This was a rustic hotel complex located next to Arenal Waterfall in Fortuna. We stayed there in May 2025 in a spacious, private cabin. Full kitchen, large bath, and a beautiful terrace. (No TV, so bring a laptop -- nice to unplug). Wi-Fi service was excellent. Saw a toucan and wild turkeys, plus frogs chirping all night. We stayed again in October 2025. Appears the owners are making substantial renovations, so it will be interesting to see the "final product". I assume it will be a combo of both private cabins and standard hotel room units. The location is amazing and close to everything. Both times the staff was friendly and helpful. Walking distance to the most popular waterfall. They have 24-hour security, so you can enjoy your privacy.

We stayed in Villa 14, which was tons of space, and private. There are bugs everywhere yes, it's an old building and worn. The location requires a 4x4 car...but otherwise, the staff was friendly, quickly accessible via their WeChat line, and the house itself was 'home'like and we had a wonderful 3 days here. The location is most ideal for visiting the waterfall, but perfectly placed for the hanging bridges and numerous other volcano tours. Also the Gecko restaurant for breakfast is a quick drive down the hill, warm and welcoming. Loved our desayunos typicos while playing with Chicco & co.

The reviews for this place are way too low. I’ll caveat with the fact that we stayed at a cabin on the offseason for only slightly more than one of the hotel rooms - which is a good deal in and of itself. Cabin had tons of space, everything was outfitted well. Working fridge, strong AC, great views. Things are a little dated and dusty, but nothing that scared this white, sheltered traveler. ||Same with the roads up and down to our cabin - if you are coming to Costa Rica, get a car you can trust - period. ||We had no hot water the night of, but lo and behold, if you ask the front desk for service, you get it, and the water was fixed pronto. ||Only negative/positive here is the location. A little out of the way of La Fortuna proper. However, that meant we saw great wildlife (toucans, small mammals, friendly resort dogs) right outside our door, no binoculars needed. Everything felt safe, smooth, and the breakfast was yummy. ||Great value at price - our lodge for 2 could’ve slept 6+. Adding in breakfast + the hike on premises, a great value.

Absolutely gorgeous hotel!||We stayed in Villa 12. I feel like I can confidently say this was the best one! View of the volcano out the back and the entire valley out the front. So much good animal watching and it was the perfect way to feel secluded in the jungle while being only an 8 minute drive to La Fortuna. We had no idea what we were booking, but it was amazing!||At breakfast you get to choose between 3 options, typical Costa Rica breakfast, American breakfast, and pancakes and a parfait. We thought it was plenty of food and good quality, if not your typical American spread. Delicious juices, coffee and tea are also available.||The pool and hot tub have a view of the valley as well.||The hiking trail access included in your stay is a 2ish hour loop through the lush forest and a few fields. As a pretty avid hiker in the WA cascades, I would NOT say this is an easy hike/stroll, but might feel easier if you're used to the heat! I don't recommend going in the rain, the trail seemed like it would get muddy.||We were stunned by what we got for the price, and will be talking about how amazing this was for years!

We stayed two days at the Arenal Waterfall Lodge. The cabin we stayed in was not featured in any of the pictures, but it was fairly nice. There were 3 queen sized beds, a full kitchen, and a nice balcony overlooking the jungle. The cabin was located approximately 1/2 mile down a steep and very rough Rd. It was nicely cleaned when we arrived and welcoming. Our greeting was very nice but limited in detail. The pool appeared clean, but we did not swim in it. The staff were all very polite, well-mannered and friendly. The breakfasts were very good. ||The property appeared aged, but the staff was working diligently at cleaning up the brush and making the large area more beautiful. The lodge was within walking distance of the Arenal waterfall and had many hiking trails to enjoy. ||We typically like rustic places to stay, but the beetles were a little overwhelming. The beetles, which measured approximately 1 to 2cm long and 1 centimeter wide we're harmless but annoying. At night the beetles flew around and ran into the walls and occasionally landed on the bed. During the day the Beetles would crawl on the floor, and we would kill them. At the end of two days there were approximately 20 beetles that we killed by stepping on them. There was no maid service during our stay, and that would not have mattered if it weren’t for a need to sweep up the beetles we stepped on.

The pictures from this hotel must be AT LEAST 20 years old because this is not the hotel you will stay at. Every single “villa” looks old and dilapidated on the outside. The road down to the villas is crumbling. You pass many buildings, gates, decorations that are broken, crumbling, or rusted. I’m sure this place was gorgeous 30 years ago. If you don’t have a car you are out of luck unless you stay at the only villa on the same level as reception. Every other villa is down the steepest, slippery when went, set of sloped walkways. We stayed at probably the farthest down the hill and some inclines were 45°. The receptionist did offer to “get us a ride” to our villa because of our luggage however his “ride” was like 15 min away. We walked all the way with luggage. (In retrospect we left and checked into another hotel- Casa Del Rio, which had golf carts to get us to the rooms… Arenal should take some tips from this place). |Then we go to our room- “villa” 17. Smelled clean. Seemed clean. However everything is so worn. The curtains look like they are from the 70s and never been cleaned. There are rust and mold stains all over the bathroom. The furniture to sit in is outside plastic furniture. There is a loft with a bed that you would make a person you absolutely hate sleep in. Unfinished wood floor and dead bugs. We arrived after a 15 hour travel day and decided it was ok for the night. Then it got dark. And all of a sudden we were being attacked by bugs. Probably drawn to the light. I just have killed 10 bugs before we finally found how they were getting in. The back door wasn’t sealed and neither was the window in the bathroom. We ended up sealing with towels to make it through the night. Left 2 days early and I don’t even care I lost money. Being able to relax in my hotel room is more important. When we got into bed it felt dirty. Like the sheets hadn’t been changed. |Included breakfast was horrible too. Eggs cooked like rubber. You also are given very limited times to eat with no exceptions if you have an early tour. |Lastly, if you don’t have a car you’ll never get a taxi, tour companies don’t like to pick up here, and there’s nothing to eat near by. I knew this part going in so after our 15 hours travel day our private shuttle was kind enough to stop and a store for us to get ramen and yogurt for dinner! Luckily the fridge and microwave worked! |Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.

1. You get what you pay for.|2. Beds are hard. Pillows acceptable.|3. Location is quiet (3:50 am 🐓 😂 not so quiet) and close enough to town for food options.|4. The smell in our room was nauseating at first. Daughter leaving going elsewhere tonight.|5. Breakfast was great. Food options (except bacon) very good. And included.|6. Centipedes by the dozens upon arrival. But, in the jungle so it is what it is.

I didn't realize how far I would be from La Fortuna when I booked this hotel. Nevertheless, there was much to enjoy. First of all I'd like to thank the front desk person Ricardo, who recommended both using Uber, for discounted transportation, and also the Cano Negro boat tour, which was wonderful. It is in a beautiful location within walking distance of the Arenal Waterfalls. The grounds were serene and offered plenty of access to trails. La Fortuna is very pleasant for restaurants and gift shops.
