If you are looking for a true Bermuda experience staycation or vacation look no further than The Granaway. Don’t get me wrong – our family loves hotels, but wanted something special and The Granaway in Warwick Bermuda delivered. ||||Carol, her husband Michael and their caretaker Francisco have the true Bermudian spirit of friendliness and hospitality. They are warm, inviting and went out of their way to make us feel not like guests but family. The Granaway is a traditional Bermuda estate from the 1700s and delightfully quirky. The hosts live above the guest rooms (all with en-suite bathrooms, all with harbor views), and the cottage we stayed in is located next to the main house. ||||The guest cottage has a full kitchen, queen bed and Francisco put in a rollaway bed for our son. There is a full bath – it does have a step-up into the bathroom (and step down into the cottage) so may not be ideal for those in wheelchairs. The cottage has a private garden with loungers and a table that is the perfect place to watch the sunset or have breakfast. The continental breakfasts were divine – served on china with little pots and tins of marmalades, jams, and fresh fruits, eggs, fresh-baked muffins and toast. Juices, tea and coffee – oh, the coffee was wonderful. This is not your standard “continental” breakfast – far beyond our expectations. ||||The Granaway property is divided into all sorts of nooks and crannies, with gardens full of hand-made mosaics, local flowers, banana trees – it’s wildly cultivated and so, so relaxing. There are also tucked away seating areas perfect for lazy afternoons of tea and reading, and a private dock right on Hamilton Harbor for easy boat access or swimming. By far our favorite area was the pool. It is just beautiful, has stairs for easy access and has a soothing fountain surrounded by stone walls, palm trees and flowering plants – a tropical oasis. There are grills tucked away behind it and the cottage that guests can use; my son spent hours swimming and playing every day. ||||For dining options The Granaway is located literally on the 17th hole at Belmont Golf Course which has Divots (casual dining), and Blu (fancy seafood) restaurants a 10 minute walk away. Aurora is at Newstead-Belmont hotel (different property than Belmont Golf Course) – a 5 minute cab ride away. There are grocery stores and delivery options as well within a few minutes drive and the Belmont ferry which takes you directly to Hamilton (5 minute walk on Harbour Road).||||This wonderful staycation cost half the going rate of the cheapest room of a hotel this weekend – hotels that don’t include breakfast and the experience of living in one of the oldest homes in Bermuda. Carol, Michael and Francisco personify hospitality and the Bermuda spirit. Cannot more highly recommend, and cannot wait to come back!
