How to Shop for Natural Wine | Eater

"A Washington, D.C. shop focused on Latin American, Spanish, and Portuguese wines, with about half its inventory labeled as natural. The store intentionally keeps shelf labels sparse to prompt conversation rather than overwhelm customers with information, and the co-founder runs frequent events with importers and producers—often paired with snacks—and offers classes for those who want a deeper education. Staff use discovery conversations to introduce shoppers to unexpected regions (for example, natural Malbecs from Argentina) and to help customers find wines based on reference bottles or favorite flavor notes." - Abigail Koffler

This place shouldn't be a hidden gem to anyone! The concept is wonderful as they bring amazing and unexpected experiences and different types of wines, rums, bubbles, and many more liquors and cocktails mainly focused from Latin American producers. They also have snacks and tapas. Always very clean and organized, and well stacked. Can't forget about the staff. Always knowledgeable and willing to help with a big smile. This place is a must! We are members, and the membership is totally worth checking out specially for the price. I know they also have a bar located at Cocecha at Union Market, so check that out as well. You won't regret the experience!

Google
It's a Latin American Wines shop. Was there for an Uruguayan wine tasting. Absolutely fascinating variety of good wines from Uruguay. Make sure to get a bottle of Uruguayan wine, you won't regret it. Just keep in mind that if you try the Tannat (which is the traditional/national sort of wine of Uruguay) which has a rich complex of flavors with a strong juicy acidity, that's because in Uruguay they usually drink it with steaks and meat in general, which balances the flavors. Otherwise, they produce almost all kinds of known common wines aside from Tannat. Grand Cata has a unique collection of not only Uruguayan wines, but from other Latin countries like Chile, and Argentina. Super friendly staff and very friendly vibe, they also sell other products to compliment wine 🍷 like Spanish jamon, olives 🫒 and other appetizers.

Google
My favorite place to buy wine in DC. They have unusual Latin based wines that are a nice treat away from the old world classics that flood the DC market. Go expo something new. The staff are very helpful and easy talk to about their passion.

Google
Latin wine-focused shop with a large selection of alcoholic beverages, non-alcoholic drinks, food, and gifts. They have a fantastic monthly wine club and are always pouring free tastings of featured wines and holding fun events. A neighborhood gem with friendly staff...you can’t miss it!

Google
This is my favorite wine shop in D.C., and their wine club is great. I love that they host so many fun events and tastings.

Google
Wines and spirits of Latin America. If you're seeking unique and different, this is your place. I walked out with a sparkling wine from Brazil. Note, the Shaw location is the flagship if you're looking for a wide selection. They have really fun and approachable tastings every once in awhile on the weekends - keep your eyes on their Instagram account. During the week their tastings are more guided classes on a specific wine style.

Google
My husband and I went here for our anniversary and I wish we hadn’t. The staff acted inconvenienced by our visit even though it was completely empty and annoyed by our questions about varietals. We did buy some wine but mostly to limit how unwelcome we felt.

Francisco R

Google
Go to any of their wine tastings. The staff is very knowledgeable and the wine selection keeps on changing so there is always something new to try!

Yelp
I visited Grand Cata for a wine tasting class and had a fantastic experience! My friends and I were all true beginners, and our instructor immediately adapted the class for our specific needs and interests. We had a blast during our tasting, and we all left with a newfound respect for wine and its complexities as well as knowledge on how best to taste! We all also left with a few bottles of wine, too!

Yelp
Nice addition to this food hall! I had the chance to sit at the bar and try a refreshing wine flight, empanadas, and a charcuterie board. The waiters were very knowledgeable about the wine selections as well. I'll definitely visit again.

Yelp
This review is for Grand Cata MOSAIC DISTRICT IN FALLS CHURCH, VA. Absolutely beautiful shop and knowledgeable staff.

Yelp
Came here for their free wine tastings on a Friday. Ended up leaving with a bottle. You should check it out. Nice selection.

Yelp
Grand Cate is what you want every wine shop to be like- high ceilings, wood shelves, perfect lighting. From the moment you walk in, you feel like you're in a wine connoisseur's personal wine cellar. The shelves are lined with specially curated wine from across Latin America. There are reds, whites, roses, they have wine for everyone. If you're overwhelmed by the selection, talk to someone on staff. Each is willing to guide you. Compared to other wine shops in the area, the prices are on par. If you love wine, go to Grand Cata!

Yelp
I have popped into this place a few times and each time I have a great time. The guys who work here are really cool and actively engage you about their wine and its origins. Yes! I love a good subject matter expert and by the time they're done talking, indirectly bottles are sold! Good bottles. Although they focus primarily on South American wines, they actually carry wine from other regions as well. The best thing with Grand Cata, get on their mailing list, because they have wine tastings, art exhibition and tastings, and it's really casual. The parking isn't bad, because the location is right on the edge of 7th street. I picked up a really good bottle of red (Italian) that I sampled one day, prices aren't too bad. It' not just wine they also carry cheese, crackers, and imported beer. The décor is really nice. A friend surprised me and kind of made this into our date night when they had an art exhibition a few months back. Check it out, its new, fresh, and pleasant to the palette.

Yelp
Grand Cata is an amazing little wine shop. I am so grateful I stumbled upon it! They have a wide range of South American wines, some I had not seen since my travels throughout Latin America! The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and passionate about wine. I cannot wait to go back!

Yelp
Amazing little wine shop with impeccable service. No matter what you're in the mood for, the lovely, warm people who run this shop will help you find it. They offer education, tastings, and really take their time to walk you through the process of finding the perfect wine for any occasion. We're members of their monthly wine club which, for $40 per month, gets you two bottles of wine with impressively thorough pairing suggestions and a little gift to go with. You can pick-up during their tasting party, or anytime that works for you throughout the month. It's fantastic and a total bargain. We've never had a wine we didn't enjoy, and have added several to our list of favorites. In addition to their impressive selection of wines, they have unique liquors and fun Spanish-style snacks, kitchen/wine accoutrement, and a curated selection of on-theme books. The shop is gorgeous--clean, light-filled, and very well organized. I cannot say enough good things about the people who work here. They're so friendly and helpful and never, ever make you feel rushed... or uneducated about wine. In fact, I always feel they're totally delighted when you ask questions and need their assistance. They clearly have a passion for the wines they sell and the knowledge to go with it. We make the trip from Takoma Park to frequent Gran Cata, as there's really no other shop like it in DC. They're totally wonderful, and if you like wine, you'll love them!

Yelp
Tastings: They have tastings Monday-Friday 5-8pm and Saturday-Sunday 3-5pm. Their website also has a calendar that you can browse to see upcoming events. Stopped by on a Thursday evening and had an opportunity to try 4 wines: Cava, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. The story behind each wine was really thorough and interesting without feeling overwhelmed. They only do tastings so you can't buy a glass or bottle and drink it there unfortunately. The store is broken up into new world versus old world which I really enjoyed. They also have liquor and beer available for purchase. Wine Classes on Demand: You can reserve their communal table with a minimum of 6 guests for $25 per person which includes 5 wines plus a surprise taster. After the class you can get 10% off all wine purchases.

Yelp
Well I never thought I'd be writing a review about a wine shop before but here I am! What an awesome experience I had here looking for a good natural wine (I've been curious about the sulfite free wine for some time now and heard that natural wines can be more tart/have kombucha like characterizes.. also could potentially lull wine hangovers?). Edwin immediately started explaining the store to me, asked what I wanted/liked to drink, and then started giving me some bottles to consider. There was a great selection of wine and they aren't TJ priced but that's fine with me when someone is there to point you in the right direction. Afterwards he gave a couple of the daily wine tastings. I will be coming back for sure. I was impressed with wine selection and I'm not sure if it was placebo effect but the natural red wine didn't give me a hangover. W!

Yelp
I am so grateful to have this shop in my neighborhood. On first glance from the outside, I assumed it was too pricey for my somewhat modest budget. But I was totally wrong. The shop is warm and welcoming, there is something at every price point, and most importantly- the staff is phenomenal. They're knowledgeable, friendly, and not at all pushy or overbearing while you're shopping. Plus, they always have multiple bottles of the same wine in the fridge- when I was last there, I got 3 bottles of my favorite champagne (which is only $17) all cold. With the grocery store right down the street, it's easy to pick convenience over supporting local. Don't. Stop into Grand Cata and ensure amazing local spots like this survive- especially now!!

Yelp
The people at Grand Cata could not be more helpful or friendly! They are knowledgeable and approachable with any questions about wine. Throughout the pandemic they've had really great COVID safety procedures which I appreciate. Love shopping here!

Yelp
Stop in here. You won't be disappointed. I love coming in and browsing the selection. Whatever they're paying the staff -- it's not enough. Clearly everyone who works here loves their job. Everyone I've talked to has gone out of their way to be friendly, enthusiastic, share their knowledge and love for the products in the store. The staff is knowledgeable and glad to answer any questions. Usually liquor and wine stores are dreary places with bored employees checking their phones and seem irritated you've interrupted them. Not here. It feels more like you've walked into their personal collection and they're eager just to share it with you. Check it out!

Yelp
Places like Grand Cata are what make this such a great time to be living in DC. Made the mistake of passing by this place numerous times because I thought they only sold wine. Luckily, when looking for some tequila, I decided to stumble in here and was pleasantly surprised! Really nice selection of Latino wines, tequilas, mescals, and liqueurs, beers, and more. Staff is super friendly and knowledgeable about all of their products, even suggesting pairings and recipes. Very reasonably priced, as well. Just took a look at their calendar and it seems they have some nice events. Looking forward to the tamale tasting!

Matt K.

Yelp
These guys are the best. Always feels like they're happy to welcome you into the shop and they're super diligent w COVID safety measures. They've never given me a bad recommendation, whether that's wine or their collection of interesting spirits. Great mezcals.
google avatar

Roopa D.

Yelp
This is a neighborhood gem. Walking in I knew this is much more than a wine shop, it is a glimpse into Latin America. The service is personalized, memorable. The wine collection is impressive for every palate and price range. They get the art of wine. The store is decorated with local delicacies giving a flare of a journey into Latin America. let's just say I didn't want to leave and could've spent hours exploring & tasting.

Yelp
Thank you Pedro!!! You were so nice and professional today and helped me order an amazing birthday basket of wines for my sisters birthday in the midst of a pandemic!! We will be sure to come back again!

Sibel S.

Yelp
Grand Cata's customer service is unmatched!! I can't say enough good things about this Latin American wine shop. I ordered over the phone for curbside pick-up. The transaction was seamless - Julio recommended several bottles based on my price point. If you're looking for a celebratory sparkling - pick up the Cava Geisse Terroir Brut Rose from Brazil... it was a hit! Fast forward two weeks: my brother ordered a few bottles as a gift. Everyone he spoke with was super friendly and helpful. Julio even made the delivery himself to ensure it would arrive on my birthday! Check them out! You won't be disappointed.

Camila R.

Yelp
My partner and I walked into Grand Cata today for the first time to pick up some wine and I cannot recommend the store enough. The wines, spirits, and the bites were thoughtfully curated and everyone in the store was knowledgeable and very kind! Will definitely be coming back again.
google avatar

Akeem B.

Yelp
Great wine selection & good prices. Both local & specifically Latin American beers. I was very surprised to find an excellent mezcal selection as well. Great looking place, plenty of snacks and other knickknacks to go along with the wines. Staff is very knowledgeable and more than willing to help guide you to what you were looking for, or even something new if you're feeling adventurous. I highly recommend stoping by and checking it out.
google avatar

Yelp
Great selection of wines and spirits with a focus on Latin America. Can be a bit difficult to navigate without the help of the staff, luckily they are very friendly and helpful in pointing you in the right direction. Just make sure you give them a price range, as it's always tough to suggest without any frame of reference! Heard good things about their wine club as well, although I haven't participated. Very dog friendly and a fun place to also try out whatever they have open at the time!
google avatar

Bailey B.

Yelp
Remarkable customer service from Julio! Staff is very knowledgeable & the wide selection is friendly to all budgets. I will absolutely be back.

Yelp
Cool new Latino wine store that just opened March 2016. Beautiful interior and great selection of South American wines!
google avatar

Daniel S.

Yelp
Excellent selection off unique wine and spirits. Fantastic ambience and very knowledgeable staff (owners). It was my first visit today and I was impressed. Thank you and welcome to 7th Street.
google avatar

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. They have the friendliest employees that always have a bottle of wine (or two or three) open for tasting. They are super helpful and ask lots of questions to point you towards something that you will love! They also have a lot of affordable options so you can try new things without breaking the bank.

Nora L.

Yelp
Love, love, love this wine/spirits shop! It's my favorite in the city for a few reasons: 1. They have very interesting choices of wine -- other shops have mostly the same options over and over again 2. They have a really nice range in prices 3. It has by far the biggest selection of natural wines that I've seen in DC (most of the wine shops I called/checked out did not sell any natural wine) 4. The customer service is EXCELLENT! The owner is often in the shop and is so friendly and passionate about what he does
google avatar

Megan L.

Yelp
Beautiful new Latin-inspired wine store in Shaw, featuring some of my favorite wines from when I lived abroad that I haven't found anywhere else! Popped in on a whim here and fell in love with the hospitality of Julio, the staff and the space. I was warmly greeted by all staff members, shown where to find pricing information, and given a general run down of the wine offerings before being invited to the 2pm tasting taking place. Julio gave four customers a great breakdown of a white and a red wine being featured that day. He also generously offered to order my favorite wine from Argentina through his vendor, even allowing me to purchase 3 bottles instead of the usual six. I can't wait until it arrives! The space is beautiful - wide open with the focus on the wine shelves. Prices are written on the backs of the bottles, DIY wine cork cards depict the country of origin of the wines and the sleek center counter gives off a sophisticated vibe. Highly recommend if you're looking to break outside the grocery store wine market, and find some more unique, flavorful wines from Latin America, Spain, Italy, etc.

Yelp
Hands down my favorite place to buy wine in DC. The owners know their stuff, they love their wine, and they are happy to help you find something you'll love. I'm an appreciator of wine, but not super knowledgeable, and they are always enthusiastic to show me something new and to work within my price range. I honestly can't recommend this place enough.
google avatar

N C.

Yelp
What a great find! Was there for a tasting and enjoyed the knowledgeable staff and amazing selection of interesting wines. There's a good selection under 20 bucks too.
google avatar

Gary W.

Yelp
This wine shop is exceptional. The owners were present and very helpful in describing their wine shop and what they offer. We had a conversation about how I fell in love with Bolivian wine when I was living there, and was shocked that they carried it! I will definitely be returning. It was also noted that they were tasting a sparkling wine and a Tannat from Brazil!
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Wonderful addition to the wine scene in DC! The store has a great selection of old world and new world Latin/Spanish wines. The staff is friendly and eager to help you find a great wine selection. I showed someone a photo - just a photo- of a wine I had tried (and loved) in Granada, Spain. He was quick to identify the wine and guide me to multiple options that would be similar to the local wine I enjoyed at a small tapas bar in Albayzin. The wines were delicious and spot on to what I remembered. Even better - under $20 a bottle! Perfect way to start the evening. They also have wine tastings on the weekend. The wines were all delicious - two reds and one white. You get a 10% discount on the tasting wines, so a few bottles of a pinot noir came home with me as well. Overall, I can't wait to go back and try more vino tinto and vino rosado.
google avatar

Kelsey S.

Yelp
This place is great-- we're so lucky to have such a nice wine shop in our neighborhood. Julio and Pedro, the owners, are always so welcoming and thoughtful with their recommendations. Picking up our wine club bottles is the highlight of my month.

M H.

Yelp
One of the best wine shops in D.C. Great owners, unique selection, fun staff all make this a perfect place to stop in for a bottle of wine or spirits. We lived nearby for years and miss this place.
google avatar

Theresa W.

Yelp
Beautiful, spacious store with the nicest owners and staff! Everyone was really knowledgeable and passionate about wines. A great place to go if you're indecisive and need some personalized suggestions. In addition to a great variety of wines with a focus in Latin American wines, they have interesting liquors and beers, too. Don't miss their sherries! They also have all kinds of fancy wine and cheese serving ware, glasses, snacks, and fancy meats and cheeses. Right now they have a gorgeous display of roses that makes me tempted to get one of each.
google avatar

Caitlin O.

Yelp
I had been eagerly awaiting this place to open. The owners did a fantastic job with the space, truly top notch design and materials. I die for the tile work! We stopped in with our pup Friday night, and all the staff was so friendly. They have a huge selection of Latin American and Spanish wine and snacks, as well as some beer in the cooler in the back. Best of luck to these guys and Ill be sure to stop in whenever I'm in the need for some delicious Latino/Spanish wines!
google avatar

Erin M.

Yelp
Pedro and Julio at Grand Cata hosted yet another fantastic event for me. The wine tasting was perfect and my guests loved the store, the staff, and, of course the wonderful wine. I think everyone left having purchased a few bottles post-tasting! Thank YOU for such an awesome event, Julio and Pedro! I can't recommend Grand Cata more!
google avatar

Yelp
Beautifully designed space, excellent wine selection, and a cool Latin vibe . This place has opened my eyes to *affordable* great tasting wine! I'm never overpaying for average wine again.

Yelp
I love this wine shop - it has a great atmosphere and wide selection of wine that is very reasonably priced! The owners are very knowledgeable with great recommendations. Highly recommend stopping in!

Yelp
We just stumbled in here while walking home from somewhere else, but ended up having a delicious, free wine tasting. The staff here was very friendly and very knowledgeable about the wines. Great find!
