This is a very old hotel. The only ac is a wall mounted unit in the small room and in the restaurant. Hot water, and sometimes any water, is sporadic. In fact, we got here two days ago and have yet to have even a warm shower. The wifi is the same. On and off all day long. The shower and toilet drain ever so slowly. In the lobby it is particularly warm and muggy. The staff are very friendly, especially the restaurant staff. Good meals there. I can not recommend this place even for the low price of $65 per night. A good example of you get what you pay for.

Totally retro cool hotel! Anytime I'm in Merida this is my go to hotel. I get a laugh out of the reviews about the old room furniture. They're called antiques! Imagine stepping into a time capsule of the finest hotel in the Yucatan where guests have been coming for over a hundred years. You can feel the history when you walk in the front door. The hotel was built in 1901. It is one of the city's historic landmarks blending European influences with local traditions architecturally. It was designed by the Italian architect Giovanni Mengoni, who was known for his work in Mexico during the Porfiriato era (the period of Porfirio Díaz's rule). The hotel was commissioned by a wealthy local family and became one of the most luxurious establishments in Mérida. Its architecture reflects the European influence prevalent during that period, with neoclassical and French-inspired elements. The hotel has been a significant part of Mérida's cultural and social history. Yes, the place has a few minor deferred maintenance issues but that's part of the charm of this grande old dame. Anyone complaining about the condition of the building should go stay at a sterile corporate hotel for triple the cost. The hotel is not ADA compliant as there is no elevator. You and your possessions are completely safe at this hotel. There is a personal safe in each room. The lobby and the balconies looking down on the lobby are spectacular. You'll think you're in a movie. There's a gorgeous park directly outside the entrance. Many rooms have balconies. Be sure to request a room with a balcony so you're looking out over the beautiful park outside. Air conditioning in the rooms are ice cold if you like it that way. There is a Starbucks and a Santa Clara premium gelato/sorbet shop attached to the lobby. Best and most scenic location in Merida. You'll never find a more historic and charming hotel for the price than the El Gran Hotel.

A unique experience at a low price. You feel like you stepped back in time. |A lovely historic hotel built in 1901 in a prime location just one block from the main plaza. Be aware, all rooms are on the second and third floors and there is no elevator. If you have physical limitations with stairs, this hotel is not for you. However, the porter will take your luggage to your room. Our third-floor room had a comfortable king-size bed, high ceilings, and two windows with sliding doors opening to small balconies. The room was conditioned by a quiet and effective mini split. Small TV with only Spanish channels. Our room was a good size, but the toilet and shower section was tight. Wooden period furniture and trim. There are plenty of places to sit on each floor to admire the antiques. Maid service available by request.||The lobby is not air conditioned. The lobby center is an open atrium that gets wet when it rains. It’s dry around the sides and antiques are on display. If you are not staying here, it’s worth just walking through the lobby (open to the public). There is a Starbucks and an ice cream shop flanking the lobby entrance. Lots of good restaurants are just steps away. You will hear road noise, but it didn’t bother us. The staff were helpful when needed and they were able to book our excursions with the pickup at the hotel.| |Here are some of the amenities this hotel does not have: No pool, fitness center, business center, bar-restaurant, room service, in-room coffee, electronic key card lock, Big TV with English language station, etc. We didn’t need or miss these. Better to keep the character of this old hotel. We didn't have a car, they offer parking, but it's two blocks away. We spent a week there and thoroughly enjoyed the non-resort.

It’s like stepping back in time at this beautiful hotel. The service is very friendly, the location fantastic and the rooms have an old world charm with modern conveniences. However, the noise coming into our room - 106- from the band on the street thur - sat till after midnight was intolerable. I’m not sure if this is an ongoing thing or just during high season, but way more sound proofing needs to be done on the rooms facing the plaza which also has a night market with a lot of noise. The curtains as well are not block out and let light through. The free parking was great, just a block away from the hotel and very easy. If you are parking just ask for directions before going to the hotel to make it easier. A lovely hotel, fantastic location but just way to much noise coming into our room to make it a pleasant stay.

The interior of the hotel lobby and stairs are very beautiful and well preserved although from the period. The rooms, however, are very poor and lack any modernity and appear to have been poorly upgraded some years ago. The beds were comfortable but the bathroom was unacceptable for a hotel in 2025. Generally our room felt unclean and dark because of the deterioration and brown tasteless decor.

You get what you pay for (and it is : very cheap). The location is ideal, smack dab in the heart of Merida. The common parts of the hotel itself are gorgeous, although it could do with a little renovation. Our room was very small (the very smallest of the whole place I believe), furniture was old but we slept really well. The big downside was the bathroom, which I felt was not acceptable as it was very old and rusty. Just a quick warning: there is no possibility to have breakfast on the premises, unless you head to the Starbucks.

Historic old hotel in the center of the city. Walking distance to great restaurants, cathedral, and Grand Plaza. The staff were wonderful, very helpful and friendly.

The employees here were very friendly and helpful. This place is very safe and central located. I can't believe the reasonably price per night. The hotel has very old history and when walking into the hotel, you get a feeling how it was in like many many years ago. I would definitely stay here again and again. A++
