Nature and Parks in Chicago

"While Grant Park is technically part of the lakefront, most people don’t think about it like that. Instead, it’s the huge downtown park that sits between the lake and the buildings along Michigan Avenue. Grant Park has some great green space with incredible views of the skyline but is best known for hosting concerts, including the Lollapalooza music festival. The beautiful Buckingham Fountain in the middle of the park is one of the city’s most photogenic spots." - MATADOR_NETWORK

Yelp
It's a smaller unfenced dog park, compared to the others in the area. It has a nice track field to the left side of the creepy Beverly Cleary sculptures.

Yelp
Love this park! I lived across the street for 18 years and Grant Park, and all it has to offer, positively contributed immensely to my lifestyle. Lush shaded areas, walking paths, benches for reflecting, tennis courts, free concerts in the summer, a playground, and for me, the icing on the cake, an outdoor pool. For years I did my 3 mile walk on the track or around the neighborhood and through the park. My friends would laugh because I followed the same routine daily, but I enjoyed watching the transformation through the seasons, getting excited when spring bulbs would break through the ground or watching the leaves turn after crisp fall nights. It's so beautiful and serene throughout the seasons, and since it was right across the street, there was no excuse to miss my daily walk. Every summer Grant Park participates in Portlands Free Concerts in the Park series, a wonderful evening for families, couples, singles or groups. Bring your chair or blanket, pack a picnic, and sit under the trees and enjoy the symphony or a movie. The people watching is just as much fun! The crowds are friendly and it's such a sense of community. When this series begins, I know it's summer! For the kids, there is a playground area with lots of room for running around, spots for picnics, and a fountain. Parking is available on NE 33rd or the side streets for those not in walking distance. For me, the best part of the entire park is the pool, which was updated in 2017 with a new filtration system. For the past 15+ years, I do an hour of Lap swimming every single day for the three months the pool is open. They offer lanes for adult swim in the very early morning, at noon, and again around 5:30. While it does get super crowded, and often there are 5 or more other swimmers in the lane swimming in a circular pattern, I still love it. Swimming outdoors with the sun and fresh air, hearing the laughter of the kids, makes my workout go so much faster. It's my happy place! Inevitably one encounters what I call "lap rage" a few times a season. Those previous jr. olympics swimmers who think they own the lane and everyone has to get out of their way, but most are polite, know how to make it work, and recognize that the pool is for all of us, swimmers and kickboarders at every level. There are chairs and chaise lounges for those that arrive early. The open swim starts at 1:15 and goes until 3:10, a very limited time. This is because swimming lessons take priority and since swimming is a life skill, I can get behind this. On the weekends, open swim goes until 4:30. The bathrooms and showers are ok, what you would expect with the volume of people using the facilities daily. I wear shoes and do my best to not really look. There is a snack bar that sells popcorn and a cart that sells ices out front. I've never been to either but I do see the kids enjoying these treats. Even though I moved out of the Grant Park neighborhood 18 months ago, I drove to Grant Pool every single day last year to enjoy a swim. The Portland Public Pools used to stay open until mid September with limited hours since kids are back in school after Labor Day. For swimmers, this was our favorite time. We had all 5 lanes and it was so peaceful. No noise other than the sound of the swimmers gliding through the water. Last year they closed the pools before the end of August, which was such a bummer, claiming budget cuts. Let's hope they find money to support these pools for the entire three months. After our rainy winters, we want to get as much out of our dry and sunny months as possible.

Yelp
The statues of the Beverly Cleary characters Ramona the Pest, Henry Huggins and Ribsy the dog are worth seeing by themselves. Beverly Cleary's childhood books were set in Northeast Portland and a stroll around the neighborhood will lead you to Klickitat Street, where the characters resided. Cleary, who was originally from Yamhill, grew up in Portland and was the reason the stories were based there. Fans donated money for the bronze statues that were place in the park in 1995.

Yelp
What is not to love about this refreshing green space? Public tennis courts, a running track, swimming pool, picnic areas, play areas, lots of trees, grass, peace and serenity. I have always admired this park, driven by, had a picnic, but came recently to see the Beverly Cleary statues and I loved this park even more. It is close to the bus lines, and has parking on the streets nearby. During the school year, there are a lot of students walking through the park on their way to or from the school. Please keep that in mind, and keep your clothes on! There are high school students, adults and drunks to be seen making out (and hitting the ball out of the park, if you know what I mean). There are also homeless residing in the woods.

Yelp
I grew up going to this park all the time, and in 20 years it hasn't changed much. The play structure has had a couple of exceptionally minor upgrades (new slide), but otherwise it's basically the same. It's a decent size, with an area for dogs to run off leash, a beautiful Beverly Cleary fountain, playground, and it's home to Grant High School and Grant Pool. This park is very special to me personally. I knocked off a star because in effort to tap into my inner child, I took a ride on the swings. Mind you, I'm a petite adult weighing 100 pounds, but that thing did not feel secure. The bar the swing is attached to slid from side to side as I'd go back and forth. I was probably safe, but just the fear that I maybe wasn't was obnoxious. Plus, the bar adjusting its position on every swing annoyed me. Come on, Oregon taxpayers, upgrade our parks! Otherwise, this is a nice park. It's not as cool as Mt Tabor, maybe, but it's what defines the neighborhood!

Yelp
The park is lovely. Parking was tough when we went. The play area is nice, with benches for adults. The pool was crazy but I reviewed that separately. There is space for running, playing in the fountain, swimming, tennis, picnicking, and even hanging between trees in hammocks. It's a great space.

Yelp
Open until 12:01a this is our go-to park to bring our pups to. They've got a good sized unfenced dog area that our pups love. Whenever there are other dogs there they are so friendly just like their owners. We are new to town and have atually met some really nice people at the park that have given us tons of tips for places to grab a quality craft brew or bite of pizza. The park has tennis courts which we were excited to see b/c we do love hitting balls around. There's even a pool open to public pool. The park is huge with tons of little areas where you can just chill and take in the nature. We really like this park especially since it's right down the street from our new place.

Yelp
Not one of my favorite "parks" but I do like walking laps around the track and I feel safe here even when it's late evening and starting to get dark. It's hard to find parking when there are events going on (i.e. track meets)

Yelp
1. They have public tennis courts (six) 2. They have a kids playground and fun water feature. 3. It's woodsy. 4. Running track 5. Swimming pool 6. Shade from trees to cool off. 7. Snow cone vendor.

Yelp
Been to a handful of PDX's dog parks in the month I've lived here and so far this place stands out at particularly wonderful. *Dog owners: the spot for pups is unfenced and flanked by 2 streets so keep that in mind incase you have a distractible or adventurous pup.* Everyone I met at the dog spot was particularly friendly, familiar with one another (or at least acting that way), and remarkably positive. Felt like a real community. Some parks it can feel like you're just sticking to yourself, doing your own thing, but the people here were great and their awesome dogs were a clear extension of that! The other spots that make up this park - playgrounds, paths, sculptures, fountain, tennis & basketball courts, big conifers - and the fact that it is directly adjacent to a charming red brick school make it cute as hell. Looking forward to more good times at Grant!

Yelp
Grant Park is a really beautiful park. Large, lush, green, and filled with a ton of things for everyone in the family to do. That includes some of my favorite nighttime creepster activities such as: 1. Walking around (while intoxicated / inebriated on legal / illegal substances) and being completely freaked out by the Ramona statues. 2. Biking really really really fast around the track and convincing yourself that yes, you are a good, fast bicyclist no matter how many times those dudes (read: douches) on bikes roll up right in front of you at the stop light because they think you're a slow chick. 3. Star watching (*signal chorus of 'aww's*). 4. Star watching and making out. 5. Star watching and making babies. 6. Doing and/or selling drugs. (Not saying that I've done it myself....ahem!) 7. Rolling around in the grass. Naked. By yourself. With drugs. And then star watching. Creepy. 8. Sneaking into the pool! Naked! And not by yourself! And making babies! 9. Uhh...running out of things...playing basketball in the dark on the Nike court??? Nudity optional. 10. Doing whatever in the world you wanna do! Because I have never seen cops here late at night. Misfits and creepsters of the world unite at this glorious green space.

Yelp
This park is next to Grant high school but is open to the public, with 6 tennis courts, outdoor track with turf grass, and plenty of open grass fields, this is a nice place to set up a grass volleyball court, go for a run, or get some tennis in.

Yelp
Beautiful park. Lots of trees for shade if needed - which we did need. Playground and really cool water sculpture. Plenty of space to run. We brought our snacks to eat (donuts from Pip's) and sat by the water sculpture to eat, then a little playtime to run off the sugar.

Yelp
This is a beautiful neighborhood park with lots of great amenities. There is a rubber track sunken below the level of the street, great for running in any weather. There are wide stretches of lush lawn, shaded by many different kinds of lovely trees (I think I even spotted a Quaking Aspen!) and dotted with picnic tables and benches. There is a nice tennis court, and a large play structure area for kids. Also great: the Ramona and Henry statues as a tribute to Beverly Cleary's history in the area (she grew up in a house nearby, and her fiction is based in the neighborhood.)

Yelp
Great park. I wish there were more parks like this on the west side. Good size, plenty of green space, and large shady trees to enjoy a lazy afternoon. The Beverly Cleary characters are a nice touch. Lots of kids playing in the fountains and the other play area. My puppy even sniffed at Rigsby's rear end. There is a busy street, 33rd, but it is not a huge issue.

Yelp
Had the pleasure of visiting the park before a soccer game at the High School. A nice park with plenty of shade to escape the blazing sun. There's a pool here, but didn't check it out. The only real downside is the busy street that it's on and minimal parking, but I guess if you live nearby, that's not an issue.

Yelp
I love this park! I jog and walk here whenever I can. It's beautiful filled with trees and grassy areas. There are lots of friendly dogs, running around leash-free but with their responsible owners close by. It has a track, which means fewer injuries and year-round jogging for me! =] Also, if you're into sports that involve balls, there are tennis and basketball courts and grassy areas for you to throw a frisbee, play soccer, etc.

Yelp
I loooveee this park! The statues and water fountain thing is so cool I love to run the track as well and the off leash dog park in the back is nice and open!

Yelp
Such an awesome park. 2 big playground areas. Water feature surrounded by Beverly Cleary characters. Pool nearby. Clean bathrooms. What is not to like?

Yelp
Fun expansive park with everything from a pool to tennis courts to playgrounds to Beverly Cleary sculptures. Awesome for kids.

Yelp
I grew up nearby and attended Grant High School. This park is amazing. Lots of space to walk around. A dog park. Several playing fields. A community pool. Great tennis courts with night lighting. Children's play area. A full "track'n'field".

Yelp
This park with the school around it has a fun, campus feel. We are so lucky to have this park in our neighborhood.

Yelp
Such a vast, expansive park with so many resources. This place has it all--track, field, tennis courts, etc. There is a stunning amount of trees, as well. It's a really great place to take the family. I'll always be reminded of my high school years whenever I find myself here.

Yelp
I love this place and would frequent more often if I lived closer. It's within walking distance of the Hollywood library with plenty of pathways to walk, jog, or run. I felt very safe and it's a predictable route where you're not going to get lost if you're not paying close attention. You're probably going to catch a sports game of some sort going on as you make your way around. Also, you can maneuver your way around other walkers if you need. It's not the most peaceful because it's right next to the road and a school, but pretty decent.

Yelp
Other than the fact it's at a school, it's a nice place to walk/jog or play tennis. They also have a baseball diamond and a pool. We love the sculptures too.
