The Ultimate List of Wonderfully Specific Museums

"The welcoming committee at the Greyhound Hall of Fame includes not only the perky greyhound statue out front, but two very real greyhounds named Gary and Jade who hang out just inside the doorway and love company. The friendly doggies are retired racers, living life at a slightly slower speed these days. With their light but muscular builds, big hearts, and crazy flexible spines, greyhounds can run at up to 45 miles per hour. There are very few mammals capable of quicker acceleration over short distance. Although the breed was principally used for hunting for much of its history, greyhound racing took off in the 1920s, taking strong root in the United States. The Greyhound Hall of Fame is devoted to celebrating the champions of the racing world - dog and human alike. The building opened in 1973 and has attracted both casual travellers and greyhound fanatics over its many years of operation. Although the exhibits cover the history of the sport and the intricacies of breeding, a large portion of the museum is devoted to displays featuring each of the inductees. One of the most notable honorees is Molotov, a handsome and (literally) dashing dog, who became one of the most sought after sires in America. By the time of his death in 2006, he had fathered a staggering 7,600 puppies. Tales like that one are a good example of how a niche museum isn’t just for die-hards - all the good stuff is in the details." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

This museum is clearly the work of people who genuinely love the sport of greyhound racing. There was a lot of really interesting information and displays with, of course, the dogs inducted, but also how the races are set up and history of the breed. It's impressive how many thing there are here, especially for a free museum. Of course there is the controversy associated with these types of animal activities and the video and the display about how the dogs are bred and housed on a sort of mass scale by dog standards (the video even saying they prefer to be in the kennels all day) didn't exactly give me the warm and fuzzies, but there is also a lot of mention about adopting these dogs, so I think those involved with the museum don't have a callous attitude toward the animals. When I walked in I was greeted by Max and Koko, which made the visit extra pleasant by getting to meet two sweet retired greyhounds.

Google
Great information on the history of Greyhound Racing Industry. Max and CoCo are the official greyhound greeters. Please stop in and learn more about this fabulous dog as you might want to explore one as a pet for your family!

The Greyhound Hall of Fame is an absolute gem for anyone passing through the area. The museum is packed with interesting history about greyhounds and their role in racing and culture. The exhibits are informative and well organized, but the real highlight for me was meeting and petting two sweet greyhounds right there at the museum! The staff is incredibly friendly and clearly passionate about these amazing dogs. Getting up close to the greyhounds made the visit truly unforgettable they’re calm, gentle, and so lovable. If you’re a dog lover or just looking for something unique to do, I highly recommend stopping by. It’s a small museum with a big heart!

We have the worst luck when traveling it seems. No matter what day it is the things we notice and want to see are closed. The Greyhound Hall of Fame looked like an interesting place but it was closed this Monday, May 5th. We did get a quick photo of the greyhound sculpture outside. Maybe if we can return to Abilene we can see it then.

We enjoyed our visit. It's a nice homage to greyhounds and the history of racing in the US. An added bonus was meeting the two beautiful Grey's they have on site. Well worth the visit.

This place is a fun little stop to check out or take your kids, too! They don't charge admission, so it's donation only. Staff is always friendly and knowledgeable! You can learn a lot about greyhound racing. However, the best part is always the in-house greyhounds you get to pet!

My brother and I visited the Greyhound Hall of Fame on November 11th, 2023. We found out about this museum entirely due to chance - as we were going to visit the Eisenhower Museum right across the street, I was reading about Abilene on Wikipedia, and saw that this much smaller museum is located in the town. As dog owners, we had to make time to see the place. The museum is quaint and rather cute, but also informative and serious as needed. Upon entering, we were greeted by the museum curator and two very lovely retired greyhounds, Max and Ginger. We then took our time to see the exhibits itself, including a preserved greyhound skeleton, awards through the years, and information on the history of greyhound racing. There is a tiny gift shop that includes memorabilia such as postcards and plush greyhounds. Admission to this museum is free. We spent a little over a half hour there, which was sufficient (given our tight schedule) - if you have the time (especially, I imagine, if you have or have had a greyhound) I would recommend closer to one hour. Of course, take your time to pet the greyhounds. In my view, that was the best part. The curator was very polite and answered all of our questions. If you are a dog lover or just an animal lover, you can't skip out on this museum. Parking is easy enough; we parked at the Eisenhower Museum and just crossed the road to see this one.

Google
Great free stop if you got an hour to kill! The videos used are pretty dated but interesting and informative. My favorite section is the history of greyhound racing/domestication. Say hi to Ginger! She's a sweet greyhound that'll greet you at the door and couldn't be softer (she does she'd a bit though so watch your clothes!)

Yelp
One of a kind! Two beautiful greyhounds greeted us as we walked into the door. Everything and anything you want to learn about greyhounds.

Yelp
I have really mixed feelings about this place. It is a small museum with some interesting displays. The highlights are the historical artifacts and art pieces that document and pay tribute to these beautiful creatures. The small scale replica of a racing track and grandstand is also pretty cool. Of course the highlight is getting to meet and pet the 2 four legged greeters. What wonderful hosts and gentle and curious animals. Parts of the museum were quite dated or empty. The film seemed to be several decades old and the area that showcase the racetracks could use an update. The part that gives me pause, is the part that is not presented - the breeding for profit and the abuse and neglect of those that are not the fastest runners. I have a co-worker that spends many an hour working to find homes for the unwanted greyhound population and I find it hard that the museum doesn't address this issue. The human host was a pleasant person and probably a volunteer, so I didn't raise the issue. After leaving we decided to highly consider adding a greyhound to the family, so maybe the museum is serving a current purpose for good. Maybe.

Yelp
If greyhounds or dog racing are your thing, this place is for you. Lots of photos, stories and displays documenting dog racing. My favorite part was the two friendly greyhounds that live at the facility.

Yelp
I like museums and Greyhounds, so this is a sure thing. We were driving from Atlanta to Seattle and found that our route came a mere mile from the museum so we stopped in. We arrived at opening which I believe was 10am, and the staff was really friendly and let us bring our dogs in for the tour. It helped that two of them were greyhounds, with the other two a whippet and an IG. If you are driving by, it's a nice stop.

Yelp
Museum is large, well appointed with lots of information presented. You'll be greeted immediately by two retired racers and pleasant staff. There's a small gift shop as well. Number of stars would be higher if I could ethically support the sport of greyhound racing - or if they were brave enough to present the other (dark) side of the sport.

Yelp
Honestly, we were in town to experience the Big Three of tourist destinations. Since nothing else was open on Sunday morning, we opted to check out the Greyhound Hall of Fame. The greeting by 2 retired greyhounds made the stop worth while. What sweeties! Even though the introduction film and display films were a bit dated, we learned a lot about the role Kansans played in the history of the sport. We also enjoyed the art exhibit. We probably spent around 30 minutes total in the building. Friendly people. If you have the time, worth the stop.

Yelp
Stopped here yesterday with my Mom and sister and her two kids. Got to see the two beautiful greyhounds that live there. Such sweeties! The lady running the place was really pleasant. I'm not that into greyhound racing, but I love anything to do with dogs so I liked all the dog paintings and statues. All in all it was a really cute, interesting place.

Yelp
We saw the sign for this on the interstate saying we could pet the hounds. We couldn't pass that up! When we pulled in one of the dogs was in the exercise pen out back having a good run. There are two greyhounds who live at the museum and they are very sweet. There's a short movie inside that tells you a bit about the history of greyhound racing.

Yelp
For the past 3 years in June, I have made a trip to the Greyhound Hall of Fame. As a retired greyhound adopter, it was exciting to see the history of the racing and all the interesting displays. #keepthemracing

Yelp
The Greyhound Hall of Fame is really a hidden treasure here in Abilene. My family raises racing greyhounds. They are one of the coolest dogs I have ever been around. They each have their own personalities and when you go to the Greyhound Hall of Fame you will see for yourself as they have retired greyhounds there to great the guests. The rich history is very interesting, the exhibits are very well designed and informative. Family fun learning place to go! Abilene has been called the Greyhound Capital of the US! Hope you stop by and check this place out!!
