10 Best Craft Beer Spots in Vancouver | Condé Nast Traveler

"Opened in 1984, this is—as the story goes—the first craft brewery in Canada, the granddaddy of them all. Since being acquired by a subsidiary of Canadian brewing giant Molson in 2009, Granville Island's craft status is arguable; however, nothing about the pseudo-Mission style warehouse and tap room screams “corporate.” Authentic to the Island’s industrial roots, with its exposed pipes, the cavernous high-ceilinged room is defined by its massive timber posts and beams. Long communal tables and a busy stand-up bar foster interaction among tipplers; the space is inviting and warm, and it can also get loud. This is definitely a tourist spot; out-of-towners play a role in the scene here. But it’s also a magnet for locals who stop in after shopping for fresh meats, fish, and produce at the fabulous Granville Island Public Market nearby. You can get a drink at many places on the Island, so the locals who gravitate here are in it for the beer, which is also sold to carry-out in an adjoining retail store." - Guy Saddy

The staff was very knowledgeable and courteous, was unsure of what to get my waitress suggested the honey lager which did not disappoint. We are from Winnipeg, but the next time we visit Vancouver again we will be definitely coming back.

We’ve been to Granville Island Brewing a few times now and it never disappoints. The vibes are always great—super casual in the best way possible, with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. The drinks are consistently delicious, with a solid variety of beers on tap, and they have great taste in music (at least in my opinion!). It’s a perfect spot to unwind with friends after exploring the island. Highly recommend!

Google
Ordered the Mediterranean sandwich, not a lot of vegan options but honestly that's okay because this sandwich was sooo delicious. Usually when I see a Mediterranean sandwich, I'm hesitant to try because it's easy to make it bland. This one was not!! Every layer was perfectly seasoned and had so much flavour. It was super filling. The atmosphere was really nice, staff were friendly and the beer was good! Would come here again

Google
Great craft beer at reasonable prices, delicious veggie-packed dishes, and super friendly service. The terrace seating with that ocean breeze was absolutely perfect!

Google
Good food, great beer. The staff is friendly and you feel welcomed. I found out they have trivia nights on Tuesdays. It was a bit loud, so if you don’t want to participate maybe go before 6pm on that day. The only downside is that they close early, but I guess it’s not their fault- the whole Granville Isl dies on evenings during the work week (unfortunate and sad, but I guess that’s Vancouver - at least for now).

Google
I was walking around Granville Island, and suddenly I was thirsty. What should I spy, but this bar. Got a seat at the bar. The female company sitting at the bar was great. So we're the beets. I tried a few. The bar person was very helpful, and I ended up with a love of their beers.

Google
After grabbing a “To go” Tacone from Go Fish, I arrived at the Granville Island Brewery I asked the bar tender if I could order a beer to go OR could I sit and have my Tacone (showing the box) with my beer. He said i could first take a sit and a server would serve and it was ok to eat the Tacone. After ordering the beer and eating less than half of my Tacone another bearded guy comes over and stops me from eating my Tacone. I explained that I first took permission from the bartender before sitting and ordering my beer. I asked him IF I could just finish my bite. HE STOPPED ME saying “ THE CITY WOULD FINE THEM ? I asked him to call the bartender and explain or to No Avail. Wouldn’t bother coming here again

So many cute boutique stores & food. Right by the waterfront too! Would recommend

Yelp
Great food, beer and service. If u u our ever in Vancouver make your way to Granville Island.

Yelp
Nice and big spot for a beer after walking to Granville Island from Downtown Vancouver. Staff were very nice and kind. Beer was good and washrooms were clean! What else can you ask for?
google avatar

Yelp
Granville Island is a unique brewery with refreshing beer from all over BC. There is indoor and outdoor seating with options for a pint or a flight. I shared a flight and a pint with my husband and sister in law. My favorites were the raspberry ale and maize blonde. Both were light and super refreshing. I also loved the beer cards available for each taster. Service was great and you can purchase food and snacks. Highly recommend going after 6pm for $6 pints!
google avatar

Yelp
Had a bit of time, so stopped by around happy hour. They have their standard beers and their experimental ones. Lots of fun flavours to try on their experimental menu that is harder to source from the big box stores. Would recommend getting a beer or two as opposed to a flight during happy hour as there are no happy hour deals for flights. Service was a bit slow, but they got you your beers and left you alone, so can't complain too much.

Yelp
Super cute brewery at Granville Island. We came here with the family to try some local brews. We also had some appetizers House made focaccia and roasted cauliflower. Both were delicious. The spicy spread for the focaccia was delicious. And the roasted cauliflower was so good. My boyfriend had a margarita which I tasted, and it was strong and good. I tried the flight. And all the beers were so good. My favorite was the peach sour and I'm not even a sour beer drinker but all the beers were so good. Highly recommend and definitely would come back here.
google avatar

Lindsey W.

Yelp
Decided to try the flight (Cypress Honey Lager, Island Lager, English Bay Ale, False Creek Raspberry Ale) because there were too many good choices to choose from. The raspberry ale was my favorite. If you're here for the season of this ale, give it a try!

Yelp
I've been here a couple of times and each time I leave with feelings of...meh. The location is good and it's nice that there's a brewery on the island, but as someone who has visited many of the Vancouver area's breweries, this one is not in the top. It's a place to go for a beer, but if you are a beer connoisseur, just know what to expect. They also offer food but I've never had anything off the menu. Their flights are cool in that they have cards with info about each beer instead of just the cheesy pieces of paper with names you usually get, so I I'll give them props for that!

Yelp
Loved the beer .Good food service and atmosphere. Definitely would recommend going if in the area
google avatar

Karina M.

Yelp
We came here for lunch and had an amazing service experience. My husband was so excited to try some of the beers and totally bonded with our server who was just as passionate about the different beers as he was. We also got a couple of food items to share -- the foccaccia bread and the poutine. The poutine was a particular favorite but I think the beer is really where it's at here (unsurprisingly). Would definitely come back for a drink if we're in town again!

Melissa D.

Yelp
We got a four beer flight and the Polar Hop ipa was a really good beer my husband liked. He gave it a 8.5/10 which is pretty rare. Ashleigh was a great server. The sour was good and the atmosphere is really nice and close to the market.

Yelp
Food is on the sweat side for my tastes. Not at all bad though. Beer was OK. Few places that I have seen suckling pig sandwiches
google avatar

Julianne C.

Yelp
i wanted to love granville island brewing because of the very cute interior and the trendy branding. the beers were good, but in my opinion the food fell flat. the poutine was very mediocre, and i feel that it's not that hard to do poutine decently. the hipa hipa (pork belly, pineapple) flatbread was barely okay. if you're just coming for beers, i would recommend. however, based on the food we ordered, i can't recommend coming here for food. the inside is cute and bright, and service is standard (maybe a bit on the slow side). i might give it another chance next time!
google avatar

Yelp
I love craft beer so when we were visiting Vancouver's Granville Island, this place called to me for lunch. I love hazy IPAs so I did a sampling of all IPAs, 2 of which were hazy. They were all delicious as was the BLT with fries. My hubs and I both had the BLT. Service was fast and friendly. The atmosphere was also welcoming to all. There were families and groups of younger people, groups of middle aged folks etc. I would highly recommend stopping in for a flight or a pint!
google avatar

Kristen B.

Yelp
The service is fast and the food is amazing. The waiters are kind. Would recommend to everyone!
google avatar

Jaden B.

Yelp
I have been wanting to go here for so long so while I'm. An oh we I finally decided to! They only have one table in the whole pub that is low for kids and they so t have high chairs so I would not recommend coming here with children that require high chairs. The service was not great either. Food was okay though.

Yelp
Had this bookmarked on Yelp and we wanted to check this Brewery out. Well it's everything expected from great tasting beer! You can take a tour, go to the connecting store to make some purchase. We ordered beer and food: -Winter Ale 10/10 -Cauliflower bites 10/10 -Chops and Guac 10/10 Had a great experience well worth our stop to check this place out!!
google avatar

Cissy W.

Yelp
Great spot on Granville Island. We came mid week so didn't get the brewery tour but I've seen a brewery before so I'll recover~ For the beer... we each did a flight for tasting so we covered a lot of beer ground and found the terrain to be varied and worth the trip! Favorite ~~ Lions Winter Ale - distinctive, pleasant and good. Also the English Bay Ale. Nice place to relax, especially if you've been tromping around Vancouver and need a break.
google avatar

Keizzel C.

Yelp
Who doesn't love a local brewery!? Stopped by after grabbing lunch at Granville so I didn't get to check out the food but the tasting flights are the way to go. How they present the flight is so beautiful with all of the colors! During our visit they had dividers between tables even at bar seating so you get a little bit of privacy/separation for other groups. As you exit be sure to walk through the other room to grab some souvenirs and packs to go. Had to take a pack of the sours since we didn't get to try them out and enjoyed them.
google avatar

Riddhika J.

Yelp
A MUST STOP ON GRANVILLE island! I bookmarked this on yelp and had to check it out on my recent trip to Vancouver. The brewery is very nicely setup. You can take tour as well. The server was nicer to let me order the testing before ordering the pint. I went with Lion winter ale and Juice box Hazy IPA and both were outstanding beers. The cauliflower bites and Guac were great vegetarian options to pair the beer with. I would highly recommend this place
google avatar

Aracely B.

Yelp
Did I find my favorite beer in Canada? I think I did! If you are in Vancouver and looking for a brewery spot then make a stop here. They offer a beer map which contains a total of ten beers for you to try from. My favorite was winter ale that I bought a case to bring back into the states. They also amazing food for you to pair with. Service was great & made sure that we have everything that we needed. Nice place to rest, eat and enjoy after a long day of touring the city.

Yelp
Service was good and it was a fun place to hang out. We were seated in the overflow section, between the main dining area and the gift shop, which was actually perfect for us. The main dining area had a really strong fermented beer smell and it was super crowded (provided that it was a rainy wet day and this was one of the few places of warm dry indoor seating). We for four flights of beer, and a poutine. They don't have any cider here but their mango beer was very close to one. Service was friendly, as it is everywhere in Canada in my experience, and beer was reasonably priced. Poutine was not bad.
google avatar

Nick C.

Yelp
Granville Island Brewing is apparently the first microbrewery in Canada. Ended up getting a full flight map of their beers while visiting the market on Granville Island. The staff checked our vaccination cards and we were soon seated. We ordered the full flight map of all the beers they had available, along with some water. We got the beer pretty quick, but despite several reminders and requests, we never got the water. Beer was mostly OK, but none of the ones I tried were particularly memorable.
google avatar

Philip P.

Yelp
Had a wonderful experience here! Got to the brewery just at the right time since we were able to get a seat right when a table left. It was an outdoor table too which was exactly what we wanted since the day was nice and sunny. The staff was quite friendly and very helpful. We were going to just order 2 flights, but then we were suggested to order the Full Map option instead since the flights varied quite a bit. It was more worth it too, price-wise. We got an order of poutine as well, but had to wait for the gravy to be made since they ran out of that. The 30 minute wait was not a problem since we would be taking our time drinking the beers. The poutine definitely hit the spot after getting a bit buzzed from the beer. Very good combination by the way. Everything was pretty enjoyable. We did have to share our table a couple times since it was just 2 of us on a long bench table. Wasn't a big deal for us, but just letting everyone know in case you want more privacy. I would be down to do this again.
google avatar

Kay F.

Yelp
We came about 10 minutes before opening and there was already a lineup and the place was quickly filled within 15-20 minutes of opening (this was on the weekend). Given that it is on Granville Island, there are quite a few tourists and the prices reflect this. The beers were not bad and there was a good variety. I got the poutine and R got the BCO burger. It went well with the beers but nothing that was out of the ordinary. If looking for a food option on Granville Island, this would be a decent spot for drinks and food.
google avatar

Joy H.

Yelp
It's not the best place for beers or food but convenient for large groups of people to hang out and grab a bite. We had a large group so had to be separated since there isn't that much large party seating. The hostess was accommodating and just asked that we not go between the two tables which was fine. We got a round of flights and the mushroom burger (overly salty) with poutine. Overall good hang-out atmosphere which is what you come for.
google avatar

Yelp
Decent brewery in Granville Island, as the name suggests, with a system of ordering as many or as little variety of beer as you want in different sizes! We decided to do all the beer options in tiny cups just for the variety. This was $26 CAD if I recall, which is a lot of alcohol because it was roughly 50 ounces at least. We shared it amongst the 3 of us and there were many good beers including IPAs, stouts, etc but also a few misses, which is expected when we try majority of the offerings in this place. This place was fairly busy and a bit touristy, a bit loud but the ambience matches that of a standard brewery. It is a nice place to check out to take some pics regardless.
google avatar

Edward W.

Yelp
A really lively environment with really friendly waitstaff. Since there were three of us, we decided to do the full map, giving us a flight size pour for every beer on their menu. Our map contained 5 of their menu staples (top half of the pic), and 5 of their rotating taproom series (bottom half of pic). My personal favorites were the island lager and peach sour. Would definitely recommend coming here to take a break after walking around Grandville and shopping.

Kenna G.

Yelp
Beers were really good. Service was excellent. Everyone was friendly. Great vibe. The food was good too.

Yelp
Since we are in Granville Island, why not have some beer. We came to Granville Island Brewery for drinks and food. I ordered the bacon chedder burger and B got the Chicken burger. He said the chicken burger was super tasty. The chicken was fried to perfection and was super moist. They were quite generous in the sauce. He loved the bun that it was on. It was nice and had a nice crispy taste to it. For my bacon chedder burger, it was not the same. I ate half my burger and gave the rest to B. So I found the meat very dry but it was overpowered by lots of seasoning. There was not enough sauce and the chedder was hard to taste its existence. That is probably because the seasoning in the paddy over powered everything. I agreed with B that the bun was really tasty. I liked the fries that came with it. It was somewhat over seasoned as well. Overall, the food was ok. I would say the food would be like 3 stars. Also on top, we waited a while for the food to come. I mean it seemed longer than if we ordered at a restaurant than at a craft brewery. But the rating I am giving this place is more for its beer and not for its food. Food is just a side business for this craft brewery. The beer had here is not the same as if we got it at the liquor store or to go. It seems to taste better at the brewery. Not sure why. We ordered the winter ale here. This is a seasonal drink. Seems like it is around longer and longer each year. Also on our way, we got a case to go.

Tom M.

Yelp
From a beer point of view, I am surprised this place isn't rated higher. We tried 6 or 7 beers. All were very good. A good range of tastes. Nice facility.
google avatar

Juzenne C.

Yelp
the service was great and the beer selection was delicious. the food options are limited but if you're there for just drinks they're delicious! they have a rotating selection with reasonable prices. they're kid friendly and offer an indoor and outdoor area to eat. we ordered poutine to share which was delicious!
google avatar

CAScuba Y.

Yelp
I think this is the only micro brewery in Granville island, it has a dozen or so brew on the menu. I did a simple 4 sampler, ale, ipa, stout and a peach season brew. I have to say, I like micro brewery in Portland OR more but this is fine while visiting.
google avatar

Angela C.

Yelp
Arrived 5 minutes after opening on a Sunday and the place was packed. I don't know if they actually opened earlier or what but at least they had a table! The service was good for the most part and it does get a little loud inside. I'm not a beer drinker so I was happy to find they had a few wines on the menu. My husband loved the drinks he ordered. And my daughter loved that they had a Pringle's vending machine. We didn't order any food since we were stuffed from the market but the food did look very enticing. Next time I will come hungry. The place had small tables and long tables and high seating. They also had a little gift shop but it didn't have a whole lot. It wasn't too hard to find, it's actually located right in front of the children's market.
google avatar

Ryan C.

Yelp
Stopped by here on our way off the island just to taste some of the local beers. Got the full taster flight for two of us so we could try a little bit of everything. Also got their chips and dip of the day which was multicolored tortilla chips and artichoke dip. The chips were a little soggy with oil but the dip was good. Our favorite beers were the Lions Winter Ale that had a strong toffee and chocolate flavor, the refreshing West Coast IPA, and the small batch #2 which I don't remember what it was. The small batch ones rotate so check the chalkboard. Definitely a must go if you're looking for good beer on the island.
google avatar

Grace E.

Yelp
I have been coming here for years whenever I make a trip up to Vancouver. Sometimes the wait is over an hour but this time we lucked out and got a seat at the bar right away. While the food is quite good we just stuck to a flight to taste all 10 of their homemade brews. Our favorite was the hefe that had notes of banana which was very unique. The rotating sour was also a hit. Not sure why this place doesn't have better reviews on here because it is truly one of my favorite breweries ever. Always recommend it to people visiting Vancouver as it has unique and delicious beers that don't disappoint.
google avatar

Allester A.

Yelp
Came here on a Friday afternoon and they were incredibly busy. The wait time took over an hour before we were seated. Most likely due to the rainy day, no one wanted to leave the cozy and warmth of the brewery. The pandemic is possibly another reason but totally understandable. We ordered the Beer Flight and a pint. The drinks are: Northwest Pale Ale, Peach Sour, German Style Pilsner and Sip Easy Lager (for the flights, as well as a pint of the West Coast IPA. The drinks came pretty quick, didn't wait long. The ability to choose the drinks is great. Other places I've been to has a set menu and doesn't allow customizability. The poutine also came relatively quick after ordering. For the poutine, it could use more cheese curds. The cheese did melt perfectly after a while and isn't rubbery like other ones I've tried. Overall, I would recommend to check out this brewery if you're ever in the area and looking for a drink (or two).

Yelp
Visited on a Monday evening while staying across the street two weeks ago. Or, I should say, we tried to visit. We walked in ~7:15 PM for a quick drink before the bar closed at 8 PM. Other groups were still working on their beers. A waitress came up to us and, before letting us speak, said "Sorry, we close at 8 and are already doing last call." Then she ran/walked away. I've been to a lot of bars and never experienced service this rude. How long does she think it takes to finish one beer? If she had let us order during last call, we would have been done with time to spare. As a person of color, I can't help but wonder if the white female server turned us away because of our race. Very disappointing experience, especially on Granville Island where people are generally very hospitable. Do yourself a favor and go literally anywhere else. We ended up at Tap & Barrel instead and had a great experience there.
google avatar

Kiana C.

Yelp
Granville Island Brewing calls themselves the first microbrewery in Canada. I don't know if that's true, but I know they make good beer! My boyfriend and I got a flight, so we got to try various beers. We got the 10 beer flight which comes with 6 of their more well-known beers and 4 beers that they are brewing in the taproom only (taproom specials) i.e. are not sold commercially or manufactured. I really liked all of their 6 more famous beers, especially the Lions Winter Ale and the English Pale Ale. The Lions Winter Ale has a deep chocolate flavor and is very smooth. The English Pale Ale reminds me of a cross between a Blue Moon and a typical lager - very light but still super flavorful. The ambience is really nice, as my boyfriend just sat inside and played cards and talked. It's pretty casual and our service was great. Do not plan to bring any food from Granville Island Market here, as they don't allow outside food to be consumed. I would recommend getting a meal at the market and then coming here after, as the food menu didn't look that good here.
google avatar

Matthew I.

Yelp
Ive never been in this brewery for as long as I've been here in Vancouver, but I had a very pleasant time. The atmosphere on a Sunday afternoon is relaxed and it wasn't as busy as you'd expect. I didn't catch his name, but the young man who was waiting on us was very efficient and there was a nice balance of witty banter and service. I'd spend another quiet afternoon here for sure.
google avatar

Mikayla M.

Yelp
Yet another craft brewery we went too but this time with 10 types of beer! Customer service was excellent. The beer was great as well as the chicken sandwich. Ordered: 10 flight beer map tasting ($18 CAD), chicken sandwich ($15 CAD)
google avatar

Bumble H.

Yelp
The beers are average, the poutine is too runny. The worst thing seems to be the shift manager very rude and outright hostile toward us. Perhaps it's a racial discrimination thing but the waitress seems to be much more sympathetic toward us since she is also an ethnic minority person also. This will be the last time we come to this brewery.
google avatar

Karl S.

Yelp
First time in Vancouver - great spot for really good local beer and snacks - a nice break from walking all afternoon on Granville Island. I'll go back next time I'm in town - thanks!
google avatar

Lyla M.

Yelp
Owned by Molson's and currently (July 17) on strike so it's closed. Too bad as the island is really crowded with thirsty tourists (me!). Hopefully they cough up a raise and start serving.
google avatar

Toni Rose D.

Yelp
My best friend recommended checking this out while in Vancouver and I'm so happy that we did. It's smaller than what I'm used to when it comes to breweries. There was a line when my partner and I got there, but we didn't wait too long. It was on a beautiful Saturday afternoon so it made sense that this place would be packed. That's always a good sign. We didn't know which one we wanted to drink, and there's an option to try them all ($20 cad). The order was perfect. We were able to decide which ones were our favorite, and it confirmed that I like light beer more than dark beer. We ended up drinking all of it except for two beers. They do have a menu with all the beers and each glass is put on top of whatever they are. That way, customers know which one they're trying. Such a cool way of doing that. The service was on point. They were super attentive and friendly. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Shannon S.

Yelp
This is a nice little brewery on Granville Island with a few seats at the bar, a few more communal seats/benches at tables and a gift shop. They offer food along with their menu of beers and beer flight sampling options. The beers I sampled were all good and the crowd seemed to be having a good time in here. Fortunately I seemed to have visited after the busiest part of the tourist season so there was no wait to be seated. Service was friendly, professional and attentive. Overall this is certainly a great spot to visit while you are on Granville Island.
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
I love visiting breweries whenever I travel, so I had to stop in when I was visiting the Granville Island Public Market. I was seated promptly and got to try a small flight. Unfortunately, the beer was just average overall and would not be anything I would come back to try again. The flight was $7.50 for four 5 oz beer, so it was a good deal overall though. I was here a few years ago, so I hope their beer quality has improved since it's a great location.

Yelp
After arriving to Granville Island by Aquabus, my bf and I walked around the Granville Market and ended up at the Granville Island Brewing. We got lucky and were instantly seated even though there was a line slowly starting to form. I'm usually not a beer person, but I've never had Canadian ale before, so my bf and I decided to get a flight to sample at least 4 beers. We ordered the Summer Ale, Hefeweizen, Cream Ale, and Raspberry Ale. I'm surprised to say that I actually really enjoyed the seasonal Summer Ale and the Raspberry Ale because of their low IBU. I learned that the higher the IBU, the more bitter the ale is. Both ales tasted refreshing, and a little tart from all the lively tropical fruit notes. Overall, Granville Island Brewing is a great place to chill and rest before leaving Granville Island for the day. Even though beer is not usually my drink of choice, I am surprised to say that I'm open to going to more breweries in the future, just because this experience was wonderful. Our waitress was also very friendly and gave us really good suggestions.

Yelp
Beer for my tired feet, please. I managed to arrive at the right time where there was a short queue and I managed to snag a two-top table instead of getting stuck at the bar. That was awesome because I got to use my laptop that I'd been lugging around to scope out next steps and even write a Yelp review with their free, speedy wifi. It's a really cool location with high ceilings and on a hot day like today, they had the fans moving the air around. With all that space, the hubbub of the crowds really wasn't too bad at all. I chose a four beer flight and while the Hefeweizen had a strong flavor of lemon and maybe even banana to it, the Maple and the Raspberry were both rather low flavor. I wouldn't have those two again but the Hefe was great. I also got a pizza, which was more flatbread but still very tasty and topped nicely with I don't know what and a drizzle of balsamic that was very delicious. Yum with the beer! A good spot with about a dozen different beers (some people were drinking wine).

Yelp
This is a beautiful location with really nice indoor seating area that is clean and spacious. The staff is really nice and the beers were amazing. We had the West Coast IPA and it is one of the best ones that I've ever had. Coming from someone that has had a lot of IPAs from so many different breweries. This place opened up at noon and we got there a little bit earlier but it is surrounded by a really nice walking area so we definitely enjoyed the walk. Their beers were definitely worth waiting for. They do offer food but we did not try anything. This please got really busy, it was almost like 50 people walked in within the 10 minutes of their opening time, that says a lot about a place. Even tho they were so busy, their servers were friendly and efficient. I would live to visit this place again.
