Where to Go on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail - AFAR

"Located in Owensboro and the most geographically removed option on many itineraries—so much so that it sits in a different time zone—this distillery offers casual tasting options (around $15) for visitors who make the longer trip." - Kara Newman

We were originally scheduled to visit on a Friday, but were held up in transit due to the weather. I called and the staff made it very easy to reschedule. We arrived for our rescheduled tour on Saturday and were greeted and welcomed immediately. After a short wait, we embarked on an intimate tour of the grounds and operation with a very knowledgeable guide. There’s a ton of history, as this is the 10th oldest distillery in Kentucky. The grounds and facilities were beautiful, and it was great to hear about the campus and how it had evolved over the decades. At the end of the tour, we were treated to a tasting and a few small complimentary souvenirs. We loved it the whole experience, and recommend it hands-down!

Google
We had a fantastic time on this tour. It was first class and our guide/host Josh, was absolutely phenomenal. Very informative, we really enjoyed going into the Rick house and experiencing the spirits right from the barrel. This truly was a memorable experience and we look forward to returning.

Google
The Green River Distillery Tour & Tasting was excellent, one of the best after visiting many over the years (our tour guide Nate was fantastic). I had not sampled any of Green River's products before visiting the distillery, but immediately like their whiskeys (bourbon, wheated bourbon, rye, full proof bourbon). The history was interesting, glad to see this distillery and name resurrected.

Google
We were treated nicely from the time we entered to the moment we left. The Sit and Sip tasting was a nice introduction to the Green River line and Hanna (Sp?) was a great guide. We visited on a busy day. They were setting up for their BBQ and Barrel dinner but attention to us could not have been better. Look forward to returning and even more enjoying their Bourbon.

Google
Very nice place and staff. We stopped in on a Saturday for tasting. Great prices. Very clean and informative. We didn't get to tour but feel like it would be worth it.

Google
Green River is my absolute favorite distillery to visit. The grounds are beautiful and there are so many details that help pay homage to its rich history. Wes is an added bonus and made the expecting top tier! Can’t wait to be back!

Jenni B

Google
Best distillery tour I’ve been on. Very informative. Tasting at the end was excellent as well as the staff. Special shout out to Hannah for her exceptional customer service!

Google
The tour provides a Great history of Green River. They have some great artifacts on display and the behind the scenes tour is interesting and informative. The Bourbon is great too!

Yelp
Great place to visit, I was there with my friends from high school (I graduated 35 years ago) and we had a great time. I loved the history of the place.
google avatar

Jane S.

Yelp
Hannah is a great tour guide. We really enjoyed our visit. The details were thorough but not boring.
google avatar

Beth B.

Yelp
Fun tour, great history of the company and the important rules for making bourbon. Tasting was Fun for my son.

Yelp
Nate was a great tour guide and bartender. Tim was extremely nice and accommodating, answering our questions about the facility. Distillery's history, facility and grounds were impeccable. Not to mention the JUICE was also great. Enjoyed the whole experience and my wife claimed that of the 30+ distilleries we've been to, that Green River is her new favorite. Quite hi-praise... Thank you!!

Yelp
A must stop on the Bourbon Trail. Even though the location is a little out of the way from the majority of the distilleries on the Trail, the history, The amazing site and buildings, the area around Owensboro and especially the Green River Bourbon you can sample is all worth the extra miles! WE visited all three distilleries on the "Stateline Whiskey Tour" and enjoyed all three but this one the most. I suggest you ask for Hannah as your tour guide. She was great sharing the history of the site and families involved over the years and did was very knowledgeable about all the facets of the distilling process... I had been trying to get to Green River for two years because I love their Wheated Bourbon and was not disappointed as the visit was everything and much more that I was expecting!

Yelp
We took the Insiders tour with a cask tasting. I learned so much from our tour guide. Our group was small, limited to eight people, and afterwards we enjoyed sitting at the bar and trying a few different cocktails. None of the buildings are air-conditioned, except for the main area/bar, so be prepared if you go during hot weather because you will sweat. They provided all the bottled water that we could drink. If you want to take the Insiders tour, you definitely want to make reservations before you go .

Yelp
Green River is definitely worth the trip!! Lots of fun bourbon history here! Nate gave an amazing tour!! He is very knowledgeable and entertaining, a wealth of experience and history! Ashley mixes excellent drinks!! Don't miss her Old Fashioned or Cherry Juleps!! Owensboro is a lovely place with a great waterfront, it was definitely worth the visit!! We even enjoyed a free concert by the river. No regrets here!!

Yelp
We stopped this morning to get a distillery stamps and their new full proof. Customer service was very good. The distillery is also very cool looking. Worth a stop.

David R.

Yelp
A large distillery with an interesting history. A fun tour with the guide and good tasting.

Brian S.

Yelp
Great tour and lots of history on Green Rivers. Enjoyed the tasting at the end of the tour.

Yelp
We had such a fun time and the staff were incredible here! Everyone knew us by name and were the most friendly people we've experienced on the Bourbon Trail. The decor inside was beautiful and comforting. We even got a tasty drink before we began our tour! It's 5 o'clock somewhere! We definitely want to come back again for a tour soon.

William C.

Yelp
Great barrel thieving tour with Nate. Nate explained the history of the distillery. Answered all of our questions. Provided a great tasting from sample barrels in the Rick house. Was overall a wonderful day.

Traves L.

Yelp
The people there were very friendly and accommodating. Bert knowledgeable about the bourbon.
google avatar

Yelp
A unplanned visit that I thought would be, pop in, get a bottle and go, turned into at least 2 hours. The staff is so friendly and funny we just hung out. Had a great visit. Next vacation we'll plan better and take the tour.
google avatar

Yelp
Tim the tour guide was fantastic! He made the experience very personal, and was very knowledgeable and informative too. One thing I would recommend is having a breakfast or a meal prior to coming in because otherwise the tastings will go to your stomach. But you know what? To each their own! We had a drink at the bar prior to the tour (the old fashion, the tea, and the gold rush: all fantastic!) Green River has done a fantastic job at keeping to its roots as the 10th distillery in Kentucky in its buildings and its ambiance. River has a wonderful campus and vibe, and I would definitely come back and invite our friends! Let's go!!

Sarah M.

Yelp
Great day trip! Tour was engaging and entertaining! We really appreciate that our underage daughter was welcomed, offered alternatives, and treated with respect.

Yelp
This place was in the middle of a more run down type neighborhood. I was pleasantly surprised we arrived to see a beautiful sprawling distillery. The property was very clean, great landscaping, and all the buildings looked impressive! This is a must stop if you're on the whiskey tour or just passing through the area. The staff was very nice. They have a small bar, with overpriced drinks but you have to try one because you're at the Green River distillery! Tours were $20 per person. I skipped the tour, had a drink took picks and browsed the gift shop. I highly recommend this place!

T. P.

Yelp
We had an amazing time during our tour. Tim the Tour Guide was very witty and fun to be around. The entire staff was pleasant and took the time to answer questions, even though they had their jobs to do. The grounds are beautiful and you can feel the history as you walk around on the tour!!!
google avatar

Gerry A.

Yelp
The thieving tour is fun and informative. Plus you get to sample four different whiskey brands.

Donna H.

Yelp
The facilities are so charming, and Hannah was amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing about the history behind the Green River products. We also appreciated the pricing being so good for such a high quality product. We plan to return to Green River for sure!

Yelp
Y'all... book a tour and go see Caryn (with a C) NOW! My husband and I have been to plenty of distilleries, but this was such a unique tour (barrel thieving tour) and the staff is so welcoming and informative. We had the best time here. This distillery is going to blow up as they are about to launch their flagship bourbon in the next few weeks. We can't wait because everything we tasted was wonderful... I can only imagine what this new bourbon will taste like :) Beautiful grounds, delicious cocktails at the bar, and great bourbon to sip on after your tour. Definitely put this on your list of places to check out on the bourbon trail!!!

Yelp
Interesting tour led by Taylor, who did a wonderful job - really connecting you to the history of this distillery, the 10th one established in Kentucky & brought back to life in recent years. Historic grounds dating to 1885. Highly recommend if in the area.
google avatar

Bobby W.

Yelp
This is Owensboro's hidden gem. Take the tour. Taylor the guide is very knowledgeable, and answers all questions. I lived in Owensboro for yrs and its literally the most interesting thing in town.

John M.

Yelp
You really need to make sure you ask for Tim to do the tour. He is incredible and informative. Your tour will end far too soon and the knowledge base he will leave you with is amazing.

Yelp
We were visiting Evansville and wanted to visit a distillery. I have recently seen Green River on the shelf in St. Louis, but never tasted it. We started off with a drink from the bar, Walnut Old Fashion and Mule were both very good. The tour was very cool, the female tour guide(forgot her name) was very informative and knowledgeable. She took several questions and had all the answers. Tasting was great, two future single barrel sampled were added was a pleasant surprise. Gift shop offered some nice items. Of course we left with both bottles and some merch!

Yelp
This place is pretty cool, and the yelp check in deal is super sweet! Per usual, the staff had no idea what the check in deal was, but they allowed us to use it anyway and get half off tours. We probably would've bought the full price anyway since this was our last stop on the bourbon trail and the only place in Owensboro. The tour was small and intimate, and our tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. One of the better tours we've been on for sure. Seeing the distillery was a unique experience due to their terrapure process, which seems kinda sketchy but whatever. Their main building is cute and they have events in there from time to time that look fun. As far as their bourbon goes, it is a very nice mixing or maybe even sipping whiskey. Not much burn at all-which they say is due to the terrapure thing-but also not a whole lot of flavor. Very unoffensive but pleasant. Their rye tastes like moonshine and i was not a fan, but their super cheap bourbon had me going back for more.

Yelp
Drove over from southern Illinois while on vaca with the family to check out this place. Very impressed overall with the staff and the facility. Taylor L gave an excellent tour and I got to pick up a bottle that is currently not sold in Illinois. If you're in the area and you enjoy bourbon definitely check this place out. You won't be disappointed!

Nathan N.

Yelp
Went to Green river distillery for a barrel thieving tour and cocktail making class. Both were excellent. On the barrel thieving tour we were given a full tour of the distillery and got to sample the bourbon straight from the barrel which was a lot of fun to do. The cocktail class we learned how to make an old fashioned and a bourbon sunrise. Brad gave us the tour and Hannah taught us how to make our cocktails. Was a great afternoon. Would definitely come back.

Alysia P.

Yelp
We bought a couple of pours of their whiskey at the bar. The employee that waited on us was very friendly and told us all about the history of the distillery. It was a very good visit.
google avatar

Eric M.

Yelp
We really enjoyed the tour, our guide Day was very knowledgeable about bourbon, and the bourbon process. And the Green River Bourbon was pretty good too!!!

Rob R.

Yelp
Took a tour tasted, some bourbon, and had a GREAT time!! Ask for tour guide Tim! He really made the tour! Full of info! We'll definitely be back for another round!
google avatar

Nelson F.

Yelp
The tour guide was great and the entire experience was well worth it. I will definitely be back.
google avatar

David L.

Yelp
There is not much traffic at this distillery. My friend and I were the only two. I think this has something to do with the fact it is a 2hr drive from the rest of the Bourbon Trail. They have a very unique way of distilling their liquor.
google avatar

Lou V.

Yelp
Well worth a tour if you are in OWensboro. Really cool to be able to walk the plant and see the WHOLE process and take pictures (Many distillers wont allow this especially the big boys). Saw all the investment that GR has done in past 10 years--they are going big but keeping the quality good. Great to see one of the rick houses and all the barrels Karen gave me private tour and was very knowledgeable. Great pour and didnt just talk about GR product but also explained how to really taste and smell bourbon I will be back for GR bottle ...they are going to tap their own in few months after being barreled for 5 years when they started back up. Must visit!!

Nick G.

Yelp
AMAZING STAFF!!! Super friendly and accommodating! Awkward location to find and awkward parking setup
google avatar

Yelp
Green River distillery company is a must to add to your bourbon tour. The experience was the best of all the tours that I went on. The staff was knowledgeable, professional, and friendly. They were receptive to questions, and were able to explain thoroughly. The history and museum were informative and so interesting. I highly recommend all the tours that they have to offer. I enjoyed it so much, and differently will make a return visit. Told all my friends and family. They also have a nice gift shop, I only hope they add items in the future. Loved my experience, the grounds, buildings, facilities were beautiful, clean, and inviting .

Yelp
Was driving on my way to Louisville and this was "sort of" on the way... When I drove on to the facility the guard at the security shack gave me a bit of a hassle, and also a temporary parking pass. (in the meantime what looked like a homeless person walked on with no issues) Security shack, parking pass... really? Minus one star for this. I have been to about 7 or 8 bourbon distilleries in KY and never experienced anything like this. They were kind of dead the day I was there, a lot of construction going on. The business was recently re-started just a few years ago under new management so when it comes to history, I am not too sure I would agree with some of the other reviews. The process of me getting to do a taster test was kind of off too. First I was greeted by a friendly lady and I explained why I was there, then sent to another staff member to pay, then back to the original woman I spoke with for the pepsi challenge/tasting. Did not seem very efficient. I am finding that all bourbon distilleries in KY have their "claim to fame" on why they are better than others... This one's claim is they use a special chemistry process. I dunno... Guess I just wasn't feeling it. There straight bourbon is good -- thus saving the review from a lower rating.

Yelp
we had a great time and your guide Tim was fantastic!! Would 10/10 recommend this tour

Yelp
Stopped from out of town. Very cute place. Wish we had time to do a tour but could not stay. But stop by the gift shop. The lady working was so friendly and informational. Great tasting honeybee..

Yelp
A great tour and friendly staff, would definitely recommend to someone else and would come back for another visit.

Yelp
When I give a place 3 stars, it usually just means it was good but not outstanding. That's how O.Z. Tyler was. First impressions: it's further outside Owensboro than we though, it's quite a walk from visitor parking to the gift shop/tour starting point, and they don't really do separate tastings without the tour(they can but it didn't seem to be easy for them to do when we were there). Thankfully there was a check-in deal on Yelp that gave us nearly free tours/tastings but I would've been much more likely to pay a smaller fee for just a tasting. Once you've done a few distillery tours, they're mostly the same. This one did have the unique TerrePure system for filtering the liquor, so if you're interested in seeing that method it might be worth it. Unfortunately our tour guide couldn't elaborate on the process (I wanted to know more about the ultrasonic wave purification!! I am a scientist, after all...). It was also odd that we had to walk so far from the car to the gift shop through an active distillery.... lots of big trucks moving about so make sure they see you before walking in front of or behind them. The gift shop was very tiny and I wish they had some of their products from the previous distilling location (like they had a gin and a few others that would've been nice to get). The event space looks like it would be perfect for an office party or wedding reception! And their bathrooms were pretty fancy too. I wish our tour guide could've given us more details about the science behind the filtration process but I guess either they're not allowed to or she just didn't know. I probably won't go back to the distillery but it was a nice one if you're in the area and want some bourbon!! I do love their bourbon... not the rye as much, but the bourbon was perfect for sipping! Very smooth.

Lynch A.

Yelp
Trish and Taylor knowledgeable, personable, and very patient with us as we posted them both questions throughout the tour! One of our party had toured Jack Daniel's tour several days before and noted that the Green River tour "blew them out of the water!" Thank you for a great experience! You do Owensboro proud!

Susan C.

Yelp
great place to learn about bourbon and whiskey. staff was very friendly. tour was great
google avatar

Stacy D.

Yelp
Stopped in along the trail for a tour and tasting. It was about an hour and it was us and one other family on the tour. We had a great experience here. Thanks Caron for the tour, tasting, and for teaching us about bourbon. They do an excellent job with their tour. Be sure to make reservations ahead of time. They take you through the whole process and show you each step of it along the way. Their bourbons we tried were really good! We even bought 5 bottles! They have great prices for the quality bourbon. It is a bit out of the way but I promise you so worth it.

Lisa L.

Yelp
Fun tour with Liz! Detailed with interesting history and great bourbon tasting session at the end.
google avatar

Yelp
Taylor was an incredible guide... She was very knowledgeable and knew what she was doing... She also made it fun it was so pleasant with everyone! Don't let this incredible asset to your team get away... We would come back just because of her... Everyone else at the site was very welcoming as well and the tour was very informative and very interesting... We would definitely return and suggest to anybody that asked

Denise M.

Yelp
The staff is warm and welcoming and extremely knowledgeable. Kids are allowed on the tour and were welcome at the tasting. I would definitely recommend visiting when you are in Owensboro. Green River was the 10th distillery in the state, so lots of history there.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
Took the tour here and Karen was our tour guide. Very interesting learning experience and extremely informative. It is a decent walk from parking lot to where the tour group meets, but they have signage posted. Very pretty indoor waiting areas. Bathroom/ladies' area was beautiful and very clean. They have cocktails for sale while you wait and to take on the tour, but we did not partake. Gift shop is small but adequate and offers bottled water and a few cans of soda. There are different areas you visit on the tour, it can be challenging to hear sometimes and tight quarters with your neighbors in some sections. Karen did a great job representing the company and had a lot of personality and great sense of humor! Only area you cannot take pictures is the last leg of the tour where they have their proprietary equipment and refining/aging process. Tasting was good I guess but I'm not much of a bourbon fan. Overall great way to spend an hour or two and extremely affordable.

Yelp
Bringing bourbon back to Owensboro! High tech way of making bourbon on a property with all the history you'd expect in the distilling business. Cute gift shop, great open space for events, reasonably priced tour. Definitely a new operation, but the tour guide was knowledgeable and the bar was open to take a cocktail on tour with us. Tasting room was tight as our group was large and the tasting was fast, with not a lot of tasting details. Overall great to have some new experiences in Owensboro. After having done most of the bourbon trail it's a great addition with its own quirks to make it worth a trip!
