My husband and I, 65-year-old world travelers, typically book small boutique hotels when traveling in foreign countries because they tend to offer more authentic cultural experiences than run-of-the mill corporate hotels. So when we came across Great Huts when researching places to stay in Jamaica, we knew we had to check it out. Having just returned from a delightful week at Great Huts, all I can say is "WOW!"||||The rooms and grounds of Great Huts are so unique that I'm not even going to try to offer a description. Please look at the attached photos and peruse the website. As opposed to the more rustic huts, we chose to stay in Africana House, which is a large villa with four separate suites, an enormous seating area, kitchen, and pool. Africana House is aptly named as it is filled with African-themed art. We were upstairs in the Yoruba Room and absolutely loved it. ||||Over the course of our stay, we had the pleasure of spending time with the owner, Dr. Paul Rosenberg. Should he be in residence during your stay, be sure to speak with him and get the story of how Great Huts came to be. Dr. Paul is such an interesting man who goes out of his way to make everyone feel welcome. If you're lucky, he might even sing to you in Yiddish! Also, don't miss the Saturday night show with local dancers, drummers, and lots of singing. ||||A review of Great Huts would not be complete without mentioning the food and staff. The official menu is somewhat limited, but Chef Lloyd is happy to prepare additional traditional Jamaican dishes such as curry goat with advanced notice. We arrived at Great Huts about 3 weeks after Hurricane Melissa devastated other parts of Jamaica, so a large variety of fresh fruit was not available. Overall, the food was very good and abundant. As for the staff, we found everyone to be cheerful, helpful, friendly, and inquisitive. They are all hard workers and strive to make their guests feel comfortable and well taken care of. ||||I highly recommend a week's stay at Great Huts. There are plenty of attractions to visit nearby (Frenchmen's Cove, Reach Falls, Port Antonio), but you can easily spend the entire time just chilling at the beach where the swimming is great. Kick back, turn off your phone, read a book, swing in a hammock, sip on a cocktail, RELAX!
