On the Grid : GreenStar Market

"GreenStar feels like one of those uniquely Ithaca places. Equal parts local co-op grocer and community organization, GreenStar’s 45 years in Ithaca has provided our community with healthy fare and a growing roster of local initiatives. In 2015 alone, the cooperative reinvested 4.9 million dollars back into the local economy – 59 cents for every dollar spent. And while GreenStar serves as a guidepost for giving back to community, being a good employer and making organic and local food accessible to everyone in our community regardless of location or income – we must take a minute to simply speak of the food. The glorious food! The co-op is fascinating, but if you're just interested in a well-stocked organic market with lots of ready to eat options at the deli, GreenStar has you covered. From a delicious bakery to a gigantic bulk section – the market has it all. You can join the co-op’s 11,000 strong membership - and get a small discount and voting rights, but anyone is welcome to shop this Ithaca landmark." - St. John Design Group

Google
It's a nice market offering a wide range of organic, locally sourced, and sustainable food products.

Google
Very limited selection of food. Some of the hot bar items were pretty good. There’s also a place to sit down to eat food from the hot bar.

Google
Super convenient to downtown. I really appreciate the option for small, quick grocery runs and access to local produce. Also always a great selection of premade meals and desserts. This is by far my favorite Greenstar location.

Google
It's sad how much GreenStar has changed over the years. It alright, you can find good food if you search hard enough. They still have a few veggie options and lots of organic and diet options. Too bad they are hell bent on supporting animal slaughter houses and they spread it throughout the store. Oh well it's still better then the corner store.

Richard Recchia

Google
Have been going there for years and I have never had a bad experience with them. Their peanut butter cookies are great! For a small store they have a lot. Nice cashiers. The prices are a bit expensive but other than that I have no complaints.

Google
Lively place to pop in for a quick shop or gather you food for the week. The hot bar has great food, though it does need to be better maintained. I love coming it for a quick lunch but I often feel like the bar needs to be refreshed. The new layout is super!

Google
Nice store with a decent selection of grocery food. I am almost always happy with the products I buy there, however, I once had a problem, the manager was very understanding and remedied the situation without any problem. The store is lacking in meat selection. Does have a small but good quality selection of produce, general household items, and basic grocery items.

Google
It's a great place to pick up one or two items without having to take the bus for half an hour. Smaller than the bigger GreenStar, but also more central. They are a little expensive because of all the local products, but I would still go more often if they had a few more meat options. Plenty of healthy, microwaveable foods though, perfect for students!

Yelp
It's a one stop shop. Meat, eggs, veg, dairy, prepared foods, booze, health and beauty, household goods. I'm very impressed with the stock and the prices. It's conveniently located. The staff is terrific.

Yelp
I was in Downtown Ithaca and stopped in here for some fruit. Pretty small store, just down the hill from Cornell University, and really, the only market that I saw in this area. The prices here were a little higher, probably because of that. I didn't stay in here long, but the checkout folks here were so nice that it actually stood out to me!!

Yelp
Wow! I remember the green star co-op from 40 years ago. Was in town to visit friends. Amazing market, but no longer feels like a co-op. I was very disappointed to see that they sell Eden products. Along with Hobby Lobby, Eden was one of the companies that filed lawsuit to protect their right to refuse to include contraception as covered in their employees insurance, because of the owner's religious beliefs. https://www.pbssocal.org/food-discovery/food/the-food-worlds-hobby-lobby-eden-organics

Yelp
Noticing some negative reviews I wanted to contextualize a bit ... This Oasis location has vastly improved relative to the pre-pandemic situation ... Thank god the owners were able to force out Tweedle Dum & Tweedle Dee, who had at that time turned the store into a reign of terror -- to the point that one often felt insulted by rude staff at check-out & worse ... The service in recent years is worlds' apart I'm happy to report ... Dissatisfaction with product variety & reflection of shared values, versus value-for-money, always remains contentious ... Just to reference one of a zillion examples; I couldn't agree more, hypothetically, with the people complaining about GrnStr offering a brand of grapefruit juice which shows a huge picture of the smiling white owners of the orchard, on the carton -- at a time when Florida is refusing to ensure even the most basic protections for the Latino families working in 100+ degrees humidity ... As one person said, "How exactly are we to believe that THEIR happy grins are equally wide?!?" ... BUT ... It's ALSO true that value items are desperately needed in these extremely expensive GreenStar stores -- and that many of us don't wish or aren't able to spend $10-$12 for each bottle of organic juice of the most "PC" brand on the shelf! ... So it's a quandary One last thing I'll mention right now is as to why the produce quality at Oasis is often so markedly lower than at the big store ... Maybe it can't be helped, and is just caused by so many customers handling the much smaller produce displays downtown, with each passed-over tomato or apple getting bruised by each person who comes along and decides not to take that one because it's already been a bit bruised ... But oftentimes the fruit & veg at the Oasis branch seems almost "cruddy" -- so maybe those inventories do in any event need to be switched out more frequently if need be ...

Yelp
If you have food sensitivities of any kind, don't go here. I ordered a custom wheat free cake with their order form, which consists of drop-down menus being explicit that there is wheat free vanilla cake. I spent the rest of that day in the hospital. Turns out they didn't have wheat free vanilla as an option, so they just used wheat-containing cake mix instead and didn't notify anyone about it. I only found out because we called the store. This is dangerous. The lack of follow-up, especially since we ordered on a Sunday and couldn't get any response from anyone who knew what was going on until today, was insane. If I had eaten any more of that cake, I would have been in a lot more trouble than I already am. GreenStar may say it's allergen friendly, but it's not. Please be careful.

Yelp
Is there honestly ANYTHING better than green star? Low income peihram, member discount, highest quality items, friendliest staff, just a great place that makes you proud to be in ithaca.

Yelp
This is a great shop located centrally in downtown Ithaca (unlike the larger co-op which is a bit of a hike from downtown). Aside from stocking every vegan staple you could ever want, they also have a variety of vegan baked goods, and made-to-order vegan sandwiches. For people on-the-go they have vegan breakfast burritos and stuff of that kind rotating under heat lamps, ready to take to class. I got a small chocolate-orange cake ($3.25) which was really good: moist, richly chocolate-y and subdued hints of orange. Come here to stock up on groceries or get a quick meal. They have seating for about 10-15 people as well.

Yelp
Very cool market! I was very impressed with the selection of pre-made foods along with the salad and hot taco bar. We also found a flash sale on raspberries here! 4 containers for $5! We couldn't believe it! The assortment of food is amazing along with their displays of books and lunch goods. Great market!

Yelp
Most Whole Foods/organic-focused places are insanely expensive. Not this place! While the store selections are nice, the real winners here are the service and the salads/meat cold deli section. I strongly recommend the Pad Thai and spicy yams.

Yelp
LOVE LOVE LOVE this market. It really is a gem ! Everything is mostly organic and good for you which makes shopping 100 times easier. Everyone is very nice and helpful.. I sign up to be a member. They have great deals and discount for members also they have a little food bar which you can pick from already made food to eat or to go .. Really great place !!!

Yelp
Update: Don't go to Greenstar Oasis in the morning if you're in a hurry. When certain cashiers see that you're impatient with the languorous conversation at the checkout counter in front of you, they will glance at you and deliberately prolong their conversation and even make little comments about how annoyed you are, and being impatient is not cool in there. I wouldn't mention it except that this is happened to me twice, different people. (Conversation at check-out is utterly charming on a Saturday morning when most people don't need to be anywhere. I'm not a monster, folks! and I lived in the South!) While I'm at it I will mention that, generally speaking, staff at this particular location are really into each other more than the customers, whom they kind of tolerate. The vibe can be insular and unwelcoming. And I say this as a regular, who's a quiet unassuming customer-type, I love the main location, though!

Carmel R.

Yelp
I went in here to buy a soda and I asked the young woman at the counter if I could have the key to use the restroom (a multi-stall bathroom shared with other businesses in the building that is kept locked), and she rudely informed me that "we don't allow access to our restroom on festival days." This was at 9AM. The town festival she was referring to did not even begin until 10AM, so this made no sense. It is rather humiliating to request access to a restroom and be denied for no reason. I'm shocked they would treat paying customers this way. If you want terrible customer service and overpriced products, by all means shop at this snotty establishment. I will never set foot there again.

Yelp
I feel very lucky to have this place within walking distance. Sure you'll pay a markup on some items, but many "staple" food items like onions, black beans, etc. are at very competitive prices. Lots of local food and beverages which are great for gifts. Great for primary shopping on some weeks or secondary if you need to round off your dinner supplies.

Yelp
Green Star has organic and non GMO products, carrying very natural foods, ingredients and beauty products as well. They also have a play section for kids, and when I was a child I would always play there, waiting for my family to be done shopping. Green Star carries many juices, beans and nuts, and has a section dedicated to their sandwiches if you want to grab a quick breakfast or lunch. This place brings back some gold memories.

Yelp
A convenience store version of the larger Greenstar Co-op, Oasis carries grocery basics including fresh organic produce and bulk items. This is my go-to place to grab a quick healthy meal! Includes indoor and outdoor seating options.

Yelp
Calling yourself a coop does not automatically confer that distinction. We have belonged to several coops in NY and NJ, and Greenstar definitely is not a coop: it is a health food store, charging hundreds of per cent over cost for its products. Regarding profits as your first priority is most emphatically NOT what defines a coop.

Yelp
This is downtown Ithaca's only "supermarket," and thus the only option for groceries beyond convenience stores for those who live downtown and don't have a car or want to take tedious bus rides with grocery bags in tow to visit Wegmans or the larger GreenStar. For its size, it's got quite a bit going on - a ready-to-eat hot prepared foods buffet, a deli counter that makes sandwiches, spaces in which to eat inside and out. Unfortuntely, that seems to crowd out much of the space for the regular food stocks, and there's a very limited selection in the rest of the store. And unless you're a member of the co-op (and maybe even if you are; I'm not sure) the prices here can be outrageously expensive. That may reflect the quality of their products, but it's unfortunate there's not some other option for downtown Ithacans who want to balance that tradeoff a little more in the direction of greater savings (we'll have to cross our fingers for the Trader Joe's many have sought to bring to the Commons, I guess).

Yelp
A really great extension of the main Cooperative market 3/4 mile (1.2Km) away. When I had requested a better bicycle rack a while ago there was some hesitation, but once they put in the more secure racks, it seemed like the bike riders just suddenly appeared! The management is pretty responsive to product suggestions, but if people want a product, they have to actually come back and BUY it regularly (obvious? yes, practiced? not so much). Five stars for Oasis if they get their pricing act together--often end caps and products by the door are put up without any price attached to it. If you don't have a price sign/shelf sticker printed DON'T PUT UP A DISPLAY--it's a hassle for the customers. I shop here a lot, and would love a place in Collegetown!

Yelp
For people who live near the Commons in Ithaca but who don't have a car to conveniently whisk them to a large grocery store, the Greenstar Oasis is a godsend. It's the only grocery spot that's easily accessible by foot near the Commons, and although it is tiny, it packs a lot into its small space. I especially appreciate that I can pick up natural foods items like agave nectar, coconut milk, or fish sauce -- things you can't find at a corner convenience store. Greenstar Oasis also has a small section of prepared foods, a seating area, and a natural body care section.

Yelp
This place is convenient since it's the only supermarket that's walking distance from the Commons. Some items they stock are pretty good, particularly the prepared foods (love the spicy peanut lime noodles!) and dairy. However, the selection overall just isn't that great due to the store's size, and often the produce is not very fresh (probably also due to low customer volume). If you live by the Commons, it's good for grabbing a few items in a pinch, but you definitely want to go to Wegman's for your main grocery shopping.

Lili R.

Yelp
I stopped here on my way back from campus today, as I often do, and I don't know why but today I was just struck by how great this place is. It's centrally located so you can pick up a few things on the way to and from work or school (it even had beer!) but unlike a convenience store, it has high quality food (and non-food) products. I am also always impressed by the fact that their happy chicken eggs are way less expensive than Wegmans basically half the price. Also, they have really good prepared food and sandwiches for when I really don't want to cook and just grab something. The employees are friendly and helpful, they always say hi and apologize if something creates even a small delay.

Ebtisam M.

Yelp
As a student on a tight budget, I can only go there twice a month, which is fine with me. I understand good quality can only come at a high price. My issue with the store is the flimsy brown paper bags they give you. I buy a few heavy stuff, they give me one bag, I ask if the bag can handle it, the cashier assures me it will, i walk out the store, ten minutes in and my stuff is all over Ithaca. This is the second time I break the excessively expensive organic eggs. Why are the employees so cheap with giving you a second bag?!!

Chelsea H.

Yelp
Everything is extremely expensive. This would be acceptable if the food was actually good. And if the customer service was up to par. The parking also sucks and they have a bunch of slreserved spots for electric cars except there are rarely any electric cars parked thete. This type of store is great in theory...

Mary B.

Yelp
Make sure you have your drivers license and are willing to give it to a staff person in order to use the bathroom facilities.
