Was a grand hotel with a good price. All staff friendly and helpful, receptionist when we arrived mapped out sites we should visit. The room size was was fine clean and well maintained. You do have to pay for the coffee 1.25 erous for a pod downside is no milk and 0nly small cups available. The public rooms were all beautiful and a pleasure to use. The windsor bar made delicious cocktails. Breakfast again in a grand room, staff attentive, food fresh, hot and delicious with a good choice. Situation great, 20 minute walk up from the river which was a climb but you could break it up . It is central, 5 mins from the market which is a must. Capel ash Alma's which again is a must beautiful blue tiled chapel. Plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes nearby. Recommend the one opposite can't remember the name it is a green restaurant, cakes in the front then opens into a large restaurant. Good size menu, meat, fish and vegetarian delicious. Self service, good atmosphere. Also ate in Bolhao a gusto. There is Majestic cafe just down from hotel which is famous art deco building but very busy. Would recommend and happily stay again

Stopped here for city break and was blown away how grand the hotel was. The door way was small then it opens up. Beautiful public rooms which have beautiful seating which we used having our last drink from the bar. Beautiful cocktail's made freshly. Our room was big enough for us with very high ceilings. We were at the back so quiet. Clean and well maintained. You are charged for the coffees you use 1.25 a euro each, down size no milk and very small cups. Breakfast was buffet style, nice choice all hot and freshly renewed as required. Attentive staff. Would recommend this hotel, positioned well for the market which is a must to go to. Lovely restaurants and cafes nearby .It is about a 20 minute walk up from the river. Restaurants would recommend the one opposite . Can't remember the full name but it is a green restaurant. Busy, self service, cakes in the front then opens up to a big restaurant. Good choice on menu of meat, fish and vegetarian. Food delicious and we had a very tasty wine and all was reasonably priced. Also we ate at Bolhao a gusto. It is a climb from the river but only about 20 minutes walk.

This hotel is excellent value for money. The whole hotel is immaculate and the staff helpful and friendly. Breakfast is what I’d expected for a 3 star hotel. Yes the rooms are small but it didn’t bother us as we were out all day exploring. The rooms are very clean and beds comfortable. Great location. All our party would stay again.

I had a truly pleasant stay at this hotel. From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel welcome with their warm and professional service. Every request was handled promptly and with a smile, which made my experience even more enjoyable. The room was exceptionally clean and well-maintained, with fresh linens and a comfortable bed that guaranteed a good night’s sleep. I also appreciated the attention to detail in the common areas — everything was spotless and well-organized. Overall, the combination of excellent service, cleanliness, and a welcoming atmosphere makes this hotel a place I would gladly recommend and revisit in the future.

I stayed with my family for 3 nights at the Grand Hotel do Porto. While the location is quite good (right in the city center), it’s still about a 20-minute walk to Ribeira. The family room was also quite small — around 20 sqm — which felt tight for four people.||Breakfast was very average for Portugal; in my opinion, not great either.||The real disappointment, however, came from two incidents. First, when we arrived, the room was only partially prepared. The sofa bed for my daughters was not made, and when I informed reception around 9–10 PM, the lady told me that housekeeping had already left and nothing could be done. I explained that our booking had been made well in advance and the room should have been ready. Eventually, another staff member from reception kindly helped to convert the sofa into a bed himself — asking me to assist, as he couldn’t manage it alone.||Second — and most concerning — my iPhone charging cable disappeared from my MacBook charger during the stay. I’m 100% sure it was there when we left the room in the morning, as I had just disconnected my daughter’s phone from it. Other chargers (my wife’s iPhone charger, watch chargers, etc.) were untouched, but the iPhone cable was gone when we returned.||When I reported this to reception, the staff member was very cold and unhelpful, suggesting I check under the bed or around the room. I insisted they speak with housekeeping, but the attitude remained indifferent. In the end, nothing was found and no effort was made to take responsibility or even show empathy.||Overall, the location is fine, but the service and attitude of the staff were well below expectations. Unfortunately, I would not stay here again or recommend it to others.

Stayed for one night prior to a week long Douro River cruise on a group tour so that I could explore the area a little further. The location in Rua de Santa Catarina could not be bettered as it is in one of the flatter parts of Portugal's second city and is in a pedestrian zone, although taxis are able to pull up outside the hotel entrance. From my arrival to departure the staff were excellent in every regard. The ground floor bar was great and being a Sunday the restaurant served a really good buffet dinner at a very good price. Breakfast also offered a very nice range of dishes. The bedrooms are also nice with all mod cons. The hotel is well situated for a visit to the magnificent Mercado Municipal de Bolhao (a must visit). However a walk to other parts of Porto (I walked to Livraria Lello) is difficult if you have mobility issues as Porto is very hilly and some roads are steep. Overall, highly recommended. ||

I’m not a serial reviewer and generally look for the good in my experiences. This hotel has a good location in a pedestrianised st near the main market. That’s where it ends. Let’s start with the welcome. The receptionist looked so tired I asked if if she was ok. She passed me the keys which didn’t work on two occasions with one staff member blaming the other. Next the breakfast which was poor and I heard more than one person comment. It felt like there was drive to save money not provide a great meal to set off a long walking day in Porto. One our first day there was one coffee machine serving a full room with the resulting queues and frustrations. I saw bored staff cleaning table crumbs directly onto the chairs instead of onto a tray. I chose a suite because we like a bath and most rooms in Porto don’t have one. The room was acceptable but I reported a leak in the toilet cistern twice and had to wait in the room for someone to come . Apparently the person I reported it to didn’t feel it was important enough first time . I asked to have some milk for my coffee but apparently they don’t offer that said another staff member deposited there being a mini fridge in the room. No milk substitutes either. Weird. The main issue for me is the staff seemed so bored and uncaring throughout the hotel and I would avoid and won’t be going back.

We had a one night stopover here following our arrival in Porto. Easy access via the metro from the airport. The internal décor reflects the grand history of the hotel, and there is a roof terrace with seating. We had breakfast included which was a very good buffet selection. Yes, the bedrooms are quite small but fine for an overnight stay. Staff helpful and polite. Before moving on the next day, we left our luggage at the hotel and explored the nearby area including the Bolhao Market.

Yelp
Location wise - this hotel is perfect. Look and feel wise - it feels like an really old school hotel. Think Tower of Terror in Disney or some old murder mystery from the Twilight zone. All of which are very cool. The rooms are very dated and the shower head sprinkles water at you. Getting the right temperature is also often a challenge. The staff is helpful and for a small city where you're just staying for two nights, it does its job. But you have to ding a star for the crappy shower.

Yelp
I'm a hotel snob. I admit it freely. And while this hotel is lovely from the outside and the many common areas, the guest rooms are small and uninspired. And, may I add, were updated sometime in the 70's so the grandeur and beauty that you see from the moment you push through the rotating door, vanishes when you step out of the elevator onto the room floors, and you see a sea of brown walls and carpet and functional doors with no ornamentation. The suite I had was a decent size, but the furnishings were abysmal. Brown carpet, a blue throw over the sofa, a brown velour chair and an orange bed made me think this room was furnished from a garage sale. And if you are trying to plug in your multiple devices, you will be unplugging things to plug in your devices. But there are plenty of good things as well if you can get beyond the way the room looks and the best is it's location right in the middle of all the great things Porto has to offer. There is also free wifi, a mini bar in the room, in room safe and a decent bed. The bathroom is also fully stocked but certainly not fancy. Breakfast is included in the price and that was quite nice with a wide range of things to choose from with scrambled eggs, ham, bacon, crusty bread and some pretty decent coffee. There is an old statement about a "party matching the invitation" and the Grand Hotel over promises with the beauty of the lower floors and the basic mis match of the rooms. You need only look at my pics to see what I mean. The wallpaper alone may keep you up at night. But it gets a solid 3 stars from me for location and functionality. I just wish the rooms were in keeping with the beauty that you first walk into.

Yelp
I agree that the rooms are small and uninspired, and unfortunately the evening service in the hotel restaurant was slow even when the place was nearly empty. But, on the plus side: the lobby and small bar area and sitting room are quite lovely and the hotel's location is excellent. The front desk staff at this historic hotel was so very helpful. I left my wallet in the safe, which I didn't realize until I reached Spain. The staff (Christina) was so very efficient in getting it shipped to me.
