The 20 Best Hotels in Italy: 2023 Readers’ Choice Awards

"A noble hospitality heritage meets guests’ contemporary needs and desires (and the occasional fantasy) at Grand Hotel Miramare, a luxury hotel in Santa Margherita Ligure a short way from Portofino and Cinque Terre. The Art Nouveau building gleams white in the sun amid century-old gardens. But for all of the grandeur, what most seduces are the intimate and almost down-home touches. Owner Andrea Fustinoni affectionately calls the hotel the Mira, which speaks to the feeling of being welcomed into a private residence. Each of the 36 deluxe rooms has a sea view, while the 26 superior rooms all have balconies or patios overlooking the hotel’s gardens as they rise toward the foothills of Mount Portofino." - Nicholas DeRenzo, CNT Editors

From the moment we arrived and were greeted by Salvatore, the general manager, to the moment we left 8 days later we were treated like royalty by Salvatore and his fabulous team. Our suite overlooking the ocean with balcony was superb. The large pool with more than enough lounges for everyone was beautiful and the pool attendants were attentive to offer shade, drinks or food. We dined at the pool restaurant overlooking the sea and thoroughly enjoyed the food on offer. We also dined in the main restaurant three evenings and both the fish and steak were top quality. The welcome by all the staff each morning made us feel like part of the family. EVERYONE was outstanding but we did get to know Alicia, Meagan, Nicola and Alfonso who were fun and professional. Thank you all. The spa was top quality and the housekeeping was a notch above. My bathers were hanging in the shower drying and on our return they had been placed on a coat hanger to dry. All these much appreciated little touches enhanced our stay. |Santa Margherita is a delightful town and The Grand Hotel Miramare is certainly worthy of The Leading Hotels of the World membership. We couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

We didn’t stay at the Grand Hotel Miramal this time (they were fully booked), but we did stop in for drinks at the bar—and it was absolutely fantastic. The terrace overlooks the entire city and harbor, offering one of the best views in town. Antonio, our barman, was excellent—great drink recommendations, a bit of hotel history, and top-notch service all around. It’s a stunning hotel with a small number of rooms, so book early. We’ll definitely be staying here the next time we’re in town. Can’t wait to come back.

This is a superb hotel in a beautiful position. We had a week here to celebrate a major anniversary and think we made an excellent choice. The decor is lovely, fitting the architecture. The breakfast buffet had everything you could wish for. The dinner menu was varied, interesting and beautifully presented, though it did not change throughout our stay. |We loved our room with a balcony overlooking the beautiful grounds and the town beyond. One minor point here is that the wardrobe doors squeaked and the keys were loose in the locks - probably a sign of their age.|But the chief factor was the attention to detail in the servicing of the rooms and the quality of the very numerous staff who were charming, attentive and friendly. They were extremely professional without being at all remote. As befits a hotel of this standard they had eyes in the backs of their heads and attended to every minor detail without being in any way intrusive.|Yes, it's expensive, but well worth the money.

This hotel is absolutely incredible from the staff, to the grounds, to the amazing and impeccable service. This is our 20th anniversary, and my wife and I had never been to Italy. The attention to detail, overwhelming, how amazing each staff member wanted to make our trip. I cannot thank this staff enough for making our three days at thisincredible hotel something we will never forget. The gentleman playing the piano every night made the trip incredibly memorable, not a single detail left undone.

It has an amazing garden and is right next to the sea. The concierge is very helpful and helps you organise activities. The rooms are well equipped and the beds are very comfortable, and some of the rooms have a wonderful sea side view. The one problem is the WiFi was quite slow so if you’re planning to do work in your hotel room, note that you may need to use a private connection. But other than that the service is great and it was an all round excellent experience.

Perfection for the area. A timeless hotel, quietly opulent, full of charm and staffed with amazing people. ||In a country of passionate and caring people, these folks truly stand out. ||Excellent service, exquisite dining, old world charm. ||From the moment you enter the lobby they treat you like a well respected member of the family. ||Views are amazing, location is superb and all the modern amenities you need are wrapped in a vail of 1950’s charm and elegance. ||Our son got the flu in Bologna before we arrived. They cooked special food, sent warm lemon water to the room, and had a known doctor make a house call 2 hours after we asked. That’s beyond service. It’s care and compassion. ||We’ve had the pleasure of traveling to many places around the world and visiting some memorable hotels. The Grand Hotel Miramare easily ranks in the top tier. ||Come.

This is a wonderful hotel. The location is ideal for the harbour, restaurants and is close enough to walk to Portofino if you are able bodied and enjoy a very pleasant walk. The pool is beautiful and clean and the pool attendant extremely helpful and pleasant. The hotel is set in splendid gardens and they are very well kept. The rooms are lovely, spacious and elegant. The only reason I didn't give five stars is that we had some very loud people in the room above on our last night and it did disturb us. The hard floors probably exacerbated the noise transmission so it probably wasn't just their loud voices and stamping around to blame. The elegance of this hotel is evident at first glance. However for us the outstanding feature which would bring us back is the amazing warmth and attentiveness of the staff. All the staff were great but I would like to specifically praise the staff on reception and the guys who welcome you to the hotel and deal with your luggage. First class.

Hotel Grand Miramare is in the perfect location overlooking the Mediterranean. The rooms are spacious and well appointed. In room coffee maker that is refilled daily. The service is exceptional and the food is delicious in all of the restaurants. The morning breakfast lacks for nothing. The bathroom is well equipped with high-end products. I highly recommend Hotel Grand Miramare.

Yelp
Lovely hotel with amazing setting. Room overlooking the sea. Hotel staff very attentive and welcoming. Food is great and the continental breakfast is a great start to the day. 40 min walk from Porto fino on very scenic walk. Pricey but you get what you pay for. If you want a cheaper place with less service and less cleanliness and not as pristine setting then go for it.

Yelp
This hotel has a restaurant we anticipated would be exceptional. I had the special of the day. Pasta and lobster. The dish should have been brimming with flavor. Lo and behold there was no flavor. The sauce and the lobster were made for people on bland diets. At 36 euros this was a major disappointment to me. Nobody inquired how our food was. The staff asked if we wanted dessert. That was the only communication we had with them. As they say "You can't go through life on good looks alone. A stately hotel such as Miramare can not run their kitchen any less. Disappointed customer being honest.

Yelp
We were told we booked a the larger suite - when we arrived we were shocked to learned to we were lied to. They gave us a room overlooking the side of the garden, no views and the rooms were two basic rooms side by side. They were not connecting rooms - this was no a suite When we asked the front desk super Andrea he said they were fully committed - we looked online and there was availability, so we showed him online he literally laughed and said his shift was over, and walked off. Terrible people - just awful.

Yelp
This was truly an awesome experience. When we arrived at check-in were given extremely helpful guidance that was beyond what we expected. This set the tone for the experience going forward. The hotel and our room was classic Italian riviera (at least our impression of it) and we loved it. The bed was extremely comfortable, the views were awesome, and the amenities were excellent. Breakfast was fantastic and the service made you feel like a truly valued guest. Amazing. Within walking distance of everything. What more can I say. It was an incredibly memorable experience and I recommend it 100%!

Yelp
Great hotel. We spent a few days there and loved everything about it. Great breakfast and restaurant for dinners. Friendly and very helpful staff. The girl smells AMAZING. Pool and grounds are beautiful. We will be back.

Yelp
This place certainly qualifies as a piece of heaven on earth. What a special place this hotel is, a true class act! We were greeted so warmly and professionally by the staff upon arrival. The lady at the front desk took time to show us around the hotel and we were escorted to our room. We could not believe the magnificent view out of our hotel room (we had of course booked an ocean view room but all throughout our stay, the view just kept taking our breaths away). The hotel grounds are so beautiful, from the garden in the back to the ocean view terraces which make a lovely spot for breakfast or an evening cocktail. The hotel has a beautiful sea water pool and despite the water being cold, it still provided a very refreshing and ideal alternative to the sea. All the staff were very polite, helpful, and kind. The rooms were serviced so beautifully every day and it felt truly like being at home there. Even though the king bed had separate mattresses, it was still very comfortable and so were the pillows. The windows and the shades do a fantastic job at blocking outside noise and light so the rooms provide great sleep quality. The breakfast, which was included in the reservation was served buffet style with great options: cereals, eggs, pastries, etc. The lunch service by the pool, the cocktail service on the terrace, and the room service were all fabulous. The hotel also offers valet parking for 25 euros per night. We were very happy with our overall experience at the Grand Hotel Miramare and cannot wait to go back there. The hotel has a beautiful landscape both in the back and by the pool so one can imagine how much work goes into maintaining the property's green areas. Some occasional noise might be present from gardening equipment which did not bother us. They do wait until a reasonable hour to start in the morning, but sitting by the pool might not be totally and completely quiet. I have to add, that I do believe this hotel deserves a five-star rating.

Yelp
Old school, modern prices though. You can't deny the charm of this place, it's a gorgeous white building overlooking the gulf, with a private terrace and a luxurious swimming pool. It's at the opposite side of the "Imperiale Palace Hotel", which in hindsight is better located, but even more outrageously expensive. Both the train station and the docks are closer to the other side, so the Miramare imposes a bit of a walk, but still manageable, especially when the promenade makes for such a beautiful experience. There's also a bus station right in front, but during off hours good luck waiting for that bus. The rooms are nice, but I don't get the fixation with the old habit of the key with the brass pendant. It's annoying, heavy and probably not very secure when you leave it behind, because they don't ask for an ID when you claim it back from the Concierge. I was also surprised to see there were no outlets in the room, it's either the nightstand lamp or your phone, you can't charge and get the light at the same time. At the desk? No better, but you do get free internet access, which is nice. Thumbs up for the breakfast, on the gorgeous terrace. I tried a bit of everything, but the foccaccia ligure ended up being my favorite pick: it's fresh and it's the original focaccia, you can't leave Liguria without having it tried it at least once. Overall, a pleasant experience, but next time I'd rather stay at a less glamorous place that's more central.

Yelp
WOAH! This hotel smells like an entire shipping container of air freshener spilt in it. They're clearly trying to cover something up. I went to multiple floors and tried different rooms but they were all as pungent as the last. I was immediately sneezing with itchy eyes. There was no way I could sleep a night in this hotel and of course they refused to refund me my 600 euros. I was basically in tears from the allergy this smell gave me and the hotel manager was so rude, I don't think I've ever been spoken to like that. This is a definitely a hotel to avoid. There are so many other cute hotels in the area !
