Our Readers' Favorite Islands in the World of 2023

"The Great Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches for 1,400 miles off Australia’s northeastern coast, is home to the world’s largest collection of coral reefs – almost 3,000 in all. It’s also home to a group of roughly 900 islands that T+L readers have voted their favorite in the world. A T+L reader who has more than once stayed on Hamilton Island said, “The physical beauty of the area is without equal. Just love the island and the people of Australia." - Travel + Leisure Editors

Visiting the Great Barrier Reef was an unforgettable experience. The two-hour journey from Cairns to the reef was worth it, but it was sad to see the damage that has been done to the reef over the years. While some parts of the reef are recovering, much of it still shows signs of stress. Despite this, the vibrant marine life made the trip memorable, including a surprising sighting of a shark. The weather was sunny with a gentle breeze, perfect for exploring, but it also reminded me how important it is to protect this natural wonder for future generations.

The greatest natural wonder of world, this chain of islands made by corals. So when you visit Australia you got to see this place. They have ferries from cairns taking you to the reef. When we got to the island we did see the reef's marine life and corals from glass bottom boat and from the submarine boat. They also had the ocean walk but due to the weather conditions the operation was closed. We did enjoy the playing at the ref islands beach. It takes about 45 minutes to and fro from the reef island to cairns reef fleet terminal. Those who feel sea sickness should have a light breakfast or lunch before boarding the ferry. You just enjoy looking at the blue green shallow waters of the reef. Great place.👌🏼👍🏻

The Great Barrier Reef is the largest collection of coral reefs in the world, spanning over 1,400 miles. It’s so large that it can be seen from space, and it’s among one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World. It is the place to go diving, offering a one-of-a-kind display of underwater life.🌊🐟🐠🐳🦈🦞🦑🐙

The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system composed of over 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands stretching for over 2,300 kilometres (1,400 mi) over an area of approximately 344,400 square kilometres (133,000 sq mi). The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queensland, Australia. The Great Barrier Reef can be seen from outer space and is the world's biggest single structure made by living organisms. This reef structure is composed of and built by billions of tiny organisms, known as coral polyps. It supports a wide diversity of life and was selected as a World Heritage Site in 1981. CNN labelled it one of the seven natural wonders of the world. The Queensland National Trust named it a state icon of Queensland. A large part of the reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which helps to limit the impact of human use, such as fishing and tourism. Other environmental pressures on the reef and its ecosystem include runoff, climate change accompanied by mass coral bleaching, dumping of dredging sludge and cyclic population outbreaks of the crown-of-thorns starfish.[10] According to a study published in October 2012 by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the reef has lost more than half its coral cover since 1985. The Great Barrier Reef has long been known to and used by the Aboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and is an important part of local groups' cultures and spirituality. The reef is a very popular destination for tourists, especially in the Whitsunday Islands and Cairns regions. Tourism is an important economic activity for the region, generating over AUD$3 billion per year. In November 2014, Google launched Google Underwater Street View in 3D of the Great Barrier Reef. A March 2016 report stated that coral bleaching was more widespread than previously thought, seriously affecting the northern parts of the reef as a result of warming ocean temperatures. In October 2016, Outside published an obituary for the reef; the article was criticized for being premature and hindering efforts to bolster the resilience of the reef. In March 2017, the journal Nature published a paper showing that huge sections of an 800-kilometre (500 mi) stretch in the northern part of the reef had died in the course of 2016 due to high water temperatures, an event that the authors put down to the effects of global climate change. The percentage of baby corals being born on the Great Barrier Reef dropped drastically in 2018 and scientists are describing it as the early stage of a "huge natural selection event unfolding". Many of the mature breeding adults died in the bleaching events of 2016-17 leading to low coral birth rates. The types of corals that reproduced also changed, leading to a "long-term reorganisation of the reef ecosystem if the trend continues.

One of Australia’s most remarkable natural gifts, the Great Barrier Reef is blessed with the breathtaking beauty of the world’s largest coral reef. The reef contains an abundance of marine life and comprises of over 3000 individual reef systems and coral cays and literally hundreds of picturesque tropical islands with some of the worlds most beautiful sun-soaked, golden beaches. Because of its natural beauty, the Great Barrier Reef has become one of the worlds most sought after tourist destinations.A visitor to the Great Barrier Reef can enjoy many experiences including snorkelling, scuba diving, aircraft or helicopter tours, bare boats (self-sail), glass-bottomed boat viewing, semi-submersibles and educational trips, cruise ship tours, whale watching and swimming with dolphins.

GREAT BARRIER REEF. Just stunning! One of the worlds great wonders, we have so far dived or snorkelled at five different spots on the Reef from north to South and each and every one is different. Depending on the weather and the time of year you can expect to see different things. You simply CANNOT come to this part of the world and not undertake one trip out, be it snorkelling or diving. There are so many tour operators who can show you great places to visit and if water is not your thing, there are plenty of glass bottom boats you can view the reef from.

Unfortunately I'm not living there 😕 in The Great Barrier Reef it is a site of remarkable variety and beauty on the north-east coast of Australia. It contains the world’s largest collection of coral reefs, with 400 types of coral, 1,500 species of fish and 4,000 types of mollusc. It also holds great scientific interest as the habitat of species such as the dugong (‘sea cow’) and the large green turtle, which are threatened with extinction. UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITES

Yelp
No question this is a must see at least once in your lifetime. As one of the wonders of the world, the Great Barrier Reef is a sight to behold. The turquoise clear waters allows you to view the reef from above via helicopter or plane, on top via boat and below via scuba or snorkel. We took a Cruise Whitsunday boat to the Heart Pontoon and spent the day scuba diving there. You can jump in with a stinger suit and snorkel as well. The reef seemed to be plenty shallow and the water is so clear, snorkeling is a great option. The heart pontoon also has underwater observatories and a semi submarine you can cruise around and enjoy the reef without getting wet. The best way to enjoy the reef is through a scuba dive! You see such amazing vibrant colors of coral and fishes! The fish aren't afraid and will swim right up to you. We had a large one just swim pass my hand and I felt it up close and personal. Amazing! The water was still pretty chilly with a stinger suit and wetsuit, but expected cause we're in the middle of the ocean. We also took a short helicopter ride from Heart Pontoon to see Heart Reef and the reef overhead, and it was totally worth it! Photos just don't do it justice!

Yelp
My husband and I went to Australia for our honeymoon and spent a couple of days in Cairns to tour the Great Barrier Reef. What a stunning and beautiful place it is, and so sad to see the Great Barrier Reef bleaching and disappearing due to global warming! Prior to my arrival in Australia, I thought the Great Barrier Reef was just a short swim away from shore, but had no idea that it takes anywhere from 45 minutes up to 1.5+ Hour each way by boat to get out to the Reef! You will depart out of Cairns or Port Douglas. We reserved 2 separate catamaran snorkel tours (Reef Magic and Poseidon) to visit both the inner Reef as well as the outer Agincourt Reef. The inner Reef tour (Reef Magic) was only a 45 minute boat ride each way more for families with young children and family-friendly activities. The outer Agincourt Reef tour (Poseidon) was a more adult-oriented tour 1.5 Hour boat ride out each way on very rough waters. I will never forget the deep hue blues and greens of the Great Barrier Reef, and the plethora of colorful fish and underwater life we saw. The most memorable part was meeting our Aussie friend, a super friendly Maori Wrasse swim right up to us like a puppy! If you are an outdoor adventurist and can visit the Great Barrier Reef before it disappears, go! It's so sad how global warming is depleting this natural beauty. I am so grateful my husband and I got to see and swim in the Great Barrier Reef in our lifetime. Tip: the waters are very, very rough in the Great Barrier Reef. I along with many other tourists got seasick. Make sure you take your seasickness medication before the boat ride, and bring any meds needed to make the long boat ride a pleasant experience.
