How to Plan the Perfect Ski Trip to Zell am See, Austria

"This historic four-star hotel sits directly on the lakefront and blends old-school elegance with modern amenities: guests can indulge in spa treatments or relax in the sauna and steam bath after skiing, and the property includes two restaurants while its central lakeside location makes it easy to explore the town for bites and drinks." - Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca Stacey Leasca is an award-winning journalist and co-founder of Be a Travel Writer, an online course for the next generation of travel journalists. The hotel has a perfect location right in the city center, making it very easy to walk everywhere. It was also easy to find and access upon arrival.||The hotel is very clean, including the rooms and the bathroom, which were spotless and well maintained. The room was designed exactly as expected and very comfortable. Initially, the room was missing a telephone and a TV remote control, but these were provided shortly after, and everything was perfect afterward.||The staff were outstanding—especially the restaurant team, who were extremely kind, professional, and welcoming. The restaurant offered an excellent atmosphere, and the food was exceptionally good, with outstanding quality and taste.||What I enjoyed the most was the breathtaking view. The view from the room, the pool, and the restaurant was absolutely amazing and truly unforgettable.||Overall, a wonderful stay with an excellent location, exceptional staff, delicious food, and stunning views. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

We chose this hotel for our ski vacation and New Year's celebration and have only good things to say about our stay. Other than the need of a bit of renovation, the hotel is fantastic - olden charm, location, views, spa areas, the food was good and the staff were professional and friendly. We also had some delicious cocktails at the bar. The New Year's celebrations were perfectly organized with lots of activities, live music and amazing fireworks over the lake - it was like a fairytale. Our kids had a birthday during our stay and the hotel personnel surprised us with cake and balloons, which made our stay even more amazing. Wishing the entire staff of the hotel a very happy new year!!!

The hotel offers elegant rooms with stunning views of the lake and surrounding Alps, combining classic charm with modern comfort. Guests can enjoy a full-service spa, indoor pool, fine dining restaurants, and easy access to outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking, and boating. Its prime location and high-quality services make it an ideal choice for both relaxation and adventure year-round.

The hotel was supposed to be the best in the area. Their attitude was good — from the doorman to the reception staff to the waiters, everyone behaved professionally. The location is excellent, right on the lake and close to downtown, which has all the restaurants. Breakfast was good, and the view from the breakfast area was amazing. The hotel also looks nice from the outside, with a very historical style. However, the hotel itself is very old, and the furniture feels cheap. They could have preserved the historical charm in a nicer way. Check-out is at 10:30 a.m., which I find unreasonable. The rooms are small and outdated, and the bathroom is in poor condition — even the tiles look cheap, and the vanity was cracked. When I asked for an iron, I was told it was prohibited. Not all rooms have air conditioning, and in our case, even though our room had one, it didn’t work properly. The bed and pillows were uncomfortable. Based on my personal experience, I would not return to this hotel. For the amount I paid, I don’t feel I got my money’s worth.

Just back from an absolutely wonderful week at the Grand Hotel. There are so many positives it’s hard to know where to start.|The location is picture perfect, right on the lake, so that almost all the rooms have the most breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding mountains. . Yet it is also just yards from the town so very convenient. The train station is also nearby and there is noise from the trains but one quickly gets so used to it that it’s barely there.|The decor of the hotel is very elegant and classy, almost from a bygone age although certainly somewhat dated. A refresh of curtains and soft furnishings would be an improvement. Some of the ‘comfort rooms’ are also quite dated but are still spacious and very clean, but if you can, try to get one of the superior ones, although the website is really not very clear on exactly what each room is like, so probably best to speak directly to the hotel. The hotel is spotlessly clean and well maintained which is a feat in itself considering its size. ||The staff must get a special mention. Every single one was pleasant and helpful, solving any problem immediately. We had a slight issue with the room we had been given which was cheerfully resolved with an absolutely wonderful upgrade - thank you so much!|Special mention to the dining room staff who were just lovely, most especially Filip and above all Leyla who is an absolute credit to the hotel with her wonderful welcoming smile at the entrance to the dining room. She made every single person feel special, especially the children. She truly deserves promotion!||The food was outstanding. A breakfast buffet consisting of just about every possible thing you could want, a 5 course evening meal with a choice of 3 items for every course, and all beautifully presented.|There are numerous areas to just sit and relax and enjoy the view, especially the lovely lakeside terrace in the gardens and the upstairs terrace where those on half board can enjoy some tasty snacks and cakes in the afternoon- free of charge!|The hotel is spotlessly clean and well maintained which is a feat in itself considering its size. |We really hope to return next year and would highly recommend this lovely hotel. Cheap it is not but a wonderful relaxing ambiance and good value for money.

My husband and I enjoyed our stay. They have a wonderful breakfast buffet, a charming lake- side dining terrace. We had a room with a large balcony and a beautiful view of the lake. It was a great location with a short walk into town and to the train station.

We have just celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary here and what a fabulous hotel it is. The only reason I do not give 5*'s is that the rooms are dated. This did not, however, spoil our stay there.||It is a very grand, classy hotel in the most beautiful location. The terraces leading from both the restaurant and the bar are a wonderful place to sit with a coffee or a drink. Nina, in the bar, was especially good at her job; always chatty, smiling and bubbly.||In fact the staff are all very friendly - from reception, to bar, to restaurant, to cleaning staff - rooms are serviced every day with clean towels etc.||The restaurant is so lovely and with a view over the lake. The food is excellent quality, cooked and presented beautifully, with plenty of choice. The restaurant staff are a credit to the hotel - especially Leila and husband Filip. They were so friendly, very professional, and made us feel like we really were their favourite guests! Leila is superb as front of house and Philip so attentive and good with the wine choices.||On the lake there is a lovely fountain display on each hour; and 3 times a weeks, after dark, the most amazing light and sound display. The shops, bars and restaurants of the small town are just across the road, so a perfect location.

The location of this hotel is excellent — right on the lake, with stunning views and easy access to the town. Unfortunately, that’s where the positives mostly end. The hotel itself feels like it hasn’t been updated in over 20 years. The décor is dated, the furniture tired, and the whole place gives off a worn, neglected vibe. My room was dusty, with obvious signs that housekeeping had missed details. The check-in process was frustratingly slow, setting the tone for the rest of the stay. Once inside, it became clear this is not a modern luxury experience. The food was one of the biggest disappointments — bland, poorly prepared, and in some cases nearly inedible. I expected so much more from a property with this reputation. To be fair, the grounds themselves are well maintained, and the gardens and lakeside setting are very enjoyable. Some staff members tried to be helpful, but the service overall lacked polish and efficiency. This could be a truly special hotel if it received the investment it desperately needs. As it stands, the only thing saving it from a worse rating is the location and the outdoor setting. I left feeling extremely let down and would not return.

Yelp
wonderful experience... we were there at the end of october, during the off-season, and were able to enjoy the Grand Hotel at a very reasonable rate. Room was wonderful, with a great view. Breakfast was good, dinner was outstanding. Staff was great.

Yelp
Wonderfully central, excellent views across the lake. Suite is very well equipped, upstairs bathroom has a sauna - nice touch! Food had been excellent, and the staff attentive.
