Our Readers' Favorite Islands in the World of 2025

"A chain of islands off Queensland—including rainforest-fringed Fitzroy Island and the white-sand Whitsundays—celebrated for world-class reef snorkeling and diving; visitors are encouraged to choose low-impact, reef-friendly experiences to protect the vulnerable ecosystem." - Hannah Walhout Hannah Walhout Hannah Walhout is a senior editor at Travel + Leisure, where she edits the Discoveries section of the print magazine and develops longer stories focusing on food, wine, and spirits. This New Platform Is Making It Easier to Visit Australia's Great Barrier Reef Responsibly

"This World Heritage Site stretches roughly the length of the U.S. west coast and contains an extraordinarily dense concentration of marine habitats—nearly 3,000 coral reefs, 300 coral cays, 600 continental islands, and 150 inshore mangrove islands—making up about 10 percent of the planet’s coral reef ecosystems. The reef has suffered major recent damage from rising ocean temperatures, pollution, and shifting climate patterns, including four massive coral bleaching events within seven years. Conservation and visitor-education efforts have been stepped up through programs that teach best practices with videos and fast facts, partner with travel platforms to offer incentives, and highlight more than a hundred eco-certified local operators to encourage more sustainable, respectful visitation." - Rachel Chang Rachel Chang Rachel Chang is a travel and pop culture journalist who contributes to Travel + Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Lonely Planet, and more. The Great Barrier Reef is an exceptional place to see. We spent several days on a live board diving the outer reef during the day and night, and saw the largest corals we had ever seen, plus turtles and lots of fish. Snorkeling is also available for non divers

This review refers specifically to Fitzroy Island. It is a beautiful place, sheltered waters suitable for snorkeling and coral reef close to shore. The resort is great although not perfect. Range of accommodation from camping to beach bungalows and our choice hotel style apartments. We were on the top ( 3rd ) floor. Views are good and there is a lift. Service is good, they have a lot of young, attractive back packer people from various backgrounds working there. Foxy's bar is pick of the eateries, although not open for dinner. Zephyrs restaurant was a disappointment, expensive quite ordinary food. The pool bar has an abbreviated menu at reasonable prices. The pool is great, as is the swim up bar. There are walking trails if you're feeling fit and lots of beautiful scenery.

Fabulous..a must do! Stay overnight or for a few days on a boat to enjoy to the full. Snorkelling amazing..soo many fish. Seeing the coral standing out of the water when the tide was low ..fascinating. Watching the sunset. Too many wonderful things & hard to describe the experience..just do it! ♥

Venture out into the ocean for a vigorous engagement and your experience will be challenging but worth it. Separately, you can use one of the islands as your base and entertain a more relaxed adventure.

If your Up here in Port Douglas, you need to walk our amazing 4 Mile Beach.. You may see pods of dolphins or on low tide you will see Sting Rays, fish or a cheeky sneaky crocodiles.. Always swim in the nets, safest place to play...

We had an incredible opportunity to stay on a private island - one of the few still able to be bought and sold in the park. Unbelievably beautiful experience, very restful. We walked the shoreline, collected the flotsam and jetsam, seem in the pool, got freaked out about the huge crocodile tracks in the mud, watched the moon rise on one side of the island, and the sun set on the other. Delightful. Take the opportunity of you can of visiting.

Visited Magnetic Island and the place was beautiful. Have recently moved to Townsville and plan on exploring much more of the reef over my stay. The views are stunning so far
