The 11 Most Underrated and Beautiful Islands in Italy

"For a relaxed, adults-only stay in La Maddalena I based myself at Grand Hotel Resort Ma&Ma, which offered spa facilities and easy access to boat tours of the archipelago." - Nicky Swallow Nicky Swallow Nicky Swallow is a freelance travel writer who has lived in Florence, Italy for the past three decades. Grand Hotel Ma&Ma Resort (La Maddalena, Sardinia) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"The Isola Maddalena, just off the northern coast of Sardinia, is home to a lavish, modern, and blissfully adults-only hotel: the Grand Hotel Ma&Ma. The rooms and suites range widely in size, from the economical Classic to the properly lavish Presidential suite, and the hotel’s four floors are decorated in four distinct styles: minimal, casual, romantic, and “fashion.” The spa is an extensive one, with a sauna, a Turkish bath, and a heated pool, and the restaurants offer some variety as well, from the upscale L’Antica Isola to the casual, open-air, wood-fired MaMa Pizza." - Tablet Hotels

We are on our last night at the Ma&Ma and have been here for 10 Nights. The staff are definitely 5 star, they can’t do enough for you. They ordered taxi’s for us and book restaurants in town when required. The pool staff were extremely friendly and assisted when we requested for the umbrella for shade. Breakfast had a good choice of foods hot and cold and loved the pancake machine. When I realised there were no tea making facilities I asked at reception and this was provided, personally I feel as a 5 star tea and coffee facilities should be provided. Also when requesting an ironing board I was advised they don’t provided that service but we could use the laundry at 15euros an item. Bearing in mind all guests arrive with a suitcase with creased clothes I feel this should be provided, we stay in 5 star hotels all the time and I have never come across this. We enjoyed a couple of lunches at the pool, food was very good. yes they are expensive but I understand this is 5star prices but when you order a beef taco and get one taco for 24 euros I feel this isn’t balanced as for the same price you can get a club sandwich with fries. Spa was great I had 2 treatments reflexology and full body massage the beautician were outstanding best treatments I have received in a long time. You get 2 hours free with your booking which has to booked, but again if you want to use again it’s 35 euros for 2 hours. With regard to the outside pool I did use it but it’s the coldest pool I’ve been in and I feel that people are put off actually using the pool area. I love the beanbag sun beds and that they are scattered around the gardens. I hope management read this as a few tweeks and it could be perfect. The beach bar is a slight let down I don’t feel it’s luxury enough for the cost, we did have a drink at the bar and the staff again were very friendly. We had a very enjoyed and relaxed holiday

I expected more from this hotel after reading the reviews. While the room was clean and comfortable and the staff friendly, it did not feel like a 5-star experience. Almost everything seemed to come at an extra cost, even the in-room coffee was charged. These additional charges made the stay feel more like a budget hotel rather than a 5 star hotel.|The spa and sauna were available but not included (one visit was included), the pool and the gym was rather small. The beach area (more rocky than sandy) charged extra for the sunbeds.

The best part of this hotel is the staff, from the desk to the cleaning crew, spa personnel and waiters: Best staff around - so friendly and professional. Especially want to highlight the hard work and friendly nature of Francesco, the assistant maître, who provided us with a perfect experience during our stay.

Simply NOT a 5 star hotel. We spent one week at this hotel (which admittedly, was the only nice hotel we found on La Maddalena). The room was clean, but lacked a depth of detail for a 5 star hotel: 1) The AC was super loud and the fan speed could not be adjusted. 2) The shower drain was loose, and there was a constant smell coming from it. 3) The shower walls were not properly sealed so that the bathroom was under water after every shower. I’ve heard from this problem from other reviews, so I can assume this is a hotel-wide issue. 4) The safe did not work when we got there, and it had to be adjusted by hotel staff. 5) The door to the balcony did not open properly. 6) The shower gel was so awkwardly installed that when using it, the gel ran down the shower wall. The service was great, the breakfast staff, cleaning staff as well as the reception was super friendly and helpful. The only thing I could point out here is that even though I explicitly told the cleaning staff to keep my towels (I even wrote it in Italian to be prevent any misunderstanding), they still replaced them. The breakfast was good, but lacked the excellence of a 5 star hotel. The breakfast room was packed, loud, and uncomfortable. Anyone who wanted to spend some quiet time in the outside eating area was unfortunately met with a horde of wasps, which left many guests going back in to finish their meal. I would have not been that disappointed if the hotel was 4 stars, but I simply expect more from an European hotel with such self proclaimed high standards.

You have to pay for their own beach chairs and the sea is not directly at the hotel. The snacks there are no snacks, it is comparable to restaurant prices. Prices of beverages are much higher than outside the hotel, so we have renounced. Despite we would have been able but at some point you simply dont Like it anymore. Room was clean. Carrier are nice. But all in all we have missed in the hotel the special character.

We have just returned from a 2 week stay at the Ma&Ma Grand Resort Hotel and enjoyed every minute of it.|From the start, we booked our transfer through the hotel, they responded quickly via email to confirm arrangements and the driver was prompt and clearly visible at the airport and made journey to the hotel, easy and hassle free. |Check-in was efficient and painless with our room ready immediately (arrived around midday). We had booked a superior double room which was well decorated, spotlessly clean and had a nice balcony with a partial sea view. The bed was comfortable, and a quick call to the concierge had the air con 'lock' removed so that we could reduce the temperature. There was adequate storage and a safe provided. Also in the room was a fridge (charged mini bar) but with room to store your own drinks. The bathroom was a good size with a nice shower and toiletries. If any minor issue, then there was no tea/coffee making facility in the room which would have been nice and generally expected in a 5* establishment, however, these were always available elsewhere in the hotel.|We spent many days around the pool area where there are no sun beds directly adjacent to the pool (not an issue), but always plenty available in the garden area where they were afforded ample space with options for direct sun or full shade depending on your preference. The sun beds were large and comfortable with a table per pair. The pool was is clean and refreshing and rarely busy. There are a number of chairs & tables around the pool for which are serviced by a very well managed pool bar which is open most of the day serving a wide variety of warm drinks, alcohol and soft drinks as well as a well thought out food selection. The service provided at the bar was exceptional with warm friendly staff through the day and evening. The pool bar remains open through the evening serving aperitivo snacks with your drinks with live music on certain evenings. |We ate at the restaurant and the MaMa pizzeria on a couple of occasions and inked the food and service in both. There is a large lounge bar adjacent to the reception, however, this was rarely used and never seemed to have anyone in there (either staff or customers), not sure why as it is a lovely room with a grand piano and comfortable seating.|We used our free (included with the stay) 2hr spa visit and found it to be a very relaxing experience. The 1 visit per stay rule seems a bit odd as you get a 2hr free spa visit if you are staying 1 night and the same 2hr free visit if you are staying 2 weeks, an additional charge of €35 per person is levied should you wish to visit again - whilst it was nice, we did not bother with a second visit, seemed a little unfair that a 1 night stay gets you a single visit and a 2 week stay also gets you a single visit.|We used the beach club (booked a front row gazebo) on one of the days at a cost of €120 which was nice, although the beach is mainly rocks with a couple of small strips of sand were you can enter the sea (which is wonderfully clear and calm).|La Maddalena - we walked into town most days/evenings - don't let anyone tell you it's a 15-20 minute walk, it was at least 30 minutes at a good pace, the first 10 of which are along a main road with no path to walk on. Once you reach the path it becomes a very pleasant walk and well worth it once you reach the town where a plethora of bars, cafes, shops and restaurants await, each one as welcoming and friendly as the last. The town centre is a fabulous place stop and have a drink and a snack whilst watching the world go by and definitely worth the effort of walking into town - taxi's are available but not widely and not always easy to arrange.|All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Ma&Ma and would definitely return to La Maddalena and to the Ma&Ma.

We have just spent 6 nights at the hotel . Departed 19.09.25.|On first impressions, everything good , however I must point out a few areas that let the hotel down and therefore I wouldn’t rate this as a 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ hotel.|1 . The pool is unusable , too cold, even after a hot summer and good weather on the island.|2. no tea / Coffee facilities in your room. This should be a standard option in my opinion. |3. We ate the first night at the restaurant and the standard of food wasn’t great from what we paid. The best part was the sardeas. ( dessert) .|4. The beach club is an area of overpriced beds / sun loungers in a area they have created near the hotel, which is spread out on a rocky outcrop with no beach! |5. The hotel was busy with not enough parking bays for guests.|Overall we had a good break , made use of the spa which was good , this is included in your room rate ( 1 visit) .|The bar and drinks typically over charged as hotels do, so no surprise.|Breakfast was good, with a good choice. |Special thanks to Fiore & Nina who were amazing .

We had an amazing stay at the Grand Hotel Resort Ma&Ma! Everything was perfect! They also offer a complimentary 2-hour spa session with the room. The ambiance by the pool at night was so romantic! Breakfast was fantastic, with a great selection of food. We would love to come back again and would recommend this hotel without hesitation!
