Rimini: Italy's Fabled Seaside Resort Is so Much More Than a Beach Town

"Time stands still — in a good way — at this five-star, Liberty-style palace steps from the sea. Once he could afford to stay here, Fellini became a regular — it features in his Oscar-winning 'Amarcord,' and the hotel leans heavily on its cinematographic ties. Rooms and suites combine airiness and old-style charm, and there’s simply not a more posh address in Rimini." - Elizabeth Heath Elizabeth Heath Elizabeth Heath is a writer and editor living on a hill in Umbria, from where she writes about travel in Italy, the rest of Europe, and farther afield. We had a pleasant 4 night stay. The hotel has a private beach and a small kids pool next to the beach which was fantastic. The main pool isn’t heated so very cold for kids even in August. I’d say it is very traditional in style which is not what we usually opt for in a hotel, however we were meeting friends there and it seems like the best hotel in Rimini. The main negative for us is that as with much of Italy, the restaurant was not prepared for those who have a nut allergy, I only found one helpful waiter who was able to speak good enough English to discuss what food definitely did not contain nuts

A beautiful and luxurious place with excellent valet parking when arriving by car. The feeling of staying here is truly splendid—exactly how a Lady should feel, like royalty. The rooms are spacious and elegant, and the cuisine is wonderful. Breakfast was outstanding with a wide variety of choices. For lunch and dinner, we experienced buffet-style dining, which may have been due to the holiday period, but it’s not really our preferred style for a hotel of this caliber—we personally prefer à la carte service. On those occasions, we chose to dine elsewhere. Still, everything else was exceptional and made for a truly memorable stay.

Bed's are amazing, incredibly comfortable, beach was lovely, beach sun bed towels were super soft, the beach staff were nice. And that's where the positives end. |No tea or coffee facilities in the room, you have to call down for a "kettle kit", which turned out to be literally a kettle so again you have to call for tea bags and milk. There are two nightclubs that blast music until 4am so dependant on where your room is, it may mean you get no sleep. ||But ultimately its the staff that let this place down and downgrade it from a supposed "5 star" to a 3 star. The younger staff are good, attentive and friendly and should be kept and cherished. The older staff (restaurant manager, male and female), working at breakfast and dinner are just a let down. Rude, inattentive and slow. They avoid eye contact so you spend ages waiting to ask someone for something. When they finally decide to answer you, its then a long wait. We once received our drinks after the meal had ended despite asking a couple of times. This was on our first night of arrival. They seem to favour the older guests which is so ridiculous, the hotel is going to need to impress the younger guests to ensure the future of the hotel otherwise it will literally die out. Such a disappointment and I won't be recommending this hotel to anyone. Quite the opposite.

Beautiful hotel in a prime Rimini location, but the 5-star label feels a bit generous. No bellman to help with luggage upon arrival AND leaving the hotel, front desk service needs a serious upgrade, and there’s no poolside service - doesn’t feel like a 5 star. The gym is tiny and you have to reserve it, which feels a bit unnecessary. Rooms aren’t stocked with daily water, though housekeeping was excellent. Nice property, but if you’re expecting true 5-star service, you might be a little disappointed.

The hotel makes a great first impression — an elegant building, stylish lobby. We were warmly welcomed by a courteous staff member at the parking lot, who helped with our luggage and parked the car. The reception was just as friendly. Unfortunately, everything went downhill from there. The first room was far from a 5-star standard: creaking wardrobe doors, grout painted with gold glitter, a yellowed and mismatched toilet seat, a damaged bathtub with a shower function, and a strong vinegar smell that lingered in the second room we were moved to as well. The bathroom was unpleasant, and staying in the room was very uncomfortable. On the plus side, the polite receptionist offered us another room, with an extra charge of €86, reduced to €80. Still, for that price, the first room should have met the standard in the first place. The beach service was a complete disappointment: €110 per day for two loungers, an umbrella, and towels — the same price even for just 2 hours. We tried to sit for a moment with our own towels, but were asked to leave the front beach row. Even though we were hotel guests, we were told we couldn’t be there without paid loungers — humiliating and frustrating. On the positive side, the parking, reception, and bar staff were very polite and helpful. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the beach personnel. Definitely not deserving of 5 stars. We will not return. It’s a shame there’s no way to request a refund. One big disappointment.

I had a lovely stay at the Grand Hotel Rimini. The location is excellent—right across from the beach and within walking distance to great restaurants, bars, and shops. From the moment I arrived, the service stood out. Staff greeted me at the entrance, opened the doors, and provided valet service. They even took care of my luggage and brought it to the room, which was a nice touch. The hotel’s interior is beautiful and has a charming, historic feel—reminiscent of the Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo. I booked the most affordable room, which was small and faced the parking lot. While not ideal, it wasn’t a major disappointment given the price. That said, I highly recommend upgrading your room—upgrade prices are quite reasonable, and you’ll get a more spacious room with a much better view. The pool area was peaceful and relaxing, with excellent bar service offering drinks and snacks to enjoy poolside. The hotel amenities were top-notch overall, and the breakfast buffet was delicious with plenty of variety. A solid, elegant stay with great service—I’d definitely return.

We stayed at the Grand Hotel for a 6 daay break in August, and couldnt fault the high standards of service, accommodation and very importantly, food!|The beach was pristine and extremely well run the very helpful Christian and colleagues kept everything in tip top order. The buffet lunch in the beach restaurant was beyond compare- we were sending unbelievable photos of the amazing variety of delicious choices available every lunch time. Masses of vegatables and salads as well as meat fish and pasta- all freshly cooked and presented in a most appetising way.|Jon Paulo in reservations was helpful in every way and looked after us making sure our room choice was exactly what we wanted.|In the dining room the food was truly exceptional and not at all what you might expect in a hotel restaurant. Every night it was a fresh and innovative meal which would have a 10 out of 10 for taste, presentation and no extended wait times!|Our lovely wine sommelier Elida was so knowledgeable and not just about Italian wines ! We learned a lot from her and her recommendations were always excellent.|What more can I say - we had a lovely relaxing break at this lovely grand old hotel -which has been refurbished to the highest standards without losing the original beauty of its interiors- which sadly seems to happen at a lot of hotels, and they lose their charm. Our thanks to all the lovely staff! |I

I arrived at the hotel just past noon and found the receptionists busy, but they soon started helping me, and I was glad to get my room in about 15 minutes, some two hours ahead of the official check-in time of 2:30 pm. I marvelled at the grand lobby, took some photos of the bar and the grand staircase, but was finally hugely disappointed when I opened the door to my "room" 301.||I entered a closet. A very nice closet, though, with worn-out parquet floors and a high ceiling. But the size was unacceptable, akin to a basic three star hotel room. There was a comfortable bed measuring 100 cm in width and with a socket by the bed, a miniature desk and chair and a minibar. No sitting area, not even an armchair, because there was simply no room for one. A/C was set to 22°C and could not be adjusted nor turned off. Wifi was free, unlimited, and very easy to use, but on Friday evening it was extremely slow. There was a safe in the room, but no water bottles. The electrical blinds went up automatically in the early morning hours, three times, waking me up each time, and when I lowered them, after some 45 minutes up they went again. Very annoying both because of the light and the noise. While the room was clean it was nothing short of a basic three star hotel room, and at a price of 225 EUR a night, it was definitely poor value. Bearable for my two-nght stay, but definitely not for a longer holiday.||The bathroom was of good size and came with a walk-in shower with good water pressure in the hand-held as well as the overhead shower. Amenities included wall-mounted containers of shampoo and shower gel, which I dont like for hygiene reasons; I've read too many stories about guests amusing themselves by fillling those containers with, well, you can imagine. I wish hotels would save money elsewhere. A bar of soap as well as individual mini-bottles of conditioner and body lotion were provided, as were a bathrobe and slippers.||Breakfast was served in the ground floor restaurant from 7 to 11 daily. It was a large buffet with a wide array of hot and cold items, breads, fruit etc. The cold cut selection could have been larger but otherwise the selection was quite good. You could also order fried eggs, but eggs Benedict would have cost extra. The hot chocolate was excellent! Service was a bit erratic and surprisingly many members of staff were not able to communicate in English.||The pool was perhaps 20 metres long, not heated so definitely on the cool side in June when nights are cold, but bearable. Hours might be the shortest I've experienced anywhere – 9 am to 5:30 pm.||The lobby bar offered snacks and some food, but was closed in the afternoon between lunch and dinner. I find it disappointing that a "five star" cannot serve a club sandwich at 4 pm because the kitchen is closed.||Check-out is at 11, and I asked for a late check-out at 1 pm, because I was catching a train at 1:45. I was granted a whopping 30 minutes extra, so check-out at 11:30. Made me laugh.||The hotel is located in Parco Federico Fellini, by the beach, with lots of restaurants nearby. It took me about 15 minutes to walk to the railway station and some 5 minutes more to the old city. The closest supermarket is 5 minutes away on foot.||While I hope to return to Rimini one day, I will find a hotel that offers a better price/quality ratio. It feels to me that this is one of those hotels that heavily relies on past decades' reputation and does not meet the needs of today. An example of their service culture can be seen here on Tripadvisor – most hotels reply to reviewers, but here, nothing.

Yelp
Old grandeur on the Rimini waterfront. Probably absolutely buzzing in summer, but in late autumn gave a more haunted experience.
