What's an American supposed to do on a Saturday night here in Vienna?
Go out and party of course, what other answer is there to that question? Grelle Forelle was not on my hitlist when I was making my decision on where to go for the night but I'm glad I was recommended this place by a friend.
The location is adjacent to the Danube River and to come out of the club at 5:30 in the morning and see the sunlight glistening along the water is an experience like no other. The surrounding area of the club was quite clean, at least cleaner than what I'm used to in LA in terms of pollution.
When comparing the lighting and production of this venue to the larger clubs like Academy or Exchange in LA, it's quite lackluster. But Grelle Forelle is not a large club like the aforementioned, no, Grelle Forelle is the underground-style techno European club you've been hearing about all over social media. The light structures on the ceiling add an intricate geometric design that is noticeable yet minimalistic. The addition of smoke machines also adds to the industrial ambiance of an underground club.
Admission was around 15 Euro which is cheaper than warehouse raves I've been to in the US but those warehouse raves had multiple household names.
My biggest complaints: the heat, it gets INSANELY hot inside so bring a hand fan; the service at the bars, later on in the night service started to get a lot slower, it took 3-4 minutes to get a single bottle of water; the smell of cigarettes, it began to get extremely nauseating (though this is Europe, so I should have expected as much).
Overall, Grelle Forelle was extremely fun and I believe I'll have to visit again before I leave.
