Granja Dulcinea - Gastro Obscura

"When the Spanish encountered cacao in Mexico in the early 16th century, Barcelona became an important transit point for the ingredient when it arrived in Europe. But xocolata, as processed chocolate is known in Catalan, didn’t become mainstream in the city until a couple hundred years later. Eventually, the ingredient came to be included in dishes both savory and sweet, and Barcelona gained a strong reputation for both its chocolate consumption and production. In particular, Carrer Petritxol, in the city’s Gothic Quarter, became home to several chocolate shops, lending the narrow lane the nickname of “Chocolate Street,” a history described via tile murals that line it. Arguably the most famous of these is Granja Dulcinea, opened in 1941. Generations of locals have come here to drink xocolata a la tassa, Catalan-style hot chocolate, dark and rich—almost chocolate mousse-like—but milkier and less thick than elsewhere in Spain. If this isn’t enough, opt for the decadent suís, the “Swiss,” hot chocolate topped with a mountain of rich whipped cream, or you can pair your mug with the dense, sugar-dusted churros—perfect for dipping. The interior is charmingly decked out in dark woods, there’s a fireplace and a small upper balcony, and all the servers are men. They also serve a variety of baked goods including ensaïmadas, a pastry of Sephardic Jewish origin from Mallorca that’s common in Barcelona. Know Before You Go Like many businesses in Spain, Granja Dulcinea closes for a siesta between 1 p.m. and 4:30 p.m." - Austin Bush

It looks small from the outside, but there are many seats upstairs. The atmosphere inside is cozy. I really liked the ring churros — they went perfectly with the hot chocolate. The classic chocolate was a bit too bitter for me. Next time, I’ll try the French one. The prices are normal, and it’s worth it. The staff speak English. I recommend this place.

Google
We loved discovering the original version of churros in Spain — barely sweet on their own! The chocolate sauce was thick and rich, with a pleasantly bitter touch. And as a bonus, the fact that the place served black tea was a delightful surprise!

Google
Very good price for quantity and quality. Churros and chocolate were great, though I do wish there was more (or any) cinnamon on the churros. Chocolate was very rich! 😋 Cute 1940s style seating area, and there's more seating upstairs. It's very busy, so be aware of that!

Google
We stumbled across this cafe in Barcelona and so glad we did! An absolute treat! Delicious baked goods and great quality drinks. Prices are also extremely reasonable for central Barcelona. My husband had the hot chocolate and churros (both delicious) and I had an Italian cappuccino and chocolate croissant, very tasty. The bill came to around €10. Absolutely worth popping into for a drink and sweet treats! Service was also very friendly and welcoming - and patient with Brits with limited Spanish! We would definitely return and recommend.

Google
Awesome churros - deliciously crispy texture with a rich (but not too sweet) hot chocolate. It’s an institution for a reason. Quickly seated but could’ve been a tad faster with taking our order - I’ll let them off though as the place was super busy!

Google
We lined up outside their shop for 20 mins prior to the opening at 4.30 pm. It’s unfortunate that the taste of the food isn’t as nice as the old decor charm. The churros were cold, chewy and stale like they were made hours ago (which is weird as we were the 1st set of customers) and the hot chocolate was average (like any hot chocolate powder can you buy at a grocery store), even the crème croissant was actually bad. The shop looks very nice and has an old world charm to it but the basic aspect (food taste) is extremely bad. I guess you shouldn’t trust all those food and travel bloggers who rave about this place. They are probably getting paid for it.

Google
Churros with Swiss chocolate were good, but the xuixos stood out for me. Got here 10 minutes before opening and was the first one seated.

Loved this place it’s so cute and comfy and has been around since the 40s! Cheap prices €21 for two. Love it worth a visit

Yelp
Very mixed reviews of this place to be honest. I had read that they have amazing Crema Catalana, so that's what we went for and it truly was amazing! Perfectly creamy and that crispy sugar topping on top was so perfect as well. The combination of them both was absolutely delicious! Churros were a major letdown! They were stale and not really crispy and quite dense as well. Server asked us if we wanted the chocolate to go with and we said yes but this was not too nice either. Too clunky and thick and didn't have that delicious smoothness we wanted. Ended up not even finishing that hot chocolate, and it turned out to be very expensive!

Yelp
We wanted to try hot chocolate at another spot, to compare and contrast to San Gines (Madrid) and local Granja Viader and admittedly, I had eaten way too many churros at the hotels and elsewhere. So we decided to have the Melindros cookies for a change. These cookies were like oversized lady finger cookies that's used for tiramisu. I once again ordered hot chocolate with fresh, whipped cream and that was excellent!! Looking back, I'd skip the Melindros cookies and get the churros instead. I guess I like the churro texture so much more. This is also close to La Rambla (Gothic quarter), so it's convenient to stop in and get your chocolate and sugar fix. It's definitely a solid choice as Dulcinea has been around since 1930.. I've also been to a Dulcinea in Iloilo (SM) but I'm sure there's no connection.

Yelp
We had breakfast at Dulcinea on our last day in Barcelona. I realized we had not had any churros or hot chocolate during our trip, so I found Dulcinea to remedy that. We arrived shortly after opening and were seated right away. We each had our own cup of hot chocolate, an order of churros, and an Ensaïmada Mallorca cake. Ensaïmada is a Mallorcan coil-shaped pastry and ours had this super delicious and creamy custard in the middle. It was so good, and I wish we had these in the US. The churros were warm and crispy and paired with the dark chocolate drinking chocolate was perfect. Service was very nice and friendly, and we had a really great breakfast.

Yelp
I encourage everyone to try churros from several places to really savor the subtle differences. The churros here are a little thinner. They are crispy on the outside (as they should be), but kind of sticky -- like mochi -- on the inside (1 star off). I prefer the churros that have more of a doughy consistency on the inside. They were still good, just not my cup of tea, or rather cup of hot chocolate!

Yelp
Crema Catalana: 4.25. Came by to try their crema catalana, Spain's version of creme brulee. Place was busy when I arrived just after 5 pm on a Sunday. I tried going to several recommended places on my way back to my hotel but they were closed until I found this place. I was greeted promptly at the door. I asked if I could order to go and staff mentioned a 1.5 euro charge for the special container. I decided to eat there. Dessert was brought to my table timely and it was a big portion. Too much for one person but it was very good so I ate it all. The price converted to USD from my credit card was $4.88. Based on the flavor and my appreciation of the dish, I was very satisfied. Staff was efficient and mostly friendly. Service: 4 Ambiance. 4 Value: 4

Yelp
Very good churros, we went through multiple plates! The chocolate was good and not too sweet. The cappuccino hit the spot as well

Yelp
The service is great and the hot chocolate is even better. It's not too sweet at all. They even give you sugar to add if you'd like, but you don't need it. We also got the cookies the dip them in chocolate.

Yelp
Incredible atmosphere and service, we sat upstairs which was a great view! The pastries did not blow me away unfortunately!

Yelp
Historic place for the very best churros and hot cocoa. Service is hyper friendly and efficient Highly recommended for the full churro experience!

Yelp
Delicioso churros no están super dulces y el pan dulce estaba muy rico. Buen servicio pero el chocolate caliente estaba absolutamente delicioso. Buen ambiente y bien ubicado.

Yelp
Came here after watching a YouTube review. Supposedly this place is 89 years old. I was excited. Place is on a small beaten path off la rambla and it was packed. You seat yourself and waiter comes to take your order almost immediately. We ordered two Swiss chocolate and one churo, one lady finger something. Foods arrived quickly. The Swiss chocolate was no joke! Dense, fresh cool whip cream on top over thick, smooth chocolate. Took me a while trying to stir it all together. Then comes the time to dip my doughy carbs into the magnificent dark matter. Churo and ladyfingers came out with completely different level of deliciousness. Churo was heavier, tastier and familiar. It tasted like a fried doughnut dipped in chocolate but way better. The lady finger (it may not be called lady finger. I forgot the name so I am making it up) was airy, light and refreshing. Almost had a lemony flavor to it. They were both good. Bill came out to 10 euros and it was worth every cent. Was it earth shattering good? No, but it was definitely something you must try in Spain. Side note: place is busy and big. So not much friendly chatter with staff in this place. Bathroom is tiny and broken. Seat fell off when I tried to lift it, knocked over the container that holds the toilet scrub and mysterious dirty liquid flowed out of it and through the bathroom Door to the outside....... Friendliness: 3/5 Price :1/5 (the lower the cheaper) Deliciousness: 4/5 Cleanliness:3/5

Yelp
One of the gems of Barcelona. We had the chocolate drink with meduros and churro. Soooo Good!

Yelp
So so good! Delicious churros. Great service. Was recommended to us by a tour guide and we are so thankful!

Yelp
It was good, but I really wanted it to be great. COOL place, go see it, and try the food, but mitigate your enthusiasm

Yelp
Delicioso Cute, relaxing place to stop by for churros. The churros were on the thinner side (not as fluffy), but they were still good. I also ordered cafe con leche and they pour the hot steamed milk at your table. I went to another churro place on Laeitana where it was just way too crowded, so it was nice to be able to sit down. I've read some other reviews that this place is pricier than others, but service is great and I would recommend it for a good experience in the gothic area.

Yelp
We went here twice during our trip in January 2020. It was so so good. The chocolate isn't too sweet which was perfect. I preferred the melindros over the churros but the boyfriends preferred those! So perfect for a nice breakfast treat. All of the staff is amazing there. Both times they were very attentive. You seat yourself and they will bring a menu. You won't be disappointed!

Sam M.

Yelp
My wife and I were wandering through the back streets of the gothic quarter in Barcelona and stumbled upon this place. It was kind of dark and old looking from outside but inside it was old world enchanting (from an American's point of view) the coffee was excellent and my wife was surprised by her chocolate. The pastries were freshly baked, crispy and delicious. A very nice place to take a break in your exploration of the Gothic Quarter.

Yelp
My visit here was actually serendipitous. My love and I were supposed to go to another place a friend suggested but instead we ended up here. Truth be told I am glad we stopped by. This is a 'not-in-a-negative-way' unsophisticated place for the locals where you can share some 'churros with chocolate' and have a chat with your companion. Suffice it to say this is a truly affordable Cafeteria. I did not looove it but I surely liked it. The hot chocolate for the churros was a little grainy and not smooth like some other ones but not terrible. Oh, and the chocolate flavor was a bit mild. Sort of like a homemade chocolate pudding, the first time once tries to make it. However, the churros were on point. So was my coffee, strong: Just what you need in the morning after 15 days of traveling.

Yelp
No frills place to have amazing churros & chocolate. Lots of seating, English menus, central location, and decently priced. I came alone and found the service to be quite fast compared to most other places I'd been to in Spain. The churros were thinner and not very flavorful on their own, but really came to life with the chocolate. And the chocolate - I could drink that everyday!!

Yelp
Items selected: Americano Horchatta Apple Cream Cake Ensaimada Farcida with Pumpkin Cream Churros Located not far from the Cathedral, its 1941opening and continuous operation at Carrer de Petritxol 2 making Granja Dulcinea one of Barcelona's most well-known purveyors of Chocolate and Churros for many years, it was for breakfast on Friday that two guests stopped in for a bite, the space entirely empty and the staff's laissez-faire attitude fairly off-putting. Originally founded by Juan Mach and Elvira Farràs, the business subsequently sold but owned by the current team for many years, it was just past 09h30 that the car was parked in a nearby garage and entering the Restaurant after a short walk the two men at the counter could barely be bothered to look up from the newspaper, "sit anywhere you like" spoke like a command rather than a suggestion and the English menu quickly navigated with three Pastries and two drinks requested. Told that the Hot Chocolate was "still not ready," something about the stove that the younger server could not translate holding things up, it was instead with a glass of Ice cold glass of Horchatta alongside an Americano that things got underway in just a few minutes, the décor dated yet comfortable and spread across two rooms of wood, tile and beams decorated with gargoyles. Primarily a bakery with a fairly limited menu, both the Apple Cream Cake and Ensaimada Farcida already prepared with the former a generous cut featuring plenty of Apples atop buttery Crust and the later nice and flaky, though without any evidence of "Pumpkin Cream" anywhere, it was after perhaps five or six minutes that three Churros emerged from the kitchen lightly topped with sugar, one visually overdone and the others also too crisp with too much oil still present both on and soaked-into the batter.

Yelp
Great little place. You have to stop in for some croissants and other pastries. Very popular with the locals.

Yelp
Awesome little place for churros con chocolate. I LOVE the ambiance and the history on this little place!!

Yelp
I passed by Dulcinea as I was strolling along Carrer de Petritxol and noticed the pretty storefront. So I decided to check it out with my boyfriend on our last day. We ordered several helpings of churros, a large cup of Spanish chocolate, a plate of nata (yup, that's fresh whipped cream!), ensaimada and cortados for both of us. The churros were excellent and I was also very happy to have tried the Mallorcan sweet bread, ensaimada and confirmed that the Filipino ensaimada which came from the Spanish, at its finest tastes exactly the same as the original. It was so good it sent me right back down memory lane to the traditional and excellent bakeries of my grandmother's hometown. Over all this place was excellent and I'm actually not sure why the reviews are not that great on Yelp. It's as good as Viader and better than Pallaresa in my opinion. I highly recommend it!

Yelp
This was a great stop for an afternoon dessert. We tried the drinking chocolate and the crema catalon. Both were wonderful. The chocolate there's extra thick! It's a good spot to sit down and rest for a little while. Service was very fast and friendly.
google avatar

Kat T.

Yelp
WOW! This is thee best churro and hot chocolate place I have every had in my life... OK it's not true. Pretty much it seems all of BCN has wonderful yummie churro but this place is on my top 3 list. It is a must try and must eat. yes it is a little hard to find but when you find it you will be the most happiest person ever. I wasn't lucky like Tara V. but it took awhile. They are friendly here and so nice since i had a huge stroller they totally accommodated me.
google avatar

Vincent N.

Yelp
Fast & friendly service! Thick chocolate drinks compared to how USA prepares hot chocolates (I'm not complaining LoL) Churros taste plain, which is why their is the chocolate drink, so amazing!

Audrey Y.

Yelp
we came here in the morning and ordered churros, cacaolat (cold chocolate drink), crema catalana and swiss hot chocolate. i didn't try the cacaolat but my sister said it was good. the swiss chocolate was very thick and rich. mixing in the whipped cream helped lighten it a bit but it was still too thick for my personal preference. the churro was good i guess. i can't really rate it because the other churros i've had in Spain werent that good so this was relatively the better one. it wasn't hot but it was crispy on the outside and doughy inside. the crema catalana portion was huge, and a bit hard to finish. personally, i didn't like crema catalana but i think that is also a personal thing i've come to realize in Spain. i think it has to do with the texture, as well as the orange flavoring. although this review doesn't reflect my personal opinion. objectively, i think this place would be good if you enjoy dark, rich chocolate and crema catalana.
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
AMAZING!!! I had multiple recommendations point me in the direction of this little shop and trust me, they were all right. The best churros with chocolate you'll find in Barcelona. The service is exceptionally quick and friendly, and the atmosphere is wonderful. The room feels like something out of a fairytale! Not only are their desserts to die for, but everything is very affordable. We had to go back twice we loved it so much! Be warned though, they close for a few hours in the afternoon like most other cafes.

Yelp
What? How come there are no reviews? This is an excellent "granja-xocolateria" located on the boutiquey, narrow, and art-and-chocolate-packed Carrer de Petritxol, just 1 minute's walk from the Liceu station on Las Ramblas. I love cute dessert cafes like these. The churros come in four pieces (1.50€). They're crunchy, and destined to be dipped in their thick hot chocolate (chocolat épais), 2.70€. This thick, rich, semi-sweet hot chocolate is not meant to be drunk, but is a perfect classical accompaniment to churros in Spain. If you dip your melindros (biscuit spongieux; 1.50€ for two lady fingers) in it, you become awesome. I also highly recommend their chuchos (1.60€), which are soft sugar-dusted Catalonian pastries filled with a thick cream custard, similar to a "Bavarian/Boston cream donut." I also tried their miel i mato (3.50€), a Catalan soft cheese and honey dessert; the serving is large enough for two people, and it tastes fresh, simple, and healthy. I wish I my pancreas made enough insulin handle their ensaimadas, gaufres, flan, crème catalan, and everything else on the menu (which also comes in English for tourists). Apparently, this granja, of no more than 8 tables, was a favorite of Salvador Dali, and now of me.

Yelp
This place was trumpeted to me as the best place for churros in the city, and an excellent location for waffles too, but I have to say I was left really disappointed. The churros aren't bad at all but I think you can find better in Barcelona. The waffles were just alright (this could be my fault as I went all out and ordered the one with everything on it which, in retrospect, may have been excessive hehe) but there was something about the ice cream and chocolate sauce which didn't taste quite right. A nice spec is that the store is very nice (think old-fashioned look with dark wood tables, glass and bright lighting) and the service is quite attentive.
google avatar

Tara V.

Yelp
This place was fairly easy to find even for tourists. Small, cute cafe. We came on a weeknight and it was fairly busy. Staff was nice and helpful. Cacaolat: Bottled drink similar to chocolate milk, but sweeter. It was ok. Ensaimada (Mallorean cake) - Pastry with butter and sugar on top. It was good. Churros with dipping chocolate - Twisted churros with thick warm chocolate, similar to chocolate pudding. Definitely would recommend this.

Yelp
Go later in day, we went around 10am and got a table no problem. If you sit upstairs, service could be spotty, we saw two tables leaving after waiting about 10 mins with no service and they were even locals, at least spoke Catalan (or Spanish, not sure) Churros with chocolate (it's the "drinking" one), coffee was good as well.
google avatar

Andrea W.

Yelp
I was hungry around breakfast time, so I looked online for where to go for good churros! Yelp and Tripadvisor led me to Dulcinea, and it was great. I got churros and chocolate, and even though I had to wait about 5-10 minutes for my food, they were great! The churros were piping hot and fresh, and the chocolate was thick and creamy, not too sweet. It was a great meal. My chocolate was lukewarm towards the bottom though; I'm not sure why that was. Anyway, I ate/drank all my chocolate, and the churros were good! I would recommend this place, though the place is a bit small with limited amounts of seating. Yay churros!

Gaurav G.

Yelp
I have been to this place a couple of times now and have always been satisfied to the core. It's old charm combined with awesome chocolate drinks keeps me coming back. I got the churro and Swiss chocolate and it was perfect. Try to get a spot to sit and check out the picture of the original shop design. Pretty cool

Yelp
My boyfriend and I actually came to this place for churros and chocolate when another place we wanted to try was closed for holiday, but we were not disappointed! The chocolate was just thick enough and the churros were perfectly cooked. The coffee was also yummy. We didn't even know there was an upstairs until we saw other guests going up there, but the downstairs was adorably traditional. So glad we went!
google avatar

Lissa B.

Yelp
A friend of mine recommended this place for churros con chocolate. The churros were fresh and the chocolate was nice and thick. Perfect for dipping. The servers with were quick and very nice. I highly recommend this place if you're craving good local eats. The prices are also pretty reasonable.

B H.

Yelp
Great service, great prices and delicious pastries & coffee. Best churros you'll find (not stale or old) with great quality chocolate and coffee.

East Bay R.

Yelp
I took every precaution to protect myself against the pickpockets in Barcelona. Little did I know that I would be cheated in a different way! Last month, I ordered several churro orders to go from Granja Dulcinea. I signed the credit slip assuming that the total was correct. However, when I checked the register receipt against the credit receipt while in the store, I noticed a ~4 Euro discrepancy, about double what I expected to pay. When I brought up the mischarge with the checker, he had the gall to say that I agreed to the charge because he presented me with the device to sign (in Spanish of course). Yes, I made the mistake of trusting this business and not checking the amount charged; it didn't occur to me that it would try to cheat me. If this business has a good reputation, it should fire the person who served me, but I didn't get his name, or is this how it does business? Oh, and by the way, my daughter loved the churros at Granja La Pallaresa more. They were lighter. Why should anyone frequent this a business that cheats its customers, especially when comparable, if not better alternatives are a short away on Carrer de Petritxol?
google avatar

Yelp
What a great place! Authentic (also visited by many locals) sweets, churros and coffee. Have been there late afternoon, was quite easy to grab a place. Friendly staff. Definitely worth a visit.
google avatar

Anja L.

Yelp
Good service, good price, nice location, open on sundays, hard to find a place because it's always full of people. Overall good, but i have tried better xuros..

Yelp
Very disappointing and over priced! Will not be returning there. They get 2 stars because the service was acceptable.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute little shop to stop in, rest awhile and order some churros and chocolate. Located near la iglesias del pi. The chocolate is very thick and rich but we would have liked it to be sweeter so we added sugar. The churros are great and just the right lightness.
google avatar

Yelp
Churros with Chocolate: awesome delicious!!! Also the location is very cute. Definitely worth visiting.

Sunny Y.

Yelp
Best chocolate drink in Barcelona . One star off is for the service because the staff there couldn't speak any English , but the food there is really awesome!!
