Canberra, Australia: Where to Eat and Drink

"A nineteenth-century inn in Gundaroo that has been transformed into an excellent restaurant where the tasting menu is matched to wines from the Canberra District." - Nina Caplan

A wonderful lunch in a charming heritage setting, with lovely local wines, delicious food and attentive service. We also enjoyed a wine tasting afterwards at the Gundog cellar doors, in the original hotel stables, with alfresco seating overlooking the gardens. We were proud to bring our interstate visitors here. It was a leisurely day out in the country. Highly recommend.

Only 25 minutes' drive from Canberra's north, Grazing restaurant impressed me even before I having the entree, because the view along the way is stunning especially when you visit during autumn season. When I parked at the front and got out from my car, I was again amazed by the 🍁 autumn view around with yellow-green tall trees standing along the zigzags of Yass River - so check the pictures!!! All these already gave me a good mood to start dining before I walked in the door! Regarding the food, it's of an Australian country style and the toasted lamb with skin was definitely a must try - crispy outside, tender inside, and chewy but soft connective tendon in between. I like their desserts the most because they use a wide range of starchy vegetables, like taro and sweet potato, in combination with fruits and nuts, to create a sweet enjoyment but still keep the concept of healthy dining in mind. This is what I most appreciated. Great job and I will certainly come back, come back, and come back...

Grazing is an absolute must visit for any foodie. The combination of flavours in the rabbit pie, topped with fresh truffle was just divine. We’ve visited more than a dozen times and every time, be it lunch or dinner, the food has been exquisite and the staff consistently attentive and welcoming - special shout out to Lily! Hoping to come back for their special Duck & Pinot event next month. Couldn’t recommend more highly - Kate & Scott

I don’t know how long I have been coming to eat at Grazing – too long to remember, probably. Who can forget the fabulous fish pie? It has always been good, but on this visit it seemed to be even better. We took a couple of visiting Melbourne friends there to sit near the open fire in a Canberra winter. When I heard the list of specials I was impressed. There was a rabbit pie – who cooks rabbit anymore? I haven’t eaten rabbit since I lived in Adelaide, which counting back means I haven’t eaten rabbit for almost 30 years. Given the out of control number that seem to be running everywhere, especially in Canberra, we should probably be eating rabbit every second day, just like in the 1930s. Needless to say the rabbit pie was exceptional. The other new feature was a series of small appetisers, what the French call amuse bouche. One of our guests tried the prawns on a brioche bun and was suitably impressed. I don’t normally order lamb because in some restaurants it can be a bit disappointing, but I had a Gundagai lamp rump with anchovy butter, celeriac, braised cavalo nero and olives and that was a definite success. All in all all our many and varied dishes – all excellent – managed to keep us all well content until our next visit.

We had a most wonderful and delightful lunch seated in a perfect room with a fire. The food was perfect every morsel delicious and the wine we choose matched perfectly. We all indulged and finished with desert. All four agreed that clafoutis made with quince was the best. The service was sublime and our whole afternoon a simple delight. Thank you to the chefs and marvellous wait staff. Your really have a most perfect restaurant

Loved dining at a local place. Staff and our waiter was amazing and knows all the local facts and details of the restaurant even got to try his homemade jam! Place by the fire was perfect on a cold rainy day!

Well worth a visit! The food was delicious and my Wagu beef with peppercorn sauce hit the mark. The salty caramel dessert was very moorish. Found the mushroom entree somewhat lacking in flavour but it didn’t spoil the experience.

Amazing lunch at Grazing for our wedding anniversary. Food was abundant and delicious and the service was super friendly and the team were attentive and helpful. Loved the vibe and the log fire was great.

Yelp
We were recommended Grazing by a couple dining at the table next to us when we had finished our dinner at Sage in Canberra, so we made a booking for the following Sunday at lunch time on our way back to Sydney. Grazing did not dissappoint. We had the Pork and Salmon as entrees, the Duck, Beef Cheeks and a side of Greens for the main course and the Quince Tarte Tartine to finish off. All was well presented and full of flavour. An added bonus was the P.J. Reid Pale Ale on tap, brewed for Grazing by a Canberra brewer. All in all, highly recommended.

Yelp
Our favorite place to go in Canberra isn't actually in Canberra....just 25 minutes north in the quaint little village of Gundaroo, New South Wales "Grazing" never disappoints. If you go in the summer, they have a special menu, which makes it cheaper than most posh places in Canberra (and it's better than all with the exception of the 2617 group's offerings. On the summer menu, don't miss the Ox Cheek and if you can tell me what the unexpected flavor is, please PM me. Great wine selection. Worth the trip. Recommend staying our there, too. Other fun, casual places around, too.
