The Most Wondrous State Parks to Visit During the Government Shutdown

"Green Lakes State Park, hidden in the upstate New York town of Fayetteville, boasts a pair of rare lakes with surprisingly tropical blue waters and a remarkable geologic makeup — but that’s not all there is to this wooded parkland.  The lakes that give this park its name are of a rare breed: Green Lake and Round Lake are both meromictic lakes, of which there are only about a dozen in the U.S. and just over 50 in the entire world. Meromictic lakes don’t see any of the normal seasonal mixing between water layers that lakes typically see, so their warmer surface waters stay eternally separate from the cold, mineral-saturated waters below. As such, anything that sinks to the the depths of these lakes stays there in a state of near-suspended animation, protected from the tick of time by the frigid, densely briny environment. Meromictic lakes are a sort of portal to the past, providing valuable glimpses of ancient plant and animal life. The unique blue-green color of Green Lake and Round Lake comes from a combination of factors: the lakes’ considerable depths (180 feet for Round Lake, 195 feet for Green Lake) plus the lack of turbulence allows sunlight to penetrate much deeper than is normal for most lakes. Added to this are high concentrations of calcium, magnesium, and sulfur from dissolving limestone, as well as rare species of aquatic algae and bacteria that thrive here, all of which contribute to producing a Caribbean aquamarine.  Green Lake is one of the most thoroughly-studied meromictic lakes in the world, but that doesn’t mean it’s lacking in the spooky legends department. Deadman’s Point, a natural reef created by the aforementioned bacteria that precipitate calcium from the water, is so named because of rumors of a strong current that flows beneath it; swim down below the point, local legend says, and you’ll never surface again. (It should be noted that swimmers diving below Deadman’s Point in search of their doom will be disappointed to find, instead, only extremely rare aquatic mosses and sponges.) Green Lake’s north shore features a swimming beach where you can splash safely in these ancient waters or rent boats to paddle around the lake’s glassy surface. Or simply stroll on the path that rings the lake for stunning views of the trees reflected in the still blue, as the surrounding wilderness is one of the largest old-growth forests in the northeastern United States, perfect for trail running, hiking, and biking.  The park itself also has its own fascinating history. It was created during the Great Depression as part of the New Deal, its sandy beach and park buildings built by the hands of veterans of the Spanish-American war. The construction camps were reopened in 1944 to host migrant workers from Newfoundland during World War II. In 1945, Green Lakes was transformed into a P.O.W. camp for German captives — all of whom were repatriated when the camp closed in 1946 and the park turned over to the public’s enjoyment once more." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
Great place for everyone to enjoy the lake water and trails. They have Disc golf areas dedicated and it's worth for a day trip.. Beach is the best. Food and beverages are available in the store within the park. Restrooms are neatly maintained.

Bryanna

Google
Fantastic views!!! we didn’t use the beach but we walked by it and it honestly looked like the nicest beach i’ve seen, very up kept, clean, and lots of amenities. The trail around the lake is so easy to stroll down and you get great views of the lake with the stunning green water!

Ed Agnello

Google
Beautiful state park! The water is just amazing! The color of the water is magical. Everything was very well maintained. Beautiful trails. We had an amazing time renting a row boat.

Jon B

Google
We went for the day to go to the beach. The water was absolutely beautiful. The park is clean and well kept. We’ve experienced a lot of state parks in NY and there is more care with this park. Definitely worth experiencing the unique lake.

Brandon Hayes

Google
The park was beautiful, and very well maintained! The trails were very well kept and accessible, and the sites were nicely spaced and private. We will definitely be returning here for another camping trip in the future! This time I’ll remember to bring my golf clubs, the 18 hole course looked awesome as well!

Andrew Watson

Google
I bicycled in and the primitive campground is about a mile straight up hill from the office. Expect to walk up if you aren't driving. There was no hot water in the bathroom and nobody answered the phone after 4pm, so I had to wait for the seasonal kids to come through on their golf cart and tell them. A couple hours later it was fixed. The lake is gorgeous. The campground is mostly quiet. If I lived in Syracuse I would be here every weekend.

Google
Lovely and amazing ... Let's keep it that way! Fantastic and easy walk around Green Lake. Incredible color and the freshwater reefs were something to behold. The only issue? People who don't respect the clear signs to stay off the reef!! It's a delicate ecosystem, and it's rare. Let's keep it intact for the future of NY and its people.

Jennifer Heffron

Google
Green lakes has always been a well maintained park. The beach is nice, but walking the lakes is absolutely beautiful. My kids love to walk the lake, when they were younger they also loved the park area . Renting a see-through kayak is a must!
google avatar

Amy K.

Yelp
Beautiful Lake in central NY! Take the trip, it's worth it. Kayaking is worth the $20 to see the beautiful clear water and pristine blue waters. Can't believe this place is in NY
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
Great park affording beautiful views of rare meromictic lakes. Lots of things to do at this park such as kayaking, swimming, hiking, picnicing, and nature programs. The trails are relatively level with very few inclines.
google avatar

Tara G.

Yelp
What beauty...from the hiking trails to the lakes and campground this place is breathtaking. I would highly recommend coming for a day or a week, if you can.

Yelp
You'll be in awe when you arrive at the teal blue geological wonder of Green Lakes State Park. There are high levels of calcium carbonate (calcium carbonate reflects the green wavelength) in the water, which gives it the gorgeous green hue. There is a large beach with swimming. It is very family friendly. There is a playground, picnic areas with grills, camping, kayak rentals, bathrooms, food for purchase, a party room and of course a trail around the lake for hiking. The park fee is currently $10 as of this review in 2023. Green Lakes is my go-to trail in the summer.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is such a nice park! If your looking for a hidden gem worth spending a day at this is it! I was truly impressed with just how much there is to do here, from just the basic hike around the lakes, to a guarded beach to swim, camping and even disk golf corse. Not to mention the concession stand with a variety of treats to top off your day here. I can't recommend this park enough, the campground was spacious with a verity of sites available for the big RV's to the modest tent camper there was something for everyone. You have to see it to believe, the photos just don't do it justice.
google avatar

Cain L.

Yelp
Infrastructure is well-maintained, and pathways are clearly marked in the entire park. Also has a good-sized playground near the beach with little kids and older kids sections separated.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been going here since I was a little kid. Used to swin in Green Lake for summer camp. As a teenager, I would walk the trails around Green Lake and Round Lake. As a young adult, I would take a a raft and paddle around. Then married, we would join friends who were camping. This summer we decided to camp in the new cabin area. We were more than pleased with the cabin and spent a lot of our time around the fire pit behind it. We also grabbed lunch at Yards Grille. Excellent. Really, a stellar campground in pristine condition.
google avatar

Yelp
Took my dog Xena for a walk on the paths. I don't go to beaches or lakes often but i was in the area & just needed a place to walk a bit with my dog from a car trip. Easy access on & off the highway, $10 in the park, easy parking, simple walking paths that meander, some nice wood views, easy access restrooms, plenty port-o-potties, buy an ice cream or drink, take in the view, lay a blanket or find a picnic table (at 6pm plenty), can hear some music boxes, chilled a bit with my dog at the lake.
google avatar

Kimberly D.

Yelp
One of the coolest places ever!! The water is SO blue it's amazing. I'm in awe of the color every time I go. There is also so much to do here. They have trails where you can walk or go for a run. They have clear kayaks to rent so you can look below and enjoy the crystal blue water. There is also a small beach area where you can lounge or go for a swim with lifeguards. There is a food shack and there are bathrooms as well. It's both pet and family friendly. There are playgrounds and BBQs all over. The only downside is that the beach area can get crowded on warm, sunny days... but I've always been able to find places to lay out! Truly an Upstate NY gem!

Iesa H.

Yelp
The place is truly beautiful! The water in spots is the color of the Caribbean ocean! The paths for walking are clear and allow a nice atmosphere to get exercise!

Yelp
Beautiful NY State Park with incredibly clear lakes. We came specifically to kayak and had a really nice time. The prices for rentals were reasonable - we paid $10 an hour for single person kayaks and paddled around the whole lake. You are not allowed to bring in your own kayaks; to keep lake from any outside contaminants that might come in on personal watercraft. We had been to Green Lakes before to hike but really enjoyed our time on the water. It was very relaxing and the water is amazingly clear. Highly recommend as a place to visit and if the weather cooperates - try kayaking!
google avatar

Gordon V.

Yelp
Absolutely beautiful lake. Designated swimming area and you are not allowed to bring goggles or masks. You also cannot bring in your own kayaks or paddle boards, but you can rent them there. Was a bit disappointed with the service we got renting the kayak. The strap on the kayak seat was broken so if did not support the back. When we mentioned it the employee didn't say a word he just stared. We my husband said he has a bad back and asked if we could get a different kayak. No reply. We went out with the broken strap, but it would of been much more comfortable if a paddle with a different kayak. The clear kayaks are more expensive and no you cannot see through the bottom. There is no value in these except it's cool because it's clear. The best service was in the learning center! Wow! The employee was extremely knowledgeable about the water, the animals, marine life, eco system, and more. Very very impressed! He also gave us some kid bags with goodies to help promote kids to water safely. Great job!!!! There is a fee to get into the park. Bathrooms are clean especially liked the one in the learning center. They have food and drinks. No alcohol. No dogs on the beach. And there is a ropes off swimming section. There are many trails to walk around green lake and the area and round lake which is more remote and preserved. There is also camping and disc golf. Just a wonderful lake to experience. After check out the golf course for A bite to eat. Review coming.

Yelp
Beautiful park. Very well maintained. In particular, I found the trails are better marked than nearly any park I've been to. The water is so beautiful that photos don't do it justice. I should also note the workers at the park were extremely helping us pick a trail. Well done all.

Yelp
Well, I know it's a day late and a dollar short for Earth Day, but I visited this beautiful park today... it's early spring here, not much foliage. But it's a gorgeous day and the lakes are clean clear and beautiful. We enjoyed walking around both Green Lake and Shadow Lake. There were many people walking, running and enjoying the trails. Most dogs were in leash and the people were very respectful when we passed by. Every season here is beautiful and offers nature's delights! Birds singing, ducks swimming, squirrels, chipmunks, all the little creatures... flowers, trees and of course the gorgeous lakes... there are ample picnic areas, camping and golfing here as well, although it's not officially open for those activities yet...

Yelp
Beautiful State Park Easy access $10/ car Over 62 free, like all SP's Large beach area, very clean w/lifeguards. Trails were well groomed, flat and mostly trip-hazard free. Lots of free parking and plenty places to set up campsites or just for a lunch. The water is....Pristine. Clear green/blue-ish tin, hence the name. Kayak rentals. Very family (and controlled dogs) friendly. Great place to visit for the day.

Holly G.

Yelp
Beautiful location to hike, swim or take dogs for a walk. Best not to go on a very hot day as it will super packed w people
google avatar

Erica R.

Yelp
Stunning scenery, nicely kept trails, and plenty of parking. I made a point to time my most recent visit for a Friday afternoon, since I figured the park wouldn't be as crowded. My puppy came for the walk with me and had a fantastic time checking out the water, meeting new people and dogs, and walking the trail all the way around Green Lake itself (though there are plenty of trails to choose from, including to/around Round Lake, etc). I have an Empire Pass, which always makes getting into NYS parks a breeze (I highly recommend them)... but the cost per car is $8. There's a sandy area for those looking to relax on a more beach-like location, and kayak and boat rentals are also available from about mid-June through Labor Day (swimming season). Camping and cabins are usually open through Columbus Day (*cough* Indigenous Peoples' Day *cough*). Because of COVID-19, definitely check out the website for the park - https://parks.ny.gov/parks/greenlakes/details.aspx - for the most up to date information about operations.

Yelp
This park is such a fantastic place, especially being so close to Syracuse! Its an urban oasis! Its so pretty and peaceful. We came in early Sept on a very warm week day. There was no fee to enter, I believe because the Governor had temporarily waived them due to Covid. We proceeded to the main beach/lake lot which had ample parking. We brought both of my dogs and took them on the loop around the main lake. It is a very dog friendly place! The trail was well maintained and more than wide enough to be able to social distance safely. It is the perfect distance for a nice but efficient hike. If you wish to make it longer you can veer off towards the second lake. There are lovely views all around, and at some places there are nice benches. Plenty of trash cans and dog pickup bag stations are scattered through out. The water is such a lovely color, and there are all kinds of educational stops to learn why this lake is so unique! The beach area is a little bit nutty, even on a weekday. No life guards were on duty since it was late in the season, weekends only. People were ignoring the signs about no swimming and doing it anyways, ugh. In this area there is a large bathhouse, water fountains for both humans and dogs, and a lodge that can be rented. There was also a small playground and picnic tables. It looked like maybe there was a store and or snack stand that would be open in the main part of the summer. During peak season they even offer kayak rentals. They do not allow you to bring your own due to the fragile ecosystem. This park also has a campground, a golf course, and a restaurant overlooking it all! We were not able to take advantage of any of those amenities on this day. If I lived close by I would make this a daily walk with the dogs for sure!

Yelp
How did I grow up in Rochester and not learn of this park until this year?!?! Amazing!! Great beach area and trail around the larger lake - stroller or wheelchair accessible. Pack a picnic and spend the day!!
google avatar

Wendy C.

Yelp
This is one of the most beautiful state parks in NY. The trails are well-groomed and well-marked. The beach is filled with a sand that's got a lot of dirt in it, not like an ocean beach. But the area is wide and gorgeous. The water is refreshing and is an amazing shade of green that you don't see anywhere else. It's not like the Caribbean -- it's unique to this kind of special lake. More green than blue, but mystical. There are a zillion places to picnic. You can bring your dog and explore for hours. It is best to go during the week, as the weekends can be really crowded and loud. Especially in the summer. As much as I love swimming, it just gets to be a bit much when you are shoulder-to-shoulder with others. It has become really popular -- and that's part of sharing the space with all. The bathrooms are spacious and clean, and there are refreshment stands in the summer months. Lots of educational opportunities as you walk around both Green and Round lakes and into the boathouse. My favorite time of year is fall here -- and GL in fall is a treat for all the senses. It smells like fall, and the leaves are all shades of the rainbow. You'll definitely hear (and if you are lucky, you will see) pileated woodpeckers and lots of fun creatures, including a few garden snakes sunning themselves now and then. Every once in a while I've seen owls!
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
Excellent food and atmosphere. Small menu which is refreshing and quick service considering the number of customers dining.
google avatar

Ruth C.

Yelp
What a fantastic Park and campground! We've been trying to camp here all summer and got lucky with last minute weekend opening. We stayed in a new area where there were full hookups: water, sewer and 50amp Service! All for the low price of $35 per night :) Green Lake and Round Lake are the most amazing lakes I've seen around here. Clear, clean and just beautiful. You can hike all round the lakes and the views are amazing. There's a beach area, but this late in the year it was too cold and no swimming allowed. There are signs that you need to be sure to keep beach blankets 10 feet apart. Very clean park. We've already booked our stay for next June!
google avatar

Emerson B.

Yelp
BEAUTIFUL AMBIANCE This is the only water that comes close to floridas rainbow river. It will leave your hair and skin soft. It's super cold, and full of microorganisms It's my third time going, and I really wish I lived closer
google avatar

Harley M.

Yelp
Green Lakes is a beautiful state part with camping, swimming, trails, and tons of picnic tables. It's called Green Lakes because believe it or not, the lakes are pretty green! This place gets super busy in the summer with tons of families. I was there last weekend (Dec 2021) and did the 2-3 mile trail that loops around the lake - the trail itself is pretty flat, snow free, and very peaceful. Parking is free in the winters as well.

Teresa L.

Yelp
Gorgeous! Hidden gem in Ny, turquoise crystal clear water. The hiking trail was so serene and calming
google avatar

Jeff P.

Yelp
Great gem of a park in CNY that can cater to any interests be it camping fishing hiking and more. Can be very busy but a beautiful park
google avatar

Shelby P.

Yelp
Green lakes is a wonderful spot for a random day hike or for a special occasion. There are so many trails, parks, bike spots and so much more that it has to offer. I myself have been here atleast four times in the last few months for a day hike, a birthday party, and a few barbecues. Not to mention the golf course and the playground for the kiddos. The park rangers and staff are helpful and informative, it can be hard to know you're way around at first, but they will answer any and every question you have while you're there. There are also multiple entrances and beach spots so that you're guaranteed plenty of space and parking, so traveling and unloading with kids and stuff in your arms has minimal walking.

Crystal B.

Yelp
My two daughters and I went for the very first time we had a nice walk and saw the nice bluish green lake. We went swimming which it's very very cold. I suggest wearing a whole pants suit even when it was 80°. It was really cold water we went kayaking, which is very nice. There was great service and great people. I felt like there was great prices as well for the drinks 2.50 minute Maid lemonade.

Yelp
Wednesday Aug,3rd 2022, We went to Green Lakes State Park today. Two gorgeous lakes in Fayetteville NY . They have a beach for swimming , a nice beach house with restroom, concession stand, numerous picnic tables sun and shade. Play area for kids Kayak, canoe, rowboat rentals for $20.00 an hour. We had a beautiful day in a Crystal Clear Kayak/boat on the lake. The hiking trail around Both Green Lake and Round lake is a nice leisurely walk or jog with plenty of shady areas to sit, and a nice outhouse at the end of the big lake. We stopped at the Restaurant on the golf course next to the lake for lunch And ate on the Patio. Great Family place and for romantic walks. If renting a boat check the website first. They start at 11:00 am It gets busy on weekends. Always lovely there.

Yelp
Great place to hang out during the summer. I was here in mid-October. After the summer season, it's free to enter. Plenty of parking. The water was too cold to go swimming during fall season (obviously). The disappointing part was that the water was not the turquoise green I thought it would be. It was green but not bright like other pictures show. However the Fall foliage made up for it. Here's a video of my experience: https://youtu.be/Zi2bmXYyvMI

Natalie F.

Yelp
Rolling Hills campground is really nice with a combo of tent and electric sites. The bathroom is nice as is the playground. The camp store isn't as well stocked as some other state parks and I didn't see a laundromat anywhere. The beach is pristine and huge so there's plenty of room for everyone with a brand new playground that will open soon. Our camping experience was very pleasant and we hope to come back next year!
google avatar

Haze L.

Yelp
Beautiful, manicured park with lots of walking trails and pretty sites. I ended up spending a couple hours enjoying the nice day and scenery. It's a really well kept area for a day trip or just a quick stroll.

Tanya L.

Yelp
The best New York State park! Swimming camping hiking. Picnic areas. Yard grill is amazing on the golf course
google avatar

Marley S.

Yelp
Best RV park we have been too except not much shade. Wonder facility. Great bathrooms ! Nice signs & roadways. Nice grass & greenery. Great trails also.
google avatar

Colette H.

Yelp
This was such an awful experience. Do not come here during Covid. No one had a mask on here including the employees. There were at least 300 people here at the beach and another 50+ people on the trails and no one was social distancing or had a mask on. Do not come here if you don't want to get sick. I won't go back because they aren't following any state mandates here.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
We love camping there. We especially enjoy the trails around the lakes. It is nice to have such a great park close to home.
google avatar

Marc G.

Yelp
Always a great place to go to on a beautiful day. A little something for everyone. Kayaks, trails, and swimming for most of the year. Inexpensive campground as well. Perfect for the whole family.
google avatar

Tina W.

Yelp
Hmmmmm so-so few people smoking weed, Some dancing nasty so yea not my cup of tea Butt the trail was good the food was decent
google avatar

Lindsay S.

Yelp
I've come here both in the on and off season and have had amazing experiences. The park is kept extremely clean and is well maintained with a nice 2 mile trail around the lake that people can walk/run on. There is a campground site and beach where during the summer, you can swim in the designated part of the lake. The staff is extremely helpful and Green Lakes is the perfect getaway for a scenic picnic, walk, or day.
google avatar

Steve L.

Yelp
This most beautiful of parks is a 30 minute drive. It's a good place to be alone, walk the Spaniel and gather one's thoughts. Once again today, whilst walking around the emerald green coloured lake, I had to make some decisions but the peace and tranquility allows one to see the true perspective of things. There is a small charge to enter and a small beach for swimmers. The lake is one of only a few naturally green lakes in the world. Well worth a visit, even if you don't have problems!
google avatar

Morgan M.

Yelp
I will start as I always do. I don't give out five stars unless I am blown away. We camp a few times every year and have been to dozens of camp grounds over the years. This one was one of the best state park campgrounds I have been to. They were well maintained with clean wash rooms and things were newly renovated. They have wonderful hiking trails around the two beautiful green lakes. The beach is really nice with picnic areas all around it. I will definitely come and camp here again.
google avatar

Taylor O.

Yelp
This has to be the most beautiful camping experience, walking-wise. The lakes have a unique ecosystem so the lakes are green-blue and beautiful. The pictures you can take here are breath-taking. There are several himing trails you can take but Green Lakes shows off the water. It also takes you to the swimming area. You are allowed to canoe in the lake! You can even fish but you cannot take what you catch; you have to return it because they don't want ecosystem compromised. The camping area is secluded and quiet. It is great for a young couple with no kids because you can relax quietly without major foot traffic. This will be an annual campsite for us.
google avatar

Fox E.

Yelp
It's beautiful but it cost a whopping $8. That's actually what someone said about my junk last night. Lakes are supposed to be blue, and honestly the water at the bottom of this spectacular Forest Area Canyon is indeed shimmering turquoise blue, and it looks like something sent down from heaven. Or like, neon blue fishnet stockings, but a lake, rather than fishnets. It's one of the prettiest things I've ever seen in the region, so I guess on that level it makes sense to charge money to view it. But up here in Central New York I don't really expect things to cost money in terms of rural and natural type areas. I came to visit and was shocked that they wanted to charge me $8 to get in. I could have sworn that last time I visited it was free, but perhaps that was because somebody else was driving and I didn't notice them pay. Technically the charge is for parking. But there ain't no buses that come out this way so go figure it out for yourself.
google avatar

Rich R.

Yelp
Favorite NY State park in Syracuse. Fantastic campground, beach, walking, running and bike trails, golf course and the view and green lake is absolutely beautiful, like nothing you've seen before without being on a tropical island!
google avatar

Eric D.

Yelp
I've longed to come to this incredible place for years having seen pictures on many of the nature groups I follow and it lives up the praise and so much more. Green Lakes park is stunning and the beauty is everywhere to be found. There are loads of trails and the main attraction the green lakes are beautiful and so cool to learn about. There is a lot of parking here and tons of stuff to do and enjoy. Dogs are allowed here and there is swimming available during warmer months but no water craft that isn't from the park to protect this unique place. The trails and paths are great and well marked and kept. There is a lot to see here all over the it should not be missed. This is a super busy place, but the park itself is more than large enough to allow you to have some peace and quiet. I seriously loved this place and it is not to be missed if you're remotely in the area. I can't wait to go back and enjoy it again!
google avatar

Pronto B.

Yelp
If it weren't for the people, I'd be giving five stars. These two stunningly colored lakes are not easy to enjoy while watching so many folks ignore the signs and just doing what they want to, with no regard to others or the future of the area. Perhaps staff walking the trails during busy weekends would help? I would imagine that if we were to return on a fall weekday I would be more likely to give a higher rating.
google avatar

Kyle S.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite nature spots in CNY. It is one of the few "beaches" in the area, though it is not a real beach. It's just a lake front with sand, but it serves its purpose in the summer for swimming and laying out, getting a tan, and playing beach games like paddleball, spikeball, etc. They also have roped off areas of the lake dedicated for lap swimming, diving, similar to a public pool. Kayak and boat rentals here are really cheap as well. The lake is absolutely beautiful and has a unique green color (hence the name). The trail around here is a good hike for beginners, but I would just watch out for ticks during the summer; they are pretty prominent here, and given the humidity of the area, there are also a lot of mosquitos around the trail, so bring bug spray. They do allow for alcohol here, but it must remain away from the sand on the grassy areas of the park. They have their own charcoal bbq grills as well so you can BYOB (barbeque, beer, burgers, etc).
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
I used to camp here every year when I was a kid and I'm continuing the tradition with my kids. The beach has a great play ground, boathouse for renting kayaks and canoes, and environmental education center. The camp grounds themselves have play grounds that are easily seen from most sites to keep an eye on the kids. The whole park is well maintained. The only bad side is that since it is so close to residential areas, it can get quite packed at the beach.

Yelp
Beautiful state park. The green lakes are beautiful to see in person. It gets pretty crowded so I would go a little later if you can. The price for boat rentals was surprisingly low so I was thrilled about that. It's worth renting a kayak or rowboat so you can see it in the middle of the lake.
