The 27 Best Things to Do in Mexico City

"Even if you're not staying at this hotel on the Zócalo, it's worth stopping just to see the jaw-dropping interior. The building originally opened as a department store in 1899. Since then, its art nouveau bones have been carefully maintained: The curving staircase is a replica of the one at Paris's Le Bon Marché, and the antique elevator, made of iron and concrete, was the first of its kind in Mexico City. But the pièce de résistance is the incredible Tiffany stained-glass ceiling, imported from France in 1908." - Scarlett Lindeman

3 Days in Mexico City

"Slip into the 19th-century Gran Hotel Ciudad de México. Don’t worry that you’re not a guest; you may see a few other in-the-know tourists gazing up at the Art Nouveau decor, notably the Tiffany stained-glass ceiling."

Where to Stay in Mexico City During Your Visit (Updated 2025)

"In a stately Art Nouveau setting, I found Gran Hotel Ciudad de México impressive for its ornate lobby with wrought-iron elevators and balustrades, huge rooms overlooking the Zócalo, marble bathrooms, large TVs, desks, and reliable air conditioning." - Matthew Kepnes

The 5 Best Hotels in Mexico City (Updated 2025)

"Built as a department store in 1899 and converted into a hotel for the 1968 Olympics, this historic Art Nouveau property—featured in several James Bond films—has an impressive interior lobby with a Tiffany stained-glass ceiling and wrought-iron elevators and balustrades; it sits right on the Zócalo and has two restaurants serving Mexican cuisine plus a fitness center. I especially like that you can take in views over the Zócalo while enjoying the expansive breakfast buffet, though rooms facing the square can be noisy (you can request an interior room for a quieter stay). The huge rooms include classic wooden furniture and suites even have four-poster beds with curtains; whether a room or suite, you’ll have a large TV, big work desk, seating area, safe, coffee maker, and minibar, and the marble bathrooms are spacious with bathrobes, slippers, and complimentary toiletries—some even have both bathtubs and walk-in showers. Overall, it’s the best choice for history lovers focused on the sites around the Zócalo." - Matthew Kepnes

The Gran Hotel Mexico is elegant. It is superb in every way. One has the impression of having gone back to the early 1900s considering its luscious décor. The staff is gracious and supremely attentive. The Terraza restaurant is magnificent. We really recommend getting the breakfast buffet package. The rooms are quiet and the beds are very comfortable.

Gran Hotel Ciudad De Mexico lives up to its reputation. We were greeted immediately when we arrived by the bellman, Yael. He carried our luggage, the check-in was smooth and water was offered. Yael proceeded to show us up the old antique elevator and to our room. In the room, he showed us around and was very attentive. The whole staff was courteous and the customer service was great. If you're looking for historic, old vibes, this is is for you! Best part, it is indeed very close to the central square so you get to see it all! We visited in September and the decor for the festivities as Mexico's Independence is in September were spectacular!

This is our favorite place to stay in one of my favorite cities. The rooms are beautiful and clean and the staff are knowledgeable, very friendly and warm. Unfortunately I got very sick when I was there a month ago by no fault of the hotel. They were so kind and helped us get a doctor to the room. The lobby is stunning! The food at the restaurant is very good. And the location is unbeatable. This was our second stay and we plan to go back.

Really nice old style hotel. Convenient, right on the central square. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Beautiful lobby that is hard to describe, Old world charm. Our room is spacious, clean and has a king size bed. Excellent place to stay!

The hotel is as beautiful as seen in pictures, the staff are top notch, very helpful, engaging, and always pleasant. The front desk staff, Fernando being one of many, were ALL very generous and accommodated us when we arrived early and when our flight departure left after check out by allowing us to check in our luggage, gave us a key to access the bathroom’s and a waiting area that had beverages and some snacks. All the belll boys, especially Emmanuel and Isaias treat you with upmost respect and hospitable. |||It was thanks to the hotel staff and the transportation service that they partner with which allowed us to get to one of our excursions. Because of an event that was going on in the Zócalo, there were no Ubers available to transport us. Uber confirmed a ride one hour from the time we had requested it

Google
The hotel is a well-preserved historical masterpiece, built in the late 19th century. The staff in the lobby and the restaurant are super friendly, helpful and accommodating. The interior of the hotel is breathtaking. The rooms are quite large but the furnishings, fixtures and amenities are in need of updating. The location of the hotel is ideal to experience the historical section of Mexico City. Nearby shopping and restaurants are plentiful. The view from the rooftop restaurant is amazing. All prices were reasonable.

Google
My daughter and I greatly enjoyed our stay at Gran Hotel. The building is magnificent and full of history. The rooms are clean, spacious, and quite nice. The location is perfect, particularly if you are visiting Mexico City for the first time. But the service stands out as truly spectacular. The bellman - Emmanuel, Abraham, and others - make us feel safe and truly cared for. We will return!

Emmanuel, Stephanie , Cynthia and Jose Luis and isais were all very helpful and solicitous. We enjoyed our stay very much. Huge room with slippers and robes. Fabulous breakfast on the Terraza overlooking the Zocalo! Indigenous market and many historical sights nearby and very quiet at night. Wonderful final night in CDMX!

Yelp
An absolutely magical hotel. The staff is so kind and does turn down service with little treats on your pillow. The breakfast in their restaurant is lovely and every night we ate in the rooftop restaurant overlooking the square. It was fantastic and we had the best cappuccino of our lives in that rooftop restaurant.

Yelp
The terrace has a great view of the zocalo. The lunch menu was delicious and budget friendly. The lobby was beautiful with a ceiling of glass and really detailed designs

Yelp
The hotel is amazing! I think I mentioned it in the Terrace review, but the hotel was used to film 2 bond movies. The hotel is amazing. The rooms are so well kept and clean. I have never had any issues staying here. The service is superb and I have never been treated poorly. This hotel has the best staff in Mexico. They take pride in their work and pride in maintaining the hotel standing and looking as beautiful as possible. I feel like its the best kept museum in the Zocalo area. It is so well kept and you never see any kind of rubbish or trash. Honestly, it's not as expensive as most people think. The views from the room are as amazing as the ones in the terrace restaurant. I sometimes never want to leave. The views are completely worth it. There is a bustling area next to the hotel. You can find food and drinks at any hour and you always feel safe.

Yelp
I'm focusing only on the restaurant experience. It was the least enjoyable meal I've had in Mexico City. Despite an impressive menu description and presentation, the reality fell short. I opted for the octopus skewer, but it arrived with a lukewarm bottom and an ice-cold top. After sending it back, the reheating left it in an inedible state.

Yelp
One of the best, if not, the best hotel in the city. I arrived at 1am. The gate was closed for security purposes. They has a doorbell to ring to come in. As soon as I was greeted, they took my luggage and walked me to the registration desk. While they looked up my reservation and entered my info, we were given complimentary champagne. Loved it from the start. The service was immaculate. The staff very friendly and kept the place very clean. The hotel is the closest hotel to the center. If you pick a view of the zocalo, it will be very memorable and incredible. You're literal accesos the building where the Mexican President resides. The rooms were great and very clean. Housekeeping was super friendly. The restaurant offer a buffet from 7-11am and overlooks el Zocalo. The food was great and I couldn't have enough of the cafe de olla. On Sunday, they have a brunch style buffet with mimosas. I didn't try the sit down restaurant. Not enough time. The building was built by the military during Porfirio Diaz' dictatorship, then later turned into a hotel. They don't have a spa, but have a spa they partner with that goes to your room. You can't go wrong. The idiot that did a 1 star was done out of spite and not experience.

Yelp
If you want to walk around the historic downtown, it's a great location. However, the noise level is high, and the area is constantly crowded. Because of the noise and crowd, I found it a bit exhausting to stay for six nights. I wish I stayed in the Roma area for a few nights instead. The housekeeping staff can use more training. It is sufficient to say there was a lack of attention to detail. One day, I returned to the hotel around 3 pm afternoon, looking forward to a shower and rest before going out to dinner. The room wasn't serviced, so I notified the front desk. Then, I had to sit in the lobby, waiting for my room to be serviced. The staff are generally friendly. One of their bellhops, Diego, was super friendly and accommodating.

Sam D.

Yelp
I will not be recommending this hotel to others and will not be coming back. It is a beautiful hotel and great location though. Unfortunately, we are staying here currently on vacation and on the night of 12/8/23 they hosted an event that that played very loud instrumental music and singing until 3:00 am! This was very loud and we could not sleep. We were up for hours. This just shows us how inconsiderate and disrespectful this hotel is towards their guests! We are on the fourth floor, and wehen we complained, nothing was done. We did not pay decent money for a decent hotel just to be ignored and unable to sleep.

Yelp
Pluses: * Absolutely the best staffing of our entire trip to Mexico. - Particularly the front desk employee who made certain that we were able to get tickets to the Frida Kahlo/ Casa Azul Museum, when our US credit cards didn't work.  - Loved the doorman, had lots of great conversations.  - The room service was wonderful! * The restaurant upstairs was a bit of a splurge compared to others in Mexico we visited, but we were very impressed with the quality. Our stay in the hotel included a discount on the breakfast buffet, which we used on one of the mornings.  * The tour of Teotihuacan/ "Los Pyramides" arranged by the hotel was a great experience for my husband on his birthday. Also: quite a workout with lots of steps to climb! * The public spaces decor was impressive, of course, with the Art Nouveau stained glass, iron cage elevator and crystal chandeliers. (A friend we visited in Mexico City used to get dressed up as a child to visit the site when it was a fancy department star.) * The room was decorated in a classic way, tall ceilings and moldings, but with modern technology like push button curtain controls. We liked the old school telephone by the toilet. * Incredibly central location near the Zocalo/ main plaza, lots of archeological sites, restaurants, museums and people watching.  Other: * Just be aware that taxis cannot stop directly at the front door of the hotel, you will be walking about 50 feet till you meet the doorman, who will assist you with your luggage up the stairs.

Yelp
Went to the Sunday brunch buffet here. The Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico is a beautiful building. After requesting a seating for brunch, someone came to greet us and took us upstairs, telling us about some of the history of the building. The buffet includes mimosa and coffee, and all you can eat, along with a great view of the city. The staff was super helpful and friendly -- when we asked one of the staff to take a group photo, he also prompted each couple to take a funny tourist picture so it looked like we were holding on to the flag pole that was in the plaza. Definitely worth the treat.

Yelp
I stayed here for four nights during Day of the Dead weekend. The hotel is beautiful. There are apples and bottled water for everyone by the elevator. The lobby has a fantastic coffee brew and a variety of teas. They also have Mexican candy. The restaurant has a terrace that overlooks the Zócalo. My room had a Nespresso machine. There are robes and a mini bar in the room. I was welcome with a glass of champagne and there was a pastry in my room when I arrived. I took a star off because the safety deposit box is complicated. I wanted to use the regular shower and not the hand-held one and for the life of me, I couldn't get the shower to switch to the non hand-held one. Also, On Oct. 31, during the Day of the Dead parade, the only option in the restaurant was a $25 brunch buffet. There was nothing else you could order. Nevertheless, the hotel is beautiful and I'd definitely stay there again.

Yelp
What an amazing place, this place is stunning, awesome architecture, awesome history, awesome location, awesome service , super clean, super safe, a site to be seen . The history of this hotel is super interesting, the place itself is stunningly beautiful a look into yesteryears , I'm glad I got to stay here and I'm glad I ate dinner at the restaurant up above which was superb and the views at night I would honestly pay for . Do yourself a favor and come here and check this place out, stay here if you can, the rates are extremely reasonable especially compared to United States hotels . Great place!

Yelp
Beautiful, central, and priced incredibly well. If you're looking to stay in this part of town or just need a place to crash for the night between flights, highly recommended! The rooftop bar and restaurant is beautiful - closes at 11. Just make sure to be safe in the neighborhood if you're walking around late at night. An old building beautifully restored.

Yelp
The staff, the location, the food, .... heaven. Just heaven in the center of the city. Loved every minute there! All of the wonderful employees made our stay so fantastic, so attentive, so knowledgeable and were always willing to go to great lengths to make your stay satisfying. I would love to visit again.

Yelp
First time in Mexico City so our experience here so far is great. They greeted us with champagne and recommended a ton of places to check out...and some to not check out. The hotel is stunning just to look at you will not stop taking photos of everything even the apples and water stations they have throughout. And don't get me started on the terrace restaurant great view of el zocalo, great food and awesome service. I would definitely come again.

KT H.

Yelp
Lobby and elevator are beautiful. Scenes from one of the James Bond movies was filmed there. Had drinks and lunch at hotel restaurant and it has a fantastic view of the central square.

Yelp
Wonderfully helpful and polite front desk. Beautiful, huge hotel with great ceiling stained glass. Dark during the day so watch your step as I tripped several times on lights on the ground! Large rooms with a beautiful terrace view on one side. Secure entry by doorbell. They have a bar/restaurant and breakfast is included but I'd advise against going unless you are a native as the service will suffer greatly if you're a foreigner.
google avatar

Alysha M.

Yelp
Had a great stay here, especially enjoying the absolutely stunning ceiling. We also learned that the beautiful elevators were the first elevators in Mexico! Staff was super friendly and helpful, even organized a city tour for guests.

Yelp
Our first day's stay in Mexico City before continuing on to Cuernavaca was at the Gran Hotel. We read about the historical aspects of this building and wanted to stay here. It's a former 19th century department store with an art nouveau décor, beautiful stained-glass ceiling and a huge Louis XV-style chandelier in the foyer. On each end of the hotel atrium/lobby, there's a wrought iron vintage elevator that a staff member will operate and accompany you up to your floor. There is a modern elevator for regular use. So elegant. Upon check-in, you are welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine. Our second floor interior room had a view of little courtyard. The room was large with high ceilings. There's a flat-screen LCD TVs, modern spacious granite and marble bathrooms and comfy beds, air conditioning and Wi-Fi access. A nice mini touch was a little three item dessert plate on the desk as a welcoming treat. Aside from the bottles in your room, there are free bottled water and apples on a table by the elevator on each floor. Our doorman/porter, Victor, was so friendly. The hotel offers a guided tour of hotel, which Victor provided. He told us the history of the hotel, took us up the vintage elevator, talked about the stained glass ceiling and pointed out where the artist signature was located and walked us outside to point out the exterior features. The hotel was the setting of the filming of the opening scenes of 007's Spectre and Victor described the filming of the movie. Also, later I determined that I did not pack the pants to my black suit and Victor gave me suggestions as to where I could get a pair of dress slacks, which I was able to purchase. Saved my day, as I had a wedding to attend in two days. Great service Victor! The hotel borders the Zocalo, the large square where the National Palace, Metropolitan Cathedral and other government buildings are located. The shopping district is next to the hotel and the Templo Mayor museum is located nearby. A café is in the lobby that serves a buffet breakfast for $160pesos or $100pesos if you include it in your booking. The Terraza open-air restaurant is on the rooftop and offering a great view of the Zocalo. It was a great way to start our visit to Mexico City. A beautiful hotel with great service and amenities in a convenient location. Since it was our first time here, it really made us feel comfortable and enjoy this beauty city.

Yelp
This review is for anyone interested in visiting the hotel for a meal, drink, or to enjoy the famous architecture. As of now, the hotel is closed unless you have reservations to stay as a guest. We were told they will remain closed to all outside public until DF is in the Green Zone, which will take months. If you're interested in dining here you're only allowed to eat outside of the hotel entrance on the street and may not enter the hotel.

Douglas B.

Yelp
The hotel and staff were phenomenal. Greeted with a glass of champagne at check-in and taken to our room overlooking the Zoccolo was fantastic. I have read that others complain of the noise, however I had no trouble with any noise as the windows were very thick and secure. It was the week of Day of the Dead so many processions, parades and protests. Noise was no issue. My sole complaint is the 4th floor dining area. The buffet (only option) was tasteless, barely warm and not a great variety. Not much of veggie options either. At dinner the buffet includes "all you can drink" but the drinks were watered down and were also tastless. The dining staff were standoffish as well. I was so looking forward to breakfast and dinner looking over the Zoccolo and enjoying the festivities. However all I wanted to do was leave as the food was so poor. I would recommend eating elsewhere as every other place we went in CDMX was great.

Yelp
Pros: -price is super cheap, I think for an upgraded zocalo room it's around $350 a night. My husband and I liked the location as well. It's super safe and it's a close walk to palacio bellas artes, templo mayor and other museums. -We arrived there at night and we were still walking around exploring centro historico till around midnight. There was a super cool mezcalaria 2 blocks away from the hotel that was suuuuuper awesome!! We stumbled our way back to the hotel very drunk one of the nights and felt very safe!! Super safe location - water pressure in shower is great! Toilet paper was surprisingly okay (not the greatest but still doesnt feel like your wiping with straight paper) - hotel always have bottled water around for free so you never feel like you have to buy bottled water all the time! -hotel is beautiful and felt very antique Cons: -there was a rally right outside at the zocalo and it woke us up at 5am.. it was a dude on a megaphone that wouldn't shut up!! Imagine being very hungover and getting woke up by this -the A/C freaking suuuuuuuuuuuuuucked. It was so hot in our room!! Like sleep naked with no blankets hot and still sweating.

Yelp
This review is for the restaurant with spectacular views. The photos don't do it justice. The staff was friendly and drinks and desserts were tasty. Will go back for round two the next time k head to the City.

Yelp
It was an awesome weekend stay. The hotel is gorgeous, the staff so nice, kind, and polite. Out room was so spacious, with an awesome view to the Zocalo and so romantic. Well except the tent city below, but from the height of our room and was easily overlooked. The rooftop restaurant was delicious and views are stunning. Again wait staff was very nice and helpful. I will be returning to the city solely for this hotel and the taco shop around the corner from here.
google avatar

Lily S.

Yelp
Conveniently located in the center of downtown, not pricey considering that. The exterior looks as if it's a historic hotel (I've no idea whether or not it is); the interior ceiling is gorgeous. Very friendly front desk receptionists and they all seem to speak pretty good English. Treats available throughout the day: free bottled water, champagne, Mexican confections, coffee. Front desk can exchange currencies and will call cabs for guests. Our room was spacious. The night of our check-in we saw a plate of sweet treats on the desk with our name written in chocolate! The only complaints here are the extremely spotty Wi-Fi (took FOREVER to connect too) and the party noise that consistently came on at around 11pm on the nights we stayed. The shower had poor drainage so water would leak out a little but other than that, comfy bed! We also enjoyed the restaurant on-site that serves a pretty good breakfast! 3.5 stars overall.

Yelp
Simply stunning cocktails food service and view!! Stayed at the Gran hotel ate dinner here every night

Yelp
I am currently at the bar in the Gran hotel Ciudad de Mexico...this is the worst margarita I've had in my life!!! I've stayed here in the past and it was pleasant...today it's just shame and chipped glasses. When a mango and coco margarita tastes better than a standard margarita, you know the quality is poor. This is disgusting; I hate my life right now... *VOM*

Diego R.

Yelp
Great brunch with an amazing view! Service was outstanding and the mini tour of the hotel at the beginning was very informative.
google avatar

Yelp
This hotel is super close to the tourist area. Lots to do near by. The hotel itself is a historic an so beautiful. The ceilings are all actual Tiffany All the iron works is fantastic. The room was a nice size. Good water pressure in the shower for those that care about that short of thing. Staff was very friendly. Great first stop in Mexico city.
google avatar

Yelp
If I ever go back to Mexico City, I can see myself dining here again. For us U.S. Americans, this place is around 20 USD? Which I believe is very cheap for the amazing and luxurious buffet they offer. Word of advice is to book in advance! If you're a fan of the Netflix series Sense8 then this place should look very familiar as the picture of the interior is where Lito has an interview & the picture of the view is where he eats. I really enjoyed the desserts and the food they offered but what I found to be a hidden gem were the juices! The juices (all of them because I tried them all) were very fresh!
google avatar

Karen D.

Yelp
Love this place! We were greeted with champagne, and then we went up the historic elevator (that Daniel Craig rode up in "Spectre") to our 3rd floor room. There was a plate with pastries and strawberries w/ cream waiting for us, as well as chilled water in the mini-fridge. Absolutely beautiful views from the balcony! especially at night. The room itself was also gorgeous, from the excessive pillows to the drapes to the vintage looking bathtub. Plenty of toiletries - even a shoe shine cloth in case you forgot anything. In the evenings, there is a pianist in the lounge, and you can sip on complimentary champagne. There are apples and bottles of water on the upper floors for convenience. Service here was impeccable. For ex., there is always someone to accompany you up the vintage elevators. They also have amazing vases of flowers, and a few bird cages. The ceiling, however, was my favorite. Def highly recommend!

Yelp
Ducked in to take some photos and have a cold beverage and it was a fine time, here's why: * Majestic * Regal * Historic This place is a huge, eye-catching and historic gem of a property. Yes, this is the place you saw in the opening scenes of the latest Bond film, "Spectre." I was not a guest, but was treated like a star. Good stuff, Cabeza OUT!
google avatar

Manuel V.

Yelp
One thing it's to go to a beautiful hotel, another it's to be in one with lots of History on it. This place has it all! Staff it's welcoming and detailed oriented. Pictures says it all!
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful view from the terrace restaurant - do not eat there!! We've been twice with out of town guests to have an afternoon meal overlooking the Zocalo. Both times we have shortly thereafter been frantically looking for a bathroom. Each time, everyone ate very different things - salmon, steak, soup only, margarita only, and every person experienced Monctezuma's revenge. It must be the food handling or dishwashing. Try the terrace El Mayor or if you come here maybe try bottle beer only directly out of the bottle... but don't say you weren't warned! The hotel lobby is gorgeous btw. :)
google avatar

Jordan H.

Yelp
Come for the view, stay for the view! Seriously, the view is about the only thing that makes this place worthwhile; but WHAT a view! This restaurant features a terrace overlooking the Zocalo, Mexico Cities' Main Square. Clearly visible are the dazzling Cathedral, the Mexican National Palace and some other old-a** building. There's no better place in latin America to stand and silently pretend to be a tin-pot dictator overlooking your oppressed dominion.

Pablo P.

Yelp
Terraza Restaurant & Bar is so perfect! Especially for the views of the cathedral & Zocalo It's a must Margaritas are the best !

Yelp
Beautiful hotel to visit! Come see the European glamour here! Breakfast is fabulous as well. Then just walk around the square and see more historical sites.

Yelp
We stayed here for three nights. It is very clean and the staff are friendly and helpful. I like the bed and the pillows too. Some hotels have 10 pillows, but none of them fit. Here has two pillows per bed in the two queen bed room and the pillow is quite comfortable. Breakfast is 1 usd per day and I think itbis good deal considering the price. The shower is very nice as well. Most importantly. The location is excellent.
google avatar

Yelp
The most elegant hotel stay ever. The service is outstanding. Generously furnished and CLEAN. Generous water pressure and temperature. Two thermostats kept my room comfortable. Will return!

Yelp
I have stayed at the Grand Hotel twice with my family. The rooms are lovely old world, high ceiling rooms, full of history and charm. We discovered La Terraza on our first night in Mexico City. I loved sitting in an open air restaurant, high above the city, overlooking the Zocolo and the city lights. A trip to Mexico City will never be complete without a stay at the Grand Hotel.

Yelp
Gran Hotel Ciudad Mexico really goes above and beyond in all aspects. Location - Right on Zocalo Square in Centro Historico - right next to the Palacio Nacional, the Grand Cathedral, and walking distance from Bellas Artes. Quality - This hotel is absolutely beautiful. It has an art deco vibe with a rounded stained glass rooftop, old school elevators, and bird cages. They have a terrace restaurant where you can look out on famous Zocalo square. Fun fact: TWO Bond movies have been filmed here. While many hotels today are focused on being modern, this hotel really does a great job of keeping the old historic charm keeping with the theme of Centro Historico. Service - The staff really goes above and beyond here. From checkin, we were given two glasses of champagne, one of the staff helped me with the safe because I didn't understand (and was very patient), they gave us little treats each night and cake when they saw it was my birthday (and they sung to me in Spanish). Food - They have a restaurant on the Terrace - they are open for breakfast and dinner (I'm sure they have lunch too) - Wasn't really wowed by the dinner menu, but their guacamole was amazing and the view is unbeatable. LOVED the all you can eat brunch (Mexican style food) - pastries, mimosas, tacos, tamales, fruit, salad, yogurt -- the works. They also have a "cafeteria" on the main level where you can get a more casual breakfast - food also very good and they accommodate special requests My only warning (not a complaint about the hotel itself) is that our room faced the side street (not the square) and there was a club located diagonally across from our room that blasted their music from 11p-4a. They played the bass so loud that I could FEEL the vibrations in our room. Obviously not the hotel's fault, but something to look out for when you are requesting a room. The hotel staff was very generous and offered to move us into a quieter room, but I just got earplugs and dealt with it. HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend this place for your first visit to Mexico City. Incredibly affordable too!

Yelp
I had a good experience with this hotel. We stayed 2 nights at this hotel and so far we did not have any problems. They have good customer service, good attitude and very close to local places. I really like the bathroom, the bathroom had a tub that was good structure so you can relax. In ever closet door it has a mirror which was really cool. It had a safe but we did not use it because we didn't understand how to do it. We receive many advice to eat from the people from the front of the door ! Overall everything was excellent! I will return back to this hotel soon and I will recommend this hotel also !

Yelp
Beautiful lobby ceiling and check-in space. The pics you see on the brochure and reviews are accurate, it's that beautiful. This hotel is nice for one or two nites, especial if you upgrade and get the square facing rooms with a balcony. "Loud" is an understatement since Mexico City is already a loud city and you'll get plenty of extra noise from the square. Friendly, English speaking staff, very attentive to your requests. Room service food is good, better than some local restaurants even. Decorations a little out of date, but clean and period correct for the hotel Comfortable bed Entrance is 1/2 block up a walking only street, keep in mind if traveling with luggage.

Yelp
A truly handsome building with an amazing Tiffany glass ceiling that must be seen to be believed. The central location is great, and our room had a fantastic view of the Zocalo. If the thought of a historic building in a historic location sounds great to you, you'll be very happy here. The building is old, and there are minor flaws and cracks here and there, so some might prefer a more modern hotel, but we were very happy. The staff are all helpful and friendly. The ladies at the desk were efficient in helping us with restaurant reservations and calling taxis.

Yelp
16 August 2014: Didn't stay at this hotel, we only stopped by for some coffee and dessert after sightseeing for the day. I had hot chocolate and a slice of chocolate cake. J had strudel and coffee. We agreed that the hot chocolate was the absolute best either had ever had. It was perfect! Like, I still can't get over it. Everything else was ok; a little better than average, but not the best. And inexpensive. Although, I would've gladly paid $20 for everything because the hot chocolate was so good. The view from the balcony area of the Zocalo is amazing, too. I mean, if you're into that kinda thing.

Yelp
Amazing service. I didn't get a menu today but a full on Mexican buffet. Everything was delicious. But most of all, what was worth it was the amazing view of the Zocalo. I fully recommend this beautiful hotel and restaurant.

Yelp
Glorious historic hotel at an affordable price. We couldn't have asked for a better hotel for our first trip to Mexico City. We arrived with an itinerary packed full of sightseeing and dinning. The hotel's location made it an ideal base to rest, in luxury, while planning our next venture around D.F. Free wifi was quite helpful and worked perfectly. The building is just amazing, the inside is so grand and beautiful with the stain glass ceiling, it really does give you a feeling of being back in time. Upon check in, the staff was so kind and gracious. We were shown to our room and provide a small welcome gift and a nice dessert plate bed side. After a day of travel to an unknown place, this was a very nice touch that made us feel so welcomed and at home. The room was decorated nicely in a traditional manner. The bed was extremely comfortable and the room quite. I would definitely stay here again upon my next visit to Mexico. The Gran Hotel truly set the stage for our trip and enabled us to really enjoy the beauty and warmth of Mexico's impressive capital city.
