My wife and I stayed at Guest House Douro in October 2025 as the finale to our 10-day Portugal anniversary trip, and we couldn't have chosen a better place. Our stay got off to a memorable start when I arrived completely drenched from a downpour during the short walk from our Uber. Luis, the delightful young desk clerk, immediately took my soaked coat to dry it and generously lent me his own raincoat to use for the next two days. That moment of genuine hospitality set the tone for our stay. While the rooms are cozy and on the smaller side, what they lack in size is more than compensated for by the enormous hearts of the staff. Luis, Addy, and Luisa were all wonderful—constantly smiling, offering help, and making us feel like cherished guests. The intimate breakfast setting was lovely, featuring beautiful fruit displays and excellent coffee. The location right off the Douro River provided us with terrific views and people watching. But what truly made our stay unforgettable was the thoughtful service. When we checked out, Luis handed us a parting anniversary gift—a bottle of Tawny Port—which we enjoyed that evening. It was the perfect ending. Thank you, Luis, Addy, and Luisa for making our anniversary so memorable!

The Douro Guest House was a great place to stay in Porto. It is right on the river so you can’t beat the location. It is very cozy and quiet with just a few rooms. Our room was compact, but very comfortable and the view over the city at night was perfect. The included breakfast was incredible with so many fresh and healthy options, especially the fruit. In addition, the staff was always available and ready to give great advice of what to see and do in the city.

This accommodation was along the riverfront and was a modern update of a historic building. The people there made this a top notch stay - Philip at the front desk was welcoming and helpful in making us feel right at home. Luis was the point person in the daily breakfast area and made us feel like family. The breakfasts were the best ever!|The rooms were clean and as advertised. We will definitely stay here again next time we come to Porto!

This stay was a story of highs and lows. ||Staff: 5 stars. Everyone, to a person, was extremely competent, accommodating and very friendly|Room: 1 star. Maybe it’s just our particular room (102) but it was blisteringly hot and the AC was completely nonexistent. It was 25 degrees outside and must have been at least 35 in our room. Mind you, this was September. You couldn’t pay me money to stay here in the hotter months. Also, the room was teeny tiny…my husband and I were constantly bumping into each other. |Location: 5 stars and also 1 star. It’s right on the river with pretty views and in the middle of a very scene-y part of town. That’s the 5 star part. But because of the AC issue, you have to open the windows which are right above a loud restaurant terrace. The boats start coming in early in the morning and the horns are also super loud. Sleeping was very difficult. |Breakfast: 5 stars. Incredible fresh fruit and fresh pastries. Eggs and cereal also on offer. |WiFi: 1 star. Super glitchy and slow. |Logistics: 1 star. We were only offered one key for two people. You will not get a key to the main door which would be fine if there was staff there 24/7 but on our final night, I arrived home ahead of my husband. I then received a call asking if we were in for the night because the clerk was ready to go home. Kind of a shocker to realize that, had we come in together, the clerk might have assumed we were in for the night. Had we changed our minds and gone out for a nightcap, we might have been locked out. ||In summary, lovely staff, charming location, yummy breakfast but for me, the cons outweigh the pros. We sadly wouldn’t choose this place again.

GREAT LOCATION near the Douro River, shopping, dining and historic sites. We enjoyed great service from the reservations to arrival to departure. Room was tidy, comfortable and had an updated ensuite shower, toilet, sink. We enjoyed our stay and the cozy comfort offered. Would stay here again.

We really enjoyed our stay. It’s a great location and the hotel is a charming place to stay. We had 2 rooms for our stay in Porto including 402 which has a great river view. Lovely breakfast and excellent customer service. Thanks to Philip for his restaurant recommendations and chatting to our son in Spanish.

We had such a lovely 3-night stay. We interacted with 3-4 different hotel staff members prior to and during our visit - all were incredibly kind and very helpful! They respond quickly to email to answer any questions, recommendation, reservation requests and more. Their service is really exceptional and a highlight of this hotel. We were welcomed with water, snacks and a map while they explained the city and directions to orient our visit. They even provided a recommendation for pastel de nata at a placed called Castro - which had the best pastel de nata of our entire Portugal vacation! We stayed in room 401 without a river view, and had a great accommodation with elevator access. Everything super clean each day and the beds are comfy. Even though you are right by the river and it can be loud outside, we didn’t hear a thing inside! We were provided with water bottles upon request as needed each day. The included breakfast was fabulous - all fresh fruit from the Bolhao market with many options from fresh cooked eggs made to order, yogurt/granola bowls, croissants, fresh juice of the day, and more. Know that because this hotel is by the river, it is at the bottom of a steep hill, so for those who like to be by the river, that may not be an issue and would be a good location. For us, all our destinations were at the top of the hill. However, the staff are super helpful in booking a taxi if needed, like we did to get to the train station with our luggage, and the taxi pulled up right outside the hotel. Also note that there is a call button / doorbell to ring when you arrive - they are quick to respond, but it took us a few minutes to see the button and know what to do. 😅

This place is in a perfect location. There are restaurants just steps away. The host was very helpful and nice. The room was small but very cozy. They have a dumb waiter so that you can take your luggage to your floor.

Yelp
We splurged in Porto and stayed in this immaculate boutique hotel. The breakfast of fresh fruit was artfully plated and tasted delicious along with an array of baked goods as well as cheese and ham. The rooms were spotless and the bedding luxurious but what truly sets the Guest House Douro apart is the staff. They are there to ensure you have everything you want or need. Every time you walk in the door they will provide you with a drink of your choice.

Yelp
Hugo and Luisa are magnificent hosts - they work very hard to make your visit comfortable and inviting. The rooms are small, although very carefully appointed. The river view rooms have a wonderful prospect over the Duoro and nightlife on the river bank. Breakfasts are beautiful: gorgeous and delicious fruits; meats & cheeses; and a variety of baked goods. The location is AMAZING - easy walking distance to all the downtown sites. If you are coming in a car, be sure to reach out in advance to understand the parking logistics. There is no automotive access to the guest house, but Hugo and Luisa can make it work for you.

Yelp
A real gem. This is a small place (8 rooms) in a great location along the river. The rooms are small but beautifully appointed with high end modern appointments and spotlessly maintained. The breakfast is quite spectacular in a smallish room on the first floor which requires timed seatings in order to accommodate all the guests. But the true heart of the operation are the gracious, friendly and delightful owners Carmen and Joao. They could not be more helpful, from recommending things to do, places to eat or providing a running commentary on matters Portuguese. It is a guesthouse and not a hotel. Some criticisms on other websites have noted there are rules (such as guests must be in by 1am or risk being out all night) but we found them perfectly reasonable and acceptable. We have travelled all over the world and have rarely had a better lodging experience.

Yelp
Just returned from Portugal. Absolutely loved this well appointed, well located small guest house. It was off season and between COVID variants so for a couple of nights we were the only guests. Rooms are small, but spotless and well thought out. The staff and owners were so at the ready to answer any questions, and attend to our needs. They made suggestions and reservations at nearby excellent small restaurants that we thoroughly enjoyed. As COVID was still a major issue, testing was a bit of a necessary drag. The staff was beyond helpful in guiding us to testing sites as well as helping us upload documents that were necessary to move onto our next destination, Madeira. Breakfast was beautifully presented and plentiful, but it is a continental breakfast. If you are expecting a protein rich experience, this is not it. Very typical of small European inns and guest houses. Nice touch included offering us a glass of wine in the late afternoon or a glass of port after returning from dinner.Lovely people running a charming experience.

Yelp
Can't give enough kudos to Carmen and Joao, the Douro House owners/operators and their wonderful assistant Sonia! If all of our hotel stays were like this B&B travel life would be a dream. Douro House guests are treated more like extended family than mere customers. The rooms, while small by US standards, are very comfortable and extremely clean. Joao's breakfast creations are as much artwork as a great dining experience. I and other guests remarked that it was almost a shame to dive into the fruit dish! But that did not stop us, of course. Yummy! Sonia - a delight and a font of knowledge regarding how to traverse Porto, go shopping, eating out, etc. And the welcoming glasses of fine port wine.... a wonderful way to unwind at day's end! Douro House is where I will recommend all of my friends and family to stay while in Porto.
