"The five-story, turreted Grand Hotel Amrâth occupies the former joint headquarters of a number of Dutch shipping companies and is the first example of the Amsterdam School architecture style, a zany Dutch take on Art Nouveau. It bristles with original features: stone-carved marine creatures, ornate ironmongery, a marble staircase topped by a high stained-glass ceiling. The rooms come with fabrics in carefully researched period designs and are spacious, with large bathrooms. There’s a good spa with a pool (equipped with a jet stream), an Amsterdam School-style cafe and a reasonably priced restaurant." - Amber Port

We have just stayed here for four nights. We loved it. All the staff are so helpful, polite, attentive. Nothing was too much trouble. The room was beautiful, a deluxe room and well worth it. Lovely complimentary toiletries which were good quality. Free mini bar restocked every day with good selection. Breakfast is expensive at €29pp daily but the range and quality is excellent. Spa area is really lovely, we enjoyed using it. Thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam is a stunning hotel with unique, spacious rooms and an incredible historic style. The service is top-notch, and the breakfast selection is excellent. A truly special stay! One tip: avoid using the bath jacuzzi—it’s not the best.

We had an incredible experience at Grand Hotel Amrâth Amsterdam! From the moment we walked in, the staff was welcoming, attentive, and made us feel right at home. The hotel itself is stunning, with its historic architecture and luxurious ambiance creating a truly unique stay.||Our room was spacious, clean, and beautifully decorated with all the amenities we could ask for. The spa facilities were the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring the city. The location is fantastic, within walking distance to many attractions and restaurants.||A special thank you to Casper, who went above and beyond to help us book tickets to the Anne Frank House, ensuring we didn’t miss out on such an important experience. It made our trip even more memorable!||We can’t recommend this hotel enough and will definitely be returning on our next visit to Amsterdam. Thank you for a wonderful stay!||🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

********Attention********** We was robbed by the Hotel Staff! It had to be hotel staff because no one else had access to the room. Beware and Stay Away from this hotel. During our stay, the managers were H. A. and M.G. I have to say that these are the most unprofessional hotel managers you can possibly run into. They did not help the situation and Mr. H. A. made threats to put us on a blacklist and called us liars. We had 2 laptops and other belongings stolen from our room, when in fact the room door and windows were closed. We quickly called the staff and reported what took place. We could not make the police report that evening because they informed us to come in the morning, when we went to the police station the wait during that time was almost 3-4 hours. This was our first Europe vacation, and we were not going to spend almost half the day at the police station. When we approached the manager Hisham and explained the situation he made us feel like we were lying. After almost a day, a complete stranger from a different hotel contacted us since we had our info on our belongings and informed us that they found those items in a different hotel. We went to that hotel and picked up the items that were stolen, they were all in the main area of that hotel. We became aware that the housekeepers are temporary workers and are working at different hotels on a rotation. This was not our only issue, we had other issues with the room that we originally booked. The first room we were given had a problem with the shower door. I crushed my fingers while opening and closing the door. This was a safety hazard. We promptly reported the problem to the hotel staff, and they switched our room to a larger one however it had the same issue with the dangerous shower doors that can crush your fingers. We agreed to stay in the room since we didn’t have any other options considering it was a busy weekend in Amsterdam. After our experience we definitely will not stay at this hotel, if we return to Amsterdam we will choose a different hotel.

My partner and I stayed here for several nights and we had no complaints. The location couldn’t be more convenient. Our room was clean. Luggage storage was nice when we arrived much earlier than check in. The only downside was that our room wasn’t actually ready at the time of check in but they provided us with complimentary drinks in the restaurant while we waited for ~30 minutes

We stayed here for two nights. Location: close to Amsterdam centraal but a decent walk to most attractions… it’s alright but I wouldn’t say excellent Service: hit and miss but mostly good. The staff here do try their best and are mostly friendly. A special shoutout to the restaurant/bar staff.. the gentleman serving us both nights was amazing, kind, prompt and overall provided the best service at the hotel. The housekeeping staff was also excellent. Rooms: we had a junior suite and let’s just say it might be time for a little refresh. The rooms are not 5 star… while the hotel pays tribute to its past.. and that’s great.. the showers are leaky, tub doesn’t drain well, the couch has scuffs and marks and the furniture is full of scratches. The beds are not comfortable at all. This hotel was opened in 2007 and it shows. The biggest problem I have with this hotel is on arrival we were offered a crib.. we accepted and went about our business. On our return at night, we noticed that there was still no crib so we called down. A couple of hours later we were given a broken crib that collapsed on my daughter. Extremely dangerous to say the least. They should throw that crib out. After we did speak to staff they did bring us a proper one. Why not do that initially? This is where the service does not reflect 5 stars. The amenities here are great and I think it’s this logic that makes this a 5 star. Overall decent hotel but not 5 stars.

Really good service. Nice, classic old hotel. Great value. Good breakfast buffet. Quiet, classical room with high ceilings and a view of the canal. Convenient location. Works for both leisure and business travel. Particularly good value and I would there stay again.

We stayed for three nights, b&b, at the end of November.|If you like Disney’s Tower of Terror ambience and decor, you’ll love this place. Not that it is terror, on the contrary. The decor is excellent and really makes you feel like it’s a classic 1910’s hotel (even though it actually only became a hotel in C21. |The hotel is very clean and well presented.|The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful.|The bed and pillows were super comfy.|The breakfast is excellent, as is the team in the restaurant.||We would stay here again.

Yelp
The hotel is definitely haunted, i stayed for two nights, the first night the Tv went off on its own and i did not care much i thought there was a timer for it. Second night i was sitting in room, the curtains closed on their own and i freaked out. I asked my friends they told me sometimes some lights would go on or off in their room, my friend said her suitcase fell to the floor from the suitcase stand, and also she went to the jacuzi and was all alone down there, the jacuzi started the bubble system on its own, so she freaked out and left the basement.

Yelp
The staff at the Amrath Hotel are the kindest of any hotel I've ever stayed in. I am a three time open heart surgery survivor who came in from a horrific experience at the Barcelona airport. I was ill and arrived at around noon, well before the check-in time. From the moment we walked in, we could feel the warmth of the staff, even of the other guests. I was offered seating, refreshments, fresh air by several employees. There is a very warm, comfortable climate here. They worked with my husband to get us into a room asap even though we were early. In the shape I was in, these people were angels, especially compared to all we encountered at the Barcelona airport. The room was large and luxurious with an extremely comfortable bed, and an epic bathtub. You have robes, slippers, and all the toiletries you might need. Mineral water is complimentary and provided daily. The location is fabulous, across the street from Central Station. You cannot go wrong with the Amrath!!!

Yelp
May 2024 I loved my stay at the hotel, I would like to highlight the cleaning team who, in addition to being friendly, do an excellent job, congratulations. Neusa Portugal

Yelp
Found this hotel to be very dark and dirty. The staff are wonderful, but this hotel yes it is old but it could use some work and cleaning. I had cob webs in my room on the windows. The bathroom counter had permeant stains on it and water leaked from the sink onto the floor. And it is haunted!

Yelp
Our four nights stay at the Grand Amrath was quite glorious. First of all, the amazing location is definitely a convenience and a huge plus. A short walk from the central Amsterdam train station, trolley stops, NEMO, the Maritime Museum, canals, restaurants, and most attractions. The port-waterway-sea is right across the main thorough-fare (Prins Hendrikkade). The building initially housed shipping companies and is over a century old (1913). There's definitely a nautical theme throughout the building. The structure is quite grand and unique with old world décor. The early elevators/lifts are powered on for display. The hotel provides a bit of historical perspective of the international and cosmopolitan seaport city that is Amsterdam. Our superior deluxe room was elegant with rich deep reds and orange hues. The room had extremely tall floor to ceiling space. This gave the room a grand posture, and it appeared a lot larger and roomy. The tall and wide windows provided us a beautiful view of the city and port. The bed was very spacious and comfy. The pillows, blankets and comforters are all plush and soft. The bathroom space was perfect. We also liked the soaps, hair notions, and lotions. However, the pexi-glass shower door unfolded when used, and folded away when done showering. The shower was a little bit odd. There is ample closet and drawer space. ***One of the best perks about the room was the complimentary mini-bar. Beers, wines, bottled water, juices, and sodas each day- replenished. We took advantage of the mini-bar daily. Unfortunately, we had a slight problem with housekeeping services. Our first two nights, the room was not serviced until after 4:30pm. We did notice that the hotel was full. During our stay, we intentionally stayed out for most of the morning and afternoon so that we could return to a fully serviced room. One late afternoon, we were so exhausted due to our long trans-Atlantic flight, we had to retire to bed early. We couldn't wait any longer for housekeeping to service our room. I called for fresh towels and notions. Due to the housekeeping issue that we encountered, I could not give this hotel a five star rating. The bar lounge is a relaxing place to enjoy a drink, snack or meal. One afternoon, I ordered the grilled cheese sandwich for lunch. Extremely yummy. Other than the housekeeping issue, the rest of the staff (front desk, restaurant servers, bellmen, and front desk) is efficient and customer service oriented. Roos, at the front desk, was especially helpful and friendly. Also, the two housekeeping staff members who provided us with fresh towels after hearing about our service issues, were super helpful. I was remiss as I forgot to ask for their names. They both (male & female) are Spanish speakers and conversed in English. Our stay was very pleasant. I definitely would stay here again.

Yelp
The Grand Hotel Amrath was the first hotel we stayed at on our honeymoon and boy did it set the bar for the rest of our trip! It seemed like the rooms got smaller the further south we travelled, but at this hotel you can expect big, spacious, comfy quarters unlike other establishments you would typically find throughout Europe. I took a risk, but scored an AMAZING deal online for our stay here. It was conveniently located within walking distance to Centraal Station (less than 5 minute walk) which worked out perfectly for what we wanted to do while in Amsterdam (day trip to Zaanse Schans, Amsterdam Arena for Ajax vs. FC Barcelona, & early morning train to Brussels). It's perfect if you're using the metro, bus, or tram to travel throughout the city -- you'll find all the connections at Centraal Station. We got to the hotel way before our check-in time, but they happily held our luggage for us as we toured the city. I also had a pair of tickets for a soccer game sent to the hotel and they held it for me until we arrived. How's that for service? Everyone was seriously so friendly and helpful and checking-in (& out) was a breeze! As you walk through the hotel you'll notice it has maintained quite a bit of Art Deco charm throughout the building. You may find yourself spending a lot of time admiring all the architecture around here and they do offer a guided tour if it piques your interest. Also note, it is an older building so the layout of the hotel isn't quite standard. It's more like a maze of sorts and it took us a few tries to find our way, but it kind of amused us. Our room was huge by European standards and the ceilings were so high. The bathroom was lovely as well. We also had a small fridge to keep some snacks and I'm not sure if they still do it -- but when we stayed here, all the drinks, including the alcohol were complimentary. I definitely took a few bottles of alcohol for the road ;) There's also conference/banquet rooms, a restaurant, a bar/lounge, and a Spa & Wellness centre. We didn't get to take advantage of any of these, but I'm pretty impressed that they have a heated pool, whirlpool, saunas, etc. which is also complimentary for guests. It's been a few years, but I got all nostalgic and finally took the time to write about our little trip here. So do keep that in mind ;)

Yelp
The most terrible experience we ever had in a hotel I'm giving one star because there isn't a Zero available. We had the most disappointing experience with a very rude member of the staff, who treated us with zero respect, to the point we had to check out. My husband booked the trip and the hotel as a surprise for my birthday, so it had a special meaning and therefore high expectations for us to end up like that. We travel quite often and have never seen such a treatment. We had to leave the hotel late in the evening before our plans as we couldn't cope with such a situation. The way the lady dealt with the situation only demonstrates she has zero customer experience and service principles. If you are looking for a decent and respectful service, choose something else. ( for 5-starts experience, it's so faraway that's not even worthwhile to include in the list)

Yelp
When I first saw this hotel , I mean also the first contact with the first staff representative, my thoughts and impressions wasn't very good I have to admit! But then I got back at the good time for check in (2pm) and everything changed, I definitely felt I was in the good place to spend my week end Holliday's in Amsterdam ! Smiling staff (Didi and her colleague at this time) and amazing assistance to help you in any needs! I've asked for the star (I really did ) and Alison for some angels flying over my head! They couldn't find these not easy demands! But they brought me over the edge of my expectations! This Hotel Is full of charm, if you're looking for a iRoom or something like, please try it before say anything about, what makes this hotel is definitely the staff , helpful and kind, and the charm of each peace of wood and part of the walls! Great hotel perfect location Thanks guys (didi and staff) keep working together, together you're stronger

Yelp
Wow where to begin. When we arrived there was no one at concierge or reception at 2pm. We were in a spa suite with a sauna, excited for the extra space and the king bed. When we got to the room we were lacking towels/robes and had the wonderful 1950's married couple style of two twin beds pushed together. Two twin blankets. Twin sheets. And a big ole gap between each bed that grew bigger with every shift. Aside from the tv not working, the phone being broken, and having two days of no turndown service (even with requesting it) that wasn't even the part that sent us over the edge. We had a horrible experience with an employee who had put alcohol accidentally in our morning coffee. Totally fine, things happen. We explained we were sober and would like to get new drinks. Her response and engagement with my partner was rude and aghast, implying it was our fault and being exasperated she had to redo. She was so aggressive and rude we took it up with management. The next day? THE WOMAN CONFRONTED US ABOUT US COMPLAINING TO MANAGEMENT IN THE HALLWAY. It was wild! I have never in my life experienced such low quality service, let alone at what's supposed to be a five star hotel. Management told us they would be figuring out a way to compensate us for the abhorrent stay we had when we checked out. We were told we would get a call that afternoon to confirm us being refunded our room service bill and how they would process a discount on the room. We haven't gotten any call or refunds. We have however gotten a bill for 5.60€ for a water they forgot to put on room service. Absolutely maddening. Stay literally anywhere else.

Moien A.

Yelp
A very expensive stay with the very least you get. The room had no ventilation of any kind, it was so warm I couldn't sleep at all. When we told them, the response was the air is filtered. Absolute waste of money, don't recommend. Hotel staff where professional, but hotel cleaning staff where very loud, they came in the room while we where still inside, didn't pay attention to hear if any one is in. Also there was a constant weird smell in their lobby and at the door, some renovations were going on.

Deanna F.

Yelp
This is a majestic old shipping building huge brick presents occupying the entire block. When you walk into the lobby it's all marble grand stairway beautiful vases of flowers at two in the lobby. Walk through the revolving door and get the full feeling of walking way back into time. The front staff is extremely helpful and very understanding . This is truly old Europe there is no central air conditioning the air is filtered. So when you visit and it's hot in Amsterdam ask for two fans for your very tall ceiling room. The lobby offers a cold drink huge dispenser of blood orange juice and cucumber water. Newspapers all around as well for your pleasure and reading. Sitting in the lobby enjoy the ambience as well have an ice cream cone. Summon someone from the bar area and they will scoop you a fresh delicious and very creamy ice cream cone while you sit and enjoy this beautiful old building. Our room was on the fourth floor now again there are no windows that will open except one Trans Am on the very top. Always ask for fans. Housekeeping is why this hotel loses one star unfortunately. Housekeeping never vacuum the room that we stayed in for the entire week. I was in the room when the housekeeping girl came in to wash the used coffee cups in the sink. On the other hand the mini bar is stocked every day at 10 AM wine beer apple juice Coca-Cola. No extra charge for this service all part of your room expense. The lobby downstairs is beautiful as well as comfortable I would sit in the four chairs that's in the lobby while waiting for my family enjoying a beautiful breeze watching all the people come up and down the stone stairs that have a beautiful red carpet rolled out for you to enter. The restaurant offers a full American breakfast or a French breakfast which is continental. The location is fabulous across from the port of Amsterdam as well as across from Amsterdam Central Station two blocks from the red light district and of course only a few blocks away from fantastic coffee shops.

Yelp
FREE fully stocked minibar!!! The Grand Hotel Amrath in Amsterdam is absolutely awesome! This historic five star hotel is so gorgeous and includes so many complimentary luxuries: *Free Wireless Internet *Free entrance to the Spa & Wellness *Nespresso coffee machine *Free Minibar - Yes, a FREE minibar stocked with liquor, wine, beer, soda, water, juice and snacks. The minibar is restocked every day! This central location is convenient to so many museums, restaurants, bars, and coffee shops in Amsterdam. We were able to walk from the train station to our hotel in less than ten minutes and we were stumbling distance from the Red Light District and nightlife. Although this hotel was originally a shipping house built in 1916 all of the modern conveniences have been added to the Grand Hotel Amrath during it's renovation in 2005. Our hotel room was large and spacious and included a large desk and armoires, sitting area, plush towels and bathrobes, luxury toiletries and a flat screen TV. The hot tub and steam room were the perfect spot to relax after a long day of walking and the free beverages were such a nice touch. Usually I do not dine in hotels because I prefer to eat with the locals, but we did make an exception and had breakfast one morning. The French Breakfast seemed a little high at €13,50, but it was absolutely delicious and included a generous portion of eggs, a baguette with ham or cheese, a croissant or chocolatine, orange juice and coffee. We also stopped by the bar one night for drinks and the bartender was so friendly.

Eric M.

Yelp
This was a fantastic hotel to stay at! I am an American in Amsterdam for the first time. The view outside our window was a picturesque view of a canal with typical beautiful old Dutch architecture on the other side of the canal. Another canal is on the opposite side of the hotel. The room was luxurious, reminiscent maybe of the 1913 style when the hotel was built, and I was told it was the first electrified building in Amsterdam. (But don't worry; the electricity, plumbing and heating are of course modern!) And then, when we asked if we could visit the tower at the top of the building, a staff member volunteered a personal tour of the tower and roof, when the reception desk became a little less busy!

Yelp
This is one of my favorite hotels I've ever used. Visually, it's a feast, everywhere. If you want to impress an architect, historian, preservationist or artist in your life, this is the place you HAVE to book. It's quite an easy walk from the Amsterdam Central Station, which means you are close to the trams and trains, as well as water. The room was huge, but dark. Nice bathroom with double sink and good water pressure in the shower. They also have a nice spa in the basement, reasonably priced. We loved the place so much we bought the book they produced on the building, which is the quintessential best example of Amsterdam School (Dutch version of Art Nouveau period). It's decadent, beautiful and a gem of the city. I can't think of another building I've ever seen that is this complete in its stunning details. The first thing I can compare it to is Hearst Castle, because it's another place where no expense was spared, and the top of the line artisans executed every little detail of this place. From the outside or inside, this is a beauty. So glad it was repurposed from shipping offices to a hotel. The transition works really well

Yelp
Fantastic hotel in Amsterdam. The staff is friendly and willing to serve, they helped with a late check-out. Helped with keeping my bags after I checked out and wanted to explore the city more and generally there to serve. Location is excellent, within walking distance to Central Station, the Red Light District and many sites and attractions. As Amsterdam is very walk able, this central location made it easy to get around the city. My room was the Superior Room and was huge, huge floor to ceiling windows with automatic black out curtains, large and comfortable king sized bed with free mini bar with a beer and wine that is refilled daily. The bathroom was huge with a shower and separate full time idea for soaking. Great hotel, and worth a stay, only issue is the hotel is huge and is a bit like a maze when trying to originally find your room. The staff will help you with this though.

Emma B.

Yelp
The hotel was fantastic! The second we stepped through the door we felt welcome. We were seen to right away and everyone was very helpful and always smiling!!! Our room was lovely and spacious, extremely clean and although we did not get an amazing view, it was lovely to open the curtains for the big windows to let in natural light in the mornings. The room was cleaned and the mini bar was refilled every day, giving us fresh bed sheets and towels for when we got back each evening. Also a nespresso machine! Which is perfect for those of you (who like me; cannot function without coffee in the mornings) also an example of how helpful the staff are: we had already checked out when we got half way down the street and realised we had left our passports in the room and the guy on the door was more than willing to get us back into the room for them:) I have only one downfall of this hotel...we were not prewarned that we would need to pay €75 euro garuntee for each night we were staying which set us back €225 before we had even gotten to the room. Good job we had saved enough to last us the whole holiday because as students this would have been a major setback had we nit prepared for emergencies.

J C.

Yelp
Unfortunately i booked this hotel based upon the ratings. I received a very subpar experience. For 200 euro+ per night i was told my room would be ready in "15 minutes" mind you i flew from LA. Been up for 30 hours. I was then sitting in the lobby waiting 15 minutes. 15 goes by and i walk back up for the room she says "my apologies they said 50 minutes".... so i walk back over to my seat... wait 50 minutes, meanwhile the staff gives 4 walk in guests fresh rooms no reservations nothing... I pre booked online and paid in full. Unfortunate. I expected a lot more... Even Motel 6 in the US which is 30.00 a night has a room ready for you when they say they do. I also had to come up and inquire about my room over and over instead of them servicing me i had to "push them" this is a concept that shows bad front desk service. Lack if keeping a customer updated and creating workarounds. I found the hospitality to he subpar a

Yelp
Grand Amrath Hotel was a treat for me for my 21st birthday. I booked through Top Secret Hotels so initially didn't know I was booking here but so glad I chose to go for it! The hotel is so lovely and so are the staff. You don't need to dress in designer clothing to be treated properly; I rocked up in no makeup, a baggy jacket and leggings and got treated like a Queen. Our room was very comfortable and modern looking but also had character that new hotels lack. We had a huge bed, an LCD TV, nespresso machine, hairdryer, trouser press and safe. There was also a complimentary mini bar that gets restocked every day - usually you have to pay a fortune for a tiny bottle in most hotels. Our bathroom had two sinks, a shower and a bath that was so deep that bubble baths were very relaxing in it. There's a Health and Wellbeing suite in the hotel that was never that busy which I liked as I could relax in peace. There was a swimming pool with what looked like lights on the ceiling which were really pretty. I loved the jacuzzi and was brave enough to go into the hot sauna. The hotel also has a gym but I had ate way too many pancakes and couldn't muster the energy to workout. When you're inside the hotel, it's important to look up as there's a beauty of a ceiling that you won't want to miss. The location of the hotel is excellent. It's only a couple of minutes from Amsterdam train station and it's close to a few little newsagent and souvenir shops. Hopefully I'll be able to come back here again, the views from our room were beautiful!

Yelp
After staying in hostels, budget inns, and camping during our entire Europe trip, we decided to book a 5 star surprise hotel through Hotwire to end the trip. We were so happy we did. ROOM: Though smaller than US hotel rooms, the Amrath had its own character and enough room for two of us. The bed was comfy. The room boasted a bed, table, LCD tv, and armoire. The roomy bathroom had separate shower and tubs as well as a double sink. LOCATION: Located in the Centrum area about a 5 minute walk from the train station Approximately a 20-25 minute train ride to the airport which costed about 5€ Within a 25-30 minute walking distance from the Red Light District, Heineken Experience, many beautiful canals WHAT TO KNOW: *There is a city tax that they charge you upon checkout. We weren't informed checking in. Yelp
So I booked this hotel for my vacation to Amsterdam expecting a great experience. What I got was a room in an annexed section that the hotel bought that overlooked an ALLEY! I made a complaint and was contacted by staff asking if I would like to change rooms so I was happy that they wanted to assist. What they did was try to put me in a part of the hotel that had some sort of construction going on! Again very uncool so I decided to stay where I was at as both options were not good. For the amount that I paid I expected a better experience especially if you are only posting the original hotel pictures and not the annexed part. Definitely would not return to this hotel... its unfortunate as the hotel does look beautiful but I was not able to enjoy that as I was placed in an area that looked like a comfort inn...

Yelp
Not sure where to begin with this review. We booked this hotel for our honeymoon based on the "luxury" amenities that it offers. It labels itself as a "5-star" hotel but that could not be further from the truth. This hotel is odd - and not in a good way; more like a Beetlejuice kind of way. It is creepy and not very welcoming at all. The layout of the hotel is frustrating and feels like a maze. The interior design of the hotel is dated and worn. The elevator is painfully slow. I can go on and on... The check-in was quick and they allowed us to go to our room early. Very nice. Wi-Fi worked perfectly the entire stay. The room was small but it did have a beautiful canal/city view and minimal street noise up on the 4th floor. It was fine until we checked the mini-bar and found it to be almost completely empty. After about 45 minutes, someone came up to fill it. No problem. We stayed here for 5 nights and found no real problems other than that. That is until I used the shower and found that the glass door did not close all the way. This led to massive puddles of water all over the bathroom floor. Keep in mind that this is a "5-star" hotel. Whatever. On the final night of our stay, we arrived back to our room after a day of sightseeing to find all of our dishes, cups and glasses that we used for coffee, water, soda, etc., left in the bathroom sink which was filled with disgusting filthy brown water. (See photos.) Absolutely disgusting. Are you meaning to tell me that housekeeping can't be bothered to give their guests CLEAN cups and glasses? They just rinse them in the bathroom sink with filthy water? Totally ridiculous. It makes you wonder what else this hotel does that would horrify its guests if they found out. After complaining downstairs, we were upgraded to a much nicer suite, however, there was one problem - the room was located on the second floor and the street/bike/pedestrian noise kept us up all night. It felt like we were sleeping right outside. This was the absolute worst hotel experience I've ever had. Totally absurd. Also, people are raving about the location of this hotel. The location of this hotel is only convenient if you are taking the train from the airport to Central Station. Otherwise, many of the shops, nice neighborhoods, and museums are at least a 15 minute walk away.

Yelp
This hotel was funky but fun to stay at. The place is huge, so it was a maze to find the lifts as well as the business center. It also has this odd "ghost town" reception lobby on our floor. I believe it was an old shipping center. We had a gigantic suite that was bigger than our house and would have cost a fortune back home. There was an oddly modern bathroom with all glass doors and an awesome soaking tub. The amenities here are pretty great--a spa wellness center that looked nice but we didn't have time to enjoy and a complimentary mini bar restocked daily with snacks, drinks, beer, and alcohol. They provide nice soaps, a sewing kit, and other little bathroom goodies. Our room had spectacular views of the canals and the harbor and was filled with huge windows. The location was PERFECT. 5 minutes walk to Central Station, 10 min to Red Light District and about 30ish minutes to Museumplein. We were able to walk many places from the hotel, yet at night it was quiet enough. We had a few minor complaints like how dated the furniture and decor inside are. I love the history but the rooms and hallways smelled like an old musty library and the marble flooring throughout had a mosoleum-esque feel. The other bummer was the beautiful king sized bed was only comfortable with the bedspread on. The service staff were super friendly and sweet, but housekeeper was inconsistent with restocking things and the "24-hour" room service had odd breaks in service. If the price could come down a bit, we would have probably overlooked those. That said, we still enjoyed our stay. If they update it some it could be a real gem!

Yelp
First off, I really want 4.75 stars because my last room there was stuffy. But a fan was brought to my room in less than 15 minutes, so the service is 5.75 stars. This hotel is absolutely beautiful. It is about 300 meters from the central train station. That means if the weather is fair and you don't have too much luggage you can take the train from the airport to the hotel for a handful of euros. It is only 5 stories, but fans out like fingers once inside so you will probably join other people is wandering around looking for your room or the restaurant. But that is OK. First, the stained galls, marbled floors and beautiful interior woodwork deserves your attention. Second, you will meet lots of interesting people sharing directions! My favorite rooms are corner ones, so if you ae willing to haul your luggage a little further from one of the 3 vintage elevators, go for it. On the 5th floor the ceilings are about 14' and my room had six oversized windows, some of which opened to the outside. As in much of Europe there is no iron, but a good-quality pants press is present along with a Nesspresso machine. The mini bar is included, though you may need to request a re-stock. It includes: 1 1/2 bottle red wine 1 1/2 bottle white wine 2 tonics 1 sparkling water 1 still water 2 bottles of regional beer 2 cokes 2 sprites 1 large bag of peanuts There is also a tea kettle in the room. Ice is not available unless you go to the bar or restaurant and request it. They will have small buckets there. The bathrooms have been consistent, although room sizes and décor changes. You will find a large marble bath with lots of counter space, a very deep and lovely soaking tub, shower, hairdryer and premium products. If the towels were a bit more plush it would be perfect. The spa on the lower level is a real treat, especially if there is a day of typical Holland weather that you don't feel like encountering. In your room are robes and slippers. Head down. There are lockers, changing rooms and showers available. You can also book a massage (you pay for that but everything else is included). The gym is better than most I have used in a hotel, but the recumbent has been broken for a while. There is a heated pool suitable for lights (with a lovely star-lit ceiling. There are also 3 high-end private (for 2) saunas. There is even a cold shower in the same area, making the sauna experience perfect. But my favorite is the Turkish bath. It sits 10 or so, but I have always had it to myself. The spa makes this hotel a standout. Breakfast is included in most rates. Otherwise it is 25 Euros. The spread is good and typical of a European buffet: a good selection of meats and cheeses (including a veal sausage that is heaven), vegetables and salad, fruits, breads and pastries as well as the typical American stuff like scrambled eggs. The coffee is average. The breakfast is a great way to fuel yourself for a day of walking and sightseeing, or using one of the hotel bikes to get around the city. The location is as good as it gets. Across the canal is a sightseeing office if you need to book something. About 4 blocks away is the Red Light District and "coffee" shops. Since the city is so international you have your choice of a variety of restaurants within five minutes from Amrath. Checking in can be a bit cumbersome. Because the hotel is so complicated to navigate (but the bar is right next to check-in!) there is a spiel for each new guest about the hotel. And the check-in area is more like three podiums - usually with only 1-2 people there. But service is perfect. Even at odd times I get a taxi within 3-5 minutes. This is a long review but I wanted to put everything in one place. Before I stayed here even after the reviews I had questions. Since Amsterdam is usually a jumping-off point into the rest of Europe I use this hotel a couple of times a year. It is by far my choice.

Yelp
It was our first time in this hotel and we absolutely loved staying there. The location is unbeatable as far as closeness to the center of all attractions but it's located somehow that you don't hear the noise from outside. We were given an apartment as they call it which had two stories but my husband didn't like it and asked for a one level suite instead and boy we were given the nicest one! The desk manager ( Patrick Bok) was the nicest guy and he accommodated all our needs! The breakfast was also amazing and made to order in addition to the variety which was available to us as well. We truly enjoyed our stay and we highly recommend this great hotel!

Yelp
No, no , no. Don't do it. I paid extra for a Junior Suite. Great room, but WOW the service was awful. With the room, the mini bar was supposed to be included and replenished every early afternoon. It took me 12 phone calls to the front desk over the span of 2.5 hours to get it finally stocked at 7:15 p.m. Some other little issues as well. Never again.

Yelp
It's quite a beautiful hotel, one that will be appreciated by anyone looking for that early 1900's feel. I'm in love with the glass and iron work around. I've much enjoyed my time in the bar talking with the bartenders and overlooking the gorgeous canal. It's close to everything, yet quite. It's spacious, interesting and they have a nice wellness center as well. The saunas and indoor heated pool and jacuzzi were empty! All to myself, awesome!

Yelp
Shockingly this 5 star hotel did not have air conditioning. We happened to visit Amsterdam during an unusually hot period of time with temperatures in the 90's. The rooms were stifling hot and I wasn't able to get any sleep as the room was 80+ degrees. There were many guests that were unhappy and several guests moved to the hotel across the street that had air-conditioning. Now I must say, the staff was amazingly helpful and did the best they could but they could not fix the weather. The hotel itself was very nice with exceptional rooms. I understand that these temperatures are very rare in Amsterdam but as a 5 star hotel I excepted excellence which is not what I got.

Carla Jayne R.

Yelp
Old hotel - quite beautiful but strange layout. Friendly, helpful staff. Room was too warm but a fan helped.

Gianguido G.

Yelp
I just lounged at the bar. It is a good place. Open late. Not too crowded. Quite small for such a big 5 star hotel but it fits people Barman is really nice. Definitely a luxury place. Very refined manners and many languages spoken. The ambience is standard. Not too many frills but it does its job. Not a place I would scream to get back but on the street nearby there is not too much else. The drink menu is not too long but they have plenty of cocktails on demand they can prepare. Maybe it looks and feel like a classy hook up place, so what? We need those also right? :) It is on my map and either for an aperitivo or a night cap they will see me back. It pricey. Way above the Amsterdam average.

Yelp
I have been fascinated with Amsterdamse School since I originally heard about it some years ago, so obviously when I had a chance to stay at the old Scheepvaarthuis, now the Grand Hotel Amrath, I jumped at the chance and reveled in all the impeccable details of the gorgeous Art Nouveau interiors. The room was absolutely perfect and the décor of the entire place was mesmerizing. You could tell the gentleman who showed me to my room adored the place and so did many of the other people staying here. I cannot say enough positive things about the actual hotel and most especially about the actual building. I spent a great deal of time photographing the exterior and interior details even down to the gorgeous cushions on the chairs. My issue with this hotel comes down to the front desk staff. I spent more time fighting over payment than I did sleeping in this hotel. When I initially checked in I was told that my room was not prepaid (it was). I spent a great deal of time waiting while the person checking me in tried to figure out the prepaid billing that was set up. I was asked to authorize my card twice for large amounts each time. At this point I did not trust that I would not be charged for this great sum, so I pushed back and was again forced to wait for a long time while the person checking me in called a supervisor and eventually only authorized my card for one large amount. When I checked out I had already spoken to the travel group who had prepaid for the room and they assured me they were in contact with Grand Hotel Amrath, but in order for me to leave the hotel I was again made to wait and then was forced to give a charge on my card. The hotel staff assured me they would straighten out the billing issue and refund my card. They also took my mobile number and promised they would call me that afternoon. After 3 days I checked my online statement and I was indeed charged for the room, but the travel company was also charged. The double billing I told the hotel I was trying to avoid was exactly what happened. The travel company again had to call the hotel and they refunded my card, but this mess was wholly avoidable. I have never seen such an issue with a prepaid booking. The staff of the hotel made the visit one I cannot recommend in all good conscience given what an incredibly frustrating experience it was. There were no solutions offered and no consideration to customer experience. I went from being a person who was beyond excited to stay in this hotel and tell everyone I know about the amazing suite and my incredible stay to a person who questions whether she can even recommend this gorgeous hotel given the abhorrent customer experience. It would have been easier to stay at a Marriott or a Hilton where I've never had a problem with billing rather than open myself to this comedy of errors from the front desk staff. How can such a famous and beautiful hotel have such inept front desk workers?

Yelp
For staying in downtown Amsterdam the location was good. IT was across from the train station and near the point where tours start - both Canal and Bus. The mini-bar use was included in the price, I guess if you used it frequently it might cost you an additional $20-30 of supplies, and they pick the contents not you (and not elegant). My vote, ignore that feature and buy better quality wine, beer, and snacks at the store. The "Museum-like" appearance of the place was another plus. They never got wake up calls working at all. We nearly missed both the tour and our return flight. All their recommendations (tours, restaurants, ...) were the most expensive with clearly money in their pocket. Find places by looking on internet or talking to others. The HVAC system never worked, making it challenging to sleep. Staff were not knowledgeable, the person booking the tour said all the low costs ones were sold out or unavailable at the hotel (even thought the hotel was listed as a stop) - contradicting the tour center. Their "discounts" are available everywhere. They also send you to the wrong place to get the bus, bad if you have any walking challenges. Pricey hotels are ok with you me if you get the value for that price. This is not the case.

Yelp
My friend and I stayed here last November for three nights. We absolutely loved Amsterdam and we found this hotel incredibly charming and most importantly, centrally located. We could walk everywhere: the train station is only a 5 minute walk from the hotel and once you get to the hotel you are in the heart of the old city center. You can walk to all the sights (we even walked back from the Van Gogh museum), cafes, restaurants and bars. If you arrive expecting a five star hotel then you will likely be disappointed. For more reviews check out the ratings on TripAdvisor. Having done our research well, we certainly were not expecting a five star experience and we were pleased with the value for the money we spent (so much more than what you get in Brussels, Paris, etc). I found the room very spacious for European standards (we had two double beds), and as many reviewers have noted, the mini bar is re-stocked each night. The bathroom was quite large, with a great tub as well as a separate shower. I found the staff friendly and there is free wifi as well. The lobby area gets crowded so you do have to wait to check in, check out, etc. They store your luggage and have a restaurant and bar onsite (did not check out either, as the hotel is walking distance to many great dining options).

Yelp
This hotel is rated as a five star hotel, but I would definitely question this rating. Probably more of a 4 star (though overall still a pretty good value). Pros: Location, The stocked refrigerator, The extremely cool art deco design (both inside and out), Staff were mostly friendly and helpful. It is quite large (definitely one of the biggest hotels in Amsterdam). I got a ridiculous deal on this hotel in April on priceline. Cons: So it's rated as a five star hotel, and I recognize that it's an older building with historical character. But it felt old and as if it could stand a once over renovation. The elevator was slow and really old-fashioned. The gym was barely a gym (which I prioritize when I travel) with a rickety elliptical and little else. Also, the cleaning service left a sort of threatening message at my door when I requested privacy for a day while catching up on several days of jet lag telling me that they would *have* to clean my room. Then they never came. The internet is a little on the slow side but functions fairly well. My television didn't work. Also, the hotel card key kept getting deactivated by my OV Chipkaart (I kept them in the same pocket), which took about three days for me to figure out. Staff seemed a little confused by the whole thing. All in all, it was a pretty good value, convenient, and with friendly staff. Though I question the 5 star rating given the oldish features of some aspects of the hotel.

Yelp
Totally happy with this place. And my wife is happy, too, which makes me super happy. The room and bathroom were HUGE and sparkling clean. The location is perfect! So close to the center/heart of Amsterdam, yet at a corner enough that there's not much bike/car/pedestrian traffic around the hotel itself. Excellent amenities. They upgraded our room to deluxe for free. The mini bar was free...they kept replenishing the small wine and liquor bottles, which was awesome. The WiFi was pretty fast and consistent. We did have one hiccup with the WiFi, but they rebooted their router and that fixed the issue. They even let us use a US power adapter, free of charge. Probably gonna book here again next time we come back to Amsterdam.

Yelp
Agree with previous review! Jose IS a GOD! Perhaps he's part of the reason I did a 180 when I was about to check in at the airport? I thought, "My time in Amsterdam is not complete". I canceled my flight, booked the train back to Amsterdam and checked BACK into Amrath. I look forward to spending a whole day in that kick ass spa tomorrow, Jose included. Energize these Chakras, honey! This is, by far, the most spectacular hotel I've ever encountered. It's old, beautiful, trippy, confusing, ornate...free and speedy WiFi + mini-bar that's restocked daily! Getting lost in this crazy, burgundy labyrinth with misleading signs while meeting people that span the globe unified by our confusion and WTF-ness. An added bonus is I really think this place is freakin' haunted! Curtains automatically open and close at odd times (like in the middle of the night). My buddy said he woke up early and the espresso machine was running....no one was awake. Concierge said people have reported seeing silhouettes in the basement. Charming, no?

Yelp
I stayed there in August and i had a wonderful time there. The Room was big and beautiful. Really big and comfortable bed, I got a good night sleep when I stayed there. It's close to everything in Amsterdam, so we didn't need to take a metro or a cab. Why it don't get 5 stars is because I was waked up almost every morning of the housekeeper that wanted to clean the room, but it was no problem to them to come later when we asked them to do so. I will definitely recommend this hotel to my friends and family. I hope you have a good time there like I had

Yelp
I stayed here for a week during March 2015. The staff here are the best I have ever encountered!! From the bar staff to the concierge, everyone was helpful and always had a funny story to tell. It's not as pricey during the colder months, also there is no air conditioning. So the summer months must be horrid. This hotel is also within walking distance of everything!!!

Bill S.

Yelp
We stayed there for three nights and enjoyed them all. Very close to Central train station, walking distance. Close to the red light district and lots of dining. My stay was great had massages two days in a row. *Free entrance to the Spa & Wellness *Nespresso coffee machine *Free Minibar - Yes, a FREE minibar stocked with liquor, wine, beer, soda, water, juice and snacks. The minibar is restocked every day! This central location is convenient to so many museums, restaurants, bars, and coffee

Yelp
We stay here for 2 days and this hotel was great. Very spacious rooms and very comfortable beds. All employees were engaged and very customer service oriented. It is close to everything. I had a toddler with me and she had plenty of room to play inside the room. It would definitely stay here if i return to Amsterdam.

Yelp
Isn't this suppose to be a 5 star hotel? For the price I expected it to be. The service says otherwise and makes it seem like a 3 star. When I arrived, the concierge was on break so the taxi driver had to help me bring my bags up the stairs. This hotel does not have a ramp so heavy luggage carriers beware!!! When I left for my flight that departed at 11AM, I called concierge to help me with my 3 large and heavy bags filled with souvenirs from 5 countries, 2 carry ons, and 2 backpacks at 7:10AM. By 7:30AM, I called again since no one came to my room to help. By 7:40AM I gave up and took my bags down myself. by 7:47AM, my taxi to the airport that I made an RSVP for the night prior through the hotel showed up. Keep in mind, my RSVP was for 7:30AM. In the end, I made it to the airport in time to get through the VAT lines, check in, and security with 30mins to spare. The only pros were that the hotel helped me with reservations for high tea at the Amstel Intercontinental hotel, offered airport transfer for 50 Euros (regular taxi would be about 58 Euros), had complimentary spa facilities, and EVERYTHING IN THE MINIBAR IS COMPLIMENTARY!!! This includes the volka, bacardi, wine, coffee, soda, and water!!! Also prime location.

Paul W.

Yelp
I really enjoyed my stay. My room was gorgeous, and the location is very nice. Staff was wonderful. Why not 5 stars? AC did not really cool down the room much, so I had to open the windows. Fortunately, Amsterdam is quite cool at night! Also, the breakfast buffet is quite expensive. It is cheaper if you book in advance. I simply went to the McDonalds with is a about a 5 minute walk. The sauna and pool downstairs is almost always emply--and it is really nice!!!! Wifi was good. Recommended, and I hope to come back sometime!

Yelp
: Our 4night stay was very disappointing. From the time we checked in, with virtually no help from the staff in finding our room, till the time we checked out and the elevator got stuck, nothing about this hotel impressed us. The hotel is covered in scaffolding and large white drapes and we were told this is because the windows are being cleaned which seems highly unlikely-and deceptive. When we asked for an ATM we were told by staff that the nearest one was at Central Station. In fact, there are two closer-including Tours and Tickets directly across the street! The wait staff in the restaurant were consistently unpleasant. One male staff member rudely told me to step away from the coffee machine as he needed to get coffee for important guests. Another asked if I was planning to annoy him all evening-no idea why. The jacuzzi was lukewarm, the pool was cold and the entire spa area was unkempt with no staff anywhere to be found. The housekeeping staff did bare minimum cleaning and did not leave hand towels or wash cloths. We called to get them but they were never delivered. I contacted the hotel about these issues but have received no response

Deep M.

Yelp
Positives: next to Central Station, high ceilings, great views(although I always pay to upgrade my room,) cool art-deco design, very friendly staff Negatives: narrow hallways, easy to get lost inside, limited enjoyable environment (beyond your room). ....I have enjoyed staying here multiple times

Yelp
This review is for the Amrath restaurant. I'm an American living in Amsterdam and in March my mom visited together with two friends. On their last night in Amsterdam, they stayed at the Amrath hotel. We decided to have dinner in the hotel restaurant. As I stated, it was their last night in town and we wanted a nice evening. It was also the only time that my mom's friends got to meet my girlfriend (who is Dutch). So it was a special occasion. The restaurant was empty when we got there and only ended up having a few tables full throughout the dinner. This is important to note for later. The first thing is that the food was very expensive, but not very good. Even something as simple as the burger was of lesser quality than Burger Bar. While the food, price, and everything associated with them are worth noting, what made this place stick out (negatively) is how we were treated. It is why I am writing this, despite it taking place months ago. My GF and I talk about how we were treated often. It is also a negative cap on an otherwise great trip for my mom and her friends. First of all, after learning that my girlfriend was Dutch later in the dinner, he would sometimes address my girlfriend in Dutch and would ignore the rest of the table. This was extremely rude, especially as we were the ones being treated by my mom and her friends. In Amsterdam, speaking english is accepted. In a 5-star hotel that caters to international guests, this should be normal as well. As I mentioned, we were the first ones in the restaurant though it started to get filled up with Dutch-speaking tables. Even though we ordered first when maybe these tables had just arrived and ordered drinks, we were last to receive our food. Every table got their food before us and several tables came, ate, and left before we even received our food. When our food did arrive, it was wrong. I had to wave down our waiter to complain and at first he didn't care until I demanded that the dish be redone. We didn't get any soup, but they didn't take away our soup spoons. They did not clear our plates or take away glasses. Which THEY DID DO for all of the european guests around us. Our waiter and the staff never checked on us the entire time. For every interaction we had to wave him down and most of the time, he would look at us and then ignored us. We were treated like children who have never been to a restaurant before. This is insulting. It would be insulting towards anyone who has ever stepped into a restaurant before. But it was painfully obvious to us as not only has my mom owned a restaurant and been the chairman of the restaurant association in Chicago, but I also worked in the industry at a restaurant in downtown Chicago for two years as a waiter. It was completely insulting and dismissive of us based on our nationality. This behavior is unacceptable at any restaurant, let a lone a "supposed" 5-star restaurant in a 5-star hotel. I know that tipping isn't necessary in The Netherlands, but having worked as a waiter and since we were in a restaurant with the facade of being a nice place, I did leave a tip. Our waiter grabbed the book in such a jerking motion that the money and change flew all over the restaurant and then he cupped the book and walked away quickly without saying anything. That was our final interaction with him. While I would say that it was just our waiter, every other waiter and staff member in the restaurant acted the same. A similar thing happened earlier in the day at the bar where my mom and I ordered coffees and were served after european guests that had arrived after us. Maybe some American guests tore the place up a few months back or something and the employees have a vendetta against Americans, but we were exceedingly patient and polite with a staff that chose not to be.

Yelp
Had my third FANTASTIC massage here! Jose is a god!!! Best massage in Amsterdam!

Yelp
This hotel was originally built as the "Shipping House," and the hotel conversion has kept many of the wrought iron nautical themed elements, lovely leaded glass and burled wood details. Our room was large with high ceilings and a nice canal view, really nice vintage wood furniture, and an enormous bath tub (but a small shower). Robes and slippers were laid out on the beds. The complimentary mini-bar was a concept I've never seen before, and they replenished it daily. What a nice touch. They offer a very good breakfast buffet with the best croissants I've had outside France. Excellent location, near Central Station and the red light district. There's a hop on/hop off bus stop on the side of the hotel.

Yelp
A historic hotel with a very classy ambiance. It is very close to the Amsterdam Centraal Station, but in a quiet part of town. My wife and I stayed here in early July 2016 for three nights, and it's our favorite hotel now. Its location is very convenient for everything, and only a couple of blocks away from the crowded and noisy part of the city. The architecture and decor are fascinating. Wrought iron door handles, hand rails, and fences add a very unique touch to the building. Our room had the highest ceiling among all of the hotels I have ever stayed in. It was pretty large in terms of square footage, too. And the complementary mini-bar, yes, that's right, the free mini-bar, was restocked every day with white and red wine, couple of beers, regular and diet cokes, sprite, sparking water, and tonic water. Staff were very polite and we had a very pleasant stay. Highly recommended for grown-up visitors with appreciation for older and finer things in life.
