There are two former prisons here from the reign of white terror which ended in the 1980s. It was fascinating to learn about this period of history of which I know very little. A time when people were imprisoned or killed just for their beliefs including many innocent. You can walk through most of the buildings including the solitary confinement areas, auditorium, recreation yard, infirmary, and portions of the admin wing.
This prison was a result of the White Terror period One of the slogans during the period was "It is better to capture one hundred innocent people than to let one guilty person go free." This principle, along with a healthy incentive system in which imprisonment entitled the arresting officer to a significant portion of the prisoner's personal fortune and sometimes access to the prisoner's wife, led to more than a hundred thousand incarcerations and several thousand executions during the White Terror, which lasted from 1949-1987.
Most of the signs are in Chinese only but some of the outside panels have English. There is an English brochure so pick that up right at the entrance. Definitely worth a stop to see what happened during the longest period of martial law in the world at that the time. Martial law in Syria ultimately lasted longer but is now lifted.
