Why Cruise Lines Are Putting So Much Money Into Private Islands

"Norwegian’s private island, Great Stirrup Cay, was initially bought in the 1970s and has been developed over the years to include various amenities, making it a favorite among guests."

Beautiful island! The lagoon was so nice, and the beach was so pretty! Overall, we enjoyed our time here a lot. They have some food options (burger, hotdog, tacos), and luckily the drinks were still included in our drink package. The only downside, we were in Norwegian Jewel. Somehow, the ship always got deprioritized. We did tender couple of times, including here.

There is a ship dock and pool with a swim up bar and so much more. There is a train/ golf cart with multiple cabooses attached, to take you around the island. They are still doing construction on a water park and other thinks. Loved it!

Great Stirrup Cay is a beautiful island with crystal-clear water and clean white sand. The staff were friendly and the activities were well organized. It’s a very relaxing place to spend the day perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and just enjoying the beach. The only downside is that there’s no port, so the ship can’t dock directly. You need to transfer to a tender boat, which takes extra time. But overall, the experience was still worth it.

It was the first Norwegian ship to dock. The place is similar to other cruise lines private island. Beautiful beaches, turquoise waters, music and party. The pool is spectacular. The place is under construction so, it will be even more amazing

Google tourist trap, and this might pop up! Soon they’re making it so your drink packages will not be available on THEIR island. The only food options we had were cold tacos, hot dogs, hamburgers, cold jerked chicken and pizza. Everything lacked flavor. The island looked like it was a landfill I get the construction but it just looked really 3rd world to me. Don’t get me started on the pier! 🤣🤪

Our experience on NCL’s private island in Dec 2025, was fantastic. Despite the construction of the new pier you didn’t really hear or notice it. The new pool was open and amazing. We were group 2 on the tender boats and highly recommend getting off the ship early and exploring the island before everyone else. We were one of the first people in water and the fish were amazing snorkeling right from the shore. Hopefully the new water park and development doesn’t take away from this islands charm be right now it is amazing. Highly recommend a visit here if it is on your itinerary.

This private island is amazing. Well kept, clean, and easy to navigate. The beaches are safe and clean. Lifeguards are everywhere. There are water-sport rentals available, mini golf, and zip-line. The food is decent and it’s everywhere. Good bars with music. Food trucks with different kinds of food. Lots of seating and shaded areas. There are cabanas for rent at a price, and plenty of beach lounge chairs. There is also a lighthouse that stands out with a beautiful mural. It is paradise for sure.
