"Opened in 2016 in the luxe Barra da Tijuca neighborhood, the Grand HyattRio de Janeirois a modern beach resort away from the tourist hordes. Designed by the international hospitality firm Yabu Pushelburg, which has partnered with many of the world’s top hotel brands, the Grand Hyatt delivers a boutique feel with all the amenities of a world-class hotel. Spacious guest rooms feature balconies overlooking the Atlantic Ocean or Marapendi Lagoon as well as soaking tubs, separate rain showers, and locally made Granado toiletries. The subterranean spa and fitness center is extensive, with nine treatment rooms, a yoga studio, and steam rooms, while dining options include a Japanese grill, an Italian restaurant, and a Brazilian spot, each surrounding the large pool and lush gardens. While Copacabana and Sugarloaf Mountain can be an hour away by taxi in traffic, Barra offers plenty of high-end shopping and dining along its long, less-crowded stretch of beach."

Hyatt Offers Free COVID Testing at Mexico, Caribbean Hotels - AFAR

"Through May 31, 2021 this resort is offering complimentary on-site COVID-19 testing (PCR or rapid antigen) for up to two registered guests per room to help travelers meet the U.S. CDC's pretravel testing requirement of a negative test within 72 hours. Complimentary tests require a minimum length of stay that varies by property and additional on-property tests can be purchased. If a guest tests positive and must delay travel, participating properties generally allow extended stays of up to 14 additional nights at a travel-delay rate of up to 50% off the standard room rate and up to 30% off food and beverage (excluding alcohol). Complimentary testing is only available to guests traveling to the United States, and the company says it plans to expand testing availability across the Americas and globally." - Michelle Baran

Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro (Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro State) 5 Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"For a city with such a glamorous reputation, Rio de Janeiro comes up surprisingly short when it comes to high-end hotels. Sure, there are the classic beachfront landmarks — the historic Belmond Copacabana Palace and the sultry Fasano — and a few perfectly lovely boutique hotels tucked into the hills of Santa Teresa. But it’s hardly enough to keep up with the ever-growing numbers of discerning travelers descending on the cidade maravilhosa. Luckily, the Hyatt brand is getting into the game, adding hundreds of new hotel rooms into the mix." - Tablet Hotels

We had an unforgettable stay in a Suite! The spacious apartment was impeccably clean, beautifully designed, and thoughtfully equipped down to the smallest detail. The club system was a true highlight for those who appreciate comfort: private check-in, exclusive lounge with drinks and snacks, and personalized service. The Japanese restaurant on-site deserves special praise. Exquisite dishes prepared with authentic techniques, the freshest seafood, and flawless service created an atmosphere of true Japan. The only downside is that it’s located far from the city center. However, even that turned out to be a plus — peace, quiet, and serenity far from the hustle and bustle. We will definitely return and highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a premium getaway and exceptional Japanese cuisine!

Excellent property located right across from Barra da Tijuca beach, with restaurants and a pharmacy nearby. Good to know: Just outside the hotel, you’ll find a beachfront running path—8 km out and 8 km back. The hotel also offers a boat tour through the surrounding nature reserve, available only on Tuesdays and Saturdays and requiring advance booking. The Lounge is a great option, offering both breakfast and a variety of snacks and dinner dishes. Although the hotel faces the beach and offers beach service, swimming wasn’t possible during our stay due to constant red flags. So while beach access exists, this doesn’t quite feel like a true beach hotel in practice. What could be improved: There’s a noticeable lack of clear communication between hotel departments. Throughout our stay, we had to follow up multiple times with housekeeping and reception for additional services, even though we always went through the front desk. We mentioned this to the manager, Raquel, who was very kind and supportive, but the system overall could be more efficient to deliver a seamless guest experience. The quality of alcoholic drinks and cocktails in the Lounge was not on par with those at the main bar—something that should be addressed. Having a bartender assigned to the Lounge might solve this. Also, the coffee machines—both in the Lounge and the main breakfast area—looked modern but produced weak coffee and were difficult to use. It might be worth considering a barista during breakfast hours. What stood out: The breakfast was exceptional in both variety and quality. Everything tasted delicious, and the kitchen staff were incredibly friendly. A special thanks to Chef Patricia, who treated us like friends m. She not only kept the buffet well-stocked and organized but also greeted us warmly every day, radiating positive energy.

First time staying here at the grand Hyatt rio and it was a great experience. Very tidy and quiet section of the beach away from the crowded areas further down. It was a bit out of the way so expect to pay a bit more to see the sight around rio by uber or taxi, a lot of tours don’t come to this hotel either it seems. When you come get access to the grand club at the top floor, great experience here, Alex at the grand club is great, really feels like he cares and goes above and beyond to make your experience here amazing. He deserves recognition really embodying what I would expect from this type of place. The food and drinks available here are excellent as are the amenities. I’m definitely coming back the next time I’m in rio.

We had a fantastic stay at the Grand Hyatt Rio de Janeiro! We decided to upgrade to a suite for access to the Club Lounge, and it was absolutely worth it. The lounge offered a delicious breakfast each morning with fresh fruit, pastries, and hot options, plus afternoon cocktails and snacks that were perfect for relaxing after a day out.||||One of the highlights was the beach service—the hotel provides towels, beach chairs, and umbrellas, which made our time on the beach incredibly comfortable and stress-free. The towel service was prompt and well-managed, and the staff made sure we were taken care of throughout the day.||||The combination of attentive service, thoughtful amenities, and a prime beachfront location really made this trip special. Highly recommend upgrading to enjoy all the extras the hotel has to offer! Looking forward to coming back next summer.

Everything about our stay at the Hyatt was absolutely on point. The food was excellent — fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented at every meal. They served the best pão de queijo in Rio at breakfast, and the room service was truly the best we've ever had.||The service was equally impressive; staff were attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome.||Our room was spotless, with a modern and elegant design that made it a true pleasure to relax in. The location is fantastic, calm family friendly area. Food was very good and fairly priced, alcoholic beverages were high quality and really cheap compared to the US. Rooms are very comfortable, high ceilings and electric black outs. ||Beach service was nice and polite, everyone seems to have an honest smile.

Yelp
If you go to Barra da Tijuca, you MUsT stay at the Grand Hyatt!! It is THE best hotel, with a resort feel! There are quite a few restaurants on the premises and they are not far from a variety of offsite restaurants and establishments. The rooms are absolutely amazing and super comfortable! They have electronic black out shades to keep the room completely dark, which was a great feature! Inside the hotel, they also have two pools, a spa, fitness center, etc. The food and staff are truly top-notch! The entire place is amazing and you will not regret staying here! Don't miss out on staying at this awesome hotel/resort!

Yelp
This was the scenario of the fantastic wedding of a couple of friends from San Francisco: the bride carioca, the groom Italian. They choose this hotel for the convenience of having us all in various hotels from Barra da Tijuca and for the easy access, beautiful grounds and fantastic service. Stellar service and hotel is modern looking and well taken care of. The pool area is chic and cozy and we all had a great time. Very recommendable for weddings.

Yelp
Pros: Good Wi-Fi Pool Gym Located Across the beach Cons: Too far from tourist spots Customer service was spotty with everything except the concierge Arrived via taxi from the airport. Check In was ok. They were a tad bit slow. The hotel itself is beautiful and clean. It looks very modern and up to par with grand hyatt standards The room: spacious with a nice balcony. We had a partial view of the beach. There's construction going on and there's a big building the blocks the view. We asked for a rollaway bed and it was there when we arrived. The beds and pillows were comfortable. The restroom is a bit odd. It has a huge, heavy door that you must slide back and forth when you have to go the bathroom or shower. It's very big, but I think it would have been nicer to have a door that shuts the toilet area off. The toiletries were the best. I loved the lavender scent and they weren't skimpy with them. The shower water pressure was adequate. I can't say the same about the sink water pressure. Sometimes it was a drip and sometimes a slow stream, but it always took forever to wash your hands. The mini bar has beer, water and soda. They have a nespresso machine and a tea kettle. I was very surprised they only gave us one mug to share between three of us while we were there. The pool was great. It's big and spacious. There's plenty of lounge chairs. They have waiter service. Pool towels are offered. There's a door that leads to the beach by the pool area. You need your key card to get in and out. Extras: - We waited 20 minutes for ice and it never came. No Ice machines available. - an iron and blow dryer are available in the room - the gym was excellent. Plenty of machines and treadmills. They offer towels and water. - a safe is available in the Room - the concierge was awesome. They helped me set up my driver and tour guide for day 1. Then they helped me buy train tickets to Christ the Redeemer. - If you want a snack or drink, they have a 24 hour store on the first floor. Do expect hotel prices. - we used Uber for everything since everything is so far away - they have Lounge chairs at the beach. They also have water available for you.

Yelp
A really great hotel with a friendly and supportive staff. The hotel is new and modern and even during a covid lock down the staff made sure we felt a minimal impact. They also do a good job taking care of their elites and special thanks to Denise and Felipe for taking such care of us! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Yelp
I stayed here in September and had a very nice time. The hotel is new in appearance but breaking down in many places. That being said, the staff was exceptional and went out of their way to solve problems (like my phone not working). I saw some reviews of the construction and out of the way location but I enjoy it being a little less crowded and the are a little less run down like Copacabana beach. I stayed elsewhere in my December trip but likely will be back to the Grand Hyatt the next one. Full disclosure, I was in a Oceanfront Suite in both and the room and balcony were very large. If it didn't have as many flaws as it has from wear and tear, I would have given it five stars for price and service. And a note to anyone, service is never fast in Rio. I recently stayed at the Fairmont Copacabana (doesn't exist on yelp) and it was more expensive. Copacabana isn't a great location and its spot on it is very loud with the historic port in front. The rooms were much smaller even at 50% more expensive and the food was very average.

Yelp
I have been to Rio de Janeiro over ten times, I love the city and lately I have been choosing Barra da Tijuca to stay. It is quieter, the beaches are broader and bigger, and the sea is much nicer than in Copacabana, Ipanema or Leblon. Barra da Tijuca is perfect for families or people looking to rest and/or piece and quiet. This is the first time we stayed at the Grand Hyatt, as it is pretty new. The facilities and the staff were great. The hotel is very modern, with clean and spacious rooms, great bathroom, shower and tub. Wifi connection is great, the pool is very nice, and it is right across from the beach. Breakfast is really really good. There are 3 very good restaurants in the hotel, a terrace that overlooks the city, all rooms have balconies. Ours was facing the pool and the ocean. The spa and the gym were really good too! They offer you bikes for free for an hour. Of course we already know our way around Rio by heart, but if you are looking to hang out in the heart of the city most of the time, keep in mind that it could take you anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour fifteen to get to Copacabana or Ipanema on public transportation, or 20/25 minutes if you rent a car or take an UBER, which by the way works perfectly in Rio. As far as restaurants around the area, you have a few good ones, but of course, not as many as in the heart of Rio (Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon). There are a couple of shopping malls about 7 minutes by UBER. Also, for the adventurers, there are a couple of beaches close to this area that are hidden gems in Rio... most tourists don't go there: PRAINHA and JOATINGA. So if you are looking for piece and quiet and to enjoy the beach staying in a great hotel, this is a great choice.

Yelp
I don't even know what the bad reviews are for! This hotel is absolutely beautiful. I'm American and the room was only $44 USD a night and absolutely incredibly high standards. If this hotel was back in the states, it would be $500 a night easily. Stunning ocean views, the staff was very kind and accommodating, pool is gorgeous, hotel is massive and they have several great restaurants. The spa was WONDERFUL too. Highly recommend for any Americans visiting. Made my visit to rio an absolute DELIGHT!

Yelp
This is the nicest hotel I have stayed at in my life and I stay in hotels as part of my occupation. The hospitality is incredible, personal and not at all automated as most hotels. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. With an ocean view room I left the door open all night and slept to the sounds of he ocean.

Yelp
This was a FABULOUS experience! We wanted a great beach, and while a little far from Ipanema and Copacabana, Barra da Tijuca offered our favorite beach in Rio. Victor and the hotel staff, despite being a huge hotel, make us feel at home, and the room was OUTSTANDING, spacious, and beautiful. The fitness center was outstanding, and my only regret was not going to the spa. Don't be thrown off that this hotel in not in downtown Rio- the beach and amenities of the hotel are worth it for a perfect experience!

Yelp
WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE. I waited at the pool for over an hour trying to order drinks, we asked the waiter for a menu over 10 times and never got one they kept saying they didn't speak English when I'm brazillian and speak fluent Portuguese. We asked for a bucket of beer and the waiter said they didn't have any left when 10 minutes later I saw at least 10 buckets walk past me. Since they didn't have any beer buckets I asked for the champagne menu and never got one so I got fed up and asked to speak to the manager I waited for over 30 minutes and he never showed up so I had to go to the lobby and speak to the manager. I spent 2 hours trying to get this resolved. I live in Florida where hospitality is a big deal and this was one of the worst hotels I've stayed at. I understand that it is New Year's Eve and they are busy but it's Rio de Janeiro and Hyatt a hotel with over 500 rooms should be equipped and ready to handle an influx of guest at the pool. If they can't service that many people maybe they shouldn't book all the rooms.I'm surely never staying here again. The manager of the hotel did a great job at helping us get situated and even gave us a bottle on the house. The only good thing A about this hotel was he manager.
