The 9 Best Hostels in Iceland (Updated 2025)

"Serving as a base for exploring Snæfellsnes Glacier National Park, the hostel centers on a two-story red reception building with sleeping quarters scattered through the village; dorm bunks are basic but comfy, rooms are clean and spacious, and there’s a kitchen if you want to cook. The décor is a bit dated, but the hostel is comfortable and cozy in a beautiful location with excellent views — you can see Kirkjufell (Church Mountain) from some rooms — making it a good option for couples and families." - Matthew Kepnes

The only drawback is the parking a 2mins walk from the house, rather than just at the house. Everything else is great. I can see the mountain from the front porch. The kitchen is well equipped and good for cooking dinner. Room is bigger than peers. Bathroom is decent, though the shower room is too tiny. Check in time is more lenient than peers (anytime after 3pm). One of the top 3 accommodations on my ring road trip

The hostel has two buildings, the red one which is the main building, and green, and we stayed in a quad-room on the ground floor of the green one. There were two bathrooms on the ground floor, which is good enough and there’s never any need to wait. The cooking area in the kitchen is relatively small, which can allow only one family cooking at a time. The room is relatively small, but has good blinder. As the kitchen is in the middle of the 3 rooms, we can hear the noise from the kitchen early in the morning. The parking is about 100m from the hostel, which is very convenient.

The location and service was great. Very clean rooms. It was nice to have a full kitchen as well as a living room! Keep in mind there are no spices or anything, just dishes and pots, pans, etc. Of course, only problem is roommates. Ours weren't super noisy but you can still hear them if they are moving around while you are trying to sleep. But that's common of hostels.

Really lovely room. Location is perfect, quite close to the obvious main attraction in the town. I wish I had booked my entire stay in the peninsula at this hostel.

We stayed here four nights during a wintery April. The location is great with the local swimming pool just a few steps away, fantastic views of the mountains behind the town and a quick walk to the harbour. Kitchen was perfect for our purposes and we really enjoyed our stay!

+ The place was great! I loved that everything was on the same floor (in our case): room, bathrooms, kitchen. We also had a sink in the room, which was very handy. We received a big family room instead of a double room, and we liked it! Everything was nice, I would totally recommend this place! - Parking is a few hundred meters up the road, which is not a lot, but it was raining like crazy when we arrived, so this was a bit unpleasant.

We booked an ensuite room. While we GPSed to the red building - Grundarfjordur Hostel HI where we checked in, we were given a map that directed us to Solvellir 13, which was a 2 storey building grey and white near the sea. Getting there involves driving through an industrial/warehouse area. ||||The room was simply/sparsely decorated in bright colours.||||Cons: However, what completely grossed me out was the hairs and a pubic hair stuck/intertwined in the wooly bedsheet. I was surprised the person who made the bed did not spot it. And there was no phone to call housekeeping. Fortunately the duvet was large enough to act as both bedsheet & blanket and I was only there for one night. || ||The hostel requires removal of shoes at the entrance – which was fine but someone’s smelly shoes lingered in the foyer/staircase area. There is also cooking smells that stayed in the corridor. The automatic lights in the corridor also did not work perfectly so we were sometimes groping a bit when getting the key into keyhole. ||||Both hand soap and shower soap dispensers were empty. ||||Pros: On the plus side, we got a room with a lovely view of the sea and Kirkjufell and the young lady at the reception was friendly and helpful. ||||And we saw the northern lights that night - which was awesome.

This place was really nice! Our room was nice and roomy for three people. The bunkbeds were comfortable and the room was nice and clean. The bathroom was a shared bathroom with the other rooms, but we never ran into the other guests and there were two toilets, anyways. Check-in was nice and easy and check-out was just as easy.
