How to Get Around Australia on the Cheap (Updated 2025)

"I consider Greyhound Australia the biggest coach company on the east coast and one of the cheapest ways to travel, with low single-ticket fares (e.g., Brisbane–Byron A$31, Sydney–Melbourne A$120) and flexible Whimit passes (15–365 days) priced A$399–849 that cover 180+ stops for unlimited travel." - Matthew Kepnes

I wouldn't even give them one star; actually, I'd give them zero. It all started with the storm on Tuesday night as we boarded the bus; most of the seats were wet and had been leaking. Boarded at 5:30, left and headed to the airport to pick up a few more passengers, and the wipers broke down. So we waited for five hours for a mechanic only to be told we weren't going anywhere. So then waited for the replacement bus which took until three o'clock this started at around 7 o'clock mechanic got there before midnight. The replacement coach comes at 3am drives us to Canberra then tells us that we aren't her problem and to ring the customer service centre at 5:45 in the morning I'm autistic and had a massive meltdown over this over 24 hours of travelling for a 12-hour trip greyhound didn't help us out at all with no connecting buses and no way of getting anywhere until 4:30 that evening 😢 Luckily V/line stepped up great service that was Apparently we are meant to be getting a full refund so we should my luggage was broken as well but oh well

Never ever take a Greyhound. Go downstairs to Murrays instead. They have an office with seats, real humans and frequent services. Avoid Greyhound at all cost! It's 5:25 and the 5:30 bus isn't here, no staff, no one answering phones.

Great customer service, even when I rang & needed to change my seats, Excellent service by the two bus drivers, from Gold Coast to Sydney- even when we got in around one hour earlier in a different area due to roadworks, had a cab booked as couldn’t carry my luggage to hotel Driver waited till the cab came & helped me get into the cab safe & sound Can’t fault them, except less one star due to the seats are a bit uncomfortable, should have a leg rest & maybe they could play a family friendly movie to pass the time away. Going to take a one night break then continue Sydney to Melbourne, Fear of flying - so bus is a good alternative. Thanks - will definitely travel again Nita

...if I could give 0 stars I would. There are no signs, no plans, no bus numbers... NOTHING! Just search the internet and hope that the info "bus bay 6" is still correct. If not for the friendly gentleman in the lost and found from Transport-NSW, we would not have known that we're in the right place. It's dirty, windy, no seats or anything you can sit or at least put your bags on... just put in in the dirt or the puddles on the ground.

WORST EXPERIENCE IN MY LIFE, WORST COMPANY EVER. I booked in advance my ticket and the day of travelling they didn’t allow me to get into the bus, because someone decided to open my ticket after just a consultation of refound. I lost a flight, i lost my bookings, and the worst part, I received the worst treatment ever. The solution was to give me a ticket for the next day in which they changed seats for the entire trip. I need someone to be responsible for all the time and books that I lost

I had a great return trip from Sydney Central to Bullocks Flat last week. It was so much better than driving. The seats were comfortable, there was WiFi, charging ports, plenty of legroom, an onboard toilet, clear communication from the drivers along with some interesting commentary which meant I have learnt things about places I have driven past dozens of times. I couldn’t be happier and will definitely use Greyhound if I go to the snow by myself again, and maybe even if I am going with others. The timing of the return trip (being picked up around 3pm) is great, and so much better than driving home tired and in the dark.

Great comfortable experience using the greyhound. Very punctual, always departed and arrived according to schedule. Friendly driver who drove safely. The 2 meal breaks on my 11 hr journey to Byron Bay were appreciated. USB chargers available, and wifi available for most of the trip. Would recommend! Also a much more sustainable alternative to flights.

Please DO NOT travel with this company, specially if you are picking up the bus in Sydney Airport. ITS IMPOSSIBLE to find the spot to pick up the bus, no signage at all and no one from the airport staff know ANYTHING about it. Also, when you call customer service for a formal complaint, They hang up on you and tell you that there is no refund because the bus does “pass by the stop” Btw the customer service agent was somebody called Olivia.
