I really wanted to appreciate this hotel’s old-world charm, but it had some drawbacks. The floors in our room were incredibly loud, creaking like firecrackers with every step. The beds weren’t memorable—neither particularly comfortable nor uncomfortable. We booked a suite and had plenty of space, but our friend, who stayed in a standard room, felt cramped. Breakfast was decent but the lowest quality of any hotel on our trip. The staff was very friendly, which was a plus. While the location looked good on a map, we found ourselves walking 15 minutes just to find decent restaurants. The biggest disappointment? They charge for in-room coffee. It felt unnecessary and knocked my rating from a 4 to a 3.

Although a central location, the rooms & en suites are tiny, barely space for 2 adults; difficult to walk around the bed, as you bang into the unit that stores the T.V, the bathroom is so tiny that you cannot walk passed another person using the loo (which is only 6 inches from the shower door! )|They provide a hair & body wash yet….|There is no: shampoo, conditioner, body lotion or facial tissues. Our room had a central air conditioning unit behind the window so if you opened the window it was extremely noisy.||The breakfast was basic, no choice of eggs except for scrambled. Cold baked beans, no tomatoes or salad items.||When we arrived we where told we had to move hotel, due to works on our floor; then after I persisted, the receptionist said that she had made a mistake, as I booked directly with them, I did not need to relocated yet others did! This was without any prior notice, to allow guests to make their own choice & maybe cancel their booking.||We had late check out at 12.30pm; yet when we arrive back to our room at 11.20am, we were locked out!|We paid the same for this hotel as for one in Lisbon, which was far superior in every single way.

The front desk, concierge and house keeping personnel are wonderful, professional, kind and helpful. |The area is perfect! Everything is close by, walking the City Center and traveling to the Douro River can all be accomplished by foot. |Majestic Cafe is across the street. A mall is only a few stores away. Nighttime performers are common in the street and wonderful bistros, a chocolate shop and ice cream shops are on the block. It’s a fabulous place in one of the best areas in town! |The rooms are comfortable - we had a family room with an upstairs bedroom. It was quiet and comfortable. The free breakfast is a treat. Any foods from the in-room fridge, or the nespresso coffee machine are at a charge. They arrange front door taxi service or you can pick up an Uber at the corner. |Wonderful place to stay!!

I don't see how anyone can underrate this hotel! The staff that we met were all AMAZING...so kind, polite and eager to help. |The room that we had was spacious and really clean. The bathroom door didn't shut fully but that's the design of the doors!|Someone left a review saying there were no tea making facilities in the room. We had a coffee maker and we also asked for a kettle! Just ask if you need something...they are so helpful. |Breakfast was good too. Very samey, but that's like a lot of hotels!|Lots of areas to relax/unwind. |It's on the main street (which is pedestrianised) which I guess could her noisey in the summertime...just close your windows and use the aircon (which was the quietest aircon I've ever had on a hotel).

This hotel wows from the moment you step inside. It is a beautiful historic hotel slap bang in the middle of a pedestrian shopping street !! The reception area and ground floor library, bar, dining room etc immediately takes you back to another era.|The hallways on each floor are quite beautiful in themselves with blue panelled walls. Our room was bright, fresh and clean. The bathroom was almost as large as the room itself, and in addition to the bedroom and bathroom there is a small room/area just inside the door where the wardrobe is which can be closed off once in the room.|The buffet breakfast had a great variety of hot and cold items as did the two dinner buffets we had there.|The reception staff were more than helpful when we asked for direction/recommendations etc.|Would def recommend this hotel and would stay again anytime.

This is a historic hotel, well situated on a busy pedestrianised street. We chose it as parking was offered. However on arrival this was no longer available. A porter assisted with taking our luggage to the hotel and we were directed to a parking garage a block or two away. |Check in was friendly and we were given advice on the sights and nearby restaurants. |Our room was very traditional, small, but clean and bright and had everything we needed including a bar fridge. It had a good marble bathroom. |The breakfast buffet was disappointing considering the overall feel of the hotel and the grand dining room. More fresh fruit options should be included since there was so much lovely fresh fruit available in the markets. A wider selection of cheeses would also have been nice.

Emotional||There are hotels that you regularly go to, there are hotels that you will never see again and there are hotels that will remain in your heart. The latter, this is one!||This 19th Century Hotel is located in the finest street in Porto, the location is second to none.||The service, the staff the treatment of guests belongs to an era different to now.||I did not want this review to be “samey” as other people have correctly given it excellent reviews.||I have just returned to the UK and told my 93 year old Father (Shakespearian Professor, published by Oxford and Princeton) about Porto. He cannot move from the living room. He understands that if possible, I his son would take him to Porto and this Hotel.||My Lady friend’s Father was a “Savoy Man” (Three Michelin Keys). He died in 2002. I have no doubt that if he were a live now such a Gentleman would stay at the Grande Hotel do Porto.

Amazing hotel, newly renovated and just beautiful all together. And the staff is really helpful and friendly. And it's in the middle of everything! Will definitely come again

Yelp
Location wise - this hotel is perfect. Look and feel wise - it feels like an really old school hotel. Think Tower of Terror in Disney or some old murder mystery from the Twilight zone. All of which are very cool. The rooms are very dated and the shower head sprinkles water at you. Getting the right temperature is also often a challenge. The staff is helpful and for a small city where you're just staying for two nights, it does its job. But you have to ding a star for the crappy shower.

Yelp
I'm a hotel snob. I admit it freely. And while this hotel is lovely from the outside and the many common areas, the guest rooms are small and uninspired. And, may I add, were updated sometime in the 70's so the grandeur and beauty that you see from the moment you push through the rotating door, vanishes when you step out of the elevator onto the room floors, and you see a sea of brown walls and carpet and functional doors with no ornamentation. The suite I had was a decent size, but the furnishings were abysmal. Brown carpet, a blue throw over the sofa, a brown velour chair and an orange bed made me think this room was furnished from a garage sale. And if you are trying to plug in your multiple devices, you will be unplugging things to plug in your devices. But there are plenty of good things as well if you can get beyond the way the room looks and the best is it's location right in the middle of all the great things Porto has to offer. There is also free wifi, a mini bar in the room, in room safe and a decent bed. The bathroom is also fully stocked but certainly not fancy. Breakfast is included in the price and that was quite nice with a wide range of things to choose from with scrambled eggs, ham, bacon, crusty bread and some pretty decent coffee. There is an old statement about a "party matching the invitation" and the Grand Hotel over promises with the beauty of the lower floors and the basic mis match of the rooms. You need only look at my pics to see what I mean. The wallpaper alone may keep you up at night. But it gets a solid 3 stars from me for location and functionality. I just wish the rooms were in keeping with the beauty that you first walk into.

Yelp
I agree that the rooms are small and uninspired, and unfortunately the evening service in the hotel restaurant was slow even when the place was nearly empty. But, on the plus side: the lobby and small bar area and sitting room are quite lovely and the hotel's location is excellent. The front desk staff at this historic hotel was so very helpful. I left my wallet in the safe, which I didn't realize until I reached Spain. The staff (Christina) was so very efficient in getting it shipped to me.
