On the Grid : GreenStar Market

"GreenStar feels like one of those uniquely Ithaca places. Equal parts local co-op grocer and community organization, GreenStar’s 45 years in Ithaca has provided our community with healthy fare and a growing roster of local initiatives. In 2015 alone, the cooperative reinvested 4.9 million dollars back into the local economy – 59 cents for every dollar spent. And while GreenStar serves as a guidepost for giving back to community, being a good employer and making organic and local food accessible to everyone in our community regardless of location or income – we must take a minute to simply speak of the food. The glorious food! The co-op is fascinating, but if you're just interested in a well-stocked organic market with lots of ready to eat options at the deli, GreenStar has you covered. From a delicious bakery to a gigantic bulk section – the market has it all. You can join the co-op’s 11,000 strong membership - and get a small discount and voting rights, but anyone is welcome to shop this Ithaca landmark." - St. John Design Group

Other than the parking lot, we had a great visit from Rochester. This is a very clean, well organized store with a bunch of lunch options. We will definitely be back to try more things!

I enjoyed Green Star for a few reasons: Great selection of health food items, regular groceries, and a big selection of supplements. I liked how they are culturally competent and had more obscure food items that you wouldn't find in a normal chain.

I am a Greenstar member, but I’ve been very dissatisfied with the shrinking portions and rising costs of the prepared foods. I often grab something for my lunch at least four times a week, in addition to my regular shopping. Personal favorites are the country fried tofu sandwich, the vegan ban mi and the vegan club wrap. It’s mostly bread for the sandwiches and greens with two meager pieces of tofu. I write this review because I’ve experienced 1/2 to 1/3 size shrinkage in the fillings, AND an increase in price beyond that. I understand having to raise prices, but it’s an insult to customers to put the least amount of protein in a sandwich or wrap possible and expect them to not notice. It’s my own fault for continuing to buy these items, but vegan options are few and far between as far as a quick meal goes. I miss being happy with the prepared food at Greenstar.

I appreciate that there are many vegan foods. However, I will not buy brewed coffee here because the store charges $1 more for plant milks.

This sandwich is a joke. I paid $8 for this.

I have to say the lasagna from the hot bar was amazing. Superb job making a simple dish explode with flavor, and perfectly cooked noodles. Definitely the perfect amount of crispy cheese bits. Thanks for making today's lunch special.

Starting with the meat section, there’s basically nothing available anymore. This started a few months ago when it seemed like nobody was working the deli counter. The prepackaged items across the store are ridiculously overpriced, but I still came for the good value in the bulk section. Recently, that’s been decimated too. What used to be the only reason I shopped here has turned into just another area of price gouging. Bulk items are now marked up beyond reason. I understand that tariffs and other factors have driven up food prices, but increasing the cost of things like chocolate chips and olive oil by 200 percent makes no sense. At the very least, I’d like to see more transparency around pricing so customers can understand where these increases are coming from.
