Yelp
My husband, toddler and I recently spent 5 nights at Grand Residences. It was a nice vacation but my expectations were high after reading so many rave reviews (4.5 stars on Yelp, a full 5 stars on that other travel review website) and our stay definitely fell far short of a 4.5-5 star experience. This should probably more accurately be 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding down since I believe the average star rating is inflated.
PROS:
-We splurged on a junior beachfront suite - it was beautifully appointed, plenty big for our family of three and had a great view of the ocean.
-Staff were really attentive and tried to be helpful, although they didn't always succeed (see below).
-Pools were nicely heated and had some shade in the afternoons; beach area was small but nice.
-This is the first time we've had a personal concierge and we liked that, and our concierge Gustavo was great.
-Very family-friendly for the most part - in addition to the standard pack-n-play, our room had a bottle sterilizer, diaper pail and high chair. We didn't need the sterilizer but other two items were very useful. Babies and toddlers are also welcome to go to the kids club if accompanied by an adult, and they have a nice assortment of activities for kids.
-Wristbands are your room keys and are waterproof - love that.
-Airport transfers are included and were very smooth.
-They have an afternoon tea service, which I really enjoyed - it's only a few days a week though, and books up well in advance.
-They have an on-site doctor, which came in handy when our toddler got a bad cold and we worried she might have an ear infection.
CONS:
-FOOD. The big one for us. We are food snobs and chose this resort specifically because so many reviews raved about the food. It might be good for an all-inclusive, but it's not good food (and possibly not even all that good for an AI - we have been to one other AI, Live Aqua Cancun, and that one had much better food). The breakfast buffets were nice, especially the croissants, which tasted just about as good as any I've had in France. But lunches and dinners were mediocre at best. In particular, the seafood I had didn't taste fresh, bread and chips were always stale, guacamole was no better than what you can buy at grocery stores in the US, the sandwiches and pizzas tasted liked bad cafeteria food and many of the pastas and risottos had no flavor except heavy cream. Room service was especially awful, some of the food we got from room service was barely edible. With only two formal restaurants and one casual beach bar on site, we also got bored of the food quickly (I knew going in that there were only two real restaurants, but I thought they'd have more variety in their menus - they each had a couple buffet theme nights, but each restaurant's a la carte menu, served 3-4 nights/week, remained the same for the duration of our stay. Room service also had a lot of overlap with the restaurant menus, not surprisingly).
-Staff was uniformly VERY friendly, but wasn't always the most competent. We were given misinformation about dinner when we arrived and there were a few other missteps (I received the wrong salad at dinner once, for example).
-Tiles at the pool were incredibly slippery when wet. Our toddler fell once but fortunately wasn't seriously injured. We were on the north side of the property and couldn't reach the restaurants/lobby without walking through the pool area. It rained occasionally during our stay, and one night we noticed them hosing down the pool deck at 7 pm - it seems so dangerous to make the pool deck wet when it's dark and people will be walking through there to get to/from dinner. I'd definitely recommend a room on the south side so you can reach your room without going through the pool area.
-Sunset catamaran cruise is adults only - understandable, but I wish they'd made that clear on their website, since they're otherwise so family friendly.
-Resort credits can't be used for anything except premium beverages and the spa, so if you don't care about those things they have limited value (they didn't let us apply them to our toddler's doctor's visit, which wasn't a huge shock, but it would have been really nice if they had). We had $150 of resort credits and a 60 minute massage was $160 - the idea of using even $10 of my own money irritated me, so I got a 30 minute foot massage and a 30 minute back massage for $65 each (kind of weird that the shorter massages are cheaper per minute, but whatever). The massages were nice.
-We never got turndown service, despite telling several people our preferred time for it, which was a bit of a bummer. Many other reviews mentioned little gifts like animal figurines that I bet my daughter would have enjoyed. Housekeeping also never refilled our mini-bar that we raided on the first day when we arrived at the resort starving.
We had a nice family vacation, but I wouldn't return and I think you can do better for the price, especially if you care about food.
