7 Best Train Rides in Texas — Vintage Cars and Scenic Views Included

"The Grapevine Vintage Railroad operates 1920s Victorian coaches that whisk passengers away for a ride along the Cotton Belt Route. On board, guests can lounge in plush, red velvet seating with gilded armrests while looking out at beautiful landscapes from the massive picture windows. It’s even available for special events for the ultimate train lover’s private party. Note the train is open for rides from March to December, closing each January and February for regular maintenance." - Travel + Leisure Editors

All I can say is WOW! So great. I went on the train for Christmas and that elf performer, what’s his name: FROSTY, he was INCREDIBLE! He was energetic, the actual size of an elf, got all the families up and singing, and boy oh boy was he funny! HILARIOUS. Forget the cookies and milk, I’d go just to see him crack some jokes. He really reminds me of myself — anyways, way to go Frosty, whoever you are. Keep up the awesome work!

Wowza!😯 This is great fun! It might be the best of the train rides I've had so far. 🙌🏻 The cars are beautifully it restored.👨🏻‍🔧 There is entertainment on board.🎭 Also food and drinks, and a bar! It's a long train ride! Unlike some of the smaller scenic railroads I've been on this train shares tracks with the commuter and freight trains. The price is reasonable, the food and drink on board is reasonably priced too. This is nice because when you get to the yesteryear of the stockades,🤠 reasonable pricing is the thing of the past....🤑😣🫢

Like other said The Cotton Belt Route excursion needs to be upfront about its duration. I see on the website is it take 45 minute train ride. But it end up drags on for 2.5 hours one way and another 2.5 hours back with 5 stops and waiting. We were stuck on the tracks for ages, This kind of delay is ridiculous and should be clearly advertised. We drive with 2 kids from Houston from 7:30, thought do 45mins drive and go back check in hotel at 4pm. But NO. When we at Fort Worth Stockyards, they tell me go back before 4pm but other told my husband they leave at 2:45. My kids hungry so we go to do food Togo and eat little outside n back 2:12 at station, but nothing there, so we were waiting until 3 pm. They arrived with more people, but doesn't for going back. At thats time, they tell us wait until 3:35. Thats when we feel we become homeless and stand by at the station every 30minn for waitting with 2 boxes of foods on our hands (cause we do Togo for quick not DINE IN) 3:35 become to 4:30 and end up by 5 pm. Why do you guys didn't give us a at least 2 hours notice? Why it has to 30 mins and 30mins after? We just so scared for miss the train and hang around the station, so scare for go anywhere. We just like pay money for food nearby and run back quickly to station. We are end up check in at our hotel at 8:30 pm (4hours late than i thought) . This is worst of my experience ever. Fort Worth Stockyards had a lot of restaurants n bar around. The idea of drinking n watching people and car show around look fun. The have a rink in there also But with ridiculous delay and miss information train times like this, I don't think I can convince my family for go back anymore.

I’ve done two different ride experiences with them, and both were cute. This is an activity that allows you to experience vintage trains, do something different, and enjoy the ride. They ride on tracks used by other working trains, so you may have to stop and wait sometimes - that’s not a big deal, though, because you’re still on the train! 🙂 I recommend the 45 minute ride for families with small children - it’s just enough time for the fun experience without becoming monotonous for them. If you want an activity that’s going to last about half a day, get the ride from Grapevine that drops you off at the Stockyards for a couple of hours. In general, it’s a cute thing to do with visiting family and friends.

It's been a few years since we've taken this Train it was an incredible journey then and now. We had company in from out of state and we wanteted to do something special. However if you are looking for a quick trip down to Fort Worth and back to Grapevine. it's not so fast. Be prepared for a potentially longer yet rewarding journey to Fort Worth it used to be like 45 minutes now there's several stops because they are sharing that train track. It's a truly uplifting change of pace to bring out-of-town guests to do something extraordinary such as ride this vintage train. The Vintage train hires actors who reenact a train robbery with humor. It is really a wonderful comfortable way to see the city sights and let someone else do the driving. From Grapevine to Fort Worth we were able to see the Stockyards and the cattle run. We also saw one reenactment of a gunfight. It was definitely reminiscent of the old west of the turn of the century.

Hi! I was part of the delayed excursion Sunday, and I gotta say- I still loved it! These folks really do try their best to keep things running smoothly, even with dispatch seeing incorrect signals. 27 other trains were also backed up the same day ours was! Thank you grapevine railroad crew!! This railroad excursion is fun, but might be a little iffy for those with very little children- the train noises are loud at times, and there are lights in each cabin that change colors quickly (they’re very small, a strip toward the roof). You’re encouraged to remain seated, so if your kiddos are runners, this might be hard! Sensory wise, it’s a pretty calm experience and there’s even little skits thrown into your journey. Overall, prepare in case of delays (because to my knowledge freight trains take higher priority in dispatch, and that’s what causes it? Could be wrong!), try to keep away from fixed reservations in the Stockyards in case of said delays. There are restrooms onboard the train, snacks, alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages as well. Know before you go, too: the first class cars have AC, coach does not. It’s a very darling attraction with a hard working crew.

Review: Grapevine Vintage Railroad to the Fort Worth Stockyards Our experience on the Grapevine Vintage Railroad was a memorable one, with both highs and a few small hiccups. We started off with about a 45-minute late departure, but the staff made up for it by offering free refreshments, which was a nice gesture. The train itself runs at a slow pace, and honestly, there isn’t too much scenery to see along the way. That said, my 3-year-old grandson—who is completely obsessed with trains—absolutely loved every second of it, which made the ride more than worth it. One of the highlights was the cast of characters, who stayed in role from the waiting area in Grapevine all the way through the ride. They interacted with guests and kept things fun and lighthearted, making the experience feel more immersive. Onboard, they even served beer and wine, which was a pleasant surprise. When we arrived at the Stockyards, the timing worked out perfectly—we got there just in time for the cattle roundup. Even though we left late, the railway gave us our full two hours at the Stockyards, which showed real thoughtfulness. The train ride back departed and arrived right on time. The only negative note came on the return trip, where a sewage odor from the restroom in our first-class car was noticeable. The crew did their best to manage it by spraying it down, which helped some, but it was still unpleasant. Thankfully, the cast continued entertaining us the whole way back, keeping the mood upbeat. A few tips for future riders: • Legroom is tight. If you’re tall, you’ll want to spread out or buy two rows and sit diagonally (cadi-cornered). Sitting 3–4 adults knee-to-knee in a row isn’t very comfortable. • Bring snacks and entertainment for little ones, but don’t overdo it—time goes by faster than you think. • You have the option of taking the train one way and Ubering back if that works better for your plans. Overall, for my group of four, it was a great experience. Despite some negative reviews I’ve seen online, I found it well worth the trip. It’s a fun outing for families, a group of friends, or even a date, and my grandson’s excitement made it especially memorable.

A great value for the money. 6 hours of entertainment for under $30. The train and cars are fantastic! Vintage (100 years old) but in great shape. During the summer months choose an air conditioned car. Not much more money. The view along the way isn’t much to brag about, but they have a team of entertainers who do a fantastic job making the time pass. You spend 2 hours at the Ft. Worth Stockyards (the perfect amount of time). The timing works out for you to see the longhorns parade through the street. This train ride is the real deal! You should go.
