During our 2-night stay at the Grand Canyon Lodge North Rim (a little misleading, because we were sleeping in a Pioneer Cabin...another story), we ate in the Lodge Dining Room twice. The first morning there we had breakfast, and the last evening we did dinner, with a reservation.
Breakfast was buffet style, although I think you could order from a menu if you chose that option. We waited about 10 minutes to be seated, which was surprising because about half of the tables were open. But then we heard someone tell the hostess that they had ran out of clean silverware. There seemed to be a lot of chaos, so we opted to do the buffet as opposed to waiting on orders. Turned out to be the right choice, because we waited another 10 minutes before someone stopped by to pour some coffee. The buffet was pretty basic, so no real complaints there. But on the service side, they really struggled and were either under-staffed or under-trained....or both. 3 stars on breakfast.
For dinner, it was a different experience. We had a reservation, and were seated within a few minutes of our time. Guy was our server, and he was good. Very friendly, and did a good job of checking back on us. Also was very open to answering any questions we had about the Lodge or the Canyon, and actually gave us directions to a spot nearby to watch the sunset. My wife ordered the Lees Ferry Trout, and I had the Brisket Platter. We were both very happy with our dishes. She finished hers, but the pile of brisket they brought me was so large, I couldn't eat it all. But I sure tried. A couple of drinks, and we were set for the night....after that sunset location. I would go 4.5 stars on dinner.
Overall, you don't have a lot of options if you're at the North Rim, and staying at one of the cabins there. But we honestly found this to be just fine.
