My husband and I came here on vacation for his birthday. We had the most amazing trip with lots of history and very beautiful scenes. Our car attendant, Bill, made this trip all the more enjoyable. Definitely will be back for the Polar express tour

Google
The Great Smoky Mountains Railroad was such a lovely and relaxing experience! The scenery throughout the ride was absolutely beautiful—rolling hills, rivers, and trees as far as the eye could see. It felt like stepping into a postcard. We picked up some cute souvenirs at the gift shop and got our photo taken before boarding, which made for a fun keepsake. Onboard, they offered both sweetened and unsweetened iced tea (which I appreciated!), along with chips and snacks that kept us going during the ride. Everything was comfortable and well-organized. A perfect mix of nature, nostalgia, and a little bit of adventure. Highly recommend if you're in the area and want to slow down and take in the views!

Google
Beautiful scenic ride. Relaxing and lovely! The photographer was fun and the Tour guide was informative, funny, well spoken and very attentive to the riders. Highly recommend for a day trip, something different to do or a special occasion. We rode the Royal Palm and it was very comfortable seating. Reclining chairs, restrooms, a car for drinks and snacks and the unlimited soda, tea and water with a souvenir cup was great. If you're thinking about it do it! You won't regret it 😊

Google
Our first time on this 4-5 hour trip. The service, food, drinks, keepsakes for the first class car were all very good. Jacob, our boarding attendent/tour guide/bartender/server was outstanding. His service was excellent, he was informative and funny. He made it a great experience. The scenery was nice, but about half of the time all you saw was trees or the side of a mountain. We were treated excellent from start to finish. Well worth the trip and cost

Google
Wonderful experience. We took one of the 1st class cars with adult beverages and a meal, every thing was great. There was a guitar player named Tommy that came around and he was fantastic. Met some great people and had a blast

Melinda Adams

Google
Absolutely enjoyed this. Jacob was our waiter/host. He was great, very friendly and outgoing. My husband and I really enjoyed the trip. There was a layover on the way back of an hour. Was able to tour the other cars or walk around and check out the scenery. I felt most of the scenery/points of interest was on the left side of the train and better photo opportunities.

Google
Beautiful scenery, but overall disappointing experience 🚂 I really wanted to love the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, but unfortunately it didn’t live up to my expectations. The train moves very slowly and makes a long stop in what feels like the middle of nowhere — there’s not much to see or do except order food at one of a few nearby restaurants. It honestly felt like a bit of a waste of time. The ride itself wasn’t very comfortable either. The train shook and swayed so much that I ended up with a headache by the end of the trip. I expected a scenic and relaxing experience, but it just didn’t feel worth the time or money. The area is beautiful, and the concept has potential, but the experience itself left a lot to be desired. Hopefully they can improve the pacing and destination options in the future.

Google
A very scenic and comfortable ride! All the staff were helpful and welcoming. We got the lunch to go along with our ride (sandwiches, chips, and a cookie). The ride was about 4 hours total. Would definitely do again.

Yelp
JD and I had planned a third weekend of the year at the casino in Cherokee which lead us to booking seats on the train. Diane had never been on a train, so she was as super excited and joined us. When booking our tickets you cannot tell which side of the train is "better". We needed at least a four top and booked a table in the Harper car. When we got on the train the Harper car only had two person tables on one side and four person tables on the other. We definitely were on the less scenic side. We departed at exactly 10:30AM, stopped for exactly an hour in Nantahala and left at 2:20 and got back to the train depot in Bryson City at 3:45. So the 10:30-4 description is very accurate. Please note if you think this train is taking you high up into the smoky mountains, it does not. It starts at Bryson city, 1700 ft and the highest elevation I saw during the train ride was 1950. You order your lunch while booking. We all got the salad with grilled chicken. It was good. On the way back down they brought out dessert. Brownie, apple turnover, and a slice of cheesecake. The apple turnover was the best. We ordered a bottle of champagne and had no trouble finishing that while riding!!! Nancy was in charge of our car and was super friendly and knowledgeable about what we were seeing and passing by. Be sure to bring cash so that you can tip your server.

Yelp
II would like to express that this experience exceeded my expectations significantly. My wife, being the meticulous planner, chose an exceptional option for us. The views we encountered were truly spectacular, and the historical insights provided by our tour guide, Chris, were remarkable. He transformed this tour into an event I wished would never conclude. The quality of service, attention to detail, and the food offered were impeccable. I wholeheartedly recommend participating in this tour, and I suggest purchasing the first-class tickets to fully enjoy all the premier offerings available. Thank you, Chris, for an outstanding experience.

Yelp
What an awesome experience on Oct 8th. While Hurricane Helene had impacted travel for many, we could travel unimpeded from metro Atlanta. Everyone at GSMR was so welcoming and appreciative of everyone who was onboard this beautiful fall day. We chose the premium open-air car, and boy, ole boy, was it worth the few extra dollars. The comfy seats, the drink tumblers, and the BBQ meal came along with amazing views. Do yourself a favor and get to Bryson City and enjoy this wonderful experience while helping the local economy.

Yelp
Pleasant day hike and there was a breeze. Parking was $5 and ample spaces. Lots of folks were tubing down the river and you can also rent them. Hike was relatively easy and enjoyable. Saw a few waterfalls along the way. Not too many people and it was nice to immerse in the woods by ourselves. Saw many butterflies and dragonflies. The bonus was no mosquitoes!

Yelp
This was a really great experience. We took the first class Nantahala Gorge trip. They food was quite excellent. I really would have thought that the meal would have been spartan and not very good. But these folks really provided first class fare. The staff did a phenomenal job of service and making the trip fun and special. I would highly recommend this for a great time in the mountains.

Yelp
We had a great time on this trip. We took the steam train to Nantahala's Gorge it was a very nice ride. We chose the MacNeil car and sat in seats 40 and 39 at a 4 person table in first class. Honestly the seats on either side are scenic the 2 person tables got best views of lake but we got great pics of the river. We also had some wonderful conversations with people around us! When you purchase tickets you have to choose your meals.. we had chicken and it was pretty good. It came over mashed potatoes and green beans with a roll. Your purchase comes with a nice tumbler you keep filled with ice water to start but you can change it up to variety of non alcoholic beverages. You may also have an alcohol beverage of beer, wine, or cocktail for extra purchase.. they bill you for those at end of ride before getting off train. It was a nice stop at gorge where they had a nice restaurant and general store you could grab stuff from. I think our stop was an hour round about and you could watch people take on rapids in their canoes and kayaks.. you could even put feet in water which is a balmy 52 degrees year round lol.. on trip back we were treated to seasonal pumpkin cheesecake it was delish!! Also on way back to Bryson city on ride we got a gentleman named Chris who played guitar and he sang Country Roads as we all sung along with him.. great trip I highly recommend! I would be remiss if I failed to give huge shout out to our server and wonderful host Steven! He was happy and friendly and helpful.. I think he spoke to everyone in the car at one point just a great all around guy with 8 yrs of experience.. lots of jokes, stories and laughs were had! As I stated I highly recommend taking a ride.. they have lots of things to offer so go check them out!

Yelp
I was unsure of what to expect to be honest, but this was really fun! It was cool to see all the sights, and our train car attendant Bill was a hoot! He had great knowledge of the area, and was very funny, and he was fantastic with kids! They serve alcohol on the train which was fun! My mom and I had mimosas. We stopped at a little town named Dillsboro, which had some cute shops and restaurants, but since our entire train line was there, everywhere was a wait, so we ended up eating on the train when we got back on. They serve hotdogs, nachos, pulled pork sandwiches, chips and snacks, sodas, beer and other alcohol. We enjoyed it, and during the summer you can go white water rafting, zip lining, kayaking etc. This is really something cool to do to get out of the cabin when it's cold if you're there in vacation.

Yelp
My reservation was unexpectedly canceled via voicemail just three days before my trip. I immediately attempted to contact the manager I 2 voicemail, didnt hear Anything back. I finally got them on the phone, I reached a manager named "Allison" on October 25th 2024. Unfortunately, she was extremely unprofessional, raising her voice and responding with a hostile attitude, lacking both professionalism and empathy. She made no effort to understand my frustration or the situation I was in--how I had lost a day of work and forfeited money from my Airbnb due to the last-minute cancellation. On top of this, I was not informed that my selected seats were no longer available. When I asked to confirm our seating arrangement, I was told an "upgrade" was being offered, which did not suit our needs, Allison didn't even care to ask for my opinion, Throughout the conversation, Allison continually talked over me, ignored my concerns, didn't even apologized nor tried to even tried to fix the situation, and refused to provide a cancellation confirmation number, insisting I already had it with my ticket confirmation. When I requested that she still confirm the number, she declined and abruptly said she would end the call. Is this the level of service I should expect? After waiting years to secure these tickets, I am deeply disappointed to be treated this way. This experience has left me questioning the professionalism and maturity of those handling such important reservations.

Yelp
This adventure came highly recommended by friends and family and turns out, even more friends had taken the train than we knew! First- John loves trains, so this was like Christmas for him! We traveled to Bryson City to hop aboard the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad and went up the tracks to Dillsboro. We went with an open air car, it had bench seats facing out & we had to laugh that the seats John picked put us right in front of a support beam to the roof- no worries, still had great views on either side of it. **Don't buy the boxed lunch- hear me out. You have to pick it up before you board. The water isn't cold, the sandwich is nothing special and I gave away the cookie and chips to the kids sitting next to us. It is far too overpriced for it not being served on board (I've done other train rides that deliver the pre-ordered food to your seat) Now that I got that out of the way- the ride itself takes you along the river, with mountain views, reservation land, local residents and their properties, a couple of bridges and a tunnel. Not all of the scenery is pristine- but enjoy the ride! Once we were in Dillsboro- we hit up the brewery and I went local art hunting! AKA- shopping. I found a gorgeous handmade mug with fabulous glaze and bought a beautiful skirt at one of the shops. We were back on the train in no time for the return trip. Couple of tips- think about weather if you are in an open air car. It was chilly in the morning when we departed, but warmed up after our stop. I loved our guide on in our car.

Yelp
I highly recommend this adventure! The view was incredible and we had an informative guide in our car. If you do this ride in the summer, I highly suggest you pay a few extra $ for an air conditioned car.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our ride on the railway. We had seats in a 1st class car for our 4 hour ride. (2hrs up. 45 mins at the Whitewater center and a hour 15 mins back) We had the 8 am ticket. We boarded as soon as we got parked and we were greeted by our "train hostess" Lisa. She was full of energy and knowledge about the area and we enjoyed her very much. Breakfast was served on our ride. You had a choice of shrimp and grits or breakfast casserole. It was good. (But don't expect fine dining.) It was tasty enough. Our ticket also got us a commemorative tote bag and cup. It was nice to have a table during our ride and closed windows, because it was a very cool morning. Our car was not sold out so we were able to move back and forth to view sights from both sides. I will say the best view is from the seats on the bottom of the seating chart. People complain on here about the kudzu obstructing the view. I disagree. There are many beautiful views and wonderful stories told by the host/hostesses. The stop at the Nantahala Whitewater center wasn't necessary but there's photo ops. (TiP: They try to steer everyone to the bathrooms right by the train stop but there's bathrooms at the bar/restaurant by the bridge so don't stand in line!!) This is a great experience and I'm so glad we did this. We really enjoyed it!!

Yelp
All aboard!!! I surprised my husband with tickets for his birthday, and we had such a fantastic time! A few things: 1) First Class was absolutely 100% worth it. I walked through a few of the other cars, and ours was far and away the most comfortable, with carpets and wood paneling and candles on the table. We were in the Macneill car. I noted that one of the other 1st class cars (Silver-something) was clearly a repurposed Amtrak and not nearly as nice. Get the Macneill. 2) On of the other reivews say that they make you switch sides....ummm, not true, at least not on our ride. The side you sit are assigned is the side you get. We were on the "I" side for Macneill and had the better views. 3) First Class gets a meal, drinks, and a fun surprise- everyone got a mimosa! I had the hashbrown casserole and it was tasty enough. Not fine dining, but honestly better than I expected. The only negative: We only had about 45 minutes at our layover at the NOC (Nantahala Gorge center) which really wasn't enough time to do much of anything except get some fresh air). 5/5 .....but be choosy with your train car AND side of the car, if you can!

Yelp
This journey through the Natahala Gorge was really beautiful. We sat on the left side and had great views. Our car was the Blue Ridge one and it was beautifully restored. They have food on the train you can buy or bring your own. The staff were very kind and I really enjoyed our story teller who was very informed about the area. I would mention if you have kids the cheaper train choices are good, if you want a quieter ride choose and outdoor car or a more expensive seat as noise levels with music and the clanking of the rails can get up there. Also, the train museum that is included in the price of the ticket was beautifully done.

Yelp
What a classic experience for couples and families! Make sure to plan months in advance if you plan to take a train ride around the holidays. They book up early and for good reason. The railroad adds a true small mountain town feel to the heart of Bryson City.
google avatar

Yelp
Great family day out. We brought our own snacks but there was food and drinks available in the concession car while the train was moving. Loved the on board entertainment and the Cherokee coach class was perfect for our family. Comfy seat with tables to set our snacks and drinks.

Yelp
I loved my trip on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad, the people across from us hated it. Also, while looking at reviews on here everyone gave it either a 1 or 5. It was a 5 for us My wife got me this for my 31st birthday. We were in the first class car called Harper. The high was 74 on a Saturday in August which is unreal. Anyway, we were seated on the "M" table. We saw everything. All the views...the lake, steam show, locomotive, river, etc. The young couple across from us couldn't see anything. I thought the train loops around so people on the other side get a good view. Nope. The train goes backwards after you reach your destination. I won't talk about food. I don't really think anyone does this for the food experience. The food was acceptable, but I probably would have skipped it if it was an option. Dessert was also offered which was a nice surprise. Also, we got a bottle of wine our hostess saved from the "Uncorked trip" which was phenomenal with commemorative wine glasses. This was honestly one of the more unique and fun things my wife and I have ever done. We travel at least once a month so that does mean something. I would just be very careful buying your ticket. Our side had a phenomenal time with views and the other side missed out on everything. I wouldn't have been happy if I sat on side across from us.

Yelp
This was our second time on the Polar Express train ride. Both very different experiences. My only negative this time around was the interaction between the staff in the car. They tried to have some banter and it was more confusing than adding to the experience. Then there was some character that came in and was supposed to be grumpy. We had no idea what he was saying or the point of his character. He actually scared my four year old daughter a little bit. My daughter loved the magic of it all and ate up every little bit. Santa was amazing! He truly played the part well. The sound effects through the PA system were great and the North Pole Village at the end of the line was perfect!!

Yelp
Simply a great rail excursion. Did the steam powered trip to Nantahala Gorge. Trip lasted 5 hours with a one hour stop over. Others will review the trip. This is what I learned: The train was sold out the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. I booked the day before and there were three seats left in one car. That was it. Book early! The Bryson City car is open seating. Board early! Most seat configurations are two forward and two reverse so that groups of four sit together. If you want a window then book a higher, assigned seating ticket or board early. Everything opens at 9 for the 10:30 departure. Plan to be there at 9. The website tries to sell you a sandwich lunch for $13. The sandwich is ok and you get a bag of chips, package of Grandma's Cookies and a Luke warm bottle of water. Options are you can bring your own food with you or there is a snack car on the train. Also there is food available at the stop over. The website wants you to pay to park ahead of time. I did it, arrived early and the attendant never checked my name on the list. Not sure that always happens, just saying. The train is long! The higher the class, the less you walk. It stretches nearly two blocks so if you buy the cheap seats like I did then plan to hike both at the depot and the stop over. Finally, there is a stop so passengers can do the trip one way the raft in the afternoon. Once you've gone one way you've seen it all. Possibly explore option. Other than that it is probably one of the better excursions out there. Give it a ride.

Yelp
Now who wouldn't love to step back in time, and ride a diesel or steam train.Good old fashioned fun! Enjoy the sights and sounds of the Great Smoky Mountains while traveling along the Tennessee and Nantahala (nan-tuh-HAY-luh) River. Lush green vegetation, and what a beautiful ride. We went first class and had a roast beef meal. It was good. They offer box lunches. And I was impressed by all the options. We will go again they have a polar express, moonshine ride,etc...
google avatar

Yelp
Heather was our host and she was the best. We also had Chris to play his guitar for us. Little disappointed on the leg room. We were almost knee to knee with strangers.
google avatar

Yelp
What a fabulous trip. Our host in our train car was Chris. He was so enthusiastic and very friendly. We couldn't have asked for a better host. The food was very good. We would highly recommend riding on The Great Smokey Mountain Railroad!!!

Yelp
I booked the steam engine train to the Nantahala Gorge in the open car, and I am so happy I did this! Alicia was our host, and she was absolutely fantastic, energetic and kind! This excursion on the steam engine train was the absolute highlight of my week staying in the area! I plan on returning to the area and will definitely book this again, but to visit Dillsboro, instead. The train goes one direction via steam engine. Then, it goes back where we came from, but with the help of the diesel engine. There is also a layover stop for about an hour, allowing you to get up and around and enjoy the river.
google avatar

Gail C.

Yelp
I can't say too much different than others, but I can reinforce some important suggestions. 1. Book early and go for a table. It gives you more room. If you don't, you may find yourself knee to knee facing strangers and playing footsie. 2. Don't buy the lunch, wait until you stop. Get lunch there. 3. Our paid parking was never checked. I could have saved 10.00. 4. It's a do it once and never do it again.
google avatar

Debbie M.

Yelp
This was fun but too long. We took the Nantahala Gorge tour and we were in the premium open air gondola which I would recommend highly, but sight was limited. They need to clear the kudzu as it covers everything along the route. In this car you get lunch and that was a pulled pork sandwich with baked beans and cole slaw. There isn't much to do at the layover, maybe get a cocktail. Admission includes train museum but by the time the train gets back the museum is not open much longer. We just dropped our bag off and some stuff we bought and walked back to museum and it was closed. Much like the rest of the town.

Yelp
When my mom, husband and I were deciding what activities to do in and near the Smokey Mountains, my mom suggested The Great Smokey Mountains Railroad. Now while it was an overall great experience, there were a couple of things that I think they could improve upon. First of all, we requested that our window be cleaned as it was very dirty. I mean, the main point of the train ride is to look at the beautiful scenery. We were informed that they would be unable to do so (and seeing as how we opted for the most expensive ticket package at $99 per person, we were not happy). Also, the stop that was made at the halfway point was at the Nanthala Outdoor Center (the other layover trip was unavailable since they were servicing that train). Now, Nanthala Outdoor Center looks fun...if you're there for more than hour. We took a quick peak at the river and the two stores but there was no time for much else. However, there was plenty to like about this excursion - more than the aforementioned annoyances! The first class car was clean with comfortable seating and air conditioning. Our attendant (I'm super bad at names) was friendly and attentive (in first class, you have unlimited refills on non-alcoholic beverages). Also, the food was better than expected and even included a dessert when we concluded our layover. There's also a snack car that does serve alcohol and an array of food items. The scenery was beautiful and the conductor narrated and provided us with interesting facts as we passed certain areas. After we returned to the train depot, we were able to admit into the Smokey Mountains Train Museum free of charge with our train ticket. So, overall a great experience and I would definitely return and try one of their other excursions.

Yelp
My Husband and I came here today and we chose the first class seats ! Yes they were pricey but 100% worth it ! We both received a nice hot lunch which was delicious , delicious dessert , endless supply of soft drinks and coffee , a complimentary smokey mountain bag , complimentary cold brew holders and we both also received a cold drink tumbler ! The train ride took approximately 5 hours up and back but was so scenic and our Waiter was very informative sharing history and fun facts all through out our time with him ! I highly recommend this amazing train ride

Yelp
We really enjoyed our recent ride on the Great Smoky mountains Railroad and will be back again for sure! They offer several options for seating and food, which fits with many different budgets. We went with a first class option this time in the Carolina Shine rail car and had a blast. The staff was knowledgeable about the history of the area, kept our beverages full, delivered the awesome food and kept us laughing, all while we gazed at the beautiful scenery. Also want to shout out to Steve and Zach, who were our hosts in the rail car; you guys rocked! And Tommy, keep those country hits coming!

Yelp
The GSMR was fun but also kind of a one and done for me. The experience itself was cool but I don't think it is something you would want to do over and over. The parking area is super easy to find and then it is just a short walk over to where the train boards. The train was really cool inside and surprisingly comfortable. I absolutely loved our car host, he was smart, informative, and funny. The food was meh but the moonshine was fun and made the food not as bad as it was. I liked the trip but felt that it wasn't varied enough and since you went out and back the same way we didnt get to even really see the views from the other side. We mostly just got to see a wall of green as we went by.

Yelp
My friend and I did the Tuckasegee Train today. It was a good experience. The only thing I would say is that you really need a longer layover in Dillsboro since most of the time is spent waiting for food. There was no time to shop, which is bad for the locals in that town because they look forward to us stopping by and purchasing a thing or two. A 3-hour layover would be awesome. Now, I suppose you could do an all day trip that started early in the morning and that would prolly work well. We enjoyed our trip. I made us new friends. They're from Pittsburgh, but live in South Carolina now. We enjoyed the foliage and it was interesting to us that people really don't care about their land. They just let it go by the way side. We chose the crown class seats in the Royal Palm box car. Good thing to. It rained out entire trip. We brought ponchos so we were covered, but really disappointed there wasn't any coffee or hot tea and we were supposed to have unlimited refills. They also take your picture and for $35 you can get the pictures printed with the GSMR logo imprinted on it. It was a really great picture of me and my friend, but we chose to wait for the digital version online instead. We ate at Forager's Canteen. The service was good but our server Megan got a little clever with upselling. I pointed to the Crispy Brussel Sprouts in to right corner and she asked if I wanted them as an appetizer, I said yes. Apparently, there's an appetizer portion and now my bill jumped up double. If you're going to get clever, at least inform the person who obviously has never been there, tips about the menu and what price increase to expect as well. The bacon was supposed to be 86'd off the Crispy Brussel Sprouts, except they were not. Also, the CBS were not crispy, they were mush from the maple syrup they were doused in. my friend's tacos we're excellent and so we're the salty sweet potato tots. The gift shop is open when you get back and you need to hurry up through the toy trains area. That shop closes at 430p. Not to much time after you get off the train, they close up. It seems like they rush you a little bit too much. Even the downtown area closes at 5pm. The last train wants to walk around but nope, that town clears out quick. Tip: Go early before you train. Have breakfast and walk around.

Richard L.

Yelp
OK. So this is a difficult review to write as it very much depends on which side of the train you sit on. My wife and I purchased first class with the meal and thought it would be great. Heading out, we were rider "right side" and heading back we are riders "left side". By no fault of anyone, we saw nothing but green vines for 95% of the trip. It became annoying to even look out of the window as it makes you dizzy. The other side of the cart where 4 people sit had a great view the entire time. Our guide, Jacob did awesome! He was very knowledgeable in the history and route for the entire 4-5 hours. As much as I wanted to enjoy it, I was absolutely ready to get off of the train after the first 1.5 hours. Unfortunately, I would prob never go on this again but if I did, I would ride the open cart as you can look all around you.

Yelp
We traveled July 16 2024. We booked first class on the Catmonth. Chris was are guide and it was his second day on the job he was amazing , funny and did a wonderful job. I am on a walker and the boarding gentleman was helpful getting me on, storing my walker when it was time to get off Chris and the same gentleman made sure I had my walker and helped me down. They also called a golf cart to take me to the car. This went above and beyond what I expected but I am so grateful for all the help as well as a wonderful train adventure

Yelp
We had a wonderful time on our train ride! Bill was excellent in telling us about the history and entertaining us. We were on the crown class car and there was no leg room for 4 adults, we would have chosen a different car if we would have known that. Also, bring cash for tips. They all work really hard and appreciate the tips.

Yelp
We booked what was represented as a table for two facing forward. We ended up in a "bench" seat for 4 with another couple riding sideways. Getting in and out of the seat was an adventure to say the least! The excursion was the "Wine" something or other. Started with a cheese board and some sort of sparkling wine. The cheese board was shared with the two complete strangers in our bench.. An instant turnoff. The ride was nice and well narrated. Dillsboro was what was expected.... A town with gift shops and tourist eateries that appear to survive by the train. All in all, the "First Class"!coach was cramped. The food was sketchy, the wine pairings were so-so. The touristy photo shots were a bit much but he crew was extremely hardworking, pleasant and humorous. If you plan to be in the area enjoy with the ride understanding that this ain't the "Orient Express ". The railroad museum in Bryson City is worth a bit of your time if your into train nostalgia.

Yelp
They have different events year round. My mom and I went on the Polar express train ride. It was cute. They encourage you to wear pajamas. They tell the polar express story and hand out hot cocoa. Adorable!

Yelp
We were absolutely blown away with how amazing the polar express Christmas ride was! We did the "first class" polar express ride and it exceed all our expectations. We will definitely be doing it again next year. Everything was organized, professional and clean. Staff was well trained, all passengers under the age of 3 had to wear a mask. Santa was perfect! If you need some Christmas magic! I say all aboard this train!

Yelp
The main attraction of Bryson City seems to be this train which they've nicknamed "The Polar Express". I'm not sure if it runs year round or if it is just a Christmas time type deal. Nonetheless, the family and I decided to try it out as we hit a lull on the festive activities. First off, upon arrival to Bryson City downtown I was pleased with how old-fashioned yet organized and homey the city felt. We ordered our tickets online (which I highly recommend doing) so we had plenty of time to check out the attractions nearby. There was a huge gift shop connected to a model train museum which helped prime us up for the train. The train arrived right on time so we were ready to board and get some good seats ( arriving earlier helps to guarantee this). The conductor and "train butlers" (excuse my lack of a better word) got really into the act and put on a decent show. I was in the Bryson City car and one guy working it must have done theatre or something of the sort as he was brilliant with the show. The train then traveled at a pretty average speed to the North Pole. One thing I will say is to do the trip before nightfall as you could probably see a lot more of the scenic views. The setup they had at the North Pole was pretty cool and the guides presented them in a funny way. All in all, I'm glad I rode the train as the family seemed to really enjoy themselves. The trip is definitely worth it if you have some younger kids but the facilities could be updated a little. The cars didn't have any ventilation so it got a bit musty in there especially towards the end. The acting could have also been a little better but we went towards the end so maybe they were burnt out. Nonetheless, if you're nearby and it's Christmas time then definitely check out the train.

Yelp
It was just ok. I'd never feel the need to do it again or recommend it to anyone. Aside from the cloudy windows that made it difficult to see and hurt your eyes after a while, the train itself was nice but the trail you follow is rather unpleasant to look at. We did the Tuckasegee River Excursion and it was a mess. Mind you, it's still winter so everything is dead a bare looking. Maybe in the summer all the trash is hidden by the foliage? Even then, the view is mostly trailer parks and old rundown homes being occupied by hoarders. Not at all what I was expecting. The stopover in Dillsboro was fun but I agree with others, it should be longer. All-in-all, I'd recommend you just save your money and drive to Dillsboro if you'd like to see it.

Yelp
Hubby purchased three tickets for our road trip to Bryson, NC online about 2 months prior. It was very easy to do this since it showed maps and diagrams of the train cars. Upon arrival, we picked up our tickets and also received our vouchers for our boxed lunches we purchased. We also received complimentary traveling mugs so we could get unending refills during the trip. Abby our train host was wonderful! She was very knowledgeable of the area and history of Bryson. It was about a 2 hr ride to the end, we turned around, had a 1hr layover at the NOC and we were able to shop around a bit before we headed back on the train for the second part of the trip. We had such a wonderful time. Everyone was so nice and customer service was top notch. We even scored a picture with conductor John! I definitely recommend bringing the family here!

Yelp
Wonderful excursion option for groups! We took the Tuskegee River Tour 1hr and 20 min ride to Dillsboro, NC, About an hr layover, 1 hr and 20 mins back! Lunch was good! Highly recommend buying, gives more time to shop during layover! Instructions were easy to follow and employees did well with customer service. Fun activity for a day trip or weekend in town (& loved the boutique shop named Madison on Main)! Wonderful experience!

Yelp
My wife got us 1st Class tickets for the Tuckasegee River Excursion for my birthday. We were staying in Pigeon Forge and made the drive for the train ride. If you don't want kids to be around, pick 1st Class as it's 21+. If you're there as a couple I definitely recommend the extra cost plus you get a meal and dessert. The food was decent, in between okay and good overall. I got a pulled pork sandwich and my wife got the pot roast. The pot roast was good but a small portion. With the tumbler they give you you get free non-alcoholic drinks. My wife and I got mixed drinks and they were pretty good. Pricey (over $10), but can't complain since it's a tourist attraction. Most of the people our car seemed older, like 50+ (no offense saying older lol) which was great. I think my wife was the youngest in her late 20's and myself 2nd in my early 30's. The atmosphere was great and everyone conversing with everyone. Laughing and carrying on. The server/bartender Emily was fantastic! Very tentative and funny as heck. The 1 hour layover in Dillsboro was nice. Walked the town. We didn't need to grab anything to eat since we ate on the train, so we got to walk around more. I recommend stopping at the Innovation Station for a beer. Great people and drinks! On the way back we had more drinks and had still had a great time. Once back to Bryson City you can visit the model train museum for free with your train tickets. Overall I'm extremely happy! We'll be back for sure!

Yelp
Jacob and Shea on the Carolina Shine were the absolute best hosts. Great experience riding through the beautiful mountains.

Yelp
Tourist Trap! Save your money and your time and just take a drive through the mountains. The scenery is not good. There really isn't anything to see. we were VERY disappointed.

Yelp
We had a good time on the train ride. The train goes up and back the same way. We sat in the first class open air car and what was nice is that on the way back down they had everyone switch sides. That way you got to see the views from both sides . They served lunch and unlimited soda, water, ice tea in a souvenir cup Our guide Jacob was excellent, he had a lot of local knowledge and made the trip fun! I would suggest doing the train ride if your looking for something to do while in Bryson City. I gave 4 stars because I do think it was a little pricey for what you got.

Yelp
What an amazing trip! My hubby and I got 1st class tickets for the Tuckasegee River excursion. It was beautiful! The meal and dessert were very yummy - small portions which is good for the layover in Dillsboro (the Chocolate factory is a must!). The windows were a bit foggy depending on where you sit, but the staff said it was because the company they use for power washing the train went out of business or something of the sort. The view was still great! Mountains, rivers, and woods - so if you don't like those views then don't bother buying tickets. The staff were so friendly, and even let my husband and a few others go out of the train car to the sides to see a better view! I am 1000% coming back in the fall for an even prettier view!

Yelp
It was a nice day and I enjoyed half the trip, which is why I didn't give it a five. Unfortunately nature controls much of the reason why half the trip is boring, between being squeezed between mountain walls and kudzu vines hiding scenery you don't see as many views as you'd like. But the second half of the trips is very nice following the lake and stopping at a picnic area for a break on the side of the river was very nice. Staff and train cars were nice. I'd recommend this ride for sure.
