Cape Town Travel Guide - Vacation & Tourism

"Since 1696 when the cobblestones were laid Greenmarket Square has been a popular meeting space. Today, it's where locals and visitors alike barter with vendors who set up shops—from formal stalls to makeshift tables—filled with home goods and African arts and handicrafts. It's open every day, but the first Thursday of every month during Cape Town's city-wide First Thursdays celebrations is the best time to catch live music and street performances." - Katie Jackson Katie Jackson Katie Jackson is a New York City-based writer who covers travel, food, and more. Located in a very central area along long street, the market is composed of easily around 30 stalls selling magnets, keyrings, traditional African clothes, handcrafts, caps, decorative items and bracelets among others. Large variety of stuffs sold at high prices that you should at least divide by 3 to obtain a fair price. However, sometimes you can get better prices without much bargain in Pan African Market ( a building found 100m away) or cheaper fixed prices in African Curiosity (V&A Waterfront). The market is active as from 9-10am till 5pm everyday, and amazingly as it might seem, they dismantle every stall at the end of the day and mount them again the next day, every single day.

Classic souvenirs are sold here. Prices should be negotiated. There are similar souvenirs sold at different stalls so be a little bit patient and walk through the square before buying at first stall you see.

Great place to spend time buying some real art and craft from South Africa. Buy clothes, native musical instruments, paintings, leather and jewellery. Lots of souvenir and gifting items available here. Make sure you bargain well for the best price.

It's always a bustling place with a vibe. Most definitely a tourist hot spot.

This place is full of life... The sellers are charming and the exchanges are fruitful. You can take photos and videos, and they always offer you a reduction and a gift if you buy at least two items. I met two Congolese ladies like me, who sell there😍 I didn't even see the table of the second one in fact 😅 The others called her just so she could see the other "Kinoise", lol

Loads of options for African handicrafts big and small to take home as souvenirs. The options on fridge magnets was great there were no handcrafted or unique fridge magnet purchase options available as in Lesotho. The fridge magnets were also pricier than say Boulder beach SAN park gift shop. The vendors are pleasant and easy to talk to, and they don't hassle you into buying stuff. I mainly went to purchase a handcrafted ostrich egg, which was cheaper than the ones I saw in other gift shops.

A good place to pick up souvenirs at cheap prices. There is security hovering around and we didn't feel unsafe, even though it was very quiet. The stall owners don't hassle you so much
