The roof top terrace is so relaxed and comfy with staff very helpful and attentive, it's worth a visit just for that! The hotel has character with unique decor throughout. I stayed in the baby grand room and expectations were surpassed with an overall extremely enjoyable experience. Didn't get to try it but the afternoon tea looks amazing!

This is quite a unique/bespoke hotel that offer something more than just a plain dull room to hold a wedding. Firstly, the wedding was handle brilliantly, great co-ordination and staff could not be more professional, helpful and friendly. The entire day flowed magnificently due to the planning on both parts of the couple being married and the hotel. The food was excellent. All tables served promptly maintaining that everything was hot and fresh. After the wedding the rest of the visit was a pleasure, my past experiences after an event like this haven’t been as welcoming.

Fabulous stay. The room was great with lots of nice touches. The hotel was really interesting and nicely furnished/ decorated. The staff were mostly helpful but it took an age to check in as the person on reception didn't know what they were doing and needed help from someone else. They didn't explain what was happening and kept telling us to go and sit in the bar and wait - probably a training/ experience issue which I am sure will be easily resolved. Breakfast was nice but felt a bit on the expensive side for what we had.

Went for afternoon tea with my mum (and my three-month-old). It's a lovely, relaxed venue, with friendly and accommodating staff. The tea menu is extensive, and the sandwiches and cakes are really tasty as well. They also have halal options, which was great for us. I would definitely recommend it to everyone!

Visiting hotel for a close Friends wedding. The decor was beautiful throughout the venue. From the main bar area to the roof terrace. Food was excellent. The staff were very friendly and despite a large number of people at the wedding the service at the was quick and efficient. Would definitely recommend visiting and hosting an party at the hotel.

Was there as a wedding guest and food was of excellent quality and beautifully presented. Hotel is a little quirky but I liked that. Rooms appear to be all different and our room was great. It had a mezzanine floor with bed on entry level and sofas and TV, shower and loo on mezzanine. Great power shower. We were blessed with the weather and rooftop bar is fantastic with lovely furniture and plenty of atmosphere. The only negative was that there could have been more staff serving at the bar for the evening reception.

Google
I came here for their afternoon tea earlier this year after being recommended by a friend. She was right to recommend them because it was absolute perfection. We ate ours on the mezzanine level, seated in big comfy chairs, and could happily have stayed for the entire day. Beautifully presented afternoon tea, with plenty of sandwiches and cakes, the fluffiest scones and tea on tap. Staff are attentive without being intrusive. This would be the ideal place to take your mum for a special treat.

Attending a wedding and stayed overnight and found it to be fantastic service all round. Staff couldn't have helped more. Bar on the top provided great views across West Manchester from the terrace while the bottom floor bar was a delight with a separate sitting area. Rooms were amazing and usually split across 2 floors with a mezzanine. Comfortable beds and superb bathrooms providing free standing bath and walk in shower. Fantastic hotel, well worth the stay.

Yelp
Couldnt have asked for anything better. I made a reservation a few weeks ago for a group of nine for afternoon tea. They said we could have our own room which i thought was great. Its an old school so we was in the girls class room. We had a choice of ladies or gentlemans afternoon tea. Which I instantly thought was so different. I ordered the gentlemans to try something different. And different it was. We got a mini burger, fish & chips, king prawn, chicken and leek pie, chips and a scotch egg then the afters was cheese, crackers, chutney, chocolate brownie, ice cream. Served with a jack daniels cocktail or a glass of bubbly. The staff were very tentative and friendly. Always checking we were ok and asking if we wanted more of anything. Cannot wait to return

Yelp
What a great place the building is just beautiful and the decor is amazing. There was 9 of us for afternoon tea for my hen doo so we got given a private room. The staff were so attentive and helpfull they couldn't do enough for you. I had the ladies afternoon tea and it was really nice yiu got a selection of sandwichs, scones and cakes. They had a good selection of teas the afternoon tea was served with a glass of champagne everything was really well served. Part of the group had the gentlemans afternoon tea and that looked amazing I was a little jealous wish I ordered that highly reccomend. I will definitely be returning for the gentlemans afternoon tea. They do vegetarian afternoon tea and afternoon tea for people with dietary requirements something for everyone.

Yelp
The Great John Street is one of the best hotels I've slept in. It ranks right up there with some of my other favourite hotels in the world: The Ace, New York The Drake, Toronto The Hoxton, London The Soho House, Berlin The Louis, Munich Situated in an old school house, the restoration of the hotel is terrific. And not only is there a huge soaking tub up on the roof, there's also a hammock! And what says "instant holiday" than a five minute lay about in a hammock? The staff are seriously sweet - showing you around, pointing out the various amenities, helping work out random inquiries (should you have any.) The only disappointing bits about my stay at Great John Street were the annoying, paid wifi and not being able to find time to soak in the generously sized two person tub in my room (I do hope to one day get the chance to rectify that...) If you love quirky, modern, design-forward hotels that lack pretension but have plenty of character, you can't do better than this in Manchester!

Oonagh C.

Yelp
I came on a beautifully sunny day specifically for the roof terrace and it was great. The roof terrace is really stylish with a modern fountain on one of the walls, beach huts and lots of curvy wicker chairs and glass tables. Also a hot tub for the guests! The view is great. It looks over the old Coronation street where they do tours and we could just about see the corner shop. To the left theres a pretty little city Park that was in full blown springtime bloom. The fountain covers the noises of the city below so it really feels like a little haven. We got the lift up to the 3rd floor as they'd sensibly opened up the roof terrace bar for the sunseekers. We had to move a table and chairs into the sunlight with the assistance of the waiters but after that it was great. We both ordered a Pimms and lemonade as it just had to be done. These were chock-full of fruit and cucumber as they should be. Before our drinks arrived though we were given four complementary smoked salmon canapés which were yummy. It did raise the question of why it's always the rich that get freebies? The only downside was the price, an eye-watering £9.90 with the table service charge. It was fun seeing how the other half live though. The rest of the top floor inside look very nicely decked out, and the bar downstairs looked like it would have been perfect if it hadn't been so sunny. On the way down we took the stairs and weren't sure where the ground floor was as it wasn't signposted. We ended up exiting the building via the back exit with the bins. So back down to earth with a bump.

Yelp
This is without a doubt, the best designed and most romantic boutique hotel in central Manchester. At least that's my opinion. The decor is somewhere between French country, modern Victorian and boudoir chic, if that's possible to imagine. It's worth a visit just to hang out in the Oyster bar, the most intimate and romantic setting for a few drinks: crushed velvet sofas, candles and over sized Baroque mirrors. However, when I came here it was for a function in the rooftop lounge, an equally sumptuous space with an adjoining terrace 'playground' replete with hammocks and outdoor sofas that has some stunning views over Manchester. The rooms I'm told are just as thoughtfully finished with mezzanine bathrooms and roll-top baths. According to my friends, you can book on line for as little as £100 if you're lucky.

Emily B.

Yelp
Oh, I'm going to have to start earning more money, so that I can spend all the summer on the roof terrace here drinking glasses of Pimms that cost £9 (!) each. Though that did include some utterly delicious canapés so maybe it was value for money. Meeting up with Oonagh C before a Yelp event she pitched two options to me: 1) getting a can of coke from sainsburys and sitting outside, or 2) having a cocktail on a roof terrace. It was a tricky decision obviously. I started looking at the cocktail menu and then Oonagh mentioned Pimms, which had me convinced straight away. They were full of fruit and absolutely delicious. Roof terrace + Pimms = summery happiness. The canapés were some form of salmon pate or something along those lines. Really tasty anyway. I would definitely return for a drink on the terrace on another sunny day, and I would also look into their afternoon tea if I wanted to treat someone.

Yelp
I am STILL dreaming about this hotel. It is at the top of my list for class and comfort. My first night here I actually stayed up relaxing, and reading on the couch downstairs whilst enjoying some tunes on the radio (there I go with BBC4 again). Sure, it may have been the jet lag, but I was grateful for the opportunity for as many awake-hours as I could muster in this glorious room. As Miriam W. notes, the staff are sweet and accommodating, and the hotel bar and restaurant make it difficult to find reasons to leave. I had one of the best English breakfasts I've ever eaten the morning of my departure from gjs, and the restaurant gets bonus points for having vegetarian beans and sausage. On a final note, the architecture is truly something to marvel at. And as an educator, I appreciated the renovated school house energy. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Lovely place for a glass of champagne or a cocktail - not stayed here but really like the beautiful bar area. Really well made cocktials at £7.50. They do afternoon tea here too. There is awlays tasteful chilled music coming out from really good quality speakers and the staff are very friendly. Took a mate here for a birthday cocktail and he loved it. The rooms look beautiful and they were doing a Sunday night with breakfast at a bargain £90. Nice to stay here with the wife for intimate night to celebrate Battle Of Agincourt or reenact The Peterloo Massacre on the roof terrace etc (with real horses). If you like proper Boutique hotels this is perfect. Makes Malmaison look like a Travelodge! GO!

Yelp
I've been to GJS before for afternoon tea and a drinks networking do on the roof terrace. Had a great time at both but this review is based on my last visit. I was going to a 40th and was in the Oyster Bar which is downstairs and straight ahead as you go in the front door. The welcome was good. The bar area is large and has a lounge area just to the right which has comfy chairs. The Buffett was nice - I had some prawns and some chicken. Considering I had my tea before going out, this was very greedy but was tasty so no regrets! The reason I've not marked this as a 5 star is because the wine was so expensive. It is £9 for a glass. It was very nice Malbec and the service at the bar was good but that is a lot, even considering it is a hotel bar. Not a place to go when you want to get drunk. I would really like an excuse to stay here over night and check out the bedrooms but as I live in the city, I'd need a really good reason! I have heard they are really good rooms with very comfy beds!

Naomi H.

Yelp
If you want luxury and city centre location then this is the hotel for you. My partner & I stayed at GJS a few nights ago & it was the most relaxing city break experience I've ever had. The staff are friendly and the boutique style rooms are stunning. We also had a gluttony package with fresh rose petals on the bed, temple spa pamper package, champagne & rocky road & strawberries. I didn't want to leave. Breakfast is made to order or a continental buffet is also available. Take me back.... Please!!

Hayley G.

Yelp
If you're looking for a boutique hotel where from the moment you walk through the door you feel that there really is no expense spared... Visit Great John Street! It's expensive yes. But it's amazing. It's certainly the type of place you would book for that special occasion to REALLY show that special someone how much you love them!! The gluttony package is well worth the extra money too, a pamper package, champagne, home baked goodies and rose petals add the finishing touches to an already awe inspiring hotel room... Which has a mezzanine bathroom might I add! Breakfast was great, I had Eggs Benedict which was perfectly cooked, and the service was great. Afternoon tea here is also well worth the money... Don't eat before you come though - there is so much to choose from! I want to go back NOW!! Check out more reviews on www.getoutandseestuff.com

Yelp
GJS is a boutique hotel that is just so unique. Hotels should have this sense of escapism, regardless of whether you are visiting Manchester or are here for a night out over stay. In fact I would recommend all three Eclectic hotels in Manchester. GJS, Didsbury House and Eleven Didsbury Park. If you want a change from the standardized formalities of a bigger chain hotel, then these boutique townhouse hotels add a touch of class to Manchester's hotel collection. The great thing about GJS is that it is the type of boutique hotel you might find in the surrounding countryside, yet here it sits in the heart of Manchester. Have a snoop on the terrace roof garden, sit in the hot tub and enjoy the fantastic city views, but you'd be lucky to find it unoccupied. also be careful if you decide to go at a later hour to the hot tub it may be engaged and you might see more than you bargained for ;D The private dining area in the roof top lounge is perfect for hosting a nice party. It was rather cosy when we were there although that particular night is a bit hazy. The thing is once you have been to one boutique hotel you have kinda been to them all, with minor differences. If you like GJS you should try out Escape B&B. GJS is satisfaction personified, you will not be disappointed I wasn't who knows you might spot a celebrity or two hiding in the jacuzzi upstairs.

Yelp
What can I say?! This is 100% the best hotel in Manchester. I still cant get over how right the owner's got this hotel...I could not have dreamt up a hotel as good as this one. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you have a anniversary or birthday coming up. The hotel will do special packages to mark the occasion with champagne, truffles and rose petals. The decor is fantastic and the beds make you feel like your floating. The only downside to this hotel I that if you are wanting to see Manchester as soon as you see your room you wont want to leave. Ill be going back here as soon as I have an excuse to celebrate anything again!

Neil M.

Yelp
Great John Street hotel is amazing. I first came here for a private party and the sexy tiered bar with dark velvets, mesh drapes and huge faux Rococo mirrors was very impressive. It's smallness and vintage feel adds to the 'boutique' label it prides itself on, yet it's a tightly run ship here and the staff really do everything they can to ensure you have a great night with no snootiness. After enquiring how much the rooms are at the party I nearly had a heart attack, which I tried to pass off as a peanut gone down the wrong way, but I've since found that if you book a late room you can sometimes find them much cheaper. I last got a Friday night stay for £106 with breakfast included. The best part was the bathroom on a little mezzanine floor with a free standing bath, so if you've got someone to share it with this alone is deffinately worth £100. We also had a look from the roof garden, which offers lovely views and a hot tub that neither of us dared go in as I'm sure it's only reserved for the beautiful people, nod, nod, wink, wink. Great John Street kicks the ass of any other hotel in Manchester and give me any excuse and I'll be back.

Emma Louise M.

Yelp
I was lucky enough to pop into Great John Street recently to meet a dear new friend, and my goodness, was it a treat. I got a little guided tour which I thoroughly enjoyed, and was pretty much blown away when we ascended to the roof terrace and spotted a beautiful hot tub, a ton of outdoor sofas and a HAMMOCK! Sorry, let me shout that again, HAMMOCK! The view from the top of that place is just all kinds of incredible, and as soon as you walk in you're attended to warmly. I only waited for my companion a short while but in that time I was invited into the cosiest, comfiest and plushest lounge I'd ever experienced, offered several drinks and asked if I was okay. I could have stayed in that lounge forever. What's amazing about this hotel is that it's a converted schoolhouse, but they haven't taken away from that fact in the decor, as doubtful an idea as that seems. Nope, they make reverent references to its previous form by labelling the staircases and keeping original names of the building such as 'boys' and 'girls' segments. The mezzanines that are incorporated into the design are utilised to the full and it's an impressive place to hold any kind of function. Although I've not stayed there, my friend has and she assured me it was total luxury. Plus she was told she could use the hot tub at absolutely any time. Heck, I know I only live round the corner, but sign me up!

Yelp
One of my favourite hotels. This place is pure luxury. The bed's are large and so comfortable you won't want to leave. The decor's tasteful and modern/romantic. The staff are welcoming but everything was so perfect I didn't have to ask for anything. Each room has excellent facilities and its own charm and finishing touches. The mezzanine rooms are particularly nice as well as those with twin free standing baths - worth paying the extra for. Well located but you won't want to leave your room so order in. Sadly didn't get to use the hot tub on my stay but gives a good reason to go back! They have two sister hotels in Didsbury of equally high standard.

Yelp
Beautiful, just beautiful. Every inch of this hotel is styled to perfection without feeling too stiff and scary. Staff are kind, helpful and attentive. The bar is a great place to spend some time. The sofas are deep and comfy, you'll be held captive in them for hours. This place oozes charm.

Yelp
I'm really going to have to disagree with the other reviews about the Great John Street Hotel on here. Don't get me wrong I have been a couple of times before and had an excellent experience but this was far from the case on my most recent visit. I went with a large party from work and we had booked the roof terrace and were promised exclusive use of it and BBQ. However when we arrived all excited as it was a scorching day and just perfect for spending the afternoon on the roof terrace we were told that it wasn't available and we had to eat our food in one of the inside rooms downstairs. To say we were disappointed was an understatement. No apology was offered and we were told that this is what we had booked when it very clearly wasn't. To add insult to injury there wasn't enough room, for our group to sit down together in the room we were offered so some of us had to squeeze in and eat off our knees. There was no BBQ like we had been promised but instead pre cooked burgers and kebabs served buffet style with salad. The food was disappointing and hardly worth the £30 per head we had paid for it. The service was surly. Eventually after about 3 hours of sitting squashed and boiling inside we were allowed on the roof terrace, just as another group of rich looking city types vacated it. No need to guess why we had to wait to go up there and our booking was changed. The icing on the cake was having a glass of wine spilt all over me by a waiter who couldn't serve 2 drinks on a tray without disaster. I was offered a quick apology and when I complained was offered a free drink but was told it could only be a soft one. You have gone right down in my estimation Great John Street and that large group of around 15 I was going to bring for afternoon tea at Christmas won't be appearing. We'll be going to the Lowry Hotel where they value people's custom.

Yelp
This Hotel is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful in Manchester, I have not stayed here (in my dreams) but have visited the bar with friends... so have at least picked up on the extremely chilled ambiance of the Hotel. The building is an old Victorian school house, and much of the interior has the original brick work exposed. The interior design is for me its crowning glory, every corner is perfectly married with a beautiful statement piece of furniture. The Oyster bar where I went for a drink is also stunning, and is open to non guests.... there are few bars in Manchester where you can relax with a well made cocktail in such beautifully designed surrounds. Cocktails are around the £6 mark! Cheap considering you are not in a sticky floored, mass marketed chain bar!

Qype User (jowadd…)

Yelp
This is a lovely hotel. The rooms are gorgeous and luxurios. Not as mainstream as other hotels. Right in the city centre too so near all the sights, shops and bars. The restaurant food is lovely too.

Qype User (CatBo…)

Yelp
A beautiful boutique hotel converted from an old school house. Even the basic rooms are stunning, sometime split-level, with four poster beds, roll top baths in the room, dvd players etc. The hotel bar is beautiful, small but with a very cool gallery area. However prices are extortionate so watch out. The jewel in the crown of this hotel is the roof top bar with hot-tub - ask the staff nicely and they'll make sure its free for you!

Qype User (donnap…)

Yelp
My favourite hotel in Manchester. The rooms are stunning, the food is excellent are the staff are so helpful and friendly. The roof terrace is fab, it has a hot tub, you can also see onto Coronation Street (just)! Has an independent charm about it that the bigger chain hotels don't. One of the things I love is that you can ring reception and they will bring you a load of DVDs to choose from. Perfect!

Qype User (beeble…)

Yelp
Fantastic hotel. Stayed here over a weekend away in Manchester and had a blast. The roftop bar is a nice addition as well.

Yelp
The hotel is really nice. We had our company partners staying there. They were happy and that is why we are happy, too.

Yelp
Great hotel in Manchester beautiful bar with suburb customer service !! The ambiance at this hotel is amazing :);)

Yelp
Loved it, nice hotel. One of the best, if not best, hotel stays I've ever had. Marginally dearer than my average price for a hotel.
