How to Plan the Perfect Ski Trip to Zell am See, Austria

"This historic four-star hotel sits directly on the lakefront and blends old-school elegance with modern amenities: guests can indulge in spa treatments or relax in the sauna and steam bath after skiing, and the property includes two restaurants while its central lakeside location makes it easy to explore the town for bites and drinks." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. The hotel was supposed to be the best in the area. Their attitude was good — from the doorman to the reception staff to the waiters, everyone behaved professionally. The location is excellent, right on the lake and close to downtown, which has all the restaurants. Breakfast was good, and the view from the breakfast area was amazing. The hotel also looks nice from the outside, with a very historical style. However, the hotel itself is very old, and the furniture feels cheap. They could have preserved the historical charm in a nicer way. Check-out is at 10:30 a.m., which I find unreasonable. The rooms are small and outdated, and the bathroom is in poor condition — even the tiles look cheap, and the vanity was cracked. When I asked for an iron, I was told it was prohibited. Not all rooms have air conditioning, and in our case, even though our room had one, it didn’t work properly. The bed and pillows were uncomfortable. Based on my personal experience, I would not return to this hotel. For the amount I paid, I don’t feel I got my money’s worth.

Just got back from a splendid week in this lakeside hotel. we booked through TUI and all the flights and connections arrived on time. The hotel is well appointed with plenty of attentive staff. Our room (on the 5th floor) overlooked the lake and was spacious and comfortable. (Even had a settee!) the room was cleaned and had new linen daily. The dining room is large and very well furnished with charming waiting staff and excellent food. - I loved the breakfasts. Zell itself is a small lake side town with nice shops. One thing you're not told is that you're given a 'travel pass' which means free (yes free!) bus and train journeys and a reduction, usually about 10% for the ski lifts. Its always possible to pick holes in any place but in general I had a great time here, in spite of some noisy trains! All the staff speak good English but learning a few German phrases is always a good plan (you're not required to learn the finer points of german grammar!) Did I enjoy it here? Yes! Would I go again? Yes!

We had such a lovely stay at the Grand Hotel Zell am See. The hotel has a really charming, traditional Austrian feel to it, with a beautiful lakeside location and amazing views in every direction. Our room was clean, comfortable, and perfect for a family — we especially enjoyed waking up to that stunning scenery each morning. The food was another highlight — breakfast had loads of choice, and the evening meals were delicious, with something different each night and friendly, attentive service that made it feel like a treat. One of the main reasons we chose this hotel was because of the kids’ club, which meant we could enjoy some relaxing time in the amazing Grand Spa — or just some much-needed adult time — while the children were happily entertained. Diane, who runs the club, was absolutely fantastic. She’s so kind, patient, friendly, and great fun — our children absolutely adored her. They loved every minute with her and were always asking to go back each day. In fact, they never wanted to leave when it was time to close! Diane also went out of her way to help us with ideas for things to do and places to visit in the area — she was just so helpful and genuinely wanted us to have the best experience possible. Thank you, Diane, for making the holiday so special for our whole family. You really made a lasting impression, and we’re so grateful. We had a great time and would love to come back again.

I was, and still am, completely in love with this hotel. The room was HUGE, with an amazing view of the lake. We were welcomed with welcome drinks, and were able to enjoy a fire in our hotel room! Breakfast, dinner, and an afternoon snack are provided. If I’m being honest, the snack is honestly big enough that you could get by with only eating food from this hotel. I really enjoyed the food, too, especially breakfast. The hotel is located right next to the town, and within a seven minute walk of the train stop. I highly, highly recommend this hotel.

We recently returned to the Grand Hotel Zell am See to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary, having been married there in 2000. Back then, we set off from the hotel on a boat across the lake, a moment captured in all our wedding photos. We’re not sure why it took us so long to return, but we’re so glad we finally did as it was every bit as magical as we remembered.||The hotel itself is stunningly beautiful, with a sense of old world charm and elegance. It has many grand original features that give it a traditional and authentic feel, yet it also feels wonderfully luxurious and welcoming. There’s something very special about stepping into a hotel that feels both timeless and full of heart.||The food was exceptional and the service was consistently fantastic. Patricia the restaurant manager went out of her way to always get us a table with a lake view and reserved us a wonderful table for our anniversary dinner. All of the restaurant staff were amazing, but one young man in particular, Enis, really stood out. He was always smiling, fun, and full of energy an absolute joy to see each day. In fact, the customer service across the entire hotel was the best we’ve experienced in years.||A special mention also to the fabulous bar team, Nina and Joseph, who were not only professional and attentive but also incredibly warm, friendly, and a genuine pleasure to talk to. The energy and kindness of the staff alone would make us want to return they really made our anniversary feel special.||On the Friday night of our stay, the live singers were outstanding, and they even did a dedicated anniversary song for us, a lovely and memorable touch.||This trip has truly changed how we want to holiday in the future. We found the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation, exploring new places while also soaking up the peaceful surroundings.||Some highlights of our stay included:|•Sigmund Thun Gorge - incredibly beautiful and dramatic.| •A boat trip and walks around the lake at Zell am See.|•The cable car to Schmittenhöhe - breathtaking views. |•An accidental but wonderful visit to Kaprun Dam far more scenic and serene than we expected|•A day at Tauern Spa – total relaxation.| •A trip to Innsbruck, and many bus, bike and train rides through the most jaw dropping scenery.||Thank you to everyone at the Grand Hotel for making this such a special and memorable return. We absolutely will be back again, much sooner this time. ||Love, ||Caroline & Paul|Steventon.

Wife and I love Austria and chose the Grand in Zell am See and we were delighted with our choice after 2 fantastic weeks here. We booked a DBB package through TUI and we couldn't have been happier with our choice of hotel. We had a small issue with our room on arrival and was quickly rectified by Miriam in reception, all of the reception staff were very friendly and helpful at all times. The breakfast buffet was outstanding with a huge choice of foods to suit anyone. Dinner again was superb, the flavour combinations were simply a delight and it is obvious the kitchen brigade are well led the the Head Chef. The main thing that makes the hotel is the staff, at all times the restaurant and bar staff were so friendly and professional they really made our stay very memorable. I would like to thank Rimi, Mirza, Lucian, Tara, Kira, Ivan, Julia, Enis, Marko, Vivian. Mr Chris in the morning with Norbert the breakfast chef who were all a great asset to the hotel. Thank you to all the staff once again

Excellent location! Beautiful hotel with very friendly and polite staff. The room was clean with a stunning view from the balcony. There is no air con but this is mentioned on their website so no complaints. The food was beyond expectation with breakfast choice to suit everyone. Dinner was 5 courses with a choice within each course. The service was pleasantly not rushed ( like in some restaurants) and a special thank you to Filip and Laila for exceptional service!

This hotel has its charm for rustic vibes. But this also meant that the hardware is in a need of makeover. The rooms and bed is clean and comfortable, the view waking up to is magnificent. And that is about it. Things are falling apart within the room. Service level is top notch, despite the staff being overwhelmed, they still maintain the level of service. All the staff is well trained and take serious pride in their job which i applaud for. To travellers who is travelling to zell am see, there is no authenticity vibes, it is more like a arab town now.

Yelp
wonderful experience... we were there at the end of october, during the off-season, and were able to enjoy the Grand Hotel at a very reasonable rate. Room was wonderful, with a great view. Breakfast was good, dinner was outstanding. Staff was great.

Yelp
Wonderfully central, excellent views across the lake. Suite is very well equipped, upstairs bathroom has a sauna - nice touch! Food had been excellent, and the staff attentive.
