Le Grand Hotel des Bains & Spa, Locquirec, Brittany, France - Explore & Book

"Some hotels have setting, some have style, this has both in bucketfuls. Its position overlooking the turquoise Baie de Locquirec, in Brittany’s westerly province of Finistere, is breathtaking, and either side of the rocky point you have no fewer than 9 sandy beaches to choose from. French film-buffs might recognise the large, turn-of-last-century hotel: it was the setting for a 1970's Carry On-style film, before becoming a rather crusty spa resort. It was taken over by the dynamic Dominique van Lier, editor of Belgian interiors magazine Eventail, who stamped the place with his impeccable New England-meets-Swedish-Gustavian style. Bedroom walls were panelled and painted in soothing moss and fern greens, floral fabrics were replaced with stylish checks, and the austere refectory transformed into an oasis of apricot and white. The atmosphere is peaceful and relaxed, both inside the hotel and its marine spa, and in its seafront gardens, which include an exquisite lime-tree alley. The service is immaculate without pretension. The cuisine is both beautifully presented and delicious, with an emphasis on seafood – rightly so given the location. A great place to recharge the batteries for families and couples alike. Highs Great massages, hydrotherapy and beauty treatments in the marine spa, plus a sauna and a hammamThe garden is picture-book perfect, full of climbing rose bushes and hidden spots to curl up and take in the panoramic view of the coastThe 18-metre indoor swimming pool offers stunning sea viewsThere’s no road between the hotel and the sea, ensuring total tranquillityThe luminosity of the light, especially outside summer, draws artists, photographers and writers Lows Despite Dominique’s artistic touch, the corridors still feel a bit institutional and some of the bathrooms are a little datedSome bedrooms lack sea views; Standard rooms are distinctly smallYounger, more dynamic types should note the emphasis is on peace, and the clientele can be olderLight sleepers should avoid the church-facing rooms because of the bellsA little pricey; you're paying for the hotel's heritage and the peaceful location" - Clare Hargreaves

Le Grand Hôtel des Bains (Locquirec, Brittany) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Here on the Breton coast there’s a strong British influence, and it’s visible in the Grand Hôtel des Bains; you may know it as the setting for the 1978 French film “Holiday Hotel,” though the décor, in the intervening years, has been substantially updated, and is now a tribute not to England but to New England. As promised by the hotel’s name, the Marine Spa is a major attraction; there’s also an indoor pool and a private beach. Make time for the gastronomic restaurant and for La Brasserie de la Plage, both of which showcase local Breton seafood." - Tablet Hotels

This hotel is amazing! Beautiful location and outstanding staff, they really went above and beyond. The reception staff are kind, caring and warm. We will be back for sure. The breakfast spread and experience is great - don’t miss it! I wish I could give more stars. Thank you for the wonderful stay.

What an absolute delight ! The moment we walked in and greeted by staff we knew this was a good place. In fabulous private location, amazing scenery and shoreline. The hotel style and presentation was beautiful. With an indoor pool, sauna and gym. The food was excellent and good value. Again the staff were so wonderful, we loved our stay here.

The location of the hotel, the outside facilities and the spa are amazing. However the restaurant is too expensive and the food was disappointing for the price - local brasseries in the village were better. The bar was also too expensive - €7 for a soft drink or coffee, that makes London look cheap - which meant you didn’t really want to sit around and have a drink at the hotel. Some of the reception staff were also quite rude, a lot of attitude and not very helpful. Unfortunately a lot of areas for improvement for a 4* hotel.

Town view top floor rooms are quirky space wise, notably bathrooms with a little or no headspace in shower.spa personnel missing at reception and equipment down

The building and location are simply beautiful, so is the private access to the beach / bay in front of the hotel. For a 4*-rated hotel the general condition of the hotel is, however, not up to standard. Rooms and public spaces are a bit tired, there are no interesting touches to the decoration and the service is a bit laissez-fair. All staff are very nice and charming, but I would, for example, expect drinks service at the tables by the beach, or in front of the hotel. Also the wellness space is very basic. ||Management would do well to invest in a sympathetic upgrade, which would be well deserved for a house and locations as special as in this hotel.

We had a lovely stay at the hotel. It is a beautiful hotel and we had a nice room with a lovely sea view. The spa and pool are very nice and we enjoyed the facilities.||The biggest issue is the restaurant and avoid it! We had dinner at the hotel restaurant which was the only option in town during the low season. This was a total rip-off! The appetizers were ok but the main course was unbelievably poor. Over cooked fish or tasteless guinea fowl and vegetables. It is shameful to serve this type of food for this price point! More work needs to be done on the restaurant menu, wine list, and breakfast for what they would like this restaurant to be.

We last stayed here some 10 years ago in a third floor room at the back. It was cramped (the bathroom even more so) and despite the hotel's boast that it overlooked the church it really overlooked the hotel's industrial industrial infrastructure. It was, frankly, a bit grim. This time we went for a second floor room, at the front, with a balcony. It was an improvement but the room itself was still relatively small, but the bathroom was better. The room (good views over the bay and the hotel's grounds) had a nice comfy bed with nice comfy pillows, a small table and chair, flat-screen TV and a wardrobe with drawer space. The balcony had a very small table and two chairs and was just big enough to sit on and read (but perhaps not for long). The bathroom was fine with lovely towels and the usual facilities (and a shower over the bath). Plenty of hot water. Housekeeping is fine. The hotel is stylish and comfortable with a nice lounge/bar and plenty of soft sofas. The grounds are extensive and extend to the sea and there are loungers and chairs and tables to use when the weather permits. There's also a (very) small private beach. The restaurant (where you take breakfast) is spacious, airy and has good views over the sea. Breakfast is plentiful and varied and will accommodate most if not all tastes. Eggs (scrambled, fried and poached) are cooked to order. The restaurant is good and not overly pricey given the hotel's image. There are two EV charging points which are (gasp!) not charged for. But you need to bring your car's charging cable. The swimming pool is large with comfortable surrounds. A hamman and sauna are there to use with the usual array of beauty treatments. So far then so good. Any negatives? Well although the hamman can seat six you have to be fairly friendly with folk if you do. Five is a better fit. The sauna seats only two. The grounds could do with a bit more maintenance. Although there is ample storage space in the bedroom for a week's stay if you put your suitcase in the wardrobe (there's no other place for it) the available space is reduced. The staff are welcoming and friendly (as you'd expect) but service at meal-times can be a little disorganised. We found one male member of staff rude, ignorant and arrogant but he was an exception. The main problem was that the staff (with the odd exception) were distant and you (us) were treated as a commodity rather than a welcome and wanted visitor. (Our yardstick is the staff at the Hotel Brittany in Roscoff who are exceptionally good.) Overall then it's not a bad hotel: stylish, comfortable with a high standard of cuisine. But it suffers from being a Belle Epoch building converted to meet the demands of the 21st century (the head of our bath was in an alcove due to design constraints). The staff were fine but could be better. Would we return? Yes. But we might try a first floor front room next.

Excellent in every way. The staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms are clean and comfortable, the location is amazing with access to the sea, the food is delicious, the spa is relaxing and quiet, the parking is on site - what more could you want? Wonderful!
