How to Plan the Perfect Ski Trip to Zell am See, Austria

"This historic four-star hotel sits directly on the lakefront and blends old-school elegance with modern amenities: guests can indulge in spa treatments or relax in the sauna and steam bath after skiing, and the property includes two restaurants while its central lakeside location makes it easy to explore the town for bites and drinks." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. The hotel was supposed to be the best in the area. Their attitude was good — from the doorman to the reception staff to the waiters, everyone behaved professionally. The location is excellent, right on the lake and close to downtown, which has all the restaurants. Breakfast was good, and the view from the breakfast area was amazing. The hotel also looks nice from the outside, with a very historical style. However, the hotel itself is very old, and the furniture feels cheap. They could have preserved the historical charm in a nicer way. Check-out is at 10:30 a.m., which I find unreasonable. The rooms are small and outdated, and the bathroom is in poor condition — even the tiles look cheap, and the vanity was cracked. When I asked for an iron, I was told it was prohibited. Not all rooms have air conditioning, and in our case, even though our room had one, it didn’t work properly. The bed and pillows were uncomfortable. Based on my personal experience, I would not return to this hotel. For the amount I paid, I don’t feel I got my money’s worth.

Just back from an absolutely wonderful week at the Grand Hotel. There are so many positives it’s hard to know where to start.|The location is picture perfect, right on the lake, so that almost all the rooms have the most breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains. . Yet it is also just yards from the town so very convenient. The train station is also nearby and there is noise from the trains but one quickly gets so used to it that it’s barely there.|The decor of the hotel is very elegant and classy, almost from a bygone age although certainly somewhat dated. A refresh of curtains and soft furnishings would be an improvement. Some of the ‘comfort rooms’ are also quite dated but are still spacious and very clean, but if you can, try to get one of the superior ones, although the website is really not very clear on exactly what each room is like, so probably best to speak directly to the hotel. The hotel is spotlessly clean and well maintained which is a feat in itself considering its size. ||The staff must get a special mention. Every single one was pleasant and helpful, solving any problem immediately. We had a slight issue with the room we had been given which was cheerfully resolved with an absolutely wonderful upgrade - thank you so much!|Special mention to the dining room staff who were just lovely, most especially Filip and above all Leyla who is an absolute credit to the hotel with her wonderful welcoming smile at the entrance to the dining room. She made every single person feel special, especially the children. She truly deserves promotion!||The food was outstanding. A breakfast buffet consisting of just about every possible thing you could want, a 5 course evening meal with a choice of 3 items for every course, and all beautifully presented.|There are numerous areas to just sit and relax and enjoy the view, especially the lovely lakeside terrace in the gardens and the upstairs terrace where those on half board can enjoy some tasty snacks and cakes in the afternoon- free of charge!|The hotel is spotlessly clean and well maintained which is a feat in itself considering its size. |We really hope to return next year and would highly recommend this lovely hotel. Cheap it is not but a wonderful relaxing ambiance and good value for money.

My husband and I enjoyed our stay. They have a wonderful breakfast buffet, a charming lake- side dining terrace. We had a room with a large balcony and a beautiful view of the lake. It was a great location with a short walk into town and to the train station.

We have recently returned from a wonderful week staying at The Grand Hotel to celebrate our 39th Wedding Anniversary. This is our 2nd stay at this Beautiful hotel.|We stayed in room 439 which we had stayed the previous year, which has the most Amazing Lake views. We requested this room for the many different view angles, Stunning Lake views with mountain backdrop, the little Town on our right with its old Church steeple with the sound of the church bells ringing over the lake was so pleasant, the balcony was the perfect place to absorb the atmosphere and to people watch with a nice Cocktail. |The Hotel has so much character and oozes charm, it is definitely from a past era that is so hard to find now days. The Grand has so much History which makes it so unique.||Breakfast is superb, with a huge variety of absolutely everything, omelette station made to your request, we could not fault it. A special mention to the restaurant staff, Leyla, Philipe, and Marko, who always made us very welcome and were excellent at hospitality. Nothing was too much trouble.|The Evening Menu was also superb and presented beautifully, the infused flavours in the dishes that were created was exceptional. A Huge Thank you to the chef who we did not see to thank him personally. The devil is definitely in the detail where his menu is concerned. I have read a few comments regarding the lack of air con and the trains, Personally for us it was so not an issue, we slept with the balcony doors wide open to absorb the aroma of mountainous Alpine Fresh Air and the trains never disturbed our sleep.|The Grounds and Garden are beautifully maintained, lovely indoor pool and spa which overlooks the lake. There is so much to this hotel and the Staff do an Amazing job.|Make use of the Travel card , Transport is free on trains and buses and discounts for the ski lifts.|If you are looking for a hotel that is symmetrical in all they do then The Grand is not for you.|If you are looking for a Hotel with Charm, Stunning Views, Beautiful quality food and a Location that is second to none then this is the one.|Thanks to all of the staff for making our stay truly memorable .||We hope to return next year to Celebrate our Ruby Wedding Anniversary in our Happy Place The Grand.

We have just celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary here and what a fabulous hotel it is. The only reason I do not give 5*'s is that the rooms are dated. This did not, however, spoil our stay there.||It is a very grand, classy hotel in the most beautiful location. The terraces leading from both the restaurant and the bar are a wonderful place to sit with a coffee or a drink. Nina, in the bar, was especially good at her job; always chatty, smiling and bubbly.||In fact the staff are all very friendly - from reception, to bar, to restaurant, to cleaning staff - rooms are serviced every day with clean towels etc.||The restaurant is so lovely and with a view over the lake. The food is excellent quality, cooked and presented beautifully, with plenty of choice. The restaurant staff are a credit to the hotel - especially Leila and husband Filip. They were so friendly, very professional, and made us feel like we really were their favourite guests! Leila is superb as front of house and Philip so attentive and good with the wine choices.||On the lake there is a lovely fountain display on each hour; and 3 times a weeks, after dark, the most amazing light and sound display. The shops, bars and restaurants of the small town are just across the road, so a perfect location.

Just got back from a splendid week in this lakeside hotel. we booked through TUI and all the flights and connections arrived on time. The hotel is well appointed with plenty of attentive staff. Our room (on the 5th floor) overlooked the lake and was spacious and comfortable. (Even had a settee!) the room was cleaned and had new linen daily. The dining room is large and very well furnished with charming waiting staff and excellent food. - I loved the breakfasts. Zell itself is a small lake side town with nice shops. One thing you're not told is that you're given a 'travel pass' which means free (yes free!) bus and train journeys and a reduction, usually about 10% for the ski lifts. Its always possible to pick holes in any place but in general I had a great time here, in spite of some noisy trains! All the staff speak good English but learning a few German phrases is always a good plan (you're not required to learn the finer points of german grammar!) Did I enjoy it here? Yes! Would I go again? Yes!

Hotel is right on the Lake, absolutely beautiful. We loved our balcony room, wandering round the gardens and enjoying a free pedalo, Frizell. Staff are absolutely wonderful, Tara, big Ivan, Filip, Layla, Imad, the older man with white hair and the young girl in training whose name I just can't remember and everyone else, especially in the dining room. Food was great, 5 courses every night in such a stunning dining room. Afternoon snack is a brilliant idea and so welcomed. Spa pool and jacuzzi are lovely. The town of Zell is charming and quaint and seconds from the hotel. I did feel that the Arab restaurants ruined the traditional Austrian feel of the town a bit. Some improvements that could be made: carpet in the bedroom was really needing renewed, some more chicken on the dinner menu, check out time could be a bit later, saunas in the main building should be working every day. Overall, a wonderful holiday and we have booked to return in May.

I was, and still am, completely in love with this hotel. The room was HUGE, with an amazing view of the lake. We were welcomed with welcome drinks, and were able to enjoy a fire in our hotel room! Breakfast, dinner, and an afternoon snack are provided. If I’m being honest, the snack is honestly big enough that you could get by with only eating food from this hotel. I really enjoyed the food, too, especially breakfast. The hotel is located right next to the town, and within a seven minute walk of the train stop. I highly, highly recommend this hotel.

Yelp
wonderful experience... we were there at the end of october, during the off-season, and were able to enjoy the Grand Hotel at a very reasonable rate. Room was wonderful, with a great view. Breakfast was good, dinner was outstanding. Staff was great.

Yelp
Wonderfully central, excellent views across the lake. Suite is very well equipped, upstairs bathroom has a sauna - nice touch! Food had been excellent, and the staff attentive.
