over Hadrian’s Temple. Everything is made in the kitchen, from delicate Neapolitan flaky pastries filled with lemon zest and ricotta, to plump doughnuts oozing with golden custard. The croissants come plain, or filled with pistachio cream or Nutella. There are also handmade chocolates, including orange peel dipped in chocolate and an impressive selection of boozy truffles. Come lunchtime, there’s a decent selection of light counter meals, available to eat in or takeaway. The menu changes daily; we recommend the vitello tonnato and zucchini parmigiana with a side of couscous salad." - Maresa Manara

The service here is honestly so impressive. We came for breakfast three times. On the second day, we ordered the pizza bread toast with salami, no cheese, and just half a glass of blood orange juice—it was super hearty. The next day, the staff actually remembered our order from the day before. Such amazing attention to detail

We enjoyed a cup of coffee and tiramisu. Our daughter loved the fruit infusion tea. We will come back for lunch, because we loved the quiet setting (in the back room) amidst busy tourist area.

I don’t usually leave reviews, but this experience was too awful to ignore. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel like an inconvenience rather than a guest. They were curt, borderline aggressive, and seemed completely uninterested in basic hospitality. Any questions we asked were met with eye-rolls or blunt, dismissive replies. As for the food—if you can even call it that—it was abysmal. The eggs were rubbery, overcooked beyond belief, and tasted like they’d been sitting under a heat lamp for hours. Truly the worst eggs I’ve ever had. The rest of the meal didn’t fare any better: bland, poorly presented, and wildly overpriced for what we received. I left feeling ripped off, unwelcome, and still hungry. There are too many great cafes out there to waste time or money here. Avoid this place at all costs

I visited Gran Caffè La Caffettiera in Rome as a tourist and ordered drinks and water (receipt attached). When I was leaving, I politely asked for a glass of water from the thermos, and the staff yelled at me saying “NO NO!” in a very rude and disrespectful tone. I understand if there are rules, but there is no need to treat customers that way, especially after paying and being respectful. This kind of behavior ruined my experience. I do not recommend this place due to the lack of hospitality and customer service. I visited on July 12th, 2025 at around 2:20 PM. Not not Yosf was other guy behind the table

Pastries were terrible, tasted like they were from one or even two days ago. Service was mid. Most importantly, we got in line to pay and a waiter screamed at us telling us to stay (as if we were about to leave without paying). Very disrespectful considering we were clearly in line, arms crossed, waiting to pay. As someone who is on vacation, you should never go to a place with bad food, mid service, and incredibly disrespectful staff. Who wants to go somewhere with stale pastries and where you might get treated like a thief? Worst place I've been to in Rome by far. Paid €47 for a terrible breakfast for 4 and got treated like a criminal. Do NOT come here.

The atmosphere of the cafe enchants you however we were unfortunate to have experienced some prejudice. We had come in original to order pastries to go since we had a train to catch, but were offered a table. The host at the front said all the tables inside were full and that we would have to sit outside. Which we were fine with even tho it was raining lightly and there was no canopy. After sitting for a few minutes, we noticed another group of tourist sitting across from us, and an Italian couple who was just sat behind us. The rain started to pick up and the Italian couple asked to be seated inside the “fully packed” cafe. The host did not hesitate to take them inside. We noticed a ton of locals being seated inside after just being told we could not. I assume the same happened to the other tourists sitting outside, since it was just us out there. I have no complaints about the pastry’s nor the coffee, it was great and average priced for Romes city center. It was very unfortunate we had to experience this. I understand Italy has had a huge influx of tourism and tourist can be annoying, however I don’t believe that is a reason to treat someone disrespectfully. We travel a lot and always respect the locals and culture. Id say if you are a tourist, give this business a try but don’t be surprised if you experience something similar.

Yelp
Our go to breakfast spot next door to our Air B&B. The cafe macchiato was our go to morning beverage. The Cornettos are large.

Yelp
Worst Restaurant in Italy Two staff members encouraged us to enter the restaurant; almost pulling us in. Borderline obnoxious. My buddy wanted dessert, I wanted to walk further. I had bad apple strudel. It may have started off flaky but over the day it compressed. Not many apples. Those present were drying out. Espresso was about 2/3rds of a shot. There should be "one way do not enter" signs on both doors.

Yelp
We ate breakfast here this morning. Overall the food was ok. I had a zucchini omelette. I am from the United States so what I got was unexpected. It was more of a pie piece which I would have thought was a Quiche. It tasted ok though. The omelette with tomato plate looked more like an omelette but was also just ok. The pastry is delicious. We had the fruit tart. I think the ambiance is beautiful and what you would expect out of an Italian cafe. The cappuccino is outstanding. I would come here for the pastry and cappuccino to be honest. Seems to be what most people do. The overall best part about the experience was the server. Valentina was here name. She smiled at my kids and asked them their names. Very personal touch. She also tried to provide very good service.

Yelp
After a long day of walking the streets of Rome we stopped in at this cafe for coffee. It's located in Pietra Plaza. We were lucky to get an outdoor table on this mildly sunny day. I ordered an Americana and a cherry tart which I spied in the display case inside. The coffee was smooth yet bold - I don't think I ever had bad coffee in Italy. The cherry tart was delicious. Delivered without utensils, I assumed it was proper etiquette to pick it up and eat it with my fingers. It was slightly sweet with a clear, shiny fruit glaze covering the top which was flavorless but kept the cherry filling from flowing out of the crust once I took bites. The tart crust was perfect and not at all crumbly. Service was pleasant and English was spoken which is always appreciated when you are a guest in the country. A very nice place to sit and relax at a patio table while doing some people watching.

Yelp
Very nice breakfast place. Good service and delicious pastries. Omelette is only with cheese and any vegetable you ask is put on the side. Strange twist if you are from the US. But overall awesome place and ambiance. Coffee is amazing. Will wake you up!

Yelp
The location in Piazza di Pietra in the heart of Rome (with a view of the historic Temple of Hadrian) is grand, but Gran Caffè, despite its name, is not great. Gran Caffè is ok which is totally a-ok ... and 3-stars. We stopped in for a quick latte and afternoon snack, but left after just trying the weak coffee. Service was limited and void of energy. There was simply too many better and more intriguing coffee shops in Rome for us to waste too much time here. One reason for the awkward experience might of been that we came in the afternoon and the place seemed confused if it was a patio bar, tea room, cafeteria (like the title suggests), coffee shop, or cocktail bar. The dithering offered an opportunity for departure, so, we paid and took our leave. Gran Caffè la Caffettiera is a-ok though it isnt a grand cafe.

Yelp

Yelp
Amazing wine & apps to go with (apparently gratis). Wifi is non-existent, even though it says that it's there. It's not. Service consistent & actually timely. Waiters are patient & friendly. Can't go wrong.

Yelp
We just popped in for a cappuccino at the stand-up bar. What lovely interior décor. The whole place, including the bathrooms, have a French bistro feel. The cash is in front of wooden display shelves with all manners and flavours of mints and candies. I bought Pastiglie Leone in the spritz flavour - they really do taste like an Aperol spritz! Efficient service both at the bar and at the cash. Now I just need someone to explain why the cameriere responded to me in French...

Yelp
34€ for two sandwiches, two beers and a baileys coffee with cream and Kahlua. It's the the one that looks likes it's in a martini glass, mall but delicious! We had a ham and cheese and a salami and cheeses sandwich. The salami is way better, has a lot more flavor than the ham sandwich. Food was ready fast and waiters are attentive, but somehow disappear when you want the check. Everyone spoke English. It's good for a quick snack. They also sell pastries. Q

Yelp
We were part of the influx of customers who barged in when it started raining. What perfect shelter is a warm cafe with nice seats and comfy sofas? The waiter was very good at handling all the tables that demanded seats, menus and drinks. I liked how they used an electronic tablet to take orders so our orders came pretty quickly, based on how many customers just came in. We were lucky to try the last tiramisu and it's a must try, especially if you are new to Italy/Rome :)

Yelp
Food and service are good. Nice to have a/c. But be careful when ordering off the menu...they told us we could have any type of ice cream and then charged 40% more than the gelato options on the menu.
