20 Best Things to Do in Montreal

"Guidatour's professional guides have earned their excellent reputations, and the company's Old Montréal East and Old Montréal West itineraries both stop off at the must-see Notre-Dame Basilica, including an interior visit at no additional charge. Both tours last 90 minutes, and they're best for those looking for a crash course in the history of Montreal. You'll be amazed at how many hidden treasures you stumble upon in such a short time span. As much of Guidatour’s offerings are held outdoors, scheduled tours are generally on hold for the colder months. If you can brave the cold, however, feel free to reach out directly through their website to inquire about setting up a private tour." - Todd Plummer

"Start us off with an overview. How are the guides, and where will they take us? Guidatour's professional guides have an excellent reputation. The Old Montréal East and Old Montréal West itineraries both stop off at the must-see Notre-Dame Basilica , including an interior visit at no additional charge. (Both tours last 90 minutes.) Our guide was phenomenal… she told us sooo much about Montreal and gave us prime photo opp places. She offered terrific insight on local restaurants and pubs (which were spot on!), answered all our questions and kept a nice pace covering a lot of the old Downtown! Making the reservation was also very easy.

Walking tour of Old Montreal is a must if this is your first time visiting or you’ve been here before. Sarah was an excellent guide - funny and full of interesting details. You can tell she loves this city and she reveals stories of the First Nations, the Europeans and British who put their marks on the city.

I’ll get this out of the way first: we hesitated between taking the French or English version, and took the English one. It was a great choice, because Sebastien was a delight. He is a former teacher, who manages to be fun, educational, and charming at all times. The tour is a very interesting 2-hr walk through gorgeous old Montreal, and the key moments and differences between the British side and the French side are established. If you are wondering, wonder no more. Take the tour, and hopefully get Sebastien!

Our guide Sébastien was amazing, very fun and kind. He guided us to the old Montreal streets while describing the historical facts and places. Highly recomended, specially for those who wants to know the history behind statues and historical buildings.

Pierre was absolutely fantastic! One of the best tours we’ve been on. He was knowledgeable, funny, patient and considerate of everyone in our tour party. He even liked my French accent when I spoke the only French I know…”Je suis fatigue😰🤣!!!!!”

Google
A Great city walk in the old part of Montreal! Pierre was a great guide, told and showed us lots in interesting places and facts about (the history of) Montreal! With a good sense of humor too! So worthy this walk.

We recently had the pleasure of taking a walking tour of Old Town Montreal with Sebastien from Guidatour and we can't recommend him enough! His tour was absolutely fantastic. Sebastien's ability to guide us through the city was truly amazing. He wove a wonderful narrative about Old Town, connecting the buildings, people, and culture of the past to the present day in a way that made history feel incredibly alive and easy to understand. It was so much more than just a tour; it was a captivating story that helped us see how Montreal's rich history has shaped the vibrant city it is today. If you're looking for a knowledgeable and engaging guide, Sebastien is your guy. We would definitely recommend him to anyone wanting to discover the magic of Old Town Montreal!

Yelp
We thoroughly enjoyed Sarah's English tour of old Town Montreal. She was extremely well informed, kept people engaged throughout both the morning and afternoon tours. She was an excellent tour guide and I would highly recommend her tour!

Yelp
Our family group of three did a private walking tour of Old Montreal with Pierre and it was a highlight of our Canada trip. Montreal is a beautiful city and o Pierre is the perfect ambassador for a place he clearly loves. Pierre gave us a fabulous tour of the Basilica, the underground city, the banking center and the charming streets and sights of Old Montreal. He showed us places, stores and restaurants that we would never have found on our own. We highly recommend Guidatour and the charming Pierre.

Yelp
Very pleased with the selection we made at the last minute. We quickly realized that we were going to get very little just walking around the city on our own and decided to buy the tickets outside the Notre Dame Basilica. We opted for the tour on the west side of the historic district- there is a seperate tour for the east side. The guide provided a tour in English- French is also available. The group was about 15 people- not too big but a challenge at times. A short time in the Basilica just to show it to us- then off to walk the old part of the city. The guide did a good job of keeping the tour interesting and humorous. He threw in occasional humor and kept the facts flowing without coloring it too much with his personal opinions. Good tour, very convenient and the price was right.

Yelp
Good! Walking tours daily in English at 11am and 1:30pm (or French at 11am) for $20 or so per person. Includes admission to the Notre Dame Basilica, some noteworthy historical and architectural landmarks, reasonably interesting factoids about Montreal, and of course a reasonably French Canadian nationalist narrative to go along with it. Enjoy, and try not to ask too many Anglocentric questions. :) Tour tickets can be purchased on the spot at the meeting point, which was right at the main entrance to the basilica.

Yelp
Good walking tours. We took the East (11am) and West (1:30pm) tours with an English speaker guide. The East tour includes entry to the Basilica. The tours (one and a half hour each) were okay and interesting in most parts but they weren't amazing as tours we had in the past in other places (and not because of the location). Nice way to know the old city.

Yelp
Bravo. Nice job. The three of us took the 1.5 hour English tour with Elise through old Montreal and were not disappointed. She can be funny, interesting and knows enough background to make it worth the price. She also had suggestions for side trips. eateries and other points of interest. We chose 1.5 hours, figuring two hours would be way too long. Merci.

Yelp
My twelve year old daughter and I went on the Old city ghost tour in early September. She hated it, I loved it. Our guide was Franklin, I can call him Frank now cuz we're friends. He was great. I would have loved to chat with him but my daughter had to fly stuff on YouTube ya know. Anyway he was funny , a little creepy and all that stuff. The daughter's big objection was not enough ghosts which I agree with especially since the big story took place miles away from the old city. But the sense of history.was there and I loved it. I really got feel of how Montreal evolved. Also have to compliment Frank on handling the nasty frat boys. Recommend 100 percent

Yelp
I was hard pressed to find a general English-speaking walking tour on a recent visit to Montreal. This was the only one I found and we weren't disappointed. The $19.50 tour price included a trip into the Notre Dame basilica, which was breathtaking. Then we wandered around Old Montreal. My only complaint was the other members of the group which we were often left waiting for. We had 15 people in our group, and I think it would have been best limited to 10. but I guess you get what you pay for with guided group walking tours! Overall it was a great way to acclimate to the city.
