Rimini: Italy's Fabled Seaside Resort Is so Much More Than a Beach Town

"Time stands still — in a good way — at this five-star, Liberty-style palace steps from the sea. Once he could afford to stay here, Fellini became a regular — it features in his Oscar-winning 'Amarcord,' and the hotel leans heavily on its cinematographic ties. Rooms and suites combine airiness and old-style charm, and there’s simply not a more posh address in Rimini." - Elizabeth Heath Elizabeth Heath Elizabeth Heath is a writer and editor living on a hill in Umbria, from where she writes about travel in Italy, the rest of Europe, and farther afield. A Timeless Gem with Room for Improvement. This hotel is a fantastic choice for those who appreciate the charm of 20th-century architecture, ambience, and the elegance of a bygone lifestyle. It stands out prominently among the surrounding buildings, reflecting the grandeur of a true historic hotel. The property reflects the refined design sensibilities of the early 1900s, with spacious grounds, a beautifully maintained garden, a large summer-open swimming pool, and ample parking. Upon arrival, we were greeted by attentive staff who assisted with our luggage. The check-in process was swift, and the reception team was courteous and welcoming. Our room (family room) was large and aligned with the classic grand hotel design. The beds were comfortable, and the bathroom facilities were very good. However, some maintenance is needed—specifically, scratches on the room doors and squeaky wardrobe doors could use attention to preserve the overall experience. Dining at the hotel’s restaurant was a highlight. The elegant atmosphere continued seamlessly into the dining space, where service was impeccable. The gourmet-style cuisine was delicious, with portion sizes perfectly suited for a three-course meal. The wine list was extensive and thoughtfully curated. Breakfast was equally impressive, featuring a lavish buffet that included Champagne, fresh juices, cold meats and vegetables, hot dishes like sausages, bacon, and scrambled eggs, a variety of breads and pastries, yoghurts, fresh fruits, cakes, and sweet treats. Additional items could be ordered à la carte, adding to the indulgent experience. This hotel truly carries the spirit of a grand establishment but with more consistent maintance needed. It has the potential to continue delighting guests who seek the glamour and luxury of early 20th-century hospitality in a 5 star (Luxury) category.

As people have explained, this hotel is divided in a 4 star and a 5 star hotel. We stayed at the 4 star hotel but were able to have breakfast in the 5 star part which looks really nice from the outside. The room in the 4 star hotel which was right next to it, felt like an old an very simple furnished room. Clean but small and old. The breakfast was not special. The staff seemed to prefer serving Italian guests. The staff was partly friendly. Partly they just ignored us when entering the building. The private beach access was very expensive. A few meters down the road the price was a third. We would not go again.

A stunning Art Deco hotel with a grand lobby and fabulous history. However, beware of rooms with adjoining doors as they are not well sound insulated.|.|Booked an executive double room. We were allocated a small room with a balcony overlooking the garden which also had a connecting door to the next room. However, there was no sound insulation from the adjoining room and EVERY word of the conversation in the room next door could be heard as if they were sharing in the same room. It was disturbing and embarrassing when the couple next door started shouting and the front desk had to be called.||The bathroom was very stylish with bathrobes and magnifying mirror as well as soap BUT greatly disliked the combined bath/shower. It was very awkward to use and is unsuitable for older or disabled guests.||Breakfast was included and was an excellent range of fresh and hot food.|No kettle or cups were provided in the room but complimentary water was provided.||Minimal English languages channels on the TV and the internet connection was very average

Beautiful hotel in a prime Rimini location, but the 5-star label feels a bit generous. No bellman to help with luggage upon arrival AND leaving the hotel, front desk service needs a serious upgrade, and there’s no poolside service - doesn’t feel like a 5 star. The gym is tiny and you have to reserve it, which feels a bit unnecessary. Rooms aren’t stocked with daily water, though housekeeping was excellent. Nice property, but if you’re expecting true 5-star service, you might be a little disappointed.

Our rating was probably 3.5! For the price paid to stay at this famous hotel for three nights we were somewhat underwhelmed. Our room had a tiny balcony overlooking a car park. The couple who we were travelling with were assigned a room with an enormous terrace overlooking the beach. That’s the luck of the drawer! The air conditioning in our room was permanently set at 26 degrees. We reported this to Management and they told us to be patient as they tried to fix this.it took two nights,||When you are paying what we consider top dollar for accommodation at the Grand Hotel, imagine our surprise at being told we had to pay the equivalent of AUD 200 each day to access the private beach. The alternative was to use the hotel’s pool which was not heated. Coming from Australia paying to use a beach is a completely foreign concept. ||Finally, there were building works occurring at the hotel, which we did not know about until we checked in. While my wife was lounging at the hotel’s pool one afternoon tiny fragments of paint or plaster from the building works ‘rained’ on her.||All in all, we had hoped for a memorable experience at the Grand Hotel but did not get it.

We had a pleasant 4 night stay. The hotel has a private beach and a small kids pool next to the beach which was fantastic. The main pool isn’t heated so very cold for kids even in August. I’d say it is very traditional in style which is not what we usually opt for in a hotel, however we were meeting friends there and it seems like the best hotel in Rimini. The main negative for us is that as with much of Italy, the restaurant was not prepared for those who have a nut allergy, I only found one helpful waiter who was able to speak good enough English to discuss what food definitely did not contain nuts

Rooms are lovely, management is poor. They book “small private parties” on the weekends in a space right below the guest rooms and allow dis to play club volume music until midnight. Absolutely not a 5 star experience. It’s travesty to let a revered landmark go downhill. So disappointed.

Mixed feelings here... Staff has been very friendly with great quality of service and food as one can expect. However the rooms as of 2025 are in bad need of refurbishment. My room had a fairly new bathroom but at moments I felt like others were in the room as they were speaking next door. There's no soundproofing whatsoever! Corridors remind more of an old hospital than a 5* luxury hotel. Commercial policy is terrible showing no customer understanding nor willingness for them to come back. I've also witnessed a manager reprimanding a staff member in front of us which wasn't pleasant for anyone. What a pity overall!

Yelp
Old grandeur on the Rimini waterfront. Probably absolutely buzzing in summer, but in late autumn gave a more haunted experience.
