I used to work at a pretty amazing gelateria run by a woman who learned how to make gelato in Italy and only used Italian machines and the freshest ingredients, so I have to say I know a thing or two about eating gelato and sneaking sample bites (but not necessarily making it!)Nabbed a small cup of hazelnut and stracciatella because I am a child but I think i am a ~fancii~ adult so I need to consume usual basic flavors like chocolate chip updated with adult names like Stracciatella and Nocciola, and then of course they have to be in Italian because I am in ~Italia~ but of course I had to stop by a chain store for my first gelato experience in ~Italia~! That said, the gelato at Grom was superb and the service was great. I didn't have to pay to sit down with my coppa and have a friendly neighborhood dog with friendly owners try to eat my gelato, and I definitely didn't need the whipped cream on top but it was great. The taste of hazelnut was quite strong and most of all, the gelato wasn't watery. I've been amazed at the quantity of watery decorative gelato I've seen here, and Grom obviously makes an effort to keep its gelato cold (though it is more disappointing to walk into a store and not see the gelato before you eat it). You want a nice thick gelato, even though it's normally served at a warmer temp to ice cream, and the flavors should really come out. The stracciatella was better than at the place I used to work, but it was also much sweeter with larger chocolate chips. I don't mind that.
