10 Best Breakfast Spots in Maui for a Fresh Start to the Day | Condé Nast Traveler

"The eponymous Grandma of this rustic, family-owned coffee moved to Maui from Puerto Rico in 1899, and was one of the first people on the island to roast and blend coffee beans in 1918. Today, four generations later, her family continues the tradition, picking the beans by hand, drying them in the sun and roasting them onsite. As a result, Grandma's is some of the best-tasting coffee you'll drink on the island, no matter how you like it (latte, cappuccino, drip, espresso). If you're just popping in for a snack, order a slice of the still-warm, fresh-baked banana bread or the (aptly named) pineapple-banana dream cake. Or both—who's judging?" - Kris Fordham

A Heartwarming Stop at Grandma’s Coffee House Grandma’s Coffee House is the quintessential spot to pause and savor a delicious meal. For those wondering about parking, there’s ample space just across the street should the front lot be full - just be mindful to avoid obstructing the road. From the moment we entered, we were greeted by exceptionally friendly staff and the aroma of their outstanding coffee - a promise of good things to come. Our choices included the upcountry omelet, a savory breakfast bagel, the combo special, and a delightfully fluffy Belgian waffle. Each dish was a hit, brimming with flavor and comfort. For those preferring water, it’s conveniently self-serve, located at the front of the restaurant. Seating options are plentiful, with both cozy indoor and serene patio settings. Dining here truly feels like a visit to Grandma’s house, surrounded by the comforting scents of delicious food and walls adorned with reflections of her family and community. In essence, Grandma’s Coffee House offers not just a meal, but a charming and delicious experience reminiscent of a warm, familial embrace.

Had a snack after our walk on Thompson Road beautiful day for the outdoors! Shared a club sandwich, very tasty. Place was quite busy inside an outdoor dining. Got our food relatively quick while we looked at the gorgeous view. Headed thru north of Kula for the starting of the Jacaranda season. High 60s perfect weather!!

Google
A local upcountry coffee/cafe place. Its a must come every time we visit maui. Great views, good brewed coffee, delicious grandma 👵🏻 like food cooked up all homemade. Staff is friendly and treat them well visitors! Heard lady in front of me complaining about prices, its an island and secluded (what do you expect) everything is worth it here we have had so many dishes here. My wife loved the mahi mahi eggs Benedict. My loco moco was delicious. Will always come back! Keep up great work crew! Also careful of the birds they will definitely take advantage of food left on plate 😂. No harm though and enjoy the wildlife on porch with cool weather.

I stopped by after a visit to the Haleakala National Park. Worth the stop for some much needed fuel. I got an ice mocha with two extra shots. The coffee was really tasty and had a really nice mouthfeel. I got the lava brownie (pictured) and banana walnut sour cream cake. Both were really tasty but I personally liked the lava brownie better! Great serving sizes too. The barista was really friendly and the place was comfortable and clean.

We came across this cafe for breakfast: it’s a really cute small business owned cafe, has a very warm homely feel. The staff was professional and pleasant. We ordered: 1. Veggie Bagel - 5/5 - delicious with lots of veggies 2. Veggie Burger - 5/5 - husband really liked it, simple and fresh 3. Fries - 4/5 - was tasty We were accompanied by our non vegetarian friends, they really enjoyed the pancakes - to quote my friend “Pancakes were freaking amazing”, and shared feedback that eggs were average. Overall we enjoyed our breakfast and would recommend this place for anyone looking for breakfast options in the area.

Great place to stop midway on our bike ride. Great coffee and pastries but also have a lot of sandwiches and such that they make fresh. Sit inside or out on he covered deck.

Very cute and old style coffee house. The coffee is really good, I bagel with cream cheese and added bacon and the highlight food for me was their banana and pineapple cake! Best caKe I ever had - Moist, perfect balance of flavors and sweet.

Pros: My Upcountry omlette was delicious. The building is quaint, and the view from the lanai is nice. Cons: Three of us ordered at the same time. My omlette arrived quickly. My friends meals did not arrive in a timely manner. 1 had to go get her own food from the counter, and the Eggs Benedict was cold. The other order was put behind newer orders, and I had to go get it from the kitchen myself. How hard is an order of chili & rice?! The young female employee argued with 2 of us about the orders coming out very late, and after newer orders were delivered to other customers. The woman & and her family, who ordered in front of us, were also waiting over 15 minutes for their order. This experience left us all with no desire to ever return.

Yelp
This little hole-in-the-wall is worth the drive. Lots of food choices from meat to vegetarian. Coffee , from what I understand, is grown there and dried and made into coffee. It was smooth and low acidity. Pastries were good...and the banana bread with frosting was heavenly! My husband had the upcountry omelette and it was gone in no time. The sourdough bread has great flavor and that slightly "tough to tear" texture that added to its deliciousness. I had the veggie bagel sandwich. The cream cheese was oozing out of both ends and the vegetables were crisp and fresh. The team working was very friendly and helpful to us in making choices from so many options. We will be returning here for sure...probably for the second time on this trip!

Yelp
If you're ever in Maui and take an early morning drive up to Haleakala... definitely stop here for breakfast on the way down. It literally feels like you're eating on Grandma's patio! Excellent view, great music, Ono grinds! Taste like home. Service was quick and easy. You get in line, order, and sit out on the patio and they bring you your food. This was one of the most memorable places I've at in Maui. Comfort food at its finest. Everything was delicious and fresh!!!! Broke da' mouth for sure!!!

Yelp
Best coffee I've had in a really long time AmaZing views, cozy environment, great service, stop here if you want a wonderful breakfast

Yelp
The best part of travel for me has always been the serendipity of finding new places, not having any expectations and being so happy with your discovery that you wind up staying a little longer before you get to your intended destination. That's what this place did for me. We've been upcountry many times over a span of 20 years travelling to Maui but we've never been to these parts. I wanted a quick stop for coffee and pastries and found this place on Yelp, but it was so much more. Inside was cozy and felt like someone's home--Grandma's, duh--if your grandma made amazing mocha, tropical muffins studded with nuts and pineapple and a solid loco moco and displayed vibrant canvas photographs taken by local artists. Outside seating featured live music, maybe Grandpa, strumming on his uke. Service was not fast but so totally ok for what they deliver on--local food, made with love on Hawaiian time. Just chill and take it all in. Grandma doesn't move like she used to.

Yelp
After visiting Haleakala, I had a few hours to kill before my reservation at Maui wines. The cashier girl helping me and my bf was super friendly and telling us her favorite items on the menu. There was no one else in line. Prob 4-5 young adults working the kitchen. A girl from the kitchen came up and gave us a menu and made a remark to just look at the menu to see what we wanted, proceeding to talk to the cashier that was helping us. That rubbed me the wrong way, as we were in the middle of a conversation with the cashier. I just ordered my coffee and decided not to eat breakfast here after that. As I was waiting for my coffee, I noticed the cashier making my coffee while the other 4-5 young adults were in the open kitchen eating bananas. Just a weird experience. Parking is slim and no bathrooms on property.

Yelp
What happened? $60 for breakfast for 2. The coconut french toast was burned beyond recognition, cold and served on a paper plate with plastic utensils. This is not what anyone should endure. My wife got the combo breakfast - also served cold and on a paper plate. Disappointing in so many ways. Keep driving and go to La Provence for much better quality. They need to do much better here at Grandmas to ever get us back.

Yelp
We chose to try this spot out after experiencing the sunrise at Haleakalā. Menu was decent and a little pricier than I expected. Parking is limited out front and along the streets. The ambience is cute and homey - there's both indoor and outdoor seating. Staff was... hit or miss. A couple of them were nice, but one was small kine rude. Ordering is not efficient. They took our order, then took their time making our drink, then did the transaction (CASH ONLY), then *lastly* sent the order back to be made. It took like 10mins for the entire process. Thennnnn, we had to wait for our food. We ordered: + Loco Moco + Half Order French Toast + Walnut Banana Bread + Cappuccino All items were pretty good. We sat outside in the corner which had a cute view. My other gripe is that... they have NO BATHROOMS. I'm currently 8+months and expecting... and the waitress told me that it's 5-10minute walk and *up a hill* to the nearest restroom... at a nearby park. That is ridiculous... and there was absolutely no signage that indicated that beforehand. Customers have no way of washing their hands or relieving themselves. I made a mental note... that I most likely wouldn't return and would not recommend to others who asked about breakfast after sunrise. I mean, the food was good... but all the other stuff made it not worth it. Yelp 2023 Challenge: 02/30

Yelp
Stoped by and tried the famous chili omelet 2/5 and a banana chocolate chip muffin 3/5 with pineapple juce 5/5 for the drink. The omelet and chili did.not have the flavor bang that I was looking for and the muffin had the moisture trapped by the cling wrap so it was a little soggy but the pineapple juice was amazing. We also had tea, coffee and oatmeal with a order of French toast 4/5 Lovely folks unique location. FYI no restroom at the restaurant must go to the park.

Yelp
This coffee shop restaurant is great for breakfast or lunch. It is a popular stop for tourists on the way to East Maui. It is next to Last gas station to Kaupo/Hana. The food is great and service helpful, but the lines can get long. On a Sunday late morning, I was hoping to get some eggs Benedict. Unfortunately, they sold out two people ahead of me. I settled for the seared ahi. It was thinly cut so it ended up being pan fried instead of seared. (Don't expect a one inch slab of ahi.) the cornbread was tasty. If you're in Kula on the way to Hana, this is the last stop to get breakfast. Park on the side of the road, but don't block the highway.
google avatar

Becky L.

Yelp
Very cool spot - you order at the front then find seats. They have breakfast and lunch. Good selection of coffee drinks too. Our food was great- had a combo special with eggs, ham and sourdough. Also, we tried the coconut crusted French toast. Great on its own and with syrup. They offer free water at the front but there is no bathroom at this location. It is down the road at a local park. Cute back porch to eat but it is shaded so a little cool. Parking kinda sucks but you can park across the street which might help to get back on the highway.

Yelp
Maui family wanted to get here for breakfast! Loved the family feel, there was even live music which was a nice touch! My son said best waffle he ever had and thats huge! He is a waffle expert!

Yelp
We stayed in Kula recently for a wedding; and even though we only had around 36 hours total on Maui this time around, we tried to fit all kinds of things besides the wedding into such a short trip. Grandma's Coffee House was only a short drive from our B&B, and I'm so glad I found this place on Yelp! Iooove me some amazing locally roasted and brewed coffees, and amazing food. It was a Sunday, and this place was pumping when we arrived shortly before noon. So we almost changed plans from having brunch to only grabbing coffee. But thankfully some tables opened up while we were in line. We ordered a cafe Mocha for my husband with a Loco Moco. And I had just a hot coffee with a Lox Benedict that came on a cornbread waffle! Oh my goodness! The Loco moco was one of the best we've had in a looong time, with a homemade patty and awesome gravy. The Lox Benedict was awesome!! And the coffee... nothing beats fresh brewed hot coffee, sitting in Kula with nothing to worry about while someone watches your kids for you back on Oahu! LOL. After you order your food and find a table, you wait, not too long, even on a Sunday rush. There's a cool dude named Charlie or Charles (I'm so sorry about the Mom brain), who calls out your name as he walks through the restaurant and patio to find you. He is hilarious and one of a kind! He made our experience at Grandma's Coffees House even more memorable! Visit them if you're curious to see how, but please go with a sense of humor. Love it, and we'll be back the next time we're in town...!

Yelp
Decided to stop in for breakfast before our kid's soccer game at Eddie Tam Park in Makawao. Called in our take out order so we could eat at Rice Park. Glad I ordered ahead of time, since the 4 people in front of me in line were indecisive and asked twenty questions. By the time I got to the counter, my food, iced coffee, and lemon raspberry blondie were ready to go. Excellent service and friendly staff. I ordered the upcountry omelet with Portuguese sausage, char siu, onions amd cheese with steamed rice. So delicious and good portion size. I think I'll opt for the keokea omelet next time around since it's got veggies

Yelp
Food was very tasty! Coffee was excellent! We came in during a busy time and still did not wait longer than 10 minutes. I would definitely recommend trying if you're in Kula!

Yelp
Cute little coffee place after a long morning sunrise drive to Haleakala national park. They open at 7am so it's a great stopping point right after the curvy drive down. We ordered the bullseye breakfast and the coconut crusted French toast. Both were really good but I might be biased when I say I really love corn beef hash. It was layered with rice, a generous amount corn beef hash with 2 over easy eggs on top with sliced spam around and ketchup around it all. Delicious combo! The coconut crusted French toast was good in its own right but I can only have one bite of any French toast. My husband loved it and he's usually picky with his French toast. Nice and efficient staff works there and food is prepared pretty quickly. Would come back if I was ever back in the area!

Aaron C.

Yelp
I went here after a long drive from a nearby national park and was very tired. I got a waffle. It tasted really good I got the food relatively quickly and the workers were nice. There was lots of greenery outside. My only problem was that the bathroom was very far away.

Yelp
We ate here after bearing witness to the sunrise at Haleakala. It was mid-week, early, and this place was still hoppin busy. We ate the Kualua Moco and it was fantastic. The place is small, we really enjoyed it. Thank you.
google avatar

Art C.

Yelp
For a coffee house the coffee here was just OK (maybe below average for Maui). But it still gets the nod because we had an excellent kalua pig breakfast here. There was a long-ass line so we were thinking it was all about the coffee... NOPE. It's the food. Go here for the food. It's excellent...

Shiraz Z.

Yelp
Amazing service very homey. The food was extremely good. I got a turkey sandwich and pineapple cake!

Yelp
such a beautiful and local spot with DELICIOUS food. great spot if you want that antique local vibe. worth the wait :)

Yelp
Stopped here for a late breakfast and enjoyed our meal. We had French toast, waffles and the potatoes. Everything was delicious - especially the potatoes. We also got pumpkin bread to go that was also really good.

Yelp
Awesome grinds can be crowded especially on the weekends! Online ordering is definitely cherry
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
Service was great and pretty quick! We ordered the Kalua Pork Plate and the Breakfast Bagel. Both were good! We also ordered drip coffee and a vanilla latte and those were delicious as well! Overall it was a great experience! The price seems a little high for the quality of the food. FYI the bathroom is about a 5 minute walk at a near by park.

Yelp
We wanted to have breakfast before heading to Haleakala national park, so we left at 7am from Ka'anapali and arrived around 8:10 am. Grandma's coffee house is a small green colored house with an outdoor patio. You get in line to place your order, then the servers deliver the food to you. We placed two orders kalua pork, eggs, and rice, kalua pork loco moco, a strawberry pancake, two cappuccinos and a latte. Just then, I had an urge to use the restroom. The server kindly directed me to a public restroom about 1/3 miles away. Basically you go outside, turn left and walk past the church and play structure, take another right and you will see a public restroom structure on top of a small hill. The restroom was clean, what a great relief! By the time I returned from my trip, my pancake was missing while everyone was almost done with their food. So we waited a bit longer before realizing they had forgotten my pancake! Eventually I got it, but that delayed our hiking trip about 30 minutes. So my tips are: 01. If they bring out everyone's dishes but yours is missing, check with the server immediately. 02. The restroom can be a short hike, you can drive there to save time. 03. The roosters there can be aggressive. We saw one ripped a bagel from a little girls hand. She wasn't hurt but was scared and cried. So keep the food on the table and everything will be fine.
google avatar

Yelp
Such a wonderful and lovely coffee house to stop at on the way to or from Hana Town! I had their iced coffee, a double-chocolate chip cookie and their apple crisp, and it was so refreshing and delicious! Grandma's Coffee House has other breakfast and lunch options available. It is very popular, so seating inside the building or in their open-air patio may be limited at times. I strive to support smaller mom and pop businesses, and this is definitely one of those which you should totally support!

Yelp
One of the best places I've eaten on the island. Just imagine a country side Mom and Pop type place that everyone goes to. Grandma's Coffee house has a cute home like restaurant feel. My friends and I stopped by on a weekday and there was a line out the door. We ordered everything from the blueberry danish, full order of French toast, iced coffee, ham and cheese combo special, and the Keokeo sandwich. Everything was delicious and made fresh. I loved the coconut in the French toast and the coffee was really strong. The French toast was so delicious between the 6 of us we shared 3 full orders of it. Prices are reasonable and even with the long line my wait was under 10 minutes. Theres no bathroom and parking can be tight.

Lauren T.

Yelp
Such a cute little stop upcountry! We got yummy loco moco! A fun way to start the day.
google avatar

Shru M.

Yelp
We came in here early morning and the cafe was bustling with people. It's a very popular spot for folks coming in for breakfast after catching the Haleakala sunrise or heading down the back road of road to Hana. Their coffee is pretty good and you can buy some local Maui coffee packs here too. They serve a wide variety of breakfast options and some fresh baked bakery items as well that you could conveniently pack for for your day ahead!
google avatar

Swatee G.

Yelp
After an epic failure to see the sunrise ( fog and rain), we stopped by to fortify ourselves before the rest of our days' activities started. There was no line at 8 am and we snagged a seat quickly. The service was quick, to the point and a little bit intimidating, tbh. We were not offered a menu ( realized there was one after we ordered) and were left reading several different boards for random items. Anyways, we ordered some coffee and a latte - both were strong, made with local coffee beans that I appreciated. I ordered scrambled eggs with sour dough toast - the toast was tangy like I expected south dough to be. Not enough eggs or butter to eat the 2 pieces of toast in my opinion. For the price I paid, I came out feeling still hungry! Finding salt and pepper was a little bit of a treasure hunt. Ragz got the egg salad sandwich and felt like there was too much mayo and not enough eggs. Lily's bagel with eggs was a similar story - not enough eggs. We saw a lot of locals coming and goes, and several tourists too. Took us an hour to get in and out. There is NO restroom here - you can walk to a community park uphill( 5 min walk) and use the public restrooms. Didn't see a line while we were there. Overall, I felt like the place may have seen better days and the while the food tasted fresh and was edible, it definitely didn't live up to its reviews as the best breakfast ever and also seemed severely overpriced for what we received.
google avatar

Sean D.

Yelp
This cute restaurant is in the clouds in upper Kula. The food is fantastic and the service is full of aloha. Cute spot that has indoor and outdoor seating.
google avatar

Kylie S.

Yelp
Great spot to stop and replenish after coming down from Haleakala. We stopped after a not-so-successful sunrise and replenished. It was a fairly simple menu with a variety of coffee options! I did leave off a star because of no bathroom. It is what it is. I'm glad I looked at reviews prior and prepared! Overall I'd probably stop here again. You would want to get here early. It's a fairly small spot and would fill up quickly. Thankfully the food is fast!
google avatar

Doc F.

Yelp
Nothing but love for Grandma's. I drink black coffee and don't eat breakfast. The rest of the family likes everything from latte to hot chocolate...French toast to breakfast sandwiches and everyone leaves happy. For us everyday in Maui starts at Grandmas! mahalo nui loa iā oe to everyone that works at Grandmas...you are all awesome
google avatar

Evan C.

Yelp
Stopped here for breakfast after watching the sunrise on the mountain crater. The Loco Moco was the best ever. It was different as the Pattie's were more like a Salisbury steak than a hamburger. My wife had the French toast which was also very good and the coffee was excellent. Feedback to restaurant: you have every flavoring for coffee and every kind of creamer. Having just sugar and Truvia for a coffee shop with no Splenda or Sweet n Low is not acceptable. Simple fix.
google avatar

AC F.

Yelp
4.5 stars Ordered rainbow roll and kaarage chicken bowl with shrimp tempura on the side. Bowl also came with salad. It was really good and so was the sushi roll. Sushi was on the smaller size though - so if you're used to big size bite, their rolls are smaller. I probably could've eaten another roll or two. Servers were super friendly. The dining is in the back so you have to walk through the store - cute store with clothes, books, like- a nice boutique .. lady in front though was not too friendly - maybe she was having a bad day. All in all we'd probably go back.
google avatar

Wendy C.

Yelp
I found this coffee house when looking for places to go to after watching the sunrise on the dormant volcano. It was in a guide book. While the book told me about the homemade cinnamon raisin French toast.. it doesn't exist anymore.. unless they just didn't have it available when we went. Instead, I have the coconut French toast. It was really good but I didn't get the flavor of Coconut in each bite. I also had a cup of their coffee that they have been making since 1918 and it was quite good. We got there shortly after they opened at 7am and it was a minimum wait.
google avatar

D G.

Yelp
Food was ok - mediocre not great- service was extra slow we waited an hour for our food- the only reason I give it a few stars is the place is very cute. No bathrooms be ware - very clean bathroom across the the road at the park
google avatar

Jessi Lynne B.

Yelp
Love this spot! Super cute and cozy. You can dine in or take out and have a picnic across the street at the park. Due to covid, there are a few spots inside spaced out, as well as outside on the deck is very nice. My ultimate favorite is the egg's benedict but it's only offered on the weekends. The cornbread waffle is a game changer than the typical english muffin. Everything they offer is yummy and worth their prices. Great for the whole family, something for everyone.
google avatar

Gvin M.

Yelp
The location is the main attraction here. Beautiful surroundings, sitting outside surrounded by coffee trees and other tropical plants. Also this is at the bottom of Thompson drive, Oprah's estate. Food was not as good as I had expected. Mahi-mahi was ok, the bread treats were good and the açaí bowl was a little soggy. Service was efficient.
google avatar

Michelle S.

Yelp
Cute little restaurant located in Keokea. Its a small older building. Walk in and place your order at the counter and then you may have a seat and they'll bring you your food. We had a party of 7 so we grabbed a booth and a table. We made it work. Our food arrived very fast fit then being very busy. I had the potatoesband onions with spices. I could only eat half I was to fill to finish it. I also had the bacon. I wish it was a little more crispy for my liking. The toast I ordered came at the very end of the meal we were all done eating so we took it home. Everyone seemed to enjoy their breakfast. Staff are friendly. There are paintings on the wall that you can purchase. We'll be back when we're in the area, I would like to try the lunch menu.

Kylee K.

Yelp
Ummmm well let me start off by saying .. This place was the best and use to be my favorite from small kid time. But eehhhh its not da same. Like.. if you order an ACAI bowl tell them you want extra ACAI. Its crazy how you order something with the name in the title and you get less of it. I wish i took a picture but my bowl was 13$ and i had maybe 1/4 cup of acai and the rest was all granola and all banana and strawberry(Full to the top with toppings) Like whaaaaat ? Also my bf got the Bullseye and he literally had a small scoop of rice and quarter of the corn beef hash with thin pieces of spam and the shit load of Ketchup. We use to go Grammas all the time but now we won't be taking our business there . TOO EXPENSIVE for the amount given. I mean COME ON we live Hawai'i we no eat like birds.. but definitely send all the tourist there cause they can afford it.
google avatar

Cassy W.

Yelp
This was recommended as a quick coffee stop to us. My sister had the açaí bowl, my dad, and I the turkey club, and my mom had the French toast! We all thought our food was delicious, and service was quick and friendly. I also had an Iced latte which was tasty, but only comes with 1 shot of espresso, so if you like your coffee strong add extra!

Journey M.

Yelp
Service 0/10. The girls at the register are very disrespectful and inconsiderate. Makes the food not even worth it. I would never order from this place again.
google avatar

Kristi W.

Yelp
Nestled off of Kula Rd. This quaint little coffee house is a nice stop along your ride. I had an iced latte. It was o.k. The inside is charming. There are also baked goods available, as well as logo t-shirts you can purchase.
google avatar

Gabby S.

Yelp
Stopped at Grandma's coffee house for a little snack after visiting Haleakala. Ordered a chai tea latte, hot chocolate, and the blueberry pastry. The chai tea was fantastic, but the hot chocolate and blueberry pastry were alright. The inside was very cute, with decor you would find at your grandma's house.

Yelp
Super cute and vintage diner up in the hills of Maui! We love stopping here for coffees or their delicious pastries. They also seem to have a delicious breakfast menu so we will be back to try it! They have indoor and outdoor seating with ocean views. Enjoy the tranquility!

Yelp
We drove about an hour from Kihei here just to try the coconut French toast that our friend highly recommended. It was perfect and worth the drive. We also ordered loco moco. It was okay. The patty was very hard on the outside and raw inside. It has a strong gamey taste.

Yelp
The BEST breakfast spot on Maui. Seriously. Grandma's Coffee House is a little out there in the upcountry but it's so worth going. Pro tip: Come here after watching the Haleakalā sunrise. Whatever you order (you can't go wrong), enjoy it outside on the lanai right under the coffee trees. We got: -The French toast with homemade cinnamon raisin bread -Weekend special: Eggs benedict on a cornbread waffle with homemade lemon hollandaise and home fries that are like crack

Yelp
Great little place for breakfast with plenty of menu options for all tastes. Old world charm and it was worth the drive up country to try Grandma's! The view from the outside corner table was great !
