In-Depth Review of Grand Hotel Fasano in Lake Garda, Italy - AFAR

"Steeped in history since 1888—as a Habsburg hunting lodge that later became a World War II hospital—this polished, family-run lakeside retreat (now operated by the Mayr family in its third generation) blends neoclassical grandeur with contemporary comforts. Reopened for the 2025 season after adding a new wing of four suites and a renovated Aqva Spa, the property’s 86 rooms and suites across the main building, the Villa Principe and the new wing feature a muted, elegant aesthetic with tufted headboards, shell-shaped seating, freestanding bathtubs and balconies that offer postcard views of Lake Garda. Dining ranges from a lavish breakfast buffet on a lemon‑dotted terrace and alfresco lunches beneath centuries-old magnolias (the citrusy maccheroncini riff on cacio e pepe is a highlight) to seaside dinner dishes such as inky cuttlefish linguine with black‑bread cream, plus an intimate, wood‑lined one‑Michelin‑star restaurant serving items like celeriac ravioli and a bold spaghetti brightened with oyster and raspberry; evening rituals include cocktails in a dark lounge and sunset drinks on a sprawling terrace. The upgraded Aqva Spa emphasizes relaxation with Sothys treatments—including a signature 110‑minute 1888 scrub, mud wrap, massage and facial—an indoor pool framed by regal columns, canopied beds and sunlit loungers with complimentary dried mango. Service is polite and enthusiastic, the concierge is knowledgeable, and practical touches include elevators and six ground‑floor rooms for guests with limited mobility; the property participates in the Leaders Club (Leading Hotels of the World) and rates start from around $741." - Alia Akkam

Lake Garda Travel Guide: Visiting Italy's Largest Lake Is More Affordable and Less Crowded Than Lake Como — Here's How to Plan Your Trip

"Initially built in 1888 as a hunting lodge for the Austrian royal family, this Leading Hotels of the World member has kept its historic charm while being updated for today’s modern travelers. It’s one of the few hotels in the area with direct lake access, and guests love sunbathing on the lake’s shores or catching a boat from the dock. It’s also known for its Michelin-starred restaurant, Il Fagiano." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Grand Hotel Fasano, a Design Boutique Hotel Gardone Riviera, Italy

"The historic Grand Hotel Fasano is set right on the lake shore. It offers a modern and free wellness center, a 12000-m² park with swimming pool, and a restaurant with terrace overlooking Lake Garda. The hotel is actually made up of 2 buildings, the main hotel and Villa Principe dating back to the early 19th century. Guests have private access to the lake and can enjoy a buffet breakfast out on the terrace. Rooms at the Grand Hotel Fasano are elegant and spacious. All air conditioned, they come with a mini-bar, laptop safe and LCD TV with satellite channels. The Grand Hotel Fasano's new wellness center is inspired by ancient Roman baths. It includes an indoor swimming pool, hot tub and Turkish bath, as well as a gym. Located in Gardone Riviera, this 5-star hotel is a 5-minute drive from the dock in Toscolano-Maderno for boat trips across the lake." - My Boutique Hotel (en)

Grand Hotel Fasano (Gardone Riviera, Lake Garda) 8 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"No relation to the similarly named Brazilian hotels, Italy’s Grand Hotel Fasano is a luxury hotel of classic vintage, a 19th-century royal hunting lodge on the shores of Lake Garda, at the edge of the Dolomites. It’s been owned by the same family for three generations now, and it’s seen some changes during that time — additions to the familiar neoclassical structure, and the kind of upgrades that make it suitable for 21st-century guests. Even so, it’s retained the old-world grandeur that is an increasingly scarce commodity in the hospitality world, even in Italy." - Tablet Hotels

The views are incredible. The sunrise over the mountains is impossible to forget. Being driven up to the dock by boat is something out of a James Bond movie. Swimming in the lake is an amazing feeling. Yes...there is a BUT coming. The aforementioned are all spectacular but here are the issues. The breakfast is very much continental, the only authentic thing was honey from the region, the rest pulled right from a grocery store I would guess. The food at the Pescatore restaurant isn't bad and isn't great. It lacks flare and again authenticity. Although they did kindly make two dishes for our group of 8 that were off menu, they seemed like regular home cooked plates. Steak and grilled vegetable dish literally had no seasoning. Service was very average. A few rude encounters at the front desk with a woman in particular. She was annoyed with us since we requested taxis to get to the nearby tennis courts. On one occasion she didn't even answer me, just this rude look. I'm fluent in Italian, so it's not like I wasn't understood. I was also charged 12€ for a glass of boxed orange juice and snarked at when I didn't leave tip. Let that sink in. The room was very average. We were in the older portion of the hotel. Our mattress was incredibly lumpy and definitely needs to be changed. The hotel received awards in 2020 and I suspect that was the peak.

Fabulous hotel in beautiful grounds with access directly on the lake side.|An older style hotel but with every modern convenience, the ambience of the hotel is one of casual elegance. The restaurants, terrace bar, spa and pools were lovely with great views of Lake Garda. All the staff we encountered were attentive and very pleasant. Good location on quieter side of lake but within walking distance of a number villages and attractions. Would definitely return.

This is a fine hotel. I stopped at the hotel for lunch some 20 years ago whist on a European road trip and was so impressed, that I promised myself that one day I would return and stay at the hotel. It was well worth the wait. the staff, location, facilities and the overall ambiance of the hotel are first class. The hotel was impeccably clean, food was excellent with a good menu choice and outside sitting areas were well attended by staff. |I will return in the coming years.

One of the best hotel experiences we’ve ever had. Staff was exceptionally accommodating and anticipating needs. The facilities/views/food was absolutely wonderful. We loved the spa. A little pricey but they lived up to it. There are other hotels in Italy that were similarly priced that didn’t even come close to their execution. I will definitely come back here again, without question!

We had a wonderful stay in Gardone Riviera. Our room was modern, large, comfortable, and offered stunning lake views. The pool and spa facilities were excellent, and the outdoor casual bar was our favorite spot to relax in the evenings.||The on-site restaurants were fine, but the outside bar stood out as the best dining option. The only drawback for us is that the hotel is within walking distance (20 minutes) of just one small area with only a few restaurants and shops, so having a car is helpful if you want more variety for dining or exploring. You can walk to the ferry port, which is a great way to visit other towns during the daytime along the lake. The ferry does not run into the evenings. ||Overall, an excellent stay in a beautiful location.

Absolutely beautiful hotel in a fantastic location along side the lake. Advisable to hire a car as there isn't much within walking distance Our room was kept spotless daily by a fantastic housekeeping team. The food was delicious served by very attentive staff. The attention to detail at this hotel is exceptional.....

We were a group of 7 adults (from the USA) on a family vacation to Italy (parents, kids aged 27, 24, 19 plus two of their friends). We reserved 4 rooms at the hotel and stayed for 5 nights. We had an exceptional stay. The hotel is beautiful. Perfect mix of relaxation and sophistication. Concierge team was great and arranged a boat trip around the lake, and some dinner reservations, which was invaluable as we were a large group and none of us spoke Italian. Would highly recommend this hotel.

We stayed for 2 nights at this hotel and we were quite disappointed especially when it’s €1000 a night, we expected much better. ||The hotel’s location is lovely, views over the lake are stunning as are the grounds and also a reasonable spa area. ||We were kindly given an earlier check in time of around 2:30pm but unfortunately due to traffic we weren’t able to take advantage of that. Upon departure we were denied an extended 1 hour late check out time which I think for this type of hotel with a check in time of 4pm is poor. ||I was told that the next people were arriving immediately after us so they couldn’t accommodate which I thought was strange because when you contact the hotel for an early check in, you’re told it’s not guaranteed and only upon availability. ||The noise in the hotel from other rooms both upstairs and downstairs continued for most of both nights until late and started again early in the morning. This obviously didn’t make it that relaxing. ||We thought the food choices in the hotels Mediterranean restaurant were limited and not great, nor did it change daily which again is disappointing for a hotel of this standard. ||Because of this we ate in the room both nights, again very small/limiting menu which was the same menu as the bar downstairs. ||There was no option for a simple cooked white fish and this was a bit of battle upon calling room service to order the second night. The first night the bread was stale and hard. Not what we find acceptable. ||We are use to and fortunate to stay in 5* hotels often internationally and these sorts of minor requests should not be a problem for the hotel to arrange for guests. ||Breakfast was perhaps the best meal of the day, however not sure how fresh some of it was, again the bread seemed like shop bought and the berries weren’t that fresh. ||The rooms were nice, albeit a little small (superior lake view), it was clean but the shower water pressure wasn’t very strong. ||Overall we didn’t really enjoy our stay that much, unlikely to recommend or stay again due to it being very over priced for what it was. The previous hotels we’d come from in the Dolomites far exceeded this one, which was a shame to end our trip on.
