"Modernist Café Culture in Prague Prague’s Grand Café Orient is the only cubist-designed space of its kind in the world. It occupies the first floor of the House of the Black Madonna, designed in 1911 by modernist architect Josef Gočár. Renovated in 2005, the spacious café retains the original silk-shaded hanging brass lanterns and marble-topped buffet-bar. Diners can enjoy such menu highlights as Prague ham and apple strudel or tartar of smoked salmon with black caviar and lettuce, and then visit the Museum of Czech Cubism upstairs."

Surprisingly good! I was braced for a terrible tourist trap (but that’s actually the place on the ground floor). I came to see the decor, not for the food. However, the omelette was very tasty! Service could be improved since the place was empty, but overall a pleasant surprise!

TO AVOID *Waiters do not pay attention from start to end *Food took +30 min for 2 ciabatta sandwiches & 1 biscuits *Quality of food was any other sandwiches shops *At payment being told "Cash" only while mentioned/written nowhere...then miraculously Credit Card terminal appeared *Being asked if we wished to leave tips to the waiter.... probably among the fastest NO i ever give. DO NOT RECOMMEND

Previous to our visit we watch and read a lot about this place recommended by the beauty of its design as a reference to cubism arquitecture and great coffee to enjoy. “A jewel for all fans of design and architecture. The House of the Black Madonna, designed by architect Josef Gočár is an iconic work of Czech Cubism. In addition to the enchanting interior, we recommend visiting the museum of Cubism in the same building. One of the café’s sweet specialities is their custard-filled choux pastry “věneček”; in a charming nod to Cubism, the pastry is executed here as a square rather than the usual circle.” The thing is that we couldn’t get anything to drink here, it was pretty much empty with few tables and two or three waiters were not enough to attend us during the 15 minutes we waited so we stood up and leave.

Google
Seen the Grand Cafe Orient (Prague) getting great reviews on YouTube, so thought we'd try it. The cafe itself looks very nice and is clean, however the waiter was very frosty towards us. Smiley and chatty with other people in the cafe, I'd presume locals, but for tourists you get the bare minimum with one word answers. The food was ok, a little overpriced compared to lots of places in Prague. I asked for the bill (twice) only to be told they only accept cash. I said I only have card payment. I was told to go and use a cash machine outside. I thought this was unacceptable and pointed out that there was no sign in the building saying cash only. The only cash I had was in GBP, luckily just enough to cover the bill. Overall very disappointed and would definitely not go back again, mainly due to the rudeness of staff and lack of information about payment!!!

Honestly, the place looks so cool that I think I would recommend going no matter what. It's maybe the only time I felt this comfortable in a bar, the music was nice and not overwhelming, the noise was very manageable and we could have a conversation without strain. We had cakes, tea and hot chocolate. Cakes are good, the Grand Orient Cake had a very balanced mint flavour which was really nice (esp. considering I don't usually like mint in my cakes), so kudos for that. Architecturally, this place is amazing. The service though... Not giving. Oh well 🤷

Google
The Grand Cafe Orient is located on the 2nd floor many people get the Cerna Madona Cafe located on the lower floor confused. The selection of pastries and food is plenty. To start we ordered a cappuccino and americano coffee. We both ordered the croissant and Scrambled eggs. The service was superb. We were not rushed. What made this Cafe interesting was its cubist decor.

Google
Reasonable priced menu Lovely architecture, for sure Not enough staffing so it took so long to order. The staff was a bit rude to be honest In the evening the light was dim but not in a romantic way, in a blind way You have to reserve to have a seat at the cushion table. Other tables with hard chairs are hard to enjoy

Google
Funny enough! I really don’t recommend this cafe, Cafe Louvre is so much better in terms of price and service, incomparable. And so funny that when I sat down and read the review, I saw other comments about they only accept cash, so I asked the lady if it’s ok we can pay card. She told me they prefer cash, I said we don’t have and we were able to go. Then she said ok ok, the machine should work today I just restarted it. 🤣 oh my god! Literally, the worst lie ever. The orange juice not even fresh, the sandwich—omg! What a scam 🤣cozy 6.5 euro for this shit

Yelp
Surprisingly, we came here twice and our favorite things were the pumpkin soup and the lemonade! I would go over to If Cafe for dessert, and eggs... A lot of hype, but a gorgeous cubist cafe and big outdoor area, food came out fast, and service was friendly both times. Worth it if you don't have to wait.

Yelp
A bit touristy but very nice design and I had a great experience here. Food: Croque Madame (249 CZK) was very tasty- cheese was nicely melted and I especially liked the creamy sauce on top. Boost Smoothie (99 CZK) was decent, although more like a juice and slightly small portion size. Raspberry Cake (199 CZK) for dessert was great with a chocolate shell on the bottom and raspberry flavored top swirl. Environment: The most unique part of this restaurant is that it is a rare cubist design, which has a modern and sleek appearance. The interior is very clean with bright natural light. It was actually not that busy when I went for brunch despite the location between the Old Town Square and Powder Gate. Service: The staff are friendly and attentive. The service speed was also pretty quick. Overall, I had a very pleasant experience dining at the Grand Cafe Orient, with good brunch food and a nice environment. While the food might be more 4 star than 5 star quality, it's certainly a great and convenient option for brunch.

Yelp
Chic little spot for an upscale meal whilst sight-seeing in Prague. I thoroughly enjoyed my prettily-presented little cheese plate, and the building itself is lovely.

Yelp
One of the famous cafes in the cubic style. They have a lot of outdoor seating and some inside seating upstairs. Good place for a coffee and pastries. Professional service and it feels like art deco inside.
google avatar

Yelp
The spot is cute and conveniently located near the old square. The cheese omelet was also pretty good - light and fluffy with multiple types of gooey cheese, a bit buttery. However, the service here is painfully slow. It took a long time to get the menu, to order, to get our food, and to pay. We ended up being there for about an hour, which is excessively long for one omelet, a slice of cake, and a tea. Additionally, when we went, we were one of only three tables and there were about 4 servers. The servers seemed more interested in talking to each other than in helping. Main reason to go here is for the decor and decent balcony view.

Yelp
We had heard good things about this restaurant. The pastries are amazing! We arrived during the lunch hour and it was busy so service took a little longer. We ordered four pastries and all of them were great. The building is Cubist and is worth a visit in its own right.

Yelp
This may be in the touristy section of Old Town, yet we had the most incredible traditional Czech desserts here. The veneček pastry was a delectable pastry filled with creme and topped with a delicate lemon icing. The rakvička pastry (coffin pastry) was a crisp shell that was light yet memorable. Service was quick, yet so be aware: it's cash only.

Mary H.

Yelp
Very delicious coffee and treats, great late night spot. We ordered the cheesecake and coffee with baileys which hit the spot.
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
We stopped for coffee, hot chocolate and venecek. It was all good but slightly overpriced. I would say the place is incredibly decorated and unlike other reviews, we did receive great service. I would recommend and I would like to come back when it is good weather to get a seat on the terrace.

Yelp
Decent brunch spot at a decent price. Had the cafe latte with a grilled panini. It was yummy and satisfying. Does get packed quickly for brunch.

Eleanor C.

Yelp
Do not go here. Total tourist trap and totally not worth it. Wasted my time for some average food and the waiter was extremely rude to me. I felt rushed and unwanted.

Yelp
Cafe Grand Orient is the Cafe associated with the House of the Black Madonna - the official museum of Czech cubism. That museum is well worth visiting on its own. The artwork is magnificent. How is the Cafe? From the Standpoint of Food - Three Stars. Standard Cafe fare. From the Standpoint of Decor - Four Stars. The ground floor outside cafe is no great shakes - but if you go up to the first floor it is decorated in Art Deco and is really pretty. From the Standpoint of Eastern or Phenomenological Philosophy - Nine Hundred and Two Stars. Cubism is as much a philosophical movement as an artistic convention. All of the art is about objects and light as both substantial and insubstantial and about all phenomena as permanent and ever changing. The Czechs got this more than just about anyone else - and this shows up in everything in the House of the Black Madonna. So if you have some sort of philosophical outlook that can deconstruct things or a mystic practice that sees through superficial manifestations to perceive transcendental essences - you will have the time of your life doing what you do at the Grand Cafe Orient. If you are there for a great cup of coffee ---- meh.

Yelp
Gorgeous cafe with beautiful and delicious desserts, but definitely pricey for just a couple of pastries and an espresso.

Yelp
Location location location and big beautiful windows with lots of light ...that's what this place has going for it . I have to be upfront and say that cigarette smoke REALLY bothers me. My chest tightens, my eyes water and I hate the smell . Much like a lot of Europe I guess still, they allow smoking. Actually there 4 tables just as you walk in that are non smoking but it's just ridiculous as they abut all the smoking tables so it's defining as though you are trapped in a room with heavy smokers . We won't go back for that reason only ....and the fact that the snobby attitude of the servers but honestly I tried to rate stars based on food and location only however the smoke issue kept bringing it back down. I had the warm baguette with ham, mozzarella, and pesto ...I thought it was delicious. One other has the goat cheese salad and another the cold caprese baguette and they said it was just ok. We won't be back because of the smoke but the room is cool and with the big windows, there is light flooding in and views of the city belief you.
google avatar

Natalie H.

Yelp
Got a hot chocolate and a glass of wine before dinner time. My hot chocolate wasn't amazing, and the place allowed smoking within, and we were seated near the window, so we were subjected to cigarette smoke, freezing winter chills, on and off, as the waiter opened the window periodically to let the smoke out. Would not return.

Yelp
Bad service. Bad quality food and worse coffee. Apart from the location, it has few redeeming qualities.

Yelp
A sweet and historical spot just off the main square in Old Town Prague...it really cannot be beat. Just a few meters past the Astronomical Clock, the Black Madonna (a cubist architectural highlight) hosts this sweet café on the first floor. The room is well adorned with spacious seating and tables, plus plenty of options on the terrace that surrounds the building. A well curated menu of drinks, light bites, brunch, pastry, salads, and sandwiches makes this an ideal stopping point for any time of day. Three of us got milkshakes (banana, raspberry, and pistachio) and all of us were thrilled. The salads were fresh and delicious, and our dining friends had sandwiches that were equally enjoyable. I plan to bring many friends and family here when we take them to Prague in the not too distant future!

Yelp
A very cool cafe with interesting Art Deco interior that has, in my opinion, not much to do with Orient as the name suggests. It is a spacious cafe that serves nice coffee and small meals. I really like to come here in the summer when it is possible to sit on the balcony and watch people passing by. It is also a great place for a coffee or wine with friends. Since it's location is very central, it is often visited by tourists and can get a bit busy but otherwise the atmosphere is very relaxed. The service is sometimes a bit slow and the waiters are not very friendly but in general the level is ok.
google avatar

Amit K.

Yelp
This happened to close to our hotel. We had heard about it from the YouTube videos by Honest Guide to Prague. We glad we decided to have our first meal here. W me had a lite late lunch. The salads were great and so was th coffee. Good service. Experienced wait staff. No credit cards, only accept cash.
google avatar

Mackenzie K.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this place after walking from the astrological tour and I recognized it from and Honest Guide Prague video (highly recommend if you're planning a trip to Prague) where they recommended it so we stopped in. Got the venecek which was square shaped as the building is famous for its cubism architecture and some tea. Great service until it was time to pay. We were never told that they did not accept credit/debit cards, forcing us to pay in Euros not the czech currency as we didn't have any. We had no issue paying with cards anywhere else in Prague so not sure why this cafe doesn't accept them. Before this the waiter was super cheerful and nice, but after asking to pay with card he was standoffish.
google avatar

Brooks W.

Yelp
Beautiful setting in a great location but the experience for me was diminished by poor service and a waiter who took advantage of the cash only policy to short change an American tourist. Double count your change, here is how he did it to me. Unlike everyone else we met in Prague, the waiter either pretended, or actually did not speak any English. Then when we were done he was ignoring our table again so I had to go to the bar to pay. He worked his touch screen and pointed to a number, he did not present a proper receipt. But we were splitting the bill so I had already added it up, and the amount pointed to was right. I gave him a single large bill, he then counted out a handful of change and some bills that looked like it was close enough to not be a jerk tourist and count up all the coin. It's the Coins that will trip you up until you really know them. A 10kr is tiny and seems worthless by size, but is 10kr, 2kr are bigger, 1kr in between, 20kr are golden and much larger and heavier. In my case on day one of our trip the coins were full of 1kr. Lesson learned. Count your change. Now It's true that a 100kr short change is less than $5.00 US, but it shouldn't happen.

Yelp
A step back in time and a cubism gem, the interior together with the vibe and 30's music playing in the background is the thing to experience and enjoy while there. Take a coffee n read some paper printed newspapers;) Food is nothing special, but they have a good salmon tartare tho! The servers attitude is very professional but sometimes annoying while paying since they watch you when looking for money. Smth that doesn't really correspond with their kind of high end behavior..;D anyways, try it, there are not much other places like this in the world.
google avatar

Yelp
Read about this place and wanted to give it a try. Stumbled upon it by accident so of course I had to try it out. First impression was I loved the area, the cubism decor inside, the big windows letting in all the sunshine. Staff was nice, quick and accommodating. Only thing about this place was that they don't accept card. Make sure you bring cash or you're in for a not nice surprise. My friend and I both got lattes here, they were average I would say. I saw a bunch of food, it all did look good but for the same price you can walk a few minutes away and get the same crepes, breakfast plates and sandwiches for less. To me this place was more about going for the location, decor and ambiance then for the quality Of the stuff they had on offer. If that's your reasoning to go the I suggest this place by far for the experience.

Barb V.

Yelp
Lovely cafe, decent food, rude service. Such a shame they are not welcoming or open to questions.
google avatar

Tereza V.

Yelp
A unique space with special design in a beautiful building is definitely worth seeing. The staff were very attentive and I could not complain about the customer service at all.The only thing is the noise level is certainly up there. It did make it a bit hard to hear, even though the café wasn't that full...
google avatar

Elias D.

Yelp
This was recommended by a tour guide. Unfortunately upon arrival we were ignored for 5 minutes. I asked several times to speak with someone and was continually passed on. Finally, when someone spoke to me they just briskly barked "full" at me and asked my party to leave. Absolutely rude and disrespectful

Yelp
Whenever I'm in Prague, I make it a point to go here. At least once. Housed above the beautiful Cubist Museum in the famed 'House of the Black Madonna', this landmark cafe has a very interesting history that is fortunately printed on their menu in full. In short, it was designed by the architect from the ground up (even the light fixtures) and while sitting in it's classic wooden booths or on it's private balcony, you can almost imagine it as it once was. Nostalgia aside, this cafe is absolutely beautiful and a fine example of Cubism. There are almost always seats free, thanks to it being a bit hard to find for the average tourist, but if you want one of the luxurious benches or private-only-for-2-tables outside, you might need to wait. The food is very good, although recommended for breakfast or lighter eaters. A wide selection of pancakes (from sweet to meat) are available, as well as assorted sandwiches and breakfast spreads. The Turkish Coffee is absolutely delicious. No matter what you order, and if you at all ever enjoyed sweets, make sure you order the Chocolat Fondant, which must be Czech for 'most delicious thing ever'. A slice of the richest chocolate heaven covered in Marzipan with a side of whipped cream and stewed plums. It's worth it to come in for a coffee and this alone.

Sofia K.

Yelp
Great selection of delicious deserts and fast service. The location is central and the view from inside is amazing. Our party of 6 was very satisfied.
google avatar

Brock R.

Yelp
Staff doesn't understand proper table management, so it can be difficult to get a seat when you have 1-2 ppl sitting at 6-tops. Ordered the Turkish coffee, but it was not Turkish coffee, just presented that way, same cheap coffee most places serve. Staff was pretentious and not attentive. Would not return or recommend.
google avatar

Ewa W.

Yelp
Worst Aperol Spritz ever! Not much Aperol and not much Prosecco either. Ice, water and perhaps a bit a orange juice. Not to be recommended!
google avatar

Brooke R.

Yelp
I love this place! The atmosphere is so relaxing. I felt like I stepped back in time! I typically come here for a mid-morning tea and pastry, but their menu and coffee are also excellent. Their service is warm, friendly and patient. This place is definitely on the repeat business list!
google avatar

Marcello S.

Yelp
Oh, this is a place I will visit first place when I'm next time in Prague, Go to the balcony and do not forget to order carrot cake....
google avatar

Natalia D.

Yelp
This place looks quite special and is worth visiting at least once to feel the atmosphere of the first half of the 20th century. It is located next to the museum of Czech cubism and properly decorated responding to the spirit of those days. They have a nice choice of drinks including variations of coffee, usual offer of tea and hot milk. The pancakes and desserts are pretty tasty, too. The place is of average size and usually full, so be ready to wait for a table (especially with a bigger group). The waiters aren't really smiley, the service can be slow and sometimes they unfortunately look like they are making you a favour by actually serving you. However, some years ago in Czech Republic such an attitude to the customers was much more common than now, so don't let it get you into a bad mood - in general, this cafe isn't bad.
google avatar

Troy M.

Yelp
We went to the Grand Cafe on a Monday night at 8pm. We were literally the only people in the entire place. After a long wait, the waiter came by to take our drink order. He was extremely rude to us and we decided to leave at that point. I see now why the restaurant was empty.
google avatar

Veru B.

Yelp
My favourite place for coffee - this place reminds me of old times ... Time stops there and suddenly you feel like being back in the middle of last century ... They serve decent breakfasts, old style coffees ... Great deserts. It is magical place in the vey heart of Prague.

Cam M.

Yelp
Awful service, the crepe was not done. Go somewhere else. Good location on top of black Madona.
google avatar

Yelp
After a rainy day of shopping in Prague (great deals to be had on leather goods!) my daughter and I were very happy to meet my husband at this cafe. It is on the second floor, we had a window booth, and looked down at the square. it was so relaxing and refreshing for an afternoon break, and the ginger tea I had was delicious. Check out the cubist piano and stool. i looked at it when the pianist took a short break.
google avatar

Jon T.

Yelp
Service was non-existent, took forever to just order a drink and never came back take a food order so we left after our drinks. Also doesn't accept credit cards. Was not impressed. The view wasn't bad, and the atmosphere was alright. However, the interior stank of smoke and tables at the booths were oddly shaped which would make eating uncomfortable.
google avatar

Kate O.

Yelp
I felt like I stepped back into 1910's at this cafe. We stopped by this place along our walking tour route to grab something to drink and sweets to munch on. I had the chocolate truffle cake and a lemonade. They are very good. The lemonade was a bit more sour that I'm used to, but it provided a nice contrast to the cake. Yum!
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
Good coffee, great 20's style interior design but not a lot of choice for breakfast.. Check out the menu on the restaurants website before going.
google avatar

Yelp
Shooting on the balcony feels like being indoors with people and cars going by. Great relaxation spot.
google avatar

Yelp
Prague has some glorious breakfasts. I got the American breakfast with the Ethiopia espresso. It didn't "wow" me like some of the others I've had while living here, but it was still very good for its cost. The atmosphere is business-like - definitely not a mom and pop shop. I'll be back for more some time soon!
google avatar

Kenneth K.

Yelp
Nice space but overall nothing special. Waiters are not very gracious. Be careful, no credit cards.
google avatar

Andrew T.

Yelp
Really nice cafe with really friendly staff. Nice location in the old town, a great place to sit outside and have a drink. Menu was a bit eclectic but the sandwiches did look good. I enjoyed my mushroom pancake, but the chicken was a tad dry.
google avatar

Qype User (mishka…)

Yelp
Very slow and unfriendly service from the server. Obvious they didn't want "my kind" in the café premises. The coffee I got was bland and not worth the 1 hour wait. A tourist trap if you ask me. Put some cubes on the menu and some vintage looking lampshades, and voilà tourists will buy the idea of an authentic cubist café. My advice, don't waste your money.
google avatar

Brian R.

Yelp
A unique place and design that was worth seeing, but left us wishing we had left just after looking inside. Most tables were smokers and so clouds almost hung over our heads, but we were tired and hoped to have a bite before retiring. The food was fine, but beyond what other cafes have served. One irk was that the soda sizes had been reduced in a quick scribble in the menu, yet the prices remained unchanged. Having eaten at a half-dozen places or more in Prague, no restaurant or cafe charged more for less than Grand Cafe Orient. Finally, I understand that the wait staff can take a different pace that in America, but having to flag them down for every step in the process was tiring, especially to request utensils so that my wife and I could share the dessert. So when we finally had the bill and learned that they do not accept credit, we worked to gather the cash to pay and then as the waiter watched, he tapped the bill and said, "The tip is not included."

Katie B.

Yelp
Hot chocolate was great, service was not. I think the waiter spoke 8 words to us the whole time we were there. When we walked in he just waved for us to sit and didn't bother coming to greet or sit us. Throughout the rest of my lunch multiple groups of people came in, looked confused when no one bothered to seat them, and left. I wonder if they know that they are losing business! Then when we asked for the check and I attempted to pay with card he said they only accepted cash. I had purposely searched the restaurant and menu when I walked it to make sure it didn't say no cards accepted and I didn't see it anywhere. After my boyfriend left to go find an ATM and we paid, the waiter stood over me after he gave me change, said "tips aren't included" (now he decides to talk?!), and stared at me as if he was waiting for me to tip him right there. The staff needs to learn basic politeness because little tips were deserved for the lack of service I received
