Grand Hotel Tien-Shan

What a great and convenient hotel. Located smack in the center of Almaty, surrounded by post-Soviet and European architecture which makes it more alluring. It's my second time in Almaty as I missed the city a lot, and it's my first time visiting Almaty during winter. That said, this hotel impressed me due to its "old" charm, though the hotel I believe is built after KZ independence. First, the room that I was appointed to is their most basic room for a single or double occupancy. All furnishings are wooden, providing a venerable or rustic feel. The room has a high ceiling - quite refreshing as most modern or newly built hotels have average or low ceilings in order to cut on construction costs. Second, the breakfast restaurant is very cozy - plenty of space to move around, even when sitting. Furniture is nice, plush, comfortable. You can lounge the entire morning here if you don't have anything to do :) Third, the breakfast spread is quite nice, considering that this is a 4 star hotel. My favorite are the Russian style pancakes and the assorted salads with cheese. The dessert section has plenty of options as well. I guess the only downside (and I won't consider it a negative) is its single elevator of lift. I understand that it is only a 3 storey hotel, but the size of the hotel is still big. I may be mistaken, but the number of rooms per floor is around 60. Overall, it gets my recommendation.

We were looking for a place in the heart of the city and found this beautiful hotel. The hotel is equipped with the best services be it the morning breakfast buffet or swimming pool or hamaam!! The staff is courteous and welcoming. The rooms are big and cosy. Makes you feel homely after a tiring day!! The spa services are one of the best I have experienced in my trips in India and abroad!! A must visit!

It is located centrally, enabling travellers to have easy assess to connecting public bus services, subways, walking distance to nearby eateries, restaurants, the famous Green Bazaar and the sceneic, spacious park that housed the famous Zenkov Cathedral!All the staffs were amazing, from the frontline to the housekeeping and managers on duty. They communicated well, speak good English, and were extremely patient and helpful in answering my questions about the hotel facilities, going to certain places, etc.Although the breakfast food selection is not much, it was still outstanding - the bread were fresh, the coffee selection is excellent, fresh cut fruits, and these were sufficient to fill my appetite during my stay for the breakfast!I would definitely recommend travellers and visitors to Almaty to consider staying at the Grand Tien Shan hotel, its a "GRAND" feeling you wouldn't want to miss! Enjoy!

Overall, the hotel was pretty good, with nice big clean rooms and friendly staff. Breakfast was also good. The location is convenient to the downtown district and attractions. But, the place also has several flaws that detracted. The TV was fuzzy and difficult to tune in properly. The shower was truly lousy. The lighting in the room was poor. The bed was OK, but too soft for my comfort. Overall, OK, but pricey for what you get.

I booked this hotel some 4 months prior to our arrival and never changed it. I was perfectly right - hotel is in a great location in the very center, close to main attractions which can be reached on foot. Lobby is nice and beautifully decorated. Check in was fast by kind staff. Our room was very spacious set on the corner of the building. Very good bedding and spacious bathroom. The only thing that should be improved are the blinding curtains that should be installed on windows. Breakfast was very good and varied. Best of all was the Spa area with swimming pool, sauna and Hammam. It's open from 8.00 to 23.00, free to use and without previous appointment. Pool is fair in size to swim, with perfect water temperature. Special thanks I would like to express the front desk staff and management who didn't charge us our first night we were not able to show up due to Qatar Airways connecting flight late arrival. We were rebooked for the flight next day. For the same reason we were sorry staying here only one night (instead of two booked), but for sure we will use this hotel next time when in Almaty

We stayed at Grand Tien Shan as a family of 4. We booked two rooms and they both were very comfortable. When we arrived a couple of hours earlier than the check in time, the receptionist has kindly checked us in early into one of the rooms. Denis from the Front Desk was phenomenal at explaining us the history of the hotel building and all the facilities offered at the hotel. The rooms are spacious and clean, the beds comfortable. Breakfast offers various options and is tasty. Coffee is fantastic. The Spa deserves a separate mention. The staff is very kind and accommodating. They help you to arrange massage according to your needs and schedule. All four of us got a massage and we all were very impressed by the skills and professionalism of the masseuses. We regretted we didn’t have massages in our first day. The swimming pools are clean and nice size, 3 different spas were amazing as well. The only facility at the hotel that requires attention is the restaurant. The waiting staff is not well trained, slow to respond and not attentive in general. We had dinner at the restaurant once and the food was not tasty at all. I recommend the F&B Manager to take a closer look at the restaurant operations. Overall, we’ve had a great impression of the hotel and its convenient central location and will definitely stay there again at our next visit to Almaty.

The hotel is indeed 3+ stars, but spa salon and breakfast will let you rest and feel as if it is a 5 star hotel at the end of our stay. Rooms are quite old, but authentic and clean. The breakfast is from 7 am and is very good including eggs, ham and cheese choice, jogurt, salads etc. The team is smiling and helpful. Spa is wonderful after the long flight with a swimming pool and relaxing massage. Yahoo taxi is about 30 minutes drive from the airport. I truly recommend this hotel for short business stays for good sleep and rest.
