"Constructed from some six million biscuit-coloured bricks, this monolithic church towers like a rocket ship over the quiet residential streets that surround it. Designed by Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint in 1913 (although not finished until after his death in 1940) this rare example of religious expressionist architecture is a pilgrimage for design enthusiasts."

Grundtvig’s Church is absolutely awe-inspiring — a true architectural masterpiece. The moment you step inside, you’re struck by the soaring ceilings, serene atmosphere, and the natural light that floods the vast space. It’s a perfect blend of simplicity and grandeur, with its unique expressionist Gothic design unlike anything else in the city. The symmetry, silence, and scale make it a deeply moving experience, even if you’re not religious. If you’re visiting Copenhagen, this is a must-see — peaceful, majestic, and unforgettable.

This church boasts an impressive design. Its understated architecture and striking façade make it well worth a visit, even though it’s a bit outside the city centre. Inside, the serene, light-filled space creates a unique and contemplative atmosphere. And if you’re lucky, you might even catch the majestic sound of its gigantic organ in action.

A stunning piece of architecture and its beauty is profound. A very busy church when I visited, it only opens for certain periods so be sure to check opening times and days before you leave. It’s completely worth a visit if you are willing to negotiate around the many tourists all vying for the perfect position which is completely understandable as it has to be seen to be believed.

We cycled here from our hotel. It took about 30 minutes on an electric Lime bike. It was worth the effort. When you arrive, you feel like you’re in the wrong area and then you turn a corner and see it! Wonderful atmosphere and architecture!

Only saw from the outside, but worth the visit! Gorgeous architecture and an awesome scale that pictures can't do justice. We came when sun was setting which provided beautiful lighting! Also got to hear the bells going. Would recommend visiting around this time (5ish).

Awesome building and construction. Like a breath of fresh air compared to other over the top churches in other places. Worth the detour as this is not in the center of the city, but easy enough to get around in Copenhagen, so no big deal.

Beautiful church out of the city centre. My friend and I walked here as we'd heard about it being the basis of the church from Shrek. Lovely walk through various parks, it took about an hour from the centre and we took the metro back into town. The architecture of the church itself was fenomenal both inside and out.

Grundtvig's Church in Copenhagen is a place where light, silence, and the purity of space create a unique sense of tranquility. Built between the 1920s and 1940s by Peder Klint and completed by his son, Koro, it stands as a rare example of expressionism in sacred architecture.

Yelp
Very cool experience visiting. Due to being out of the way from the main downtown areas the church was not very crowded. The architecture, exterior and interior were both incredible and plenty of chairs to sit in to take it all in.

Yelp
It's off-the-beaten-path and a trek to get there being so north from central city, but it's worth the investment. Grundtvigs Kirke is one of the only examples of expressionist architecture in churches around the world. From the moment you turn the corner to see the church, it's stunning. It seems other worldly. It's open throughout the year for visitors. When my friend and I went in at 3 p.m. on a Thursday in October 2021, the doors were open and an organist was playing. A few tourists filled the seats snapping photos of the unique design. If you love design and architecture, definitely go here. Admission is free and they sell a few items inside to help fund the church's Christmas charity work.

Yelp
Sunday morning, so of course I went to church and I am glad that I made the journey out to this part of Copenhagen. This church is simply beautiful. A newer style than the older "Gothic" or "Neoclassic" churches, this is what's called "expressionist" architecture. Mostly built between 1921 and 1926, with the interior completed around 1940. There is seating for a congregation of 1440. Lots of curb appeal here. The church just gets better and better as you get closer to it. A massive structure, simply stunning to look at from the outside. And then the inside. Just amazing. Beautifully and minimally decorated but stunning. There are some postcards near the lobby that are for sale on an honor/donation system. I am so glad that I made the effort to come out here.

Yelp
This church blows my socks off it is so awesome to look at. I don't subscribe to any religious institution, but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate when something is truly awesome (defined as awe inspiring and not just merely cool). A picture is really worth a thousand words in this case, so I don't really have more to say except to see it in person or, if you can't do that, to see it in pictures. Keep an eye out for the model ship suspended in the back of the church.
